The performance of photo-sequencing batch reactor (PSBR) in removing multiple antibiotics and nutrients from aquaculture wastewater as well as the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) proliferation were firstly investigated during the long-term experiments. The operational conditions (i.e. light intensity, light time, aeration and solid retention time) were optimised to realise the simultaneous removal of antibiotics and nutrients. It was found that, compared with traditional SBR, PSBR has similar nutrient removal rate and a 30% higher antibiotics removal rate due to the corporation of microalgae (Chlorella) and bacteria, and the absolute abundance of ARGs decreased by 78% in PSBR. Further investigation showed that PSBR had certain advantages in removing quinolones and the corresponding removal rate could reach up to 90%. In terms of the mechanisms, the possible metabolic pathway of antibiotic was analysed and the intermediate metabolites were different from that of the reported studies. The microbial communities were also affected by microalgae and the relative abundance of certain bacteria (such as members of the families Rhodocyclaceae and Burkholderiaceae), which were positively correlated with some ARGs, decreased in PSBR. This study provides an alternative and effective method to aquaculture wastewater treatment, which present high nutrients and antibiotics removal efficiencies and low ARGs transmission. Swine wastewater (SW) poses a great threat to the environment due to its high-nutrient profiles if not properly managed. Advanced biological treatment method is an efficient method to treat SW by screening potent microalgae or bacterial strains. In this study, activated sludge, three locally isolated heterotrophic nitrification bacteria and one microalgal strain (Chlorella) were used as inoculums in treating a local SW. Their treatment efficiencies were compared, while the nitrogen removal mechanisms and microbiome profile were explored in detail. It was found that certain heterotrophic nitrification strains had a slight advantage in removing chemical oxygen demand and phosphorus from SW, with the highest removal efficiencies of 83.9% and 76.2%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen in wastewater by microalgae reached 80.9% and 66.0% respectively, which were far higher than all the heterotrophic nitrification strains. Biological assimilation was the main pathway of nitrogen conversion by microalgae and heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria; especially microalgae showed excellent biological assimilation performance. Correlation analysis showed that Comamonas was highly positively correlated with nitrogen assimilation, while Acidovorax was closely correlated with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. To understand the mechanism of enhanced nitrogen removal by photo-sequencing batch reactors (photo-SBRs), which incorporated microalgal photosynthetic oxygenation into the aerobic phases of a conventional cycle, this study performed comprehensive analysis of one-cycle dynamics. Under a low aeration intensity (about 0.02 vvm), a photo-SBR, illuminated with light at 92.27 μ·mol·m −2 ·s −1 , could remove 99.45% COD, 99.93% NH 4 + -N, 90.39% TN, and 95.17% TP, while the control SBR could only remove 98.36% COD, 83.51% NH 4 + -N, 78.96% TN, and 97.75% TP, for a synthetic domestic sewage. The specific oxygen production rate (SOPR) of microalgae in the photo-SBR could reach 6.63 fmol O 2 ·cell −1 ·h −1 . One-cycle dynamics shows that the enhanced nitrogen removal by photo-SBRs is related to photosynthetic oxygenation, resulting in strengthened nitrification, instead of direct nutrient uptake by microalgae. Wastewater treatment technology with better energy efficiency and recyclability is in urgent demand. Photo-Sequencing batch reactor (SBR), which introduces microalgae into conventional SBR, is considered to have more potential for resource recycling. In this study, a photo-SBR was evaluated through the manipulation of several key operational parameters, i.e., aeration strength, light supply intensity and time per cycle, and solid retention time (SRT). The algal-bacterial symbiotic system had the potential of removing COD, NH 4 + -N and TN with limited aeration, representing the advantage of energy-saving by low aeration requirement. Maintaining appropriate proportion of microalgae in the symbiotic system is critical for good system performance. Introducing microalgae into conventional SBR has obvious impact on the original microbial ecology. When the concentration of microalgae is too high (>4.60 mg Chl/L), the inhibition on certain phyla of bacteria, e.g., Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria , would become prominent and not conducive to the stable operation. This paper presents a simple method for the restoration of clogged vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland by earthworm. Since clogging always takes place at the top layer, epigeic earthworm is suitable for restoration of the clogged wetland. Earthworm can not only loosen the substrate, but also transform 80∼90% of undissolved organic particles into dissolved matters. Accordingly, the accumulated solids in substrate with earthworm are 50% less than the one without earthworm. The wetland with earthworm removed 2∼5 percentage points more nitrogen and 12 percentage points more phosphorous for its better ventilation conditions, while 2 percentage points less COD because the generation of dissolved organic matter from undissolved organic particles by earthworm. In general, the influence of earthworm on the effluent quality of the wetland could be ignored. Hydrology of six full-scale clogged wetlands was restored by Eisenia foetida. The optimal strength of earthworm addition is 0.5 kg/m², which spend RMB six yuan/m², less than 0.75/m². • A sustainable strategy by moving nitrogen from mainstream to side stream was studied. • A cycle of ammonium exchange, regeneration, and nitrogen removal (AERN) was designed. • AERN cycle rapidly separates NH 4 + from wastewater for further removal or recycle. • Two AERN-based systems removed 86.8% and 93.7% nitrogen at HRT of 8.9 and 3.5 h. • AERN-based processes reduced 59.9–71.7% land occupancy and 2.3–31.0% treatment cost. The activated sludge process is efficient for pollutant removal, but was criticized for its large upfront investment and land area requirements. Improving nitrogen removal to levels sufficient to reduce eutrophication is a challenge to conventional nitrification and denitrification, which is limited by process configuration (with nitrate recirculation) and environmental inhibition. To satisfy stringent discharge standards within a compact plant footprint, a sustainable strategy by moving nitrogen removal from mainstream to side-stream is designed by a cycle of ammonium exchange, regeneration and nitrogen removal (AERN), combined with biological and physiochemical technologies. Ammonium was rapidly captured by ion exchangers, then exchanged into regenerant, and converted to N 2 by chlorination or Sharon-anaerobic ammonia oxidation in the side-stream. The AERN cycle can be combined with a high-rate anaerobic/aerobic process and chemical phosphorus removal to construct a HAERN process, or inserted between a coagulation-sedimentation tank and a membrane bioreactor to construct a CAERNM process. Two AERN-based systems both achieved efficient pollutants removal (especially for nitrogen removal of 86.8–93.7%) in long-term running, and didn't impair exchange capacity and properties of ion exchangers. Compared with the conventional anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic process, AERN-based processes reduce land occupancy, upfront investments, and treatment costs by 59.9–71.1%, 25.5–38.0% and 2.3–31.0%, respectively.
