The aims of this paper were to describe seasonal changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of diatom taxa and the potential application of benthic diatoms for ecological status evaluation. Diatom indices (IPS and TI) were calculated from data from three different locations along a longitudinal profile of the Bunica, a small karstic river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 147 taxa were recorded in 12 samples. The most common taxa were Meridion circulare (Greville) C.Agardh and Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère. Physical and chemical analyses showed low concentrations of nutrients, good oxygenation, typical pH for carbonate bed/origin and generally oligotrophic conditions and high ecological status. All sites had similar physico-chemical conditions and there were only few seasonal differences. Ordination of the diatom data showed that samples showed neither longitudinal nor seasonal patterns. Median value for IPS (16.8) and for TI (7.3) can be possible "expected" values for ecological status assessment for small karstic rivers in the Mediterranean region. We propose the use of the phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric (pICM - an index that combines the IPS and TI) as a national metric for countries developing WFD diatom methods at a late stage. One situation is described, and a solution, which is potentially transferable to other locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and also to other countries facing similar challenges. In this paper, we report new records of rare diatoms that have recently been found in Southern Poland. Planothidium nanum was found only in the upper reaches of the Centuria River, which is not exposed to human influence, while Navicula flandriae was found in two rivers (the Bolina and the Mleczna) affected by salt mine water from hard coal mines. The impact of anthropogenic salinity on diatom communities is as yet poorly documented. Therefore, we conducted a survey on this phenomenon. We surveyed seven sampling sites for diatom assemblages and habitat characteristics, including three sampling sites impacted by mine water. Navicula flandriae was recorded at both sampling sites affected by salt mine water and in two other rivers (the Centuria and the Mitręga), indicating its wide preference for salinity. We confirmed the occurrence of P. nanum at the same site where this species was found and described in our previous paper. In addition, we recorded the occurrence of this species at two other sites in habitats with similar characteristics (lower reaches of the Centuria and Wiercica rivers). Our results indicate a more common occurrence of N. flandriae and P. nanum, which means that further monitoring of diatoms is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since 2000, after the Water Framework Directive came into force, aquatic ecosystems' bioassessment has acquired immense practical importance for water management. Currently, due to extensive scientific research and monitoring, we have gathered comprehensive hydrobiological databases. The amount of available data increases with each subsequent year of monitoring, and the efficient analysis of these data requires the use of proper mathematical tools. Our study challenges the comparison of the modelling potential between four indices for the ecological status assessment of lakes based on three groups of aquatic organisms, i.e. phytoplankton, phytobenthos and macrophytes. One of the deep learning techniques, artificial neural networks, has been used to predict values of four biological indices based on the limited set of the physicochemical parameters of water. All analyses were conducted separately for lakes with various stratification regimes as they function differently. The best modelling quality in terms of high values of coefficients of determination and low values of the normalised root mean square error was obtained for chlorophyll a followed by phytoplankton multimetric. A lower degree of fit was obtained in the networks for macrophyte index, and the poorest model quality was obtained for phytobenthos index. For all indices, modelling quality for non-stratified lakes was higher than this for stratified lakes, giving a higher percentage of variance explained by the networks and lower values of errors. Sensitivity analysis showed that among physicochemical parameters, water transparency (Secchi disk reading) exhibits the strongest relationship with the ecological status of lakes derived by phytoplankton and macrophytes. At the same time, all input variables indicated a negligible impact on phytobenthos index. Two methods of quantifying diatoms were compared: (i) by counting valves, and (ii) by simple assignment of individual species to a seven-point scale according to their coverage on a glass slide. The saprobity-trophic index introduced in the Czech Republic for assessing the ecological status of running waters in accordance with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) was used for comparison. There were no statistically significant differences between the indices as calculated by the studied methods, and therefore the comparable indicative values of the two approaches were demonstrated. In all cases, however, indices based on coverage classes achieved higher correlation with the fundamental water chemistry parameters than did indices based on diatom valve counts. To explain the cause of higher correlations, different variants of editing input data were used. The results support the assumption that the main cause of the poorer predictive value for the index based on diatom valve counts is that the abundant taxa are attributed too much importance in the final assessment of the environment quality. Using degrees of coverage for the quantification of diatoms in evaluating the ecological status thus appears to be preferable (or at least sufficient) for the given purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The composition and diversity of different water bodies in Kaaba/Bunu Local Government, Kogi State were investigated for both micro and macrobiota. The study covered Oinyi, Odogo and Odonkolo Rivers. Salinity values ranged between 0.03‰ and 0.07‰ indicating the freshwater status of these water bodies, pH was between 6.50 and 7.61. Conductivity values were between 88.1µS/cm and 131.7µS/cm while dissolved oxygen highest value (5.12mg/L) was recorded at Odonkolo River. For the phytobenthos, eighty-five taxa recorded were distributed among five divisions, Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Charophyta, Euglenophyta and Cyanobacteria. Bacillariophyta (Diatoms) accounted for 78.28% of the identified species, followed by the Charophytes, (6.99%), Chlorophytes (5.61%), Euglenophytes (7.43%) and Cyanobacteria (1.69%). Benthic diatoms inhabiting littoral zones are regarded as promising bioindicators in lakes. Some pre-standard protocols were proposed and suggested to collect a single site per lake to assess its overall quality. In large lakes, such as Lake Geneva, a spatial heterogeneity of diatom assemblages was suspected, because of differing human pressures. Thirty-five sites were sampled along the shoreline in locations showing various population densities and crossed by rivers flowing into the lake. Different assemblages were found; one corresponded to more oligotrophic areas and was mostly situated on the shoreline next to low population densities; it was mostly composed of low-profile diatoms. A second one corresponded to more eutrophic areas and was mostly situated near densely inhabited areas; it was composed of many high-profile diatoms. A third one was in close vicinity to river inlets, with high abundances of motile diatoms. This last assemblage was spatially restricted to the river plume. After testing several diatom indices, one showed better capacities to assess nutrient level (EPI-L). If we avoid areas near river inlets, the ecological quality assessed with diatom indices ranged from moderate to high ecological status depending on the vicinity situated more or less near densely populated areas. The present paper aims to characterize the algal communities from Balta Mică a Brăilei Nature Park in terms of their species richness and their ability to reflect the water quality of the aquatic ecosystems they live in. Thirteen shallow floodplain lakes, both permanent and temporary, were considered for the present study, with 16 sampling occasions in 2012 and 2013. More than 300 algal taxa were identified, with the green algae (Chlorophyta) being the dominant phyla in almost all the sampling sites. The trophicity and the organic pollution reached high values in 2012, probably due to low water levels caused by drought. Investigation into benthic algae communities was carried out in the Lithuanian rivers of different water quality during the period 2004–2006. The structure of benthic algae communities in the rivers of different water quality slightly differs. The community of Cladophora glomerata–Vaucheria sessilis– Fontinalis antipyretica mainly dominated in the rivers. Algae communities reiterate in unpolluted rivers (II class, according to biogenes) such as Akmena, Babrungas, Bražuolė and Siesartis where Cladophora glomerata–Fontinalis antipyretica, Amblystegium riparium–Cladophora glomerata, and Fontinalis antipyretica–Cladophora glomerata communities predominate. In slightly and moderately polluted rivers, algae communities are unreiteratable. Differences in river water quality could be better determined by frequently appearing algae species in algae communities: in unpolluted rivers – Hildenbrandia rivularis, Audouinella chalybea and A. Hermanii, in slightly polluted – Vaucheria sessilis and Fontinalis antipyretica, and in moderately polluted – Stigeoclonium nanum, S. tenue, Aulacoseira islandica and Melosira varians. The variety of the structure of benthic algae communities could be determined by abiotic environmental factors such as the heterogenity of substratum, stream velocity and depth, the intensity of light and biogenes concentration. In 2009, seventeen analysts participated in a pan-European diatom ring-test (intercalibration), analyzing nine samples from seven countries following the European standard EN 14407. The objective of this exercise was to agree on practical conventions on diatom identification to facilitate future intercalibration work and to assess the extent to which national differences in sample analysis (counting protocol and identification conventions) contribute to variability in EU-level comparisons of diatom-based methods. Differences in the reported taxa lists were large, but not a major source of variation in values of a common metric (the phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric, ICM). Therefore, every country can apply its own identification conventions for national assessments, and still be fairly confident that the ICM reflects the national classification of its streams. Part of the index variation was due to differences in counting protocols and care should be taken when handling broken valves, girdle views and small taxa. Biological elements, including phytoplankton, phytobenthos, macrophytes, benthic invertebrates and fish, are employed by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC as ecological indicators for the assessment of surface waters. The use of primary producers (phytoplankton, phytobenthos and macrophytes) for water quality assessment has a long history, and several methods have been developed worldwide. In this study, we used these three communities to assess the ecological status of five natural lakes located in the Aquitaine region (southwest France). Several biological indices used in lakes from other European countries or in French rivers were employed and compared among the three communities. Each primary producer provided complementary information about the ecological status of the lakes, including the invasiveness of exotic taxa. Regardless of the producer community used, the response to the environment, as reflected by the indices (adequate for each community), was similar: Lakes Cazaux, Lacanau and Hourtin showed the best ecological status and Parentis and Soustons the worst. Phytoplankton diagnosis reflected and integrated unambiguously the water quality of the lakes, as demonstrated by the strong relationships between the phytoplankton index and the trophic status criteria. This community appeared as the best indicator, especially when macrophytes were absent. The methods applied here represent a potential tool for the assessment of the ecological status in the context of WFD, but they need to be refined. We propose modifications for phytobenthos index initially tailored for running waters for adequate use in lentic ecosystems. Eutrophication is one of the major problems for surface water quality in Norway, particularly in the lowlands near settlements and agricultural areas. Here, we present a new index based on non-diatomaceous benthic algae (Periphyton index of trophic status, PIT) which is developed on a dataset of >500 samples from >350 sites from the Norwegian mainland and can be used to describe trophic status at a river site. PIT indicator values for benthic algae taxa are derived from water total phosphorus concentrations and range from 1.87 for Stigonema hormoides to 68.91 for Tribonema sp. PIT site values range from 3.42 to 44.45 and cover a range from oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. The relationship between the PIT and the total phosphorus concentration has one major threshold at 10 μg/l TP, with a slow increase below and a steep increase above 10 μg/l. We conclude that benthic algae species composition at nutrient poor sites reacts only slightly to small increases in phosphorus concentration, while it is most sensible to eutrophication in the range between 10 and 30 μg TP/l. For the genus Oedogonium, we found a significant positive correlation between filament width and TP concentration, making Oedogonium an easy to use eutrophication indicator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative inference models for water-chemistry variables are derived from epiphytic diatom assemblages in 186 lentic and mostly shallow freshwaters in lower Belgium (Flanders). When the complete pH range is considered (pH 3.4–9.3), robust transfer functions are obtained for median pH (jack-knifed r2 = 0.88, RMSEP = 0.38 pH units or 6.4% of the observed range) and dissolved inorganic carbon concentration (jack-knifed r2 = 0.86, RMSEP = 0.194 log10 mg DIC l−1 or 10.2% of the observed range) by means of weighted-averaging partial least squares regression (WA-PLS). For these variables, the calibration models are as reliable as those based on sedimentary diatom assemblages. Inferences of pH may be improved by combining estimates from epiphytic and sediment assemblages. In circumneutral and alkaline conditions, WA-PLS calibration of maximum or median total phosphorus is possible (log-transformed; jack-knifed r2 = 0.64 or 0.66 and RMSEP = 14% or 12.3% of the observed range, respectively). It makes little difference if taxa showing no response to TP are taken into consideration or not. These models considerably expand the prospects of using historical herbarium materials to hindcast environmental conditions and also allow more accurate interpretation of current compositional changes in epiphytic communities. Compared to littoral sediment assemblages, fewer water-column variables can be inferred reliably from epiphyton. This probably results from differences between the effective gradients in both habitats, together with lower in situ species diversity and less effective spatial integration (i.e. lower recruitment of phytoplankton) in the epiphyton. A comparison of the HOF response-model types and WA-optima of diatom taxa for epiphytic and sediment assemblages shows that the relationship to individual variables, and in particular to those related to trophic status, may differ with habitat. Relationships between littoral surface-sediment diatom assemblages and ambient limnological conditions were examined in 186 lentic fresh waters throughout lower Belgium (Flanders). Most of these waters were small, unstratified, alkaline and rich in nutrients. Using weighted-averaging techniques, robust and accurate transfer functions were developed for median pH-values ranging from 3.4 to 9.3 and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations from <1.6 to 63 mg l−1 (jackknifed r2≈ 0.87, RMSEP <10% of the observed range), while a less precise model was obtained for sodium (2–571 mg l−1; jackknifed r2 0.69, RMSEP 9.9% of the range). Restricting the data set to circumneutral and alkaline sites (pH≥6.5) revealed the importance of additional variables, including calcium, silica, chemical oxygen demand and potential gross oxygen production (a proxy for metabolic activity and phytoplankton abundance). Calibration models for these variables were strong enough to be useful (jackknifed r2 0.57–0.59, RMSEP 13.1–16.4% of the observed range), although estimations should not always be considered entirely independent. Except for the predominant pH gradient, removal of all taxa with a distribution unrelated to the variable of interest improved model performance. In general, such taxa were proportionally represented among taxa classified according to their principal habitat. Application of the present models to diatom assemblages of shallow-water sediments obtained from historical samples and, most importantly, herbarium-macrophyte specimens, will improve hindsight into regional freshwater conditions and add to base-line setting of ecological quality standards in a highly impacted region. Abundance-weighted averages of diatom indicator values for pH, salinity, organic nitrogen availability, oxygen saturation, saprobity and trophic status according to van Dam et al. [Neth. J. Aquat. Ecol. 28 (1994) 117] were calculated for surface sediment and epiphytic diatom assemblages in 186 standing waters distributed throughout Flanders, Belgium, and tested against environmental variables measured in the water column, covering water chemistry, trophic status and organic load. With exception of the pH indication, most scores related rather poorly to variables which they are assumed to reflect and correlated even more strongly to non-target variables. For instance, the trophic indication provided a measure of pH and base status rather than of nutrient levels or phytoplankton productivity. Relations to measured variables differed according to the pH regime. Correction for uneven distribution of indicator values in the species pool usually yielded little improvement and was detrimental in some cases. Compared to epiphyton, weighted averages of species indicator values derived from sediment assemblages tended to be higher in water bodies yielding the most elevated indication scores. Except for the pH and salinity indication, differences between weighted averages pertaining to these different habitats were often considerable. Limitations to the use of abundance-weighted averages of diatom indicator values for environmental monitoring and assessment of lentic waters are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) has been implemented over the past 20 years, using physicochemical, biological and hydromorphological elements to assess the ecological status of surface waters. Benthic diatoms (i.e., phytobenthos) are one of the most common biological quality elements (BQEs) used in surface water monitoring and are particularly successful in detecting eutrophication, organic pollution and acidification. Herein, we reviewed their implementation in river biomonitoring for the purposes of the WFD, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages over other BQEs, and we discuss recent advances that could be applied in future biomonitoring. Until now, phytobenthos have been intercalibrated by the vast majority (26 out of 28) of EU Member States (MS) in 54% of the total water bodies assessed and was the most commonly used BQE after benthic invertebrates (85% of water bodies), followed by fish (53%), macrophytes (27%) and phytoplankton (4%). To meet the WFD demands, numerous taxonomy-based quality indices have been developed among MS, presenting, however, uncertainties possibly related to species biogeography. Recent development of different types of quality indices (trait-based, DNA sequencing and predictive modeling) could provide more accurate results in biomonitoring, but should be validated and intercalibrated among MS before their wide application in water quality assessments.
