To defuse risks of antibiotic residues in effluent to achieve safe wastewater reuse, direct hydrolysis of the functional group responsible for the antibacterial activity, such as the of β-lactam ring in β-lactam antibiotics, has been recognized as an efficient and cost-effective strategy. However, the instability of natural hydrolases limits their use in treating antibiotic-containing wastewater. Herein, inspired by the active site of natural hydrolase, a Ce-based nanohydrolase was created for rapid hydrolysis of β-lactam antibiotics. The typical β-lactam antibiotic, penicillin G (PG), could be totally removed by the nanohydrolase within 2 min with a hydrolysis efficiency of 44%, and the hydrolysis efficiency could reach 98% within 10 min. It revealed that Ce(IV) in the nanohydrolase adsorbed PG via Lewis acid-Lewis base interaction to activate the β-lactam ring, while the -OH on Ce(III) served as nucleophile to attack the β-lactam ring, thereby promoting the hydrolysis of PG. The Ce-based nanohydrolase also showed good catalytic hydrolysis performance towards other commonly used β-lactam antibiotics and structurally related chemicals, implying its substrate universality. In addition to having high hydrolytic activity similar to that of natural hydrolases, this nanohydrolase exhibited extraordinary reusability and potential for practical applications that natural hydrolases do not possess. Wolframite (FeWO 4 ), a typical polyoxometalate, serves as an auspicious candidate for heterogeneous catalysts, courtesy of its high chemical stability and electronic properties. However, the electron-deficient surface-active Fe species in FeWO 4 are insufficient to cleave H 2 O 2 via Fe redox-mediated Fenton-like catalytic reaction. Herein, we doped Sulfur (S) atom into FeWO 4 catalysts to refine the electronic structure of FeWO 4 for H 2 O 2 activation and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Furthermore, spin-state reconstruction on S-doped FeWO 4 was found to effectively refine the electronic structure of Fe in the d orbital, thereby enhancing H 2 O 2 activation. S doping also accelerated electron transfer during the conversion of sulfur species, promoting the cycling of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Consequently, S-doped FeWO 4 bolstered the Fenton-like reaction by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to FeWO 4 . Significantly, the developed S-doped FeWO 4 exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency of approximately 100% for SMX within 40 min in real water samples. This underscores its extensive pH adaptability, robust catalytic stability, and leaching resistance. The matrix effects of water constituents on the performance of S-doped FeWO 4 were also investigated, and the results showed that a certain amount of Cl - , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , HCO 3 - and PO 4 3- exhibited negligible effects on the degradation of SMX. Theoretical calculations corroborate that the distinctive spin-state reconstruction of Fe center in S-doped FeWO 4 is advantageous for H 2 O 2 decomposition. Micro(nano)plastics widely detected in aquatic environments have caused serious threat to water quality security. However, as a potential important source of micro(nano)plastics in surface water during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ecological risks of face mask waste to aquatic environments remain poorly understood. Herein, we comprehensively characterized the micro(nano)plastics and organic compounds released from four daily used face masks in aqueous environments and further evaluated their potential impacts on aquatic ecosystem safety by quantitative genotoxicity assay. Results from spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrum showed that plastic microfibers/particles (∼11%-83%) and leachable organic compounds (∼15%-87%) were dominantly emitted pollutants, which were significantly higher than nanoplastics (< ∼5%) based on mass of carbon. Additionally, a toxicogenomics approach using green fluorescence protein-fused whole-cell array revealed that membrane stress was the primary response upon the exposure to micro(nano)plastics, whereas the emitted organic chemicals were mainly responsible for DNA damage involving most of the DNA repair pathways (e.g., base/nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, double-strand break repair), implying their severe threat to membrane structure and DNA replication of microorganisms. Therefore, the persistent release of discarded face masks derived pollutants might exacerbate water quality and even adversely affect aquatic microbial functions. Compared to individual UV or chlorine disinfection, the combined UV and chlorine (i.e., UV/chlorine) can substantially promote the degradation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the effluent by generating radicals. However, the mechanisms of ARG degradation induced by radicals during UV/chlorine treatment remain largely unknown, limiting further enhancement of ARG degradation by process optimization. Herein, we aimed to uncover the role of different radicals in ARG degradation and the molecular mechanisms of ARG degradation by radicals in UV/chlorine process. The ClO was proven to be responsible for the enhanced ARG degradation during UV/chlorine treatment, while the other radicals (OH, Cl, and Cl 2 - ) played a minor role. This is because ClO possessed both high steady-state concentration and high reactivity toward ARGs (rate constant: 4.29 × 10 10 M -1 s -1 ). The ClO might collaborate with free chlorine to degrade ARG. The ClO degraded ARGs by selectively attacking guanine and thymine but failed to induce strand breakage, while chlorine could break the strand of ARGs. Ultimately, ClO cooperated with chlorine to degrade ARGs quickly by hydroxylation and chlorination of bases and produce many chlorine- and nitrogen-containing products as revealed by high-resolution mass spectrometry. To date, eutrophication becomes a great concern of vulnerable aquatic systems. Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) discharged from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) holds a large source of phosphorus in receiving water. However, due to the complexity of DOP, their variation and fate in WWTP remain unknown at the molecular level, and are always overlooked. Here, the variation of DOP in a WWTP was uncovered via Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Results show that 95% of DOP in the influent could be removed by the secondary biological treatment processes. The removed DOP species were mainly lipids with the molecular characteristics of low oxygen content, low unsaturation and low aromaticity. Meanwhile, during biological treatments, some new DOP species, especially lignin/carboxylic rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM) that possessed high oxygen content, high unsaturation and high aromaticity, were produced and released into the secondary effluent. In the subsequent tertiary treatment, coagulation by aluminum salt tended to remove high molecular weight and high oxygen content DOP species in the secondary effluent, which was complementary to the biological treatment. However, the sand filter usually retained microorganisms, which would result in the generation of new DOP species in this process. During the final ultraviolet disinfection process, DOP was effectively mineralized to phosphate, especially the species with high molecular weight and highly unsaturated aromatic DOP species (e.g., lignin/CRAM and tannin), which had higher UV absorbance. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), an emerging and persistent pollutant, could cause toxicity effects on aquatic organisms. However, this was generally assessed under high exposure concentrations of PFOA and nutrient-enriched conditions, which was not accordant with the actual environments. Therefore, to comprehensively understand the toxicity effects of PFOA on aquatic organisms, the cellular responses of microalgae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, to PFOA under different concentrations (≤ 1.0 mg/L) and nutrient conditions were investigated in this study. Results show that PFOA at concentrations less than 1.0 mg/L had no significant effects on algal growth and chlorophyll contents, and no oxidative damages were generated to destroy membrane integrity and morphology. However, N,P-limited and -starved conditions significantly decreased algal growth and chlorophyll contents, and induced oxidative stresses to ruin the structure and function of cell membrane. Moreover, the deficiency of P had more severe negative effect on algae than that of N, and they both influenced the toxicity responses of microalgae to 1.0 mg/L PFOA. The adsorption and uptake percentages of PFOA by algal cells were both less than 10%, and increased adsorption but decreased uptake of PFOA amounts occurred under N,P-limited and -starved conditions. Free DNA bases are widely present in the environments, and can be utilized by bacteria for their nucleic acids synthesis or as nutrition sources. In sunlit natural waters, these free bases probably undergo photodegradation which would change the bioavailable bases contents. Though the photodegradation of DNA has been investigated, the photodegradation behaviors of free bases may be quite different from those of DNA-confined bases in consideration of their different chemical environments. Herein, the photodegradation of four free bases (guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine) was investigated. Results show that direct photodegradation of free bases in phosphate buffer caused by UV was slow. However, the photodegradation of these free bases were greatly enhanced in dissolved organic matter (DOM) solution. In the presence of 10-50 mg/L DOM, the photodegradation rates of free bases were increased by 1.85-14.6 times compared to the controls without DOM. DOM could result in indirect photodegradation by producing hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) under irradiation, and this indirect photodegradation enhanced and dominated the free bases photodegradation. The •OH was involved in all four bases photodegradation, while the 1 O 2 only participated in guanine photodegradation. In phosphate buffer, the fastest photodegradation bases were pyrimidine, however, guanine became the fastest photodegradation base in DOM solution due to the selective oxidation of guanine by 1 O 2 . Ionic liquids, a kind of emerging and persistent organic contaminants, always coexist with heavy metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments. However, the feasibility of phytoremediation to remove ionic liquids and heavy metals co-contaminants is still unclear. Thus, in this study, the hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the combined effect of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C 4 mim] + Br - ) and cadmium (Cd 2+ ) on growth and physiological indictors of perennial ryegrass, together with their uptake and translocation by plants. Results show that the exposure of ryegrass to [C 4 mim] + and Cd 2+ mixture significantly inhibited the biomass growth and affected the photosynthetic pigments contents in leaves. The increases of lipid peroxidation and catalase, peroxidase activity were also observed under the co-exposure experiments. The mixture toxicity of [C 4 mim] + and Cd 2+ to ryegrass growth showed an additive effect predicted by concentration addition and independent action. [C 4 mim] + uptake and acropetal translocation by ryegrass were significantly inhibited with dosing Cd 2+ . In contrast, [C 4 mim] + had no obvious effect on Cd 2+ uptake by ryegrass, while enhanced Cd 2+ translocation from roots to shoots occurred with increasing [C 4 mim] + dosages. Extracellular DNA (eDNA), which is derived from lysis or secretion of cells, is ubiquitous in various environments and crucial for gene dissemination, bacterial metabolism, biofilm integrity, and aquatic monitoring. However, these processes are largely influenced by damage to eDNA. Photodamage to eDNA, one of the most important types of DNA damage in natural waters, thus far remains unclear. In particular, the roles of the ubiquitous dissolved organic matter (DOM) in this process have yet to be determined. In this study, eDNA photodamage, including both deoxynucleoside damage and strand breaks, proved to be significantly influenced by DOM. DOM competed with eDNA for photons to inhibit the direct photodamage of eDNA. Nevertheless, DOM was photosensitized to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) (i.e., hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 )) to enhance the indirect photodamage of eDNA. The ·OH induced damage to four deoxynucleosides and strand breaks, and the 1 O 2 substantially enhanced deoxyguanosine damage. The presence of DOM changed the main photodamage products of deoxynucleosides, additional oxidation products induced by ROS formed besides pyrimidine dimers caused by UV. Results indicate that DOM-mediated indirect photodamage contributed significantly to eDNA photodamage in most water bodies. This study revealed the previously unrecognized crucial role of DOM in the decay of eDNA in waters.

Extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) contribute to antibiotic resistance, and as such, they pose a serious threat to human health. eARGs, regarded as an emerging contaminant, have been widely detected in various bodies of water. Degradation greatly weakens their distribution potential and environmental risks. Dissolved organic matter (DOM), mainly consisted of humic substances, carbohydrates, and organic acids, is ubiquitous in diverse waters and significantly affects the degradation of coexisting contaminants. However, the photodegradation of eARGs in natural water, especially regarding the roles of DOM in this process, remains unknown. Herein, we investigated the eARGs photodegradation in waters with and without DOM. Illumination has been found to effectively photodegrade eARGs, and this process was significantly enhanced by DOM. Further experiments revealed that photosensitization of DOM produced hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) to enhance plasmid strand breaks and produced singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to accelerate the guanine oxidation, which in turn promoted the photodegradation of plasmid-carried eARGs. Transformation assays indicated that eARGs transformation efficiencies were reduced after their photodegradation. The presence of DOM accelerated the decreases of eARGs transformation efficiencies under illumination. DOM concentration and some ions (e.g., NO 3 - , NO 2 - , HCO 3 - , Br - , and Fe 3+ ) affected • OH or 1 O 2 levels, further influencing the photodegradation of eARGs. Overall, eARGs photodegradation in aquatic environments is a crucial process both in the reduction of eARGs concentrations and in transformation efficiencies. This work facilitated us to better understand the fate of eARGs in waters.

Organic phosphorus (OP), one of the main forms of phosphorus in effluent from biological wastewater treatment plants, may contribute to the bioavailable phosphorus pool as well as water eutrophication. However, little is known about the photomineralization of OP or the possible impacts on the phosphorus cycle in water bodies. Herein, the photomineralization of effluent OP was investigated. An increase in orthophosphate concentration was observed under illumination. The 31 P liquid nuclear magnetic resonance spectra demonstrated that the release of orthophosphate resulted from photomineralization of OP. Furthermore, the photoproduced hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were proved to play a dominant role in the OP photomineralization. Nitrate, effluent organic matter (EfOM), and Fe(III) presented in effluent were the main chromophores for ·OH photoproduction, and their contributions to ·OH production and photomineralization of OP followed the order: nitrate > EfOM > Fe(III). Additionally, the carbonate (or bicarbonate) in the effluent and high pH were unfavorable for OP photomineralization. The present study revealed the photomineralization behavior of OP in actual effluent, suggesting that photomineralization of OP might contribute to eutrophication and may play a non-negligible role in phosphorus turnover in water bodies.

The photodegradation of discharged effluent organic matter (EfOM) changes its composition and shifts its impacts on pollutant migration and transformation in receiving waters. However, to date, EfOM photodegradation processes are not well understood due to the complexity and heterogeneity of EfOM. Herein, the spectroscopic analysis including ultra violet-visible (UV-Vis), fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopies coupled with two-dimensional correlation analysis (2D-COS) were used to draw a comprehensive view of EfOM photodegradation and involving mechanisms. Results revealed that the photolability of each component in EfOM followed the order: tannin-like > humic-like > protein-like > carbohydrate-like and aliphatic compounds. The photolability of different components of EfOM were found to be related to the photolability of their functional groups. Specifically, the aromatic, carboxylic, phenolic and quinonoid groups associated with humic or tannin-like compounds were more prone to be photodegraded than amides in proteins or C-OH and C-O-C in carbohydrates. Furthermore, the humic-like components, dominating the light absorption of EfOM, were found to be degraded by direct photolysis. Nevertheless, the photodegradation of tannin-like and protein-like components were mainly due to the indirect photodegradation by ROS and 3 OM ⁎ . Furthermore, results indicated that UV light, rather than visible light, was responsible for the photodegradation of EfOM. The spectroscopic techniques integrated with 2D-COS analysis could serve as a powerful tool with which to clarify complex EfOM photodegradation process as well as to improve our understanding of the fate of discharged EfOM and related environmental processes., (Copyright © 2018. Atmospheric deposition of mercury (Hg) to surface water is one of the dominant sources of Hg in aquatic environments and ultimately drives methylmercury (MeHg) toxin accumulation in fish. It is known that freshly deposited Hg is more readily methylated by microorganisms than aged or preexisting Hg; however the underlying mechanism of this process is unclear. We report that Hg bioavailability is decreased by photochemical reactions between Hg and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. Photo-irradiation of Hg-DOM complexes results in loss of Sn(II)-reducible (i.e. reactive) Hg and up to an 80% decrease in MeHg production by the methylating bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA. Loss of reactive Hg proceeded at a faster rate with a decrease in the Hg to DOM ratio and is attributed to the possible formation of mercury sulfide (HgS). These results suggest a new pathway of abiotic photochemical formation of HgS in surface water and provide a mechanism whereby freshly deposited Hg is readily methylated but, over time, progressively becomes less available for microbial uptake and methylation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Plant-microbial fuel cell (PMFC) is a renewable and sustainable energy technology that generates electricity with living plants. However, little information is available regarding the application of PMFC for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated water or soil. In this study, the potential for the removal of heavy metal Cr(VI) using PMFC was evaluated, and the performance of the PMFC at various initial Cr(VI) contents was investigated. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency could reached 99% under various conditions. Both the Cr(VI) removal rates and the removal efficiencies increased with the increasing initial Cr(VI) concentration. Furthermore, the long-term operation of the PMFC indicated that the system was stable and sustainable for Cr(VI) removal. The mass balance results and XPS analysis results demonstrate that only a small amount of soluble Cr(III) remained in the PMFC and that most Cr(III) precipitated in the form of the Cr(OH)3(s) or was adsorbed onto the electrodes. The PMFC experiments of without acetate addition also show that plants can provide carbon source for MFC through secrete root exudates and bioelectrochemical reduction of Cr(VI) was the main mechanism for the Cr(VI) removal. These results extend the application fields of PMFC and might provide a new insight for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater or soil.

A novel energy-saving anaerobic hybrid membrane bioreactor (AnHMBR) with mesh filter, which takes advantage of anaerobic membrane bioreactor and fixed-bed biofilm reactor, is developed for low-strength 2-chlorophenol (2-CP)-contained wastewater treatment. In this system, the anaerobic membrane bioreactor is stuffed with granular activated carbon to construct an anaerobic hybrid fixed-bed biofilm membrane bioreactor. The effluent turbidity from the AnHMBR system was low during most of the operation period, and the chemical oxygen demand and 2-CP removal efficiencies averaged 82.3% and 92.6%, respectively. Furthermore, a low membrane fouling rate was achieved during the operation. During the AnHMBR operation, the only energy consumption was for feed pump. And a low energy demand of 0.0045-0.0063kWhm(-3) was estimated under the current operation conditions. The surface interaction between heavy metals and natural organic matters (NOM) substantially affects their migration and conversion in natural environments. In this study, the chemical speciation and element mapping of Fe and Mn in reduced NOM were investigated. The results show that quinone and semiquinone moieties dominated the redox properties in NOM, and the EPR signal intensity exhibited pH dependence with an increase of EPR signal intensity at a higher pH value. The EPR results indicate that the complexes displayed the characteristics of superparamagnetic oxides/oxyhydroxides after Fe/Mn complexed with NOM. μ-XRF results suggest that the scatterplots of Fe and Mn distributions at pH 11 had the most positive linearly-related plot points, indicating strong correlations for Mn-Fe binary metallic ions. μ-XANES results further interpret the presence of higher Mn oxidation state at pH 11, while Fe kept trivalent in all samples. These results reveal that the surface interactions are closely related to the redox state of NOM and are beneficial for better understanding the speciation, immobilization, transport, and toxicity of metal ions in natural waters.

A chemical modified biochar with abundant amino groups for heavy metal removal was prepared using polyethylenimine (PEI) as a modification reagent, and used as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The biochars before and after modification were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etc. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by the modified biochar was obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Its maximum adsorption capacity was 435.7 mg/g, which was much higher than that of pristine biochar (23.09 mg/g). Results also indicated that the removal of Cr(VI) by the PEI modified biochar depended on solution pH, and a low pH value was favorable for the Cr(VI) removal. The occurrences, transformation of antibiotics in biological wastewater treatment plants have attracted increasing interests. However, roles of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of activated sludge on the fate of antibiotics are not clear. In this study, the roles of EPS in the migration and removal of one typical antibiotic, sulfamethazine (SMZ), in activated sludge process were investigated. The interaction between EPS and SMZ was explored through a combined use of fluorescence spectral analysis, laser light scattering and microcalorimetry techniques. Results show that SMZ interacted with the proteins in EPS mainly with a binding constant of 1.91 × 10(5) L/mol. The binding process proceeded spontaneously, and the driving force was mainly from the hydrophobic interaction. After binding, the structure of EPS was expanded and became loose, which favored the mass transfer and pollution capture. The removal of SMZ was influenced by interaction with EPS. SMZ could be effectively adsorbed on EPS, which accounted for up to 61.8% of total SMZ adsorbed by sludge at the initial adsorption stage and declined to around 35.3% at the subsequent biodegradation stage. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals and are listed as priority pollutants by the US EPA. Although they are sparsely soluble in water, their solubility can be increased by binding to dissolved organic matter in natural waters, which will further increase their environmental risk as toxic pollutants. In this study, the interaction between PAHs, exemplified by fluorene and anthracene, and fulvic acid (FA) was studied using fluorescence quenching titration method with fluorescence emission spectra, respectively. The association of FA with the mixture of fluorene and anthracene was also evaluated by excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectrometry combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. Results demonstrate that EEM fluorescence spectrometry with PARAFAC analysis was sensitive and reliable to determine the binding properties of PAHs with FA in a mixed aqueous solution. The conditional stability constants and binding capacities show that both PAHs bind to FA tightly.

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (CHCs) are toxic and carcinogenic contaminants commonly found in environmental samples, and efficient online detection of these contaminants is still challenging at the present stage. Here, we report an advanced Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) sensor for in-situ and simultaneous detection of multiple CHCs, including monochlorobenzene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, and chloroform. The polycrystalline silver halide sensor fiber had a unique integrated planar-cylindric geometry, and was coated with an ethylene/propylene copolymer membrane to act as a solid phase extractor, which greatly amplified the analytical signal and contributed to a higher detection sensitivity compared to the previously reported sensors. This system exhibited a high detection sensitivity towards the CHCs mixture at a wide concentration range of 5~700 ppb. The FTIR-ATR sensor described in this study has a high potential to be utilized as a trace-sensitive on-line device for water contamination monitoring.

The electro-Fenton process is efficient for degradation of organic pollutants, but it suffers from the high operating costs due to the need of power investment. Here, a new anodic Fenton system is developed for energy-saving and efficient treatment of organic pollutants by incorporating microbial fuel cell (MFC) into an anodic Fenton process. This system is composed of an anodic Fenton reactor and a two-chamber air-cathode MFC. The power generated from a two-chamber MFC is used to drive the anodic Fenton process for Acid Orange 7 (AO7) degradation through accelerating in situ generation of Fe(2+) from sacrificial iron. The kinetic results show that the MFC-assisted anodic Fenton process system had a significantly higher pseudo-first-order rate constant than those for the chemical Fenton methods. The electrochemical analysis reveals that AO7 did not hinder the corrosion of iron. The anodic Fenton process was influenced by the MFC performance. It was also found that increasing dissolved oxygen in the cathode improved the MFC power density, which in turn enhanced the AO7 degradation rate. These clearly demonstrate that the anodic Fenton process could be integrated with MFC to develop a self-sustained system for cost-effective and energy-saving electrochemical wastewater treatment., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Contact-Adsorption-Regeneration (CAR) process is a cost-effective system for wastewater treatment and has a potential for application in less-developed regions. To offer a better understanding of this process, a mathematical model was established on the basis of Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) and by incorporating the adsorption and different hydrolysis processes. The model predictions were compared with the measured data in terms of effluent concentrations and removals of both chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH(4)(+)-N. A good agreement between the predicted and measured data was observed, indicating that the model was capable of predicting the rapid adsorption, COD removal and nitrification processes in the CAR system. Photocatalytic oxidation mediated by TiO(2) is a promising oxidation process for degradation of organic pollutants, but suffers from the decreased photocatalytic efficiency attributed to the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, a cost-effective supply of external electrons is an effective way to elevate the photocatalytic efficiency. Here we report a novel bioelectrochemical system to effectively reduce p-nitrophenol as a model organic pollutant with utilization of the energy derived from a microbial fuel cell. In such a system, there is a synergetic effect between the electrochemical and photocatalytic oxidation processes. Kinetic analysis shows that the system exhibits a more rapid p-nitrophenol degradation at a rate two times the sum of rates by the individual photocatalytic and electrochemical methods. The system performance is influenced by both external resistor and electrolyte concentration. Either a lower external resistor or a lower electrolyte concentration results in a higher p-nitrophenol degradation rate. This system has a potential for the effective degradation of refractory organic pollutants and provides a new way for utilization of the energy generated from conversion of organic wastes by microbial fuel cells.

In this work, pulp mill wastewater was treated using a novel copolymer flocculant with a high water-solubility, which was synthesized through grafting (2-methacryloyloxyethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) onto chitosan initiated by potassium persulphate. The experimental results demonstrate that the two main problems associated with the utilization of chitosan as a flocculant, i.e., low molecular weight and low water-solubility, were concurrently sorted out. The physicochemical properties of this flocculant were characterized with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Reaction parameters influencing the grafting percentage, such as temperature, reaction time, initiator concentration and monomer concentration, were optimized using an orthogonal array design matrix. With an increase in grafting percentage, the water-solubility of the flocculant was improved, and it became thoroughly soluble in water when the grafting percentage reached 236.4% or higher. Its application for the treatment of pulp mill wastewater indicates that it had an excellent flocculation capacity and that its flocculation efficiency was much better than that of polyacrylamide. The optimal conditions for the flocculation treatment of pulp mill wastewater were also obtained.

Ipomoea aquatica with low-energy N+ ion implantation was used for the removal of both nitrogen and phosphorus from the eutrophic Chaohu Lake, China. The biomass growth, nitrate reductase and peroxidase activities of the implanted I. aquatica were found to be higher than those of I. aquatica without ion implantation. Higher NO3-N and PO4-P removal efficiencies were obtained for the I. aquatica irradiation at 25 keV, 3.9 x 10(16) N+ ions/cm(2) and 20 keV 5.2 x 10(16) N+ ions/cm(2), respectively (p < 0.05). Moreover, the nitrogen and phosphorus contents in the plant biomass with ion implantation were also greater than those of the controls. I. aquatica with ion implantation was directly responsible for 51-68% N removal and 54-71% P removal in the three experiments. The results further confirm that the ion implantation could enhance the growth potential of I. aquatica in real eutrophic water and increase its nutrient removal efficiency. Thus, the low-energy ion implantation for aquatic plants could be considered as an approach for in situ phytoremediation and bioremediation of eutrophic waters.

A hydrogen-producing photosynthetic bacteria strain, Rhodopseudomonas acidophila, was used to investigate the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the presence of toxic substances and the effect of toxicants on bacterial surface characteristics. Addition of the toxic substances including Cu(II), Cr(VI), Cd(II) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) stimulated the production of EPS but reduced the cell dry weight. At concentrations of 30 mg l(-1) Cu(II), 40 mg l(-1) Cr(VI), 5 mg l(-1) Cd(II) and 100 mg l(-1) 2,4-DCP, the EPS content increased by 5.5, 2.5, 4.0 and 1.4 times, respectively, than the control. These toxic substances also greatly influenced the proteins/carbohydrates ratio of EPS. The ratios in the presence of toxic substances were always higher than that of control. Furthermore, under toxic conditions, the increase in the protein content far exceeded than that of others in EPS, suggesting that extracellular proteins could protect cells against toxic substances. The toxic substances significantly changed the surface characteristics and flocculation ability of R. acidophila, such as surface energy, relative hydrophobicity and free energy of adhesion.
