Plastic waste and its fragments (microplastics; <5 mm) have been observed in almost all types of environments. However, the mechanisms underlying the flow and transport processes of plastics are unknown. This is particularly valid for river sediments, where complex interactions occur between particles and influence their vertical and horizontal distribution patterns. In this study, we investigated the vertical redistribution of 14 pristine microplastics (MPs) with different densities, sizes, and shapes within disturbed sediment without lateral transport (i.e., low-velocity flow). MPs were spiked into sediments (height: 8 cm) in a column with a height of 1 m (diameter: 6 cm) filled to the top with water. The sediment was perturbed by turning the column upside-down to simulate remobilization and the subsequent deposition of sediment. After the complete sedimentation of the particles, the water column was filtered and the sediment was cut into vertical sections. MPs were then extracted from the sediment using sieves and a density separation method, and were counted under a stereomicroscope. Low-density polymers were mainly recovered in the water column and at the surface of the sediment, whereas high-density polymers were found within all sediment sections. The vertical distribution of high-density polymers changes primarily with the sediment grain size. The distribution of each polymer type changes depending on the size and/or shape of the particles with complex interactions. The observed distributions were compared with the expected distributions based only on the vertical velocity formulas. Overall, the formulas used did not explain the sedimentation of a portion of low-density polymers and predicted a lower distribution in the sediment than those observed in the experiment. Increase of water quality in aquatic systems has become a hot button issue in recent decades. However, with the aim to implement an effective remediation strategy, the first step is to identify the sources of diffuse and point-source pollution using several tracers. In urban areas, B isotopes, Gd enrichment, Cl - or carbamazepine concentrations can be used as wastewater treatment plant tracers. In this study, a focus was made on the quantification of a wide variety of inorganic compounds (elements, ions, isotopic ratios) all along the Marque River, a small stream located in Northern France receiving effluents coming from seven wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The objectives were (i) to determine the importance of the WWTPs discharge during low water events, (ii) to assess the efficiency of conventional tracers in quantifying the contribution of the WWTPs and (iii) to investigate new potential tracers less commonly used. The results have shown, through statistical analyses ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance) tests, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and contribution calculations, that the WWTPs discharges strongly impact the water composition of all the watercourse and particularly during the first 6 km. However, due to high discharges of wastewaters not always well treated, some classical indicators (e.g. B, Rb/Sr) have shown limitations when used alone. The use of a set of relevant tracers including alkali metals could therefore be one solution for overcoming such a problem. Finally, other indicators like Rb/B or Gd/Pt ratios may also be a way to tackle this issue; they are indeed promising to discriminate the source of wastewaters., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. The way in which aquatic systems is sampled has a strong influence on our understanding of them, especially when they are highly dynamic. High frequency sampling has the advantage over spot sampling for representativeness but leads to a high amount of analysis. This study proposes a new methodology to choose when sampling accurately with an automated sampler coupled with a high frequency (HF) multiparameter probe. After each HF measurement, an optimised sampling algorithm (OSA) determines on-the-fly the relevance of taking a new sample in relation to previous waters already collected. Once the OSA was optimised, considering the number of HF parameters and their variabilities, it was demonstrated through a study case that the number of samples could be significantly reduced, while still covering periods of low and high variabilities. The comparison between the total HF dataset and the sampled subdataset shows that physicochemical parameter variability is preserved (Pearson correlations > 0.96) as well as the multiparameter variability (PCA axes remained similar with Tucker congruence > 0.99). This algorithm simplifies HF studies by making it easier to take samples during brief phenomena such as storms or accidental spills that are often poorly monitored. In addition, it optimises the number of samples to be taken to correctly describe a system and thus reduce the human and financial costs of these environmental studies., (Copyright © 2022. Microplastics are small (<5 mm) fragments of plastic debris that are ubiquitous in oceans and terrestrial ecosystems. Studies on microplastics in sediment and soil matrices are particularly challenging because of the need to separate the plastics from the sediments. We investigated the efficiencies of 18 combinations of six extracting solutions (ESs) (oil, water, oil-in-water, NaCl, oil-in-NaCl, and NaI) and three isolation methods (IMs) (hand stirring, centrifugation, and aeration) for fine and coarse sediments, with low and high density polymers. IMs did not affect the extraction efficiency. Except in case of oil, all ESs enabled good extraction (84 ± 17%) of light polymers (PE and PE-ABS). NaI presented the best extraction efficiency (71 ± 17%) for the densest polymers (PET, PES, and PA). For these ESs, fibers were extracted at a lower efficiency than pellets and fragments, and sediment gran size did not affect the extraction. For other ESs, mean extraction rates ranged from 5% to 48%. Overall, the extraction efficiencies were lower than those found in the literature, despite repeating the separation process three times. The collection of floating materials remained a problem, as plastics tended to adhere to the glass wall. Our work will help the comparability between previous and future monitoring results and the selection of the most suitable protocols for future studies. This work clearly demonstrates also that there is no robust protocol for extracting all types and forms of microplastics from fine sediments and that research efforts to arrive at a reliable method remain by taking account the interaction of MPs with other particles as well as the electrostatic properties of MP., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. This study aiming to determine the optimal conditions to degrade an organophosphate pesticide diazinon (DZN) at low levels concentrations (μg.mL -1 ) and to identify the by-products generated. The degradation processes utilized were the Fenton and photo-Fenton. The iron concentration [Fe 2+ ], the hydrogen peroxide concentrations [H 2 O 2 ], and the solution pH are the investigated parameters. The Doehlert three-parameter experimental design was applied to model and optimize both degradation processes. The mathematical models suggested were assessed and validated by application of analysis of variances ANOVA. In the case of Fenton process, the greatest yield of degradation (79%) was obtained at [Fe 2+ ] = 35 mg.L -1 (0.63 mmol.L -1 ), [H 2 O 2 ] = 423 mg.L -1 (12.44 mmol.L -1 ), and pH = 5.0. In photo-Fenton process, the maximum yield of degradation (96%) was obtained under the conditions of [Fe 2+ ] = 29 mg.L -1 (0.52 mmol.L -1 ), [H 2 O 2 ] = 258 mg.L -1 (7.59 mmol.L -1 ) and pH = 4.6. QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe), as extraction technique, and GC-MS/MS (gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry) were used to identify the by-products degradation of DZN. The identified compounds are diazoxon, triethyl phosphate, triethyl thiophosphate, 2-isopropyl-5-ethyl-6-methylpyrimidine-4-ol, 2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidine-4-ol (IMP) and hydroxydiazinon. Plastic wastes and their fragments (microplastics, MPs < 5 mm) represent a global, persistent, and ubiquitous threat to ecosystems. Their sources, transfers, and fates are still poorly understood, especially in rivers. To fill this gap, sediments were collected from two dredging disposal sites along the Aa River (France). Four pits were dug, and triplicate samples were obtained at four depths (down to 140 cm). The sediments were sieved to 5 mm to collect macroplastics (MaPs). MPs were separated from the sediment based on density using a NaI solution (1.6 g/mL). Suspected plastics were analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The studied sediments were found to be widely contaminated with concentrations ranging from 0.97 to 77 MaPs/kg and from 0.78 to 2800 MPs/kg, which were 1-4 orders of magnitude lower than those in most polluted European riverbeds. The MaPs were principally polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvinyl chloride films, whereas the MPs were mainly polyamide and polyester fibers. The plastic concentrations and features of the two sites, which were filled at two different times, differed. Several factors occurring before and after dredging operations may explain these discrepancies. Nevertheless, no relationships with the sediment features were noted, and thus, one major driving force could not be identified. At the site scale, more than 1 ton of plastic could be stored. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of dredged sediments for past plastic pollution studies and global plastic budget estimations.

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant of global concern owing to its great toxicity even at very low concentrations. Its toxicity depends on its chemical forms evidencing the importance to study its speciation. Dissolved Hg (Hg (d) ) and methylmercury (MeHg (d) ) monitoring in surface freshwaters represents a great challenge because of their very low concentrations and substantial temporal variability at different timescales. The Hg (d) temporal variability depends on the environmental conditions such as the hydrology, water temperature, redox potential (Eh), and solar photo cycle. Passive samplers represent an alternative to improve the assessment of Hg (d) and MeHg (d) concentrations in surface freshwaters by integrating their temporal variability. An original sampling strategy was designed to assess the relevance of 3-mercaptopropyl DGT (Diffusive Gradient in Thin films) to integrate in situ the temporal variations of labile Hg (Hg (DGT) ) and MeHg (MeHg (DGT) ) concentrations. This strategy was implemented on two rivers to study the dynamics of Hg (d) , Hg (DGT) , MeHg (d) and MeHg (DGT) at diurnal and annual timescales. We evidenced that Hg (DGT) and MeHg (DGT) concentrations were generally consistent with discrete sampling measurements of Hg (d) and MeHg (d) in dynamic surface freshwaters. However, Hg (DGT) concentrations were overestimated (2-16 times higher) in case of low flow or low water depth, low suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations and elevated daily photoperiod. The most probable hypothesis is that such conditions promoted Hg 0 production, and resulted in Hg 0 uptake by DGT. Anthropogenic metal contamination results in long-term environmental selective pressure with unclear impacts on bacterial communities, which comprise key players in ecosystem functioning. Since metal contamination poses serious toxicity and bioaccumulation issues, assessing their impact on environmental microbiomes is important to respond to current environmental and health issues. Despite elevated metal concentrations, the river sedimentary microbiome near the MetalEurop foundry (France) shows unexpected higher diversity compared with the upstream control site. In this work, a follow-up of the microbial community assembly during a metal contamination event was performed in microcosms with periodic renewal of the supernatant river water. Sediments of the control site were gradually exposed to a mixture of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in order to reach similar concentrations to MetalEurop sediments. Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons was performed. Metal-resistant genes, czcA and pbrA, as well as IncP plasmid content, were assessed by quantitative PCR. The outcomes of this study support previous in situ observations showing that metals act as community assembly managers, increasing diversity. After the exploitation of coal mines in the 19th and 20th centuries in northern France, many mining slag heaps (SH) were left without any particular management or monitoring. Currently, the influence of these SHs on the quality of surrounding wetlands is hardly known. The purpose of this work is to determine the water quality in the neighbourhood of two SHs located near the city of Douai and its influence on the distribution of aquatic invertebrates in local wetlands. Our approach involves (1) the spatial and temporal characterization of the water composition (anions, major elements, sulphide, DOC and alkalinity) and of the biological diversity (aquatic invertebrates) and (2), based on this chemical and biological screening, the establishment of relationships between water quality and biodiversity distribution through multivariate data analysis. The results clearly indicate that substantial leaching from the slag heaps occurs, given the very high concentrations of dissolved sulphates (in the range of 2 g L -1 ). While the pH remains weakly basic, indicating that the leaching water has been neutralized by the highly carbonated regional substratum, high levels of biodegradable organic matter and sulphate contents have been noticed. They sporadically cause significant drops in dissolved oxygen and the occurrence of dissolved sulphides that massively reduce biodiversity, qualitatively and quantitatively. In Summer, oxygen saturation is generally lower due to the higher rate of organic matter degradation, and the risk of anoxic episodes therefore increases. Finally, as wetlands are vulnerable environments, these preliminary results suggest that monitoring and management of these sites must be attempted quickly to avoid the degradation of those valuable habitats., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. During the last few decades, stormwater ponds have become an alternative management practice in order to avoid flooding and to contain rainwater and runoff in urban areas where impervious land cover has increased. A second purpose of stormwater ponds is to improve the quality of runoff water that is usually contaminated with nitrogen, phosphorus, metals and organic micropollutants. Processes used are based on natural methods such as settlement and contribute to minimize the impact of these inputs to the natural aquatic system. This study aims to better understand the behavior of a wet stormwater pond, Heron Lake (33 ha) located in the city of Villeneuve d'Ascq in northern France through various indicators [trace metals, PAHs, PCBs, caffeine (CAF), carbamazepine (CBZ), nutrients and pathogens]. For that purpose, water quality was monitored for 1 year, mainly at the entrance and at the outlet of the lake. Sampling have also been done in the downstream aquatic environment, the Marque River. Sediments were sampled in the lake to evaluate the pollution trapped during sedimentation. Our results of both water and sediment sampling highlight: (i) the wastewater input into the Heron Lake is estimated to be equivalent to that of roughly 3800 inhabitants; (ii) the removal rates observed at the outlet, relative to concentrations at the entrance channel, vary as follows for these dissolved species: 24% for NO 3 - and PO 4 3- , 28% for CBZ, 35% for Cu, 63% for Pb, 78% for CAF, 84% for Zn and up to 93% for NH 4 + ; (iii) there are high levels of sediment contamination with metals, PAHs and PCBs at the entrance channel; (iv) the eutrophication of this pond is attributed to persistent high nutrient concentrations in both water and sediment, and has contributed to the development of an invasive macrophyte, the Elodea nuttallii; and (v) there appears to be only a negligible impact of the discharge from the lake to the natural watercourse, contributing annual loads of <2 up to 6% of the total amount of Cu, Pb, Zn, CAF, CBZ and nutrients measured in the Marque River, and having a slight diluting effect on concentrations in the Marque River., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Human activities on the shoreline generate a growing pollution, creating deleterious habitats in coastal zones. Some species nevertheless succeed in such harsh milieus, raising the question of their tolerance to environmental stress. The annelid Hediste diversicolor lives buried in the sediments, directly exposed to contaminants trapped in the mud. After verifying the similarity of their genetic contexts, we compared reproductive output and individual immune resistance measures of populations living in polluted vs. 'clean' sediments, and related these assessments with measures of phthalates and metal pollution, and associated toxicity indices. Chemical analyses predicted no toxicity to the local infauna, and phenological studies evidenced no direct cost of living in noxious habitats. However, populations exposed to pollutants showed a significantly reduced survival upon infection with a local pathogen. Surprisingly, physiological studies evidenced a basal overinflammatory state in the most exposed populations. This over-activated baseline immune phenotype likely generates self-damage leading to enhanced immune cell death rate and immune failure. Monitoring the immune status of individual worms living in anthropic areas could thus be used as a reliable source of information regarding the actual health of wild populations., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, a method for evaluating the in-situ degradation of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) in sediments is presented. The methodology is adapted from the passive sampler technique, which commonly uses the dissipation rate of labeled compounds loaded in passive sampler devices to sense the environmental conditions of exposure. In the present study, polymeric passive samplers (made of polyethylene strips) loaded with a set of labeled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitro-PAH were immersed in sediments (in field and laboratory conditions) to track the degradation processes. This approach is theoretically based on the fact that a degradation process induces a steeper concentration gradient of the labeled compounds in the surrounding sediment, thereby increasing their compound dissipation rates compared with their dissipation in abiotic conditions. Postulating that the degradation magnitude is the same for the labeled compounds loaded in polyethylene strips and for their native homologs that are potentially present in the sediment, the field degradation of 3 nitro-PAH (2-nitro-fluorene, 1-nitro-pyrene, 6-nitro-chrysene) was semi-quantitatively analyzed using the developed method., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The resuspension of polluted sediments by boat traffic could release substantial amounts of metals to the water column, affecting at the same time their bioavailability. In order to characterize the impact of sediment resuspensions on biota, caged amphipods have been deployed on three different channelized watercourses in Northern France. Firstly, the biological responses of transplanted freshwater gammarid amphipods, Gammarus fossarum, described by trace metal accumulation, feeding and reproduction activities were quite similar for the three water courses despite the differences of metal contamination and navigability. Secondly, the concentrations of metals accumulated in gammarids never exceeded the contamination thresholds previously defined for Co, Cu, Cr and Zn. Values were in the same order of magnitude whatever the studied site despite: (i) large differences noticed in the sediment quality and (ii) some concentrations in the overlying waters exceeding the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) defined by the Water Framework Directive. Conversely, Pb was highly bioaccumulated with values systematically exceeding the threshold value whatever the site. Therefore, the impact of navigation cannot be proved and the difference between the 3 monitoring periods is rather attributed to environmental variability, probably linked to the seasonality. Moreover, this study also confirms that organisms sampled from a local population in the vicinity of the three studied watercourses could be used as test organisms, leading to similar results than the ones obtained with reference gammarids initially used for developing all the biological responses. The bioavailability of metals was estimated in three river sediments (Sensée, Scarpe, and Deûle Rivers) impacted by different levels of Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn (Northern France). For that, a combination of geochemistry and biological responses (bacteria and chironomids) was used. The results obtained illustrate the complexity of the notion of "bioavailability." Indeed, geochemical indexes suggested a low toxicity, even in surface sediments with high concentrations of total metals and a predicted severe effect levels for the organisms. This was also suggested by the abundance of total bacteria as determined by DAPI counts, with high bacterial cell numbers even in contaminated areas. However, a fraction of metals may be bioavailable as it was shown for chironomid larvae which were able to accumulate an important quantity of metals in surface sediments within just a few days.We concluded that (1) the best approach to estimate bioavailability in the selected sediments is a combination of geochemical and biological approaches and that (2) the sediments in the Deûle and Scarpe Rivers are highly contaminated and may impact bacterial populations but also benthic invertebrates.

The biogeochemical behaviors of small rivers that pass through suburban areas are difficult to understand because of the multi-origin inputs that can modify their behavior. In this context, a monitoring strategy has been designed for the Marque River, located in Lille Metropolitan area of northern France, that includes both low-frequency monitoring over a one-year period (monthly sampling) and high frequency monitoring (measurements every 10 minutes) in spring and summer. Several environmental and chemical parameters are evaluated including rainfall events, river flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, nutritive salts and dissolved organic matter. Our results from the Marque River show that (i) it is impacted by both urban and agricultural inputs, and as a consequence, the concentrations of phosphate and inorganic nitrogen have degraded the water quality; (ii) the classic photosynthesis/respiration processes are disrupted by the inputs of organic matter and nutritive salts; (iii) during dry periods, the urban sewage inputs (treated or not) are more important during the day, as indicated by higher river flows and maximal concentrations of ammonium; (iv) phosphate concentrations depend on oxygen contents in the river; (v) high nutrient concentrations result in eutrophication of the Marque River with lower pH and oxygen concentrations in summer. During rainfalls, additional inputs of ammonium, biodegradable organic matter as well as sediment resuspension result in anoxic events; and finally (vi) concentrations of nitrate are approximately constant over the year, except in winter when higher inputs can be recorded. Having better identified the processes responsible for the observed water quality, a more informed remediation effort can be put forward to move this suburban river to a good status of water quality.

A new laboratory-made Zn-ferrite (ZnFe2O4) binding gel is fully tested using Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) probes to measure total As [including inorganic As(III) and As(V), as well as MonoMethyl Arsenic Acid (MMAA(V)) and DiMethyl Arsenic Acid (DMAA(V))] in river waters and sediment pore waters. The synthesis of the binding gel is easy, cheap and its insertion into the acrylamide gel is not problematic. An important series of triplicate tests have been carried out to validate the use of the Zn-ferrite binding gel in routine for several environmental matrixes studies, in order to test: (i) the effect of pH on the accumulation efficiency of inorganic As species; (ii) the reproducibility of the results; (iii) the accumulation efficiency of As species; (iv) the effects of the ionic strength and possible competitive anions; and (v) the uptake and the elution efficiency of As species after accumulation in the binding gel. All experimental conditions have been reproduced using two other existing binding gels for comparison: ferrihydrite and Metsorb® HMRP 50. We clearly demonstrate that the Zn-ferrite binding gel is at least as good as the two other binding gels, especially for pH values higher than 8. In addition, by taking into consideration the diffusion rates of As(III) and As(V) in the gel, combining the 3-mercaptopropyl [accumulating only As(III)] with the Zn-ferrite binding gels allows for performing speciation studies. An automatic trace metal monitoring station (ATMS) have been implemented in the river bank of the Deûle canal in the city of Auby (northern France), in the vicinity of metallurgical industries that have heavily polluted sediments, in Cd, Pb and Zn. Additionally, the fluvial traffic in this river is intense and surface sediments are resuspended several times per day. This paper is the following part of that published recently (Superville et al., 2014) in this journal. The main purpose of this paper is to present new information on diel and seasonal variations of trace metals in the Deûle River and highlight the potential role of sediments in the contamination of the water column. To this end, Cd, Zn and Pb were monitored at a high frequency (~1h(-1)) by voltammetry, distinguishing an electrolabile and an acid-leachable fraction. Our measurements revealed that (i) acid-leachable Cd is mainly bound to light particles such as clays and carbonates and its daily behaviour does not really depend on the intensity of sediment remobilisation process; (ii) acid-leachable Pb and Zn exhibit some seasonal variations which are explained here, suggesting they should at least partly depend on the ageing of hydrous ferric oxides in the sediments; (iii) in spring, the electrolability of Zn increases in agreement with the biological activity that may break some strong association between Zn and ligands and/or particles (e.g., organic matter, hydrous ferric oxides, etc.). This trend is observed for electrolabile Pb later in summer, but on a smaller scale since this metal is generally more strongly scavenged and less labile than Zn; and (iv) electrolabile Mn concentrations increase during the day due to desorption process of resuspended sediment particles in the water., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The fate of arsenic - a redox sensitive metalloid - in surface sediments is closely linked to early diagenetic processes. The review presents the main redox mechanisms and final products of As that have been evidenced over the last years. Oxidation of organic matter and concomitant reduction of oxidants by bacterial activity result in redox transformations of As species. The evolution of the sediment reactivity will also induce secondary abiotic reactions like complexation/de-complexation, sorption, precipitation/dissolution and biotic reactions that could, for instance, lead to the detoxification of some As species. Overall, abiotic redox reactions that govern the speciation of As mostly involve manganese (hydr)-oxides and reduced sulfur species produced by the sulfate-reducing bacteria. Bacterial activity is also responsible for the inter-conversion between As(V) and As(III), as well as for the production of methylated arsenic species. In surficial sediments, sorption processes also control the fate of inorganic As(V), through the formation of inner sphere complexes with iron (hydr)-oxides, that are biologically reduced in buried sediment. Arsenic species can also be bound to organic matter, either directly to functional groups or indirectly through metal complexes. Finally, even if the role of reduced sulfur species in the cycling of arsenic in sediments has been evidenced, some of the transformations remain hypothetical and deserve further investigation., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Seasonal variation in trace metal contamination in surface sediments was studied through high resolution profiles assessed monthly by DGT probes in muddy sediments of the North Sea. General parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen and sulfides were also recorded to estimate their role in the speciation of trace metals. Experimental data were included in a thermodynamic equilibrium model to calculate major (geo)chemical processes at the water-sediment interface and to predict the fate of the trace metals in case of (physico-)chemical changes. Results showed lowest Fe, Co, Ni and Cd concentrations in summer, which are most probably due to the very high sulfide concentrations according to our theoretical calculations. Cu and Pb behavior were found to be less influenced by sulfides, since they are also strongly associated to organic matter. In bacteria a metal may be defined as bioavailable if it crosses the cytoplasmic membrane to reach the cytoplasm. Once inside the cell, specific metal resistance systems may be triggered. In this research, specific metal resistance genes were used to estimate metal bioavailability in sediment microbial communities. Gene levels were measured by quantitative PCR and correlated to metals in sediments using five different protocols to estimate dissolved, particle-adsorbed and occluded metals. The best correlations were obtained with czcA (a Cd/Zn/Co efflux pump) and Cd/Zn adsorbed or occluded in particles. Only adsorbed Co was correlated to czcA levels. We concluded that the measurement of czcA gene levels by quantitative PCR is a promising tool which may complement the classical approaches used to estimate Cd/Zn/Co bioavailability in sediment compartments., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Sediments in the Deûle River (northern France) are severely polluted by metals in the vicinity of several metallurgical plants. The aim of this paper is to identify the role played by the recurrent resuspension of these polluted sediments by boat traffic on the dissolved Pb and Zn concentrations in the river. For that purpose, several high-frequency on-line monitoring campaigns were performed. Our results clearly suggest that the resuspension of sedimentary particles into the overlying water significantly increased the dissolved electrolabile Pb and Zn contents. This increase does not persist for a long time because at night and during weekends and holidays, when the boat traffic strongly slows down, Pb and Zn concentrations drop again quickly. Our data also indicate that the biological processes (such as photosynthetic and respiration activities), diffusive and benthic fluxes, as well as dilution of pore water into the overlying water during sediment remobilization do not contribute significantly to the sharp increase of dissolved Pb and Zn concentrations in the river during the day. The good correlation between turbidity and electrolabile metal concentration allows us to discard slow AVS (Acid Volatile Sulfides) oxidation as well. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of metal contamination on the biological responses of 0-group juvenile European flounder and to assess and compare the quality of four estuarine habitats located in the Eastern English Channel. Fish otolith growth and condition indices (RNA : DNA ratio, Fulton's K condition index) were measured and found to be significantly lower in individuals from the Seine estuary compared to those of the Canche, Authie and Somme estuaries. No obvious effects of hydrological condition or food availability on the flounder biological responses were observed. Sediments from the Seine showed the highest metal concentrations, bioavailable proportion and enrichment factors. Higher metal concentrations were observed in fish from the Seine compared to the other ones caught in less polluted estuaries. These results suggest that contaminants may have a negative impact on the early life history stage of flounder.

Our current view about the relationship between metals and bacteria in marine sediments might be biased because most studies only use ex situ approaches to quantify metals. The aim of the present research was to compare ex situ and in situ methods of metal measurement (DET and DGT--diffusive equilibration or diffusive gradients in thin-films) and relate the results with two commonly used microbiological variables (bacterial biomass and bacterial diversity as revealed by DGGE). No previous studies have used such in situ approaches in microbial ecology. For biomass and most of the investigated trace metals (Ag, Cd, Sn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Al) no significant correlations were found. The exceptions were Fe, Mn, Co, and As which behave like micronutrients. For bacterial diversity, no relevant relationships were found. An adaptable automatic trace metal monitoring system (ATMS) was assembled and embedded in a mobile monitoring station belonging to the French Water Agency Artois-Picardie (AEAP) and deployed in the field to measure the concentration of trace metals (electroactive and acid leachable fractions) in natural waters by anodic stripping voltammetry with a hanging mercury drop electrode. Cathodic stripping voltammetry procedures were included to estimate the concentration of dissolved oxygen and reduced sulphur species. The concept of the measuring system enables easy adaptation of methods and procedures to analytes of concern and gives the opportunity to undertake in real-time a routine analysis of the dynamic behaviour of trace metals in river, pond and seawater. The system was tested in two aquatic bodies: in a pond where eutrophication processes occur recurrently and in the Deûle River, where sediments are highly contaminated by several metals such as Pb and Zn and frequently resuspended because of the river traffic. Preliminary field studies demonstrated that trace metal concentrations can evolve quickly as a function of time, depending on the turbidity and luminescence, i.e. day-night cycles. The obtained results were compared with an Environmental Quality Standard (EQS), the Criteria Maximum Concentration (CMC) and the Criterion Continuous Concentration (CCC). A procedure to determine lead and zinc by anodic stripping voltammetry and copper by cathodic stripping voltammetry in natural river samples was developed and validated. Cu determination involves the adsorption of Cu complexes with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) onto a hanging mercury drop electrode. All samples were studied at natural pH and following optimal conditions were found: an accumulation step at -1.3 V (all potential values in the paper are given versus the Ag/AgCl, [KCl]=3M reference electrode) during 30s for determination of Zn contents and at -0.7 V during 60s for determination of Pb contents. Concerning Cu analysis, the optimal oxine concentration was found to be 10(-5)M with a deposition potential of -1.1 V during 30s followed by an adsorption step at -0.25 V during 15s. This procedure was afterwards validated by using certified reference freshwater and performing an intercalibration exercise. Finally the method was successfully applied in the Deûle River, highly contaminated by dissolved Zn and to a lesser extent by Pb and Cu, due to past and present activities of metallurgical plants. Under these optimal conditions, metal concentrations measured by our voltammetric procedures in the Deûle River were found in the range 12.4-23.2 nM for Zn, 1.7-3.2 nM for Pb and 4.9-7.6 nM for Cu., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. PAHs, PCDD/Fs and non-ortho PCBs have been assessed in Yser and Upper-Scheldt river sediments. Higher contamination levels were observed in the Upper-Scheldt sediments: maximum concentrations for the 16 US-EPA PAHs, PCDD/Fs and non-ortho PCBs respectively amount to 8.9 mg kg(-1), 12 ng TEQ kg(-1) and 5.1 ng TEQ kg(-1). Diagnostic PAH ratios in sediments and atmospheric samples suggest that the PAH compounds are from pyrolytic origin, more specifically combustion processes. The huge consumption of coal in cokes-ovens and smelters and its use for house-heating in Northern France, although decreasing during the last decades, are in support of that suggestion. PCDD/F fingerprints in sediments and deposition material indicate that OCDD is the dominant congener. In addition use of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the past led to a minor contribution of PCDD/Fs in our sediment samples. Non-ortho PCBs form a substantial fraction of the total TEQ concentrations observed in the sediments. The monitoring of dissolved zinc in the Deûle river was undertaken at three different periods of the years 2008 and 2009. Electrolabile concentrations of Zn were estimated every 2 hours for several weeks by using an ATMS (Automatic Trace metal Monitoring System) based on voltammetric measurements using a solid Ag-Hg rotating disc working electrode. Complementary measurements were carried out with DGT (Diffusive Gradient in Thin films) pistons deployed directly in the river for 24 hours. Water samples filtrated at 0.45 μm were also analysed by HR-ICP-MS to estimate the total dissolved concentrations of zinc and other trace metals. High frequency monitoring of zinc over several weeks in the Deûle river indicated that the concentration could change significantly over short time periods. Resuspension of polluted sediment and biological activities are two main factors that control the behaviour of zinc in the Deûle river. Furthermore, in May 2009, daily cycles of the electrolabile zinc fraction have been observed at relatively constant total dissolved concentration. It is assumed that this particular behaviour of zinc is based on an exchange between colloids and/or nonelectrolabile forms and free cation and inorganic complexes at a daily time scale.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the potential sediment cumulative damage and toxicity due to metal contamination in a polluted zone of Deûle river (in northern France) from nearby two smelters. Metal-enrichment factors and geoaccumulation indices measured with sediment depth revealed that--compared to background levels either in local reference soils or in world rivers sediments/suspended particulate matter--Cd contributed to the highest pollution levels, followed by Zn, Pb and to a much lesser extent Cu and Ni. A comparison of the vertical distribution of AVS (acid volatile sulfides), SEM (simultaneously extracted metals), TMC (total metal concentrations), TOC (total organic carbon) and interstitial water-metal concentrations in the sediment allowed us to highlight the extent of toxicity caused by Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni and Cu and to raise the possibility of their association with certain geochemical phases. To assess the actual environmental impacts of these metals in Deûle river, numerical sediment quality guidelines were further used in the present work. Sedimentary Pb, Zn, and Cd contents largely exceeded PEC (probable effect concentration) values reported as consensus-based sediment quality guidelines for freshwater ecosystems. As for risks of toxicity from pore waters, metal concentrations reached their maxima at the surficial layers of the sediment (1-3 cm) and IWCTU (Interstitial Water Criteria Toxicity Unit) observed for Pb and to a lesser extent Cd, violated the corresponding water quality data recommended by USEPA., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. An automatic trace metal monitoring station (ATMS) system was implemented to study seasonal and short time changes in selected metal concentrations in two river courses influenced by mine drainage. High frequency monitoring over periods of months revealed daily variations of zinc, iron and copper, and also proved the use of ATMS as an early warning system in such polluted environments. Complementary measurements with ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry), ionic chromatography, and thermodynamic equilibrium calculations also gave some new insights into the geochemical behaviour of the metals in these two rivers.

The behaviour of Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Cd, Pb and Ni has been studied during early diagenesis in three different riverine sediments (Spierre, Lys and Sheldt). For that purpose (1) pore waters were extracted from sediment cores by centrifugation under nitrogen and further analyzed for the determination of total dissolved metal concentrations and (2) DET and DGT probes have been deployed in situ for the determination of high resolution profiles of labile and total dissolved metal concentrations. Furthermore, sulfidization processes have been examined; they revealed a production of pyrite near the water-sediment interface at Helkijn and Wervik sampling sites, probably due to a partial re-oxidation of reduced sulphur species. In Spierre sediments, where Eh values are the most negative, pyrite production should be mainly due to strict anaerobic processes. Concentrations of AVS in Spierre sediments are also very high and result in low TI values and low trace metal concentrations in the pore waters. Otherwise, in Wervik sediments, the low pH values combined to a TI value close to 0 results in the highest observed dissolved trace metal levels. DOS remains low at the three sites, since it does not exceed 0.4. In Wervik and Helkijn, the limitation is probably due to low sedimentary inputs of sulphate. In Spierre, sulphate is never exhausted in the pore water, suggesting a limitation of the DOS by a lack of bio-degradable organic matter. Values of Cd, Cu and Pb DGT concentrations remain low in pore waters whatever the site, due to their strong affinity with the reduced sulphur pool. It has also been demonstrated that the labile fractions of Pb and Cd are the lowest and do not exceed 0.5, while Co and Ni are the most available metals.

High resolution profiles of Mn, Tl and Fe concentrations have been assessed in the pore waters of river Leie sediments at Warneton and Menen (at the border of Belgium and France) by DET (Diffusive Equilibrium in Thin Films) and DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films) techniques. The oxidized, solid Mn (IV), Tl (III) and Fe (III) compounds were reduced in the suboxic (+255 to -20 mV versus Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)) riverine sediments and since these reduced species are much more soluble also they are released into the pore waters. The highest DET (total dissolved) concentrations of Fe (76 mg l(-1)), Mn (2 mg l(-1)) were observed at the station of Menen, while Tl maxima differed only slightly between the 3 surveys (21 to 27 microg l(-1)). The average ratios of Fe/Mn/Tl in the pore waters at the 3 sampling stations are fairly constant for both the DET and DGT samplings. However, the results indicate that compared to Fe and Tl a greater proportion of the Mn measured by DET is accumulated by DGT, reflecting the ready supply of Mn from solid phase to solution.

The techniques of DET (diffusive equilibrium in thin films) and DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films) were applied to obtain high-resolution vertical profiles of trace metals in freshwater sediments. In the framework of the EU-Interreg project Stardust (http://www.vliz.be/projects/stardust/) between France and Belgium, in which the mobility of sediment bound metals is investigated, sediment samples were collected from the Upper Scheldt River (at Helkijn, Belgium) and the Leie River (at Warneton, located at the Belgian-French border). Intra- and inter-laboratory comparisons of the gel techniques were carried out between the two laboratories involved. In general, a good agreement was observed, taking sediment heterogeneity into account. At both stations, metal pore water profiles show more or less similar tendencies although the sediment at Warneton was more anoxic than at Helkijn. A strong correlation between Fe and Co was found at Helkijn as well as at Warneton. The metal gradients at the water/sediment interface were calculated from the high resolution profiles and the conventional, low resolution profiles. Significant differences were observed.
