Although chalk aquifers are not too often associated with conduit flow, they are highly productive groundwater systems and, like limestone aquifers, they can be vulnerable to contamination when exposed to land use activities. The Danish carbonate rocks are generally recognized to be highly fractured and covered by thick Quaternary sediments. Fissure flow is pronounced, occurring in the upper 50–100 m due to Pleistocene glaciations. According to recently published maps of the distribution of karst in Europe, Denmark has no karst. However, this study concludes that karstified chalk and limestone aquifers are an important source of freshwater in Denmark. Four national datasets on karst features, groundwater flow, groundwater chemistry, and fish ecological quality ratio (EQR) data now indicate more heterogeneous structures and preferential flow pathways in the chalk and limestone aquifers than had been conceptualized and modelled with a national water resources groundwater/surface-water model in the recent past. This study provides new qualitative evidence that rapid and preferential flow of water and agrochemicals from the surface through thinner parts of the Quaternary cover layers, sinkholes and solution-enlarged fractures may likely impact the vulnerability of chalk and limestone aquifers. Additionally, due to the preferential flow system, some gaining streams discharged by karstified chalk and limestone aquifers show increased fish EQR values when using observed river daily discharge data instead of simulated daily discharge.

Understanding the role of geological heterogeneity on the performance of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) in terms of effective groundwater storage is crucial to design MAR systems. Natural aquifers are affected by a variety of geologic strata and structures at different scales, which are responsible for wide ranging hydraulic properties. This study combines physical experiments and numerical modeling to investigate the effect of geologic structures commonly encountered in sedimentary environments, on MAR-induced groundwater flow patterns using injection wells. Models were conceptualized and parametrized based on the hydrogeological conditions of Tailan River basin in arid NW China, which hosts a typical, structurally complex, alluvial-fan aquifer system affected by sediment layering, clay lenses and anticline barriers, and is extensively studied for the strategic potential of MAR in addressing water shortages in the region. Results showed that, compared to a homogeneous scenario, high-permeability aquifer layers shortened groundwater ages, decreased the thickness of the artificially recharged water lenses (ARWLs), and shifted the stagnation points downstream. Clay lenses increased groundwater residence times but had little effect on spatial flow patterns due to their elongation parallel-to-flow direction. Overall groundwater ages, as well as the thickness of ARWLs created through injection on the upstream side of an anticline, increased, and this to a larger extent than through injection on the downstream side, which did not increase significantly compared to the homogeneous scenario. Results provide insights for MAR optimization in naturally heterogeneous aquifer systems, along with a benchmark tool for application to a wide range of typical geological conditions.

Surface water and groundwater (SW-GW) are an inseparable whole, having a tightly coupled hydraulic relationship and frequent inter-transformation. As such, the quantitative calculation of water exchange between SW-GW is a difficult challenge. To address this issue, we propose the use of a physically based and distributed hydrological model, called WEP-L, in order to analyze the effects of the SW-GW interaction and its spatiotemporal variation characteristics in the Xiaoqing River basin. We demonstrate that the SW-GW interaction is significantly affected by season. The simulated annual average exchange volume of SW-GW above the control section of Huangtaiqiao Station from 1980 to 2020 is found to be 54.79 m3/s. The exchange volumes of SW-GW in the wet and dry season are 28.69 m3/s and 13.46 m3/s, respectively, accounting for 48.75% and 22.87% of the whole year. In addition, considering two types of climate change scenarios, the exchange capacity of SW-GW increases by 0.42m3/s when the rainfall increases by 5%, while the exchange capacity decreases by only 0.2 m3/s when the temperature increases by 0.2 °C. This study provides insights for the quantification of the SW-GW interaction at the regional scale, which will benefit our understanding of the water cycle and evolution of water resources in Xiaoqing River basin.

Studying the spatial distribution characteristics of groundwater quality in the coastal plain and its relationship with land use and seawater intrusion is of great significance for maintaining the stability of the coastal groundwater environment, rationally using land and preventing seawater intrusion in international community. Taking Longkou, Shandong Province as an example, through field surveys and sampling monitoring, and using methods, such as semi-variogram and Kriging interpolation, the spatial distribution characteristics of groundwater quality in the study area and the coupling relationship with land use and seawater intrusion were analyzed. The results show that the main chemical types of groundwater in Longkou are the HCO3·Cl–Na·Ca·Mg and HCO3·Cl–Na·Ca types. Spatial distribution characteristics of groundwater quality are closely related to land use and seawater intrusion, and the mass concentration of most ions gradually decreases from the coast to the inland. The spatial variability of Cl− and Na+ is greatly affected by seawater intrusion. The spatial distribution of NO3− is closely related to the distribution of agricultural land and residential land. We should constantly monitor the scope of seawater intrusion and the total amount of sewage discharged from agriculture and domestic life to effectively prevent the further deterioration of coastal groundwater quality.

Affected by excessive fertilizer application and livestock breeding, the problem of nitrate pollution in the groundwater in the Mihe alluvial–diluvial fan area is becoming increasingly prominent, which poses a great threat to human production and life. Given this, the risk of nitrate pollution in the shallow groundwater of the Mihe alluvial–diluvial fan is evaluated by introducing a data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. Using this model, 28 groundwater sampling points are selected as the decision-making unit (DMU); the nitrogen and pesticide application rate, livestock and poultry stock, groundwater burial depth, aquifer water abundance, and vegetable planting area are taken as the model input; and the nitrate content is taken as the model output to quantitatively calculate the pollution risk index to form a spatial distribution map of pollution risk. The calculation using the model shows that the average pollution risk index of the study area is 0.382, the spatial variation is 1.12, the pollution risk index gradually decreases from south to north, and agricultural planting and livestock and poultry breeding are the main pollution sources. The calculation of nitrate pollution risk using this model not only enriches the nitrate pollution evaluation model but also provides a basis for further implementing the action of reducing fertilizer use by increasing its efficiency and strengthening the prevention of agricultural diffused pollution.

Groundwater in a shallow aquifer used for potable supply in Qingdao, China, has been contaminated by nitrate by the excessive use of chemical fertilisers for vegetable production in the area. In this study, a representative site was selected to construct a non-continuous permeable reactive barrier (PRB) back-filled with a mixed reactive medium containing of zero-valent iron, activated carbon and medium- to coarse-grained sand. The PRB consists of alternate well and pillars and was constructed to provide a funnel and gate treatment system for two pumping wells. Groundwater monitoring during a trial of the system indicated that the concentrations of nitrate in monitoring wells within the treatment system rapidly declined (within a day) from about 120 mg/L to 20 mg/L. Reductions in nitrate concentrations were also observed in the pumping wells and downgradient monitoring wells, but changes in nitrate concentrations were moderated by mixing with contaminated groundwater. The PRB construction technique of using alternative wells and pillars combined with jet grouting was found to be effective for nitrate removal from groundwater at a small scale.

Karst aquifers produce the world&rsquo, s largest springs and supply the water resources to about a quarter of the global population while being influenced by high-intensity human activities. Knowledge about spring discharge hydrographs driven by the effects of artificial regulation is essential to develop practical strategies for the management of karst groundwater. Based on hydrogeological conditions of the karst aquifer in Jinan, a two-dimensional laboratory tank was constructed, and a corresponding numerical simulation model was developed to explore how artificial regulation drives spring hydrographs in northern China. The results showed that the spring hydrographs were significantly changed under the effects of artificial regulation. The recession coefficient increased with pumping and decreased with increasing injection rates. The late sub-recession of spring discharge did not obey the exponential recession under the influence of injection. Pumping and injection in conduit zones showed more obvious effects on the recession coefficient in the late sub-recession curves. Groundwater exchange between conduits and fissure zones differed totally for different artificial regulation modes. With continuing rainfall, the flow fields were gradually controlled by rainfall. There was a time lag in the flow fields caused by rainfall. Under the stress of exploitation at different positions, stagnation points appeared at different locations in fissure zones, and locations of stagnation points were highly dependent on the positions of pumping wells. These findings are essential for better management of karst groundwater and karst spring protection.

The Jinan Karst Spring System in Shandong province, China, has suffered to maintain groundwater level and spring flowing for decades. Recharge of river water to karst aquifer in Jinan is important for the outflowing of four large karst springs in the city center. Field investigations were conducted for two times in May and October, 2015, respectively and water samples were collected for hydrogeochemical and isotopic measurements. Results showed that (a) the water type was predominantly Ca-HCO3-SO4 for karst groundwater, and Ca-Mg-SO4 for river water, (b) the concentration of HCO3&minus, and NO3&minus, in karst groundwater were higher than that in river water, in contrast, the concentration of SO42&minus, and K+ in karst groundwater were lower than that in river water, (c) the &delta, 2H and &delta, 18O values with average of &minus, 51.2&permil, and &minus, 6.6&permil, for river water is more enriched than the values in groundwater samples (&minus, 59.1&permil, 8.3&permil, ), in that river experienced evaporation in the upstream reservoir, (d) Based on the distribution pattern of &delta, 18O, groundwater near river bank was found to be recharged from river water and found a preferential flow path in karst aquifer situated from Dongkema to Manzizhuang near the river bank. This study provides useful information for understanding of the hydraulic connection between river water and karst aquifer, and benefit the protection and management of water resources.

Springs are the natural discharge points of groundwater. They are of considerable value for drinking water supply and some springs are of historical and tourism value. However, increasing industrial and urban expansion has led to serious problems of overdraft of groundwater resources, which in turn had caused the disappearance of springs globally. Thus, the protection of springs while at the same time allowing for the use of local groundwater resources is an important task of water resources management. In this study, we propose a new multi-objective simulation and optimization (S/O) model to find an optimal extraction strategy which balances the competitive relationship between spring outflow and groundwater extraction. In the newly developed model, the extraction rates of different groundwater wells are taken as the decision variables, and maximization of groundwater extraction and maximization of spring outflow are taken as the two objective functions. Baotu Spring which is located in northern China has been famous since the Shang Dynasty (1600 BCE). However, Baotu Spring has been drying up since the 1990s due to over extraction of the local groundwater. Thus, we take Baotu Spring as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the newly developed model. Simultaneously, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA), the multi-objective fast harmony search algorithm (MOFHS) which is coupled with the commonly used groundwater flow code MODFLOW, is adopted to search the Pareto optimal solutions (the optimal extraction strategies). The optimization results of Baotu Spring field during the management period from July 2013 to June 2014 show that more groundwater resources could be extracted without threatening the sustainable outflow of Baotu Spring and Black Tiger Spring. The optimization results for different hydrological years show that climate variability (mainly in precipitation) is an important factor when choosing the optimal extraction strategy. The optimization results of Baotu Spring in northern China show that the newly developed model is a promising tool to find the optimal groundwater extraction strategies which can protect springs while maximizing the extraction of groundwater resources in a spring field.

The Jinan karst spring system, discharged by 108 springs in 2.6 km2 city center area of Jinan, China, has been suffering lower regional groundwater levels, which threatens the karst springs outflowing and aquatic ecological civilization. For better spring protection, monthly hydrogeochemical and isotopic investigations were conducted in four representative karst springs (Baotu Spring (BTQ), Heihu Spring (HHQ), Zhenzhu (ZZQ), and Wulongtan Springs (WLT)) in 2016. Results showed that the BTQ, WLT, and ZZQ had similar hydrogeochemical and isotopic behaviors, which were different with that of HHQ. By combining the daily water level data with monthly hydrogeochemical and isotopic data of BTQ and HHQ, the hydrogeological processes of the two neighboring karst springs (470 m apart) are distinguished. (a) BTQ is recharged by two sources of precipitation and river water, while HHQ is recharged mainly by precipitation. (b) Hydrogeochemical characteristics of Baotu Spring are mainly controlled by calcite, dolomite, and gypsum dissolution mixture with river water and agricultural activity, while the hydrogeochemical characteristics of Heihu Spring are mainly controlled by calcite, dolomite, and gypsum dissolution in dry season, and dilution in wet season. (c) The discharge component of both springs is storage water by diffuse flow which is pressured by new infiltration rain water. The ratio of rain water is 14% in Baotu Spring and 9% in Heihu Spring calculated by a binary mixture model. Overall, this study puts forward the standpoint that neighboring karst springs with the same geological condition, can show different hydrogeological characteristics, which is a useful evidence for understanding the heterogeneity/complexity of karst aquifers.

Jinan Springs are an important historical heritage in China and have been well known for hundreds of years. Over-abstraction of groundwater in the Jinan area has seriously endangered the hydrological system of the springs, which have stopped flowing for significant periods of time in recent years. A three-dimensional finite-element model programmed primarily at the Hefei University of Technology has been developed to simulate groundwater level change in the large fractured-karst aquifer system in the Jinan Springs field. Various spring protection plans have been explored and their effects on the water table analyzed and compared. It was found that the present rate of groundwater withdrawal from the fractured-karst system in this area was inappropriate for spring protection. The simulated results suggest that decreasing the rate of groundwater pumping from 6.9×105 to 2.7×105 m3/day is needed to protect spring flows. Additional water resource requirements in that area may be met by use of surface water and recycled waste water.
