As international efforts to address climate change grow, an increasing number of countries and companies have put forward a clear “net zero” goal through accelerated renewable-energy development. As a renewable energy source, offshore wind energy has received particular attention from many countries and is a highly active research area. However, the design of offshore wind turbine structures faces challenges due to the large and complex design parameter space as well as different operational requirements and environmental conditions. Advanced optimization technology must be employed to address these challenges. Using an efficient optimization algorithm, it is possible to obtain optimized parameters for offshore wind turbine structures, balancing energy generation performance and the life of the floating wind turbine. This paper presents a review of the types and fundamental principles of several critical optimization technologies along with their application in the design process, with a focus on offshore wind turbine structures. It concludes with a discussion of the future prospects of optimization technology in offshore wind research.

The focus of this paper is to define anchorage management model for concession planning purposes to provide quality support to experts in spatial planning when developing maritime spatial plans. The research aim is to develop an anchorage management model that includes decision and concession support concept. Decision support concept is defined in order to support the processes of identifying potential anchorage locations, their evaluation and comparison, and finally, the priority ranking and selection of locations for their construction. The final step is modelling the concession support concept that includes financial analysis to concession parameters definition. The problem of decision making and concession of the anchorage location selection is complex and ill-structured because of the unsystematic and ad-hoc decisions by all included stakeholders. Additionally, the involvement of several stakeholders’ groups with different preferences and background knowledge, a large amount of conflicting and seemingly incomparable information and data, and numerous conflicting goals and criteria impact final decisions. The proposed concepts overcome the above obstacles in order to enable the construction of anchorages in a way of optimal use of maritime space. The model is tested on the island of Brač, Croatia. The methods used to solve the task are SWARA (The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis) for defining the criteria weights and ELECTRE (Elimination and Choice Expressing Reality) for ranking anchorage locations.

The sailing efficiency of an underwater glider, an important type of marine environment detection and data collection equipment, directly affects its range and duration. The zero-angle-of-attack gliding can be achieved by adjusting the wing installation angle to minimize the drag and improve the sailing efficiency, and thus further improving performance of the glider. This paper first presents the dynamic characteristics of a hybrid-driven underwater glider with a certain wing installation angle when it is sailing at zero angle of attack in buoyancy-driven mode and hybrid-driven mode. In buoyancy-driven mode, with a given wing installation angle, the glider can achieve zero-angle-of-attack gliding only at a specific glide angle. In hybrid-driven mode, due to the use of a propulsion system, the specific glide angle that allows the zero-angle-of-attack gliding in buoyancy-driven mode is expanded to a glide angle range bounded by zero degrees. Then, the energy consumption per meter is introduced as an indicator of sailing efficiency, and the effects of glide angle and wing installation angle on sailing efficiency of the zero-angle-of-attack glider in two driving modes are studied under the conditions of given net buoyancy and given speed, respectively. Accordingly, the optimal wing installation angle for maximizing the sailing efficiency is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the sailing efficiency of a zero-angle-of-attack glider can be higher than that of a traditional glider. Considering the requirements of different measurement tasks, a higher sailing efficiency can be achieved by setting reasonable parameters and selecting the appropriate driving mode.

Determining the influence of subduction input on back-arc basin magmatism is important for understanding material transfer and circulation in subduction zones. Although the mantle source of Okinawa Trough (OT) magmas is widely accepted to be modified by subducted components, the role of slab-derived fluids is poorly defined. Here, major element, trace element, and Li, O and Mg isotopic compositions of volcanic lavas from the middle OT (MOT) and southern OT (SOT) were analyzed. Compared with the MOT volcanic lavas, the T9-1 basaltic andesite from the SOT exhibited positive Pb anomalies, significantly lower Nd/Pb and Ce/Pb ratios, and higher Ba/La ratios, indicating that subducted sedimentary components affected SOT magma compositions. The δ7Li, δ18O, and δ26Mg values of the SOT basaltic andesite (−5.05‰ to 4.98‰, 4.83‰ to 5.80‰ and −0.16‰ to −0.09‰, respectively) differed from those of MOT volcanic lavas. Hence, the effect of the Philippine Sea Plate subduction component, (low δ7Li and δ18O and high δ26Mg) on magmas in the SOT was clearer than that in the MOT. This contrast likely appears because the amounts of fluids and/or melts derived from altered oceanic crust (AOC, lower δ18O) and/or subducted sediment (lower δ7Li, higher δ18O and δ26Mg) injected into magmas in the SOT are larger than those in the MOT and because the injection ratio between subducted AOC and sediment is always >1 in the OT. The distance between the subducting slab and overlying magma may play a significant role in controlling the differences in subduction components injected into magmas between the MOT and SOT.

There are many methods for crushing seabed rock such as a using a free-falling crusher, blasting, and chemical liquid expansion. Blasting and chemical liquid expansion can lead to environmental destruction, noise pollution, and civil complaints. Therefore, a free-falling crusher is generally recommended for use. Understanding the characteristics of a crusher in water and the impact force on the ground is helpful for designing a crusher and dredge work. In this study, drop tests of 50 and 70 ton crusher models that were scaled down by 15 times were investigated. The tests were conducted in a water basin by the Research Institute of Medium and Small Shipbuilding (RIMS) in Korea. Four water depths were considered with different falling locations: water surface and air. Moreover, a numerical study on Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis for a free-falling crusher was conducted by applying the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) element and the Grüneisen Equation of State (EoS) to fluid models. The crusher and ground were modeled as Lagrangian elements to estimate the impact force on the ground. Before comparing the crusher model, a free-falling sphere model was used to develop FSI technologies by comparing past Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental results. Moreover, the recommended mesh size and fluid domain for FSI analysis are provided to achieve good results via convergence tests. Comparison between experimental and numerical methods demonstrated a similar tendency such that impact force increased at a higher depth. Certain numerical results agree with average values of experimental results; however, multiple numerical cases exhibit a moderate difference. This is because of angular rotation between the crusher and ground when the crusher hits the ground during experiments.

This paper studied the resonant behaviors of a bottom-hinged oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) as well as the relationship of resonance with the response and capture width ratio (CWR). The time-domain dynamic equation of an OWSC in shallow water based on the boundary element method (BEM) was solved by a Python code, considering the corrected wave surface and the nonlinearities of restoring moment, drag, and friction. The unknown factors, such as wave surface corrected factor and drag coefficient, were effectively calibrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. An intermediate initial angle in free decay is appropriate for use to determine the natural period. Under regular waves, the resonance occurs near the natural period for the uniform wave amplitude, rather than the uniform wave torque amplitude, and can disappear due to the amplification of Power Take-Off (PTO) friction. Under unit-amplitude regular waves, the period of maximum CWR is relatively close to the period of maximum velocity, but far from the resonant period. Under irregular waves, no stable resonance is observed because the maximum equivalent pitch angle appears at different peak periods of wave spectra with the variation in PTO damping. When the period of a regular wave or the peak period of an irregular wave is close to the natural period, a phase hysteresis of velocity relative to wave torque always occurs.

Efficient vessel operation may reduce operational costs and increase profitability. This is in line with the direction pursued by many marine industry stakeholders such as vessel operators, regulatory authorities, and policymakers. It is also financially justifiable, as fuel oil consumption (FOC) maintenance costs are reduced by forecasting the energy consumption of electric propulsion vessels. Although recent technological advances demand technology for electric propulsion vessel electric power load forecasting, related studies are scarce. Moreover, previous studies that forecasted the loads excluded various factors related to electric propulsion vessels and failed to reflect the high variability of loads. Therefore, this study aims to examine the efficiency of various multialgorithms regarding methods of forecasting electric propulsion vessel energy consumption from various data sampling frequencies. For this purpose, there are numerous machine learning algorithm sets based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) combination methods. The methodology developed in this study is expected to be utilized in training the optimal energy consumption forecasting model, which will support tracking of degraded performance in vessels, optimize transportation, reflect emissions accurately, and be applied ultimately as a basis for route optimization purposes.

Near-inertial internal waves (NIWs) generated by surface wind forcing are intermittently enhanced below and within the surface mixed layer. The NIW kinetic energy below the surface mixed layer varies over intraseasonal, interannual, and decadal timescales; however, these variations remain unexplored, due to a lack of long-term, in situ observations. We present statistical results on the nonseasonal variability of the NIW kinetic energy 400 m below the surface mixed layer in the southwestern East Sea, using moored current measurements from 21 years. We used long time series of the near-inertial band (0.85–1.15 f) kinetic energy to define nine periods of relatively high (period high) and seven periods of relatively low (period low) NIW kinetic energy. The NIW kinetic energy average at period high was about 24 times higher than that at period low and those in specific years (2003, 2012–2013, 2016, and 2020) and decade (2010s) were significantly higher than those in other years and decade (2000s). Composite analysis revealed that negative relative vorticity and strong total strain significantly enhance NIW kinetic energy at 400 m. The relative vorticity was negative (total strain was positively enhanced) during seven (six) out of nine events of period high. NIW trapping in a region of negative relative vorticity and the wave capture process induce nonseasonal variations in NIW kinetic energy below the surface mixed layer. Our study reveals that, over intraseasonal, interannual, and decadal timescales, mesoscale flow fields significantly influence NIWs.

There is an increase in the utilization of the floating offshore structure (FOS) called Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoys and the attached marine hoses due to the increasing demand for oil and gas products. These hoses are flexible and easier to use but have a short service life of about 25 years. They are adaptable in ocean locations of shallow, intermediate and deep waters. In this research, a numerical model was developed using a coupling method modeled by utilizing ANSYS AQWA and Orcaflex (Orcina Ltd., Ulverston, UK) dynamic models of the CALM buoy hoses. Two cases were comparatively studied: Lazy-S and Chinese-lantern configurations, under ocean waves and current. Comparisons were also made between coupled and uncoupled models. This research presents the hydrodynamic characteristics with a sensitivity analysis on the influence of waves, current attack angle, soil gradient, soil stiffness and environmental conditions that influence the performance of marine hoses. The study comparatively looked at the configurations from dynamic amplification factors (DAF) on marine hoses. The results show that marine hoses can be easily configured to suit the designer’s need, seabed soil type, seabed topography and the profiles that are useful for manufacturers. The sensitivity analysis also shows the effect of hose parameters on its hydrodynamic behavior from the wave–current interaction (WCI).

Ship communication systems are defined in one part as GMDSS, while the other part consists of systems with secondary importance in safety communications. Each of these devices and systems makes an independent or separate system that works in a specific frequency range and is, at some level, connected to other communication systems. A step forward regarding frequency range and level of networking can be achieved with the application of a software-defined radio. This paper examines a variety of GMDSS communication equipment in terms of technical discrepancy and frequency range. Furthermore, the software-defined radio and SDR configuration development are described according to their theoretical feasibility in the maritime domain. The paper proposes the concept of SDR-based communication systems quite different from conventional maritime communication systems. This approach, conducted in phases, would in turn ease the upgrading, enable flexibility and inter-operation, prolong system life cycle and integrate different maritime communication systems and devices. The proposed concept aims to develop a centralized communication system to incorporate the ship’s communication devices into one common ship communication system.

The genus Vibrio currently contains 147 recognized species widely distributed, including pathogens for aquatic organisms. Vibrio infections in elasmobranchs are poorly reported, often with identifications as Vibrio sp. and without detailed diagnostic insights. The purpose of this paper is the description of the isolation and identification process of Vibrio spp. following a mortality event of Scyliorhinus canicula juvenile reared in an Italian public aquarium. Following investigations aimed at excluding the presence of different pathogens of marine fish species (parasites, bacteria, Betanodavirus), several colonies were isolated and subjected to species identification using the available diagnostic techniques (a biochemical test, MALDI-TOF MS, and biomolecular analysis). Discrepancies were observed among the methods; the limits of biochemistry as a unique tool for Vibrio species determination were detected through statistical analysis. The use of the rpoB gene, as a diagnostic tool, allowed the identification of the isolates as V. crassostreae and V. cyclotrophicus. Although the pathogenic role of these microorganisms in lesser-spotted dogfish juveniles has not been demonstrated, and the presence of further pathogens cannot be excluded, this study allowed the isolation of two Vibrio species in less-studied aquatic organisms, highlighting the weaknesses and strengths of the different diagnostic methods applied.

During the towing of semisubmersible platforms, waves impact and superpose in front of the platform to form a ridge shaped “water ridge”, which protrudes near the platform and produces a large slamming pressure. The water ridges occur frequently in the towing conditions of semisubmersible platforms. The wave–slamming on the braces and columns of platform is aggravated due to the water ridges, particularly in rough sea conditions. The effect of water ridges is usually ignored in slamming pressure analysis, which is used to check the structural strengths of the braces and columns. In this paper, the characteristics of the water ridge at the braces of a semisubmersible platform are studied by experimental tests and numerical simulations. In addition, the sensitivity of the water ridge to the wave height and period is studied. The numerical simulations are conducted by a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, and their accuracy is validated based on experimental tests. The characteristics of the water ridge and slamming pressure on the braces and columns are studied in different wave conditions based on the validated numerical model. It is found that the wave extrusion is the main reason of water ridge. The wave–slamming pressure caused by the water ridge has an approximately linear increase with the wave height and is sensitive to the wave period. With the increase of the wave period, the wave–slamming pressure on the brace and column of the platform increases first and then decreases. The maximum wave–slamming pressure is found when the wave period is 10 s and the slamming pressure reduces rapidly with an increase of wave period.

This paper presents the matching characteristics of impellers and guide vanes of high capacity and pressure seawater desalination pumps by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The single-stage pump is numerically calculated, and its external characteristics are consistent with the test results of model pump. Taking this scheme as a prototype, the research is carried out from three aspects: (i) the impeller blade outlet width; (ii) the number of impeller and guide vane blades; and (iii) the area ratio of impeller outlet to guide vane inlet. The results indicate that the blade outlet width significantly affects the pump head and efficiency. Appropriately increasing the number of guide vane blades or changing the number of impeller blades can improve efficiency and expand the high-efficiency area. Additionally, increasing the throat area of the guide vane has the opposite effect on the large flow and small flow area of the pump. An optimized hydraulic model design scheme is obtained.

Subsea high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) pipelines may be significantly affected by the effects of soil structure interaction (SSI) when subjected to earthquakes. Numerical simulations are herein applied to assess the role of soil deformability on the seismic vulnerability of an unburied pipeline. Overcoming most of the contributions existing in the literature, this paper proposes a comprehensive 3D model of the system (soil + pipeline) by performing OpenSees that allows the representation of non-linear mechanisms of the soil and may realistically assess the induced damage caused by the mutual interaction of buckling and seismic loads. Analytical fragility curves are herein derived to evaluate the role of soil structure interaction in the assessment of the vulnerability of a benchmark HP/HT unburied subsea pipeline. The probability of exceeding selected limit states was based on the definition of credited failure criteria.

The vortex in a pump sump is a negative problem for the pump unit, which can lead to the decline of pump performance. Focusing on the internal pressure characteristics of the floor-attached vortex (FAV) and its influence on the pump unit, the FAV was analyzed adopting the previously verified numerical simulation method and experiment. The results show that the pressure in the vortex core gradually decreases with time, drops to a negative pressure at the development stage, and then reaches the lowest pressure during the continuance stage. When the negative pressure of the vortex tube is around the vaporization pressure of the continuance stage, it can cause a local cavitation at the impeller inlet. The evolution of the FAV is accompanied by a change of pressure gradient in the vortex core which is discussed in detail. This research provides theoretical guidance for a better understanding of the vortex characteristics and the optimal design for the pump.

Multibeam echosounders (MBES) have become a valuable tool for underwater floor mapping. However, MBES data are often loaded with different measurement errors. This study presents a new user-friendly and methodological semi-automatic approach of point cloud post-processing error removal. The St. Anthony Channel (Croatia) was selected as the research area because it is regarded as one of the most demanding sea or river passages in the world and it is protected as a significant landscape by the Šibenik-Knin County. The two main objectives of this study, conducted within the Interreg Italy–Croatia PEPSEA project, were to: (a) propose a methodological framework that would enable the easier and user-friendly identification and removal of the errors in MBES data; (b) create a high-resolution integral model (MBES and UAV data) of the St. Anthony Channel for maritime safety and tourism promotion purposes. A hydrographic survey of the channel was carried out using WASSP S3 MBES while UAV photogrammetry was performed using Matrice 210 RTK V2. The proposed semi-automatic post-processing of the MBES acquired point cloud was completed in the Open Source CloudCompare software following five steps in which various point filtering methods were used. The reduction percentage in points after the denoising process was 14.11%. Our results provided: (a) a new user-friendly methodological framework for MBES point filtering; (b) a detailed bathymetric map of the St. Anthony Channel with a spatial resolution of 50 cm; and (c) the first integral (MBES and UAV) high-resolution model of the St. Anthony Channel. The generated models can primarily be used for maritime safety and tourism promotion purposes. In future research, ground-truthing methods (e.g., ROVs) will be used to validate the generated models.

The limit state function is important for the assessment of the longitudinal strength of damaged ships under combined bending moments in severe waves. As the limit state function cannot be obtained directly, the common approach is to calculate the results for the residual strength and approximate the limit state function by fitting, for which various methods have been proposed. In this study, four commonly used fitting methods are investigated: namely, the least-squares method, the moving least-squares method, the radial basis function neural network method, and the weighted piecewise fitting method. These fitting methods are adopted to fit the limit state functions of four typically sample distribution models as well as a damaged tanker and damaged bulk carrier. The residual strength of a damaged ship is obtained by an improved Smith method that accounts for the rotation of the neutral axis. Analysis of the results shows the accuracy of the linear least-squares method and nonlinear least-squares method, which are most commonly used by researchers, is relatively poor, while the weighted piecewise fitting method is the better choice for all investigated combined-bending conditions.

Based on satellite data from the SeaWiFS, MODIS-Aqua, and MODIS-Terra scanners, the long-term dynamics of coccolithophores in the Black Sea and their large-scale heterogeneity have been studied. During the twenty years in May and June, mass development of coccolithophores population of different intensities was recorded annually. Summer blooms of coccolithophores reached peak levels in 2006, 2012, and 2017, after abnormally cold winters. It was noted that in conditions of low summer temperatures, the blooming of coccolithophores could be significantly reduced or acquire a local character (2004). In the anomalous cold summer of 2001, coccolithophore blooms was replaced by the mass growth of diatoms. Over twenty years, numerous signs of coccolithophores mass development in the cold season have been revealed. Winter blooms develop mainly in warm winters with periods of low wind activity. The formation of a thermocline and the surface layer’s stability are essential factors for initiating winter blooms of coccolithophores. It was noted that after the winter blooms of coccolithophores, their summer growth was poorly expressed. It is shown that during periods of rapid growth, the bulk of coccolithophores is concentrated in the upper mixed layer and thermocline. During the blooming period, the share of coccolithophores in phytoplankton biomass constituted 70–85%. The intensity of coccolithophore’s blooms is associated with the previous diatoms’ growth level. The effect of eddies circulation on the distribution and growth of coccolithophores is considered.

Video monitoring has become an indispensable tool to understand beach processes. However, the measurement accuracy derived from the images has been taken for granted despite its dependence on the calibration process and camera movements. An easy to implement self-fed image stabilization algorithm is proposed to solve the camera movements. Georeferenced images were generated from the stabilized images using only one calibration. To assess the performance of the stabilization algorithm, a second set of georeferenced images was created from unstabilized images following the accepted practice of using several calibrations. Shorelines were extracted from the images and corrected with the measured water level and the computed run-up to the 0 m contour. Image-derived corrected shorelines were validated with one hundred beach profile surveys measured during a period of four years along a 1.1 km beach stretch. The simultaneous high-frequency field data available of images and beach surveys are uncommon and allow assessing seasonal changes and long-term trends accuracy. Errors in shoreline position do not increase in time suggesting that the proposed stabilization algorithm does not propagate errors, despite the ever-evolving vegetation in the images. The image stabilization reduces the error in shoreline position by 40 percent, having a larger impact with increasing distance from the camera. Furthermore, the algorithm improves the accuracy on long-term trends by one degree of magnitude (0.01 m/year vs. 0.25 m/year).

Wave overtopping can cause erosion on the landward slope due to high flow velocities and turbulence that cause high stresses on the cover. Innovative block revetments such as Grassblocks protect the subsoil of the dike against erosion. The blocks are permeable, which reduces the flow velocity and the pressures along the landward slope. The performance of these blocks is assessed in physical tests, which provides insights into the stability of the blocks. However, such experiments are expensive and accurate measurements are difficult due to highly turbulent conditions. Therefore, the goal of this study is to determine the hydrodynamic conditions at the dike cover caused by the wave run-up on the seaward slope and by the overtopping flow over the crest and landward slope. The geometry and wave conditions from the physical test at the Deltares Delta flume are implemented in an OpenFOAM® numerical model. Using the porousWaveFoam solver, a porous layer on the crest and landward slope is implemented, where the flow resistance of this porous layer largely depends on the resistance coefficients α [-] and β [-]. The numerical model is calibrated based on resistance coefficients as introduced earlier in the literature, which showed that the resistance coefficients of α=500 and β=2.0 performed best for the peak flow velocities and the peak pressures. The numerical model is evaluated by using these resistance coefficients in other time series of the physical tests. The evaluated model is then used to determine the hydrodynamic conditions on the landward slope, which showed that the pressure was the most influential hydrodynamic condition at the time of failure. Finally, the model showed that a porosity of n=0.6 and the porous layer thickness η=36 mm reduced the peak pressure the most.

With the aim to solve the problem of missing or tampering of ship type information in AIS information, in this paper, a novel ship type recognition scheme based on ship navigating trajectory and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. Firstly, according to speed and acceleration of the ship, three ship navigating situations, i.e., static, normal navigation and maneuvering, are integrated into the process of trajectory images generation in the form of pixels. Then, three kinds of modular network structures with different depths are trained and optimized to determine the appropriate convolutional neural network structure. In the validation phase of the model, a large amount of verified data with a time span of one month was used, covering a variety of water conditions including open water, ports, rivers and lakes. Following this approach, a kind of CNN scheme which can be directly used to identify ship types in a wide range of waters is proposed. This scheme can be used to judge the ship type when the static information is completely missing and to test the data when the ship type information is partially missing.

A novel scour protection approach for pipeline using the Ionic Soil Stabilizer (ISS) solidified soil was proposed in this study. The ISS-solidified slurry can be poured adjacent to the pipeline immediately after it was placed, or in the growing scour holes. In the present study, the first type was utilized as the scour protection layer around the pipeline. A series of laboratory flume tests were conducted to validate the protective capacity of ISS-solidified slurry for the pipeline in waves and combined waves and current. Then, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests and pore size tests were carried out, respectively, to investigate the mechanism of ISS-solidified slurry for scour protection around the pipeline. Finally, the effects of the ISS-solidified layer for liquefaction stability of non-cohesive subsoil were evaluated. The results indicated that the ISS-solidified slurry is a reliable, economic approach for scour protection around pipelines in the ocean environment. It is noteworthy that if a non-cohesive soil layer underlies the ISS-solidified slurry, it is vulnerable to suffer accumulated liquefaction due to the dense crust structure of the ISS-solidified layer, so the adverse effects for accumulated liquefaction should be considered carefully due to the set of the ISS-solidified layer.

In this study, a semi-analytical solution to the dynamic responses of a multilayered transversely isotropic poroelastic seabed under combined wave and current loadings is proposed based on the dynamic stiffness matrix method. This solution is first analytically validated with a single-layered and a two-layered isotropic seabed and then verified against previous experimental results. After that, parametric studies are carried out to probe the effects of the soil’s anisotropic characteristics and the effects of ocean waves and currents on the dynamic responses and the maximum liquefaction depth. The results show that the dynamic responses of a transversely isotropic seabed are more sensitive to the ratio of the soil’s vertical Young’s modulus to horizontal Young’s modulus (Ev/Eh) and the ratio of the vertical shear modulus to Ev (Gv/Ev) than to the vertical-to-horizontal ratio of the permeability coefficient (Kv/Kh). A lower degree of quasi-saturation, higher porosity, a shorter wave period, and a following current all result in a greater maximum liquefaction depth. Moreover, it is revealed that the maximum liquefaction depth of a transversely isotropic seabed would be underestimated under the isotropic assumption. Furthermore, unlike the behavior of an isotropic seabed, the transversely isotropic seabed tends to liquefy when fully saturated in nonlinear waves. This result supplements and reinforces the conclusions determined in previous studies. This work affirms that it is necessary for offshore engineering to consider the transversely isotropic characteristics of the seabed for bottom-fixed and subsea offshore structures.

The finite element model SHYFEM was used to study the hydrodynamics and variability of water level, salinity, temperature, and water residence time (WRT) in the Oualidia lagoon located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. The lagoon hosts a RAMSAR convention-protected area and also offers a set of valuable ecosystem services providing the source of income for the local population. To assess the effects of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) inputs in the study area, four simulations were set up using different SGD inputs estimates in addition to tidal forcing, bathymetry, meteorological data including solar radiation, rain, and wind, in addition to boundary conditions in the Atlantic such as salinity, water level, and water temperature. The model was calibrated and validated using hydrodynamic measurements of previous studies in 2012 and 2013. The final results from the model are in good agreement with measured data. The simulation with SGD input ~0.05 m3 s−1 produced salinity values closest to the observed ones. Calculated spatial distribution of WRT, temperature, and salinity reduced to coordinates in two PCA axes is consistent with lagoon zones developed earlier using the benthic macroinvertebrate distribution. The calculated spatial distribution of WRT allowed us to evaluate the placement of oyster aquaculture farms and small-scale fisheries in relation to water quality issues existing in the lagoon.

This research evaluated fisheries reference points and stock status to assess the sustainability of the croaker fishery (Sciaenidae) from the Bay of Bengal (BoB), Bangladesh. Sixteen years (2001–2016) of catch-effort data were analyzed using two surplus production models (Schaefer and Fox), the Monte Carlo method (CMSY) and the Bayesian state-space Schaefer surplus production model (BSM) method. This research applies a Stock–Production Model Incorporating Covariates (ASPIC) software package to run the Schaefer and Fox model. The maximum sustainable yield (MSY) produced by all models ranged from 33,900 to 35,900 metric tons (mt), which is very close to last year’s catch (33,768 mt in 2016). The estimated B > BMSY and F < FMSY indicated the safe biomass and fishing status. The calculated F/FMSY was 0.89, 0.87, and 0.81, and B/BMSY was 1.05, 1.07, and 1.14 for Fox, Schaefer, and BSM, respectively, indicating the fully exploited status of croaker stock in the BoB, Bangladesh. The representation of the Kobe phase plot suggested that the exploitation of croaker stock started from the yellow (unsustainable) quadrant in 2001 and gradually moved to the green (sustainable) quadrant in 2016 because of the reduction in fishing efforts and safe fishing pressure after 2012. Thus, this research suggests that the current fishing pressure needs to be maintained so that the yearly catch does not exceed the MSY limit of croaker. Additionally, specific management measures should implement to guarantee croaker and other fisheries from the BoB.

The hydrodynamic performance of a novel hovering autonomous underwater vehicle, the autonomous underwater helicopter (AUH), with an original disk-shaped hull (HG1) and an improved fore–aft asymmetric hull (HG3), is investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics with the adoption of overlapping mesh method. The hydrodynamic performance of the two hull shapes in surge motion with variation of the angle of attack is compared. The results show that HG3 has less resistance and higher motion stability compared to HG1. With the angle of attack reaching 10 degrees, both HG1 and HG3 achieve the maximum lift-to-drag ratio, which is higher for HG3 compared to HG1. Furthermore, based on the numerical simulation of the plane motion mechanism test (PMM) and according to Routh’s stability criterion, the horizontal movement and vertical movement stability indexes of HG1 and HG3 (GHHG1=1.0, GVHG1=49.7, GHHG2=1.0, GVHG3=2.1) are obtained, which further show that the AUH has better vertical movement stability than the torpedo-shaped AUV. Furthermore, the scale model tail velocity experiment indirectly shows that HG3 has better hydrodynamic performance than HG1.

The Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW) refers to seawater with a water temperature of 10 °C or less found at the bottom of the center of the Yellow Sea. The spatiotemporal variability of the YSBCW directly affects the distribution of organisms in the marine ecosystem. In this study, hydroacoustic and net surveys were conducted in April (spring) to understand the spatial distribution of the sound scattering layer (SSL) and estimate the density of Euphausia pacifica (E. pacifica) in the YSBCW. Despite the shallow water in the YSBCW region, E. pacifica formed an SSL, which was distributed near the bottom during the daytime; it showed a diel vertical migration (DVM) pattern of movement toward the surface during the nighttime. The mean upward and downward swimming speeds around sunset and sunrise were approximately 0.6 and 0.3–0.4 m/min, respectively. The E. pacifica density was estimated in the central, western, and eastern regions; the results were approximately 15.8, 1.3, and 10.3 g/m2, respectively, indicating significant differences according to region. The results revealed high-density distributions in the central and eastern regions related to the water temperature structure, which differs regionally in the YSBCW area. Additional studies are needed regarding the spatial distribution of E. pacifica in the YSBCW and its relationship with various ocean environmental parameters according to season. The results of this study contribute to a greater understanding of the structure of the marine ecosystem in the YSBCW.

Around the cooperative path-following control for the underactuated surface vessel (USV) and the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a logic virtual ship-logic virtual aircraft (LVS-LVA) guidance principle is developed to generate the reference heading signals for the USV-UAV system by using the “virtual ship” and the “virtual aircraft”, which is critical to establish an effective correlation between the USV and the UAV. Taking the steerable variables (the main engine speed and the rudder angle of the USV, and the rotor angular velocities of the UAV) as the control input, a robust adaptive neural cooperative control algorithm was designed by employing the dynamic surface control (DSC), radial basic function neural networks (RBF-NNs) and the event-triggered technique. In the proposed algorithm, the reference roll angle and pitch angle for the UAV can be calculated from the position control loop by virtue of the nonlinear decouple technique. In addition, the system uncertainties were approximated through the RBF-NNs and the transmission burden from the controller to the actuators was reduced for merits of the event-triggered technique. Thus, the derived control law is superior in terms of the concise form, low transmission burden and robustness. Furthermore, the tracking errors of the USV-UAV cooperative control system can converge to a small compact set through adjusting the designed control parameters appropriately, and it can be also guaranteed that all the signals are the semi-global uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified via numerical simulations in the presence of the time-varying disturbances.

Owing to environmental constraints, it is challenging to stably conduct various missions or surveys of the seabed for a prolonged period in the marine environment. To address this challenge, several devices and technologies are being developed. In this study, we aimed to develop an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV)—specifically, a towed underwater platform—that can be loaded and unloaded via joint operation with an unmanned surface vehicle, which can be connected to a wired cable to obtain a stable power supply and high-speed communication. In addition, various sensors for detection are employed to investigate the marine environment and conduct missions. Furthermore, we operated the developed UUV in actual waters, reviewed the results, and examined its practical operability.

International audience; The theory of surface wave generation, in viscous flows, is modified by replacing the linear-logarithmic shear velocity profile, in the air, with a model which links smoothly the linear and logarithmic layers through the buffer layer. This profile includes the effects of air flow turbulence using a damped mixing-length model. In the water, an exponential shear velocity profile is used. It is shown that this modified and coupled shear-velocity profile gives a better agreement with experimental data than the coupled linear-logarithmic, non smooth profile, (in the air)–exponential profile (in the water), widely used in the literature. We also give new insights on retrograde modes that are Doppler shifted by the surface velocity at the air-sea interface, namely on the threshold value of the surface current for the occurrence of a second unstable mode.

Centrifugal pumps are the critical components in deep-sea mining. In order to investigate the particle motion in the curved channel of the impeller, three different types of curvature conform to blade profile to simplify the impeller design of pumps. A numerical study is conducted to investigate the flow field in a varying-curvature channel for solid-liquid two-phase flow. The flow of particles within the varying curvature channel is studied by combining the discrete element method (DEM) with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a comparison with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) test results. The results show that a polyhedral mesh with a small mesh number yields very accurate results, which makes it very suitable for CFD-DEM. Based on this method, the movement of a single particle is compared and analyzed, and the particle-motion law is obtained. The effects of the curvature ratio Cr and area ratio Ar on the motion law for a single particle are studied, and the simulation results are analyzed statistically. The results show that the effect of Cr on both the particle slip velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy only changes its strength, while the distribution law does not change significantly. Compared with the curvature ratio Cr, the area ratio Ar has a greater impact on the particles, and its distribution law becomes clearly different. As the area ratio Ar increases, the arc radius and length of the corresponding particle trajectory decrease.

Estimating wave-breaking indexes such as wave height and water depth is essential to understanding the location and scale of the breaking wave. Therefore, numerous wave-flume laboratory experiments have been conducted to develop empirical wave-breaking formulas. However, the nonlinearity between the parameters has not been fully incorporated into the empirical equations. Thus, this study proposes a multilayer neural network utilizing the nonlinear activation function and backpropagation to extract nonlinear relationships. Existing laboratory experiment data for the monochromatic regular wave are used to train the proposed network. Specifically, the bottom slope, deep-water wave height and wave period are plugged in as the input values that simultaneously estimate the breaking-wave height and wave-breaking location. Typical empirical equations employ deep-water wave height and length as input variables to predict the breaking-wave height and water depth. A newly proposed model directly utilizes breaking-wave height and water depth without nondimensionalization. Thus, the applicability can be significantly improved. The estimated wave-breaking index is statistically verified using the bias, root-mean-square errors, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The performance of the proposed model is better than existing breaking-wave-index formulas as well as having robust applicability to laboratory experiment conditions, such as wave condition, bottom slope, and experimental scale.

A new species, Diaphus balanovi, is described based on 35 specimens collected over the Emperor Seamount Chain in the north-western Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the D. fulgens species complex and is most similar to D. kuroshio both morphologically and genetically. Nevertheless, the new species can be distinguished from D. kuroshio by its higher gill-rakers count, large luminous scale at PLO, large Dn, somewhat higher position of SAO3, otolith shape, and larger absolute size. The CO1 mtDNA sequence of D. balanovi differs by 16 substitutions from that of D. kuroshio. Diaphus balanovi may represent a benthopelagic derivate of D. kuroshio endemic to the Emperor Seamounts.

In this paper, a variable gain prescribed performance control law is proposed for dynamic positioning (DP) of ships with positioning error constraints, input saturation and unknown external disturbances. The error performance index functions are designed to preset the prescribed performance bounds and the error mapping functions are constructed to incorporate the prescribed performance bounds into the DP control design. The variable gain technique is used to limit the output amplitude of the control law to avoid input saturation of the system by dynamically adjusting the control gain of the DP control law according to the positioning errors, and the error mapping function replaces the positioning error as a recursive sliding-mode surface to realize the prescribed performance control of the system and guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system with variable control gains. It has been proved that the proposed DP control law can make the uniformly ultimately boundedness of all signals in the DP closed-loop control system. The numerical simulation results illustrate that the proposed control law can make the ship’s position and heading maintain at the desired value with positioning error constraints, enhance the non-fragility of the DP control law to the perturbation of system’s parameters and improve the system’s rejection ability to external disturbances.

3D sound propagation modeling in the context of acoustic noise monitoring problems is considered. A technique of effective source spectrum reconstruction from a reference single-hydrophone measurement is discussed, and the procedure of simulation of sound exposure level (SEL) distribution over a large sea area is described. The proposed technique is also used for the modeling of pulse signal waveforms at other receiver locations, and results of a direct comparison with the pulses observed in the experimental data is presented.

Nowadays, the environmental impact of shipping constitutes an important challenge. In order to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible, an important priority consists of progressing on the decarbonization of marine fuels. Free-carbon fuels, used as single fuel or in a dual-fuel mode, are gaining special interest for marine engines. A dual fuel ammonia-diesel operation is proposed in which ammonia is introduced with the intake air. According to this, the present work analyzes the possibilities of ammonia in marine diesel engines. Several ammonia-diesel proportions were analyzed, and it was found that when the proportion of ammonia is increased, important reductions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and unburnt hydrocarbons are obtained, but at the expense of increments of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), which are only low when too small or too large proportions of ammonia are employed. In order to reduce NOx too, a second ammonia injection along the expansion stroke is proposed. This measure leads to important NOx reductions.

The gyrostabilizer produces the anti-roll effect through the precession output moment generated by a high-speed rotating flywheel. As a floating-base multi-body system composed of ship and gyrostabilizer, the recent research that has only focused on the control strategies or multi-body dynamics is obviously not comprehensive. This study presents an adaptive controller based on the variable gain control strategy for a marine gyrostabilizer installed on a port salvage tug. The variable gain control strategy controlled the flywheel precession output moment of the gyrostabilizer and thereby of the precession process, to reduce the ship roll motion effectively. Furthermore, a full-system hydrodynamic model of a gyrostabilizer-ship-wave based on three-dimensional numerical wave flume technology was innovatively established to evaluate its anti-roll performance under irregular wave conditions. The simulation results show that, for the sea state considered, the increase of spin rate of gyrostabilizer flywheel improved the anti-roll effect significantly. The average anti-roll rate of the gyrostabilizer decreased with the increase of significant wave height, wave period and wave encounter angle.

China is one of the countries most affected by typhoon disasters. It is of great significance to study the mechanism of typhoon disasters and construct a typhoon disaster chain for emergency management and disaster reduction. The evolution process of typhoon disaster based on expert knowledge and historical disaster data has been summarized in previous studies, which relied too much on artificial experience while less in-depth consideration was given to the disaster exposure, the social environment, as well as the spatio-temporal factors. Hence, problems, such as incomplete content and inconsistent expression of typhoon disaster knowledge, have arisen. With the development of computer technology, massive Web corpus with numerous Web news and various improvised content on the social media platform, and ontology that enables consistent expression new light has been shed on the knowledge discovery of typhoon disaster. With the Chinese Web corpus as its source, this research proposes a method to construct a typhoon disaster chain so as to obtain disaster information more efficiently, explore the spatio-temporal trends of disasters and their impact on human society, and then comprehensively comprehend the process of typhoon disaster. First, a quintuple structure (Concept, Property, Relationship, Rule and Instance) is used to design the Typhoon Disaster Chain Ontology Model (TDCOM) which contains the elements involved in a typhoon disaster. Then, the information extraction process, regarded as a sequence labeling task in the present study, is combined with the BERT model so as to extract typhoon event-elements from the customized corpus. Finally, taking Typhoon Mangkhut as an example, the typical typhoon disaster chain is constructed by data fusion and structured expression. The results show that the methods presented in this research can provide scientific support for analyzing the evolution process of typhoon disasters and their impact on human society.

European seas have a strong economic role both in terms of transport and tourism. Providing more knowledge, regarding the mean and extreme values of the wind and sea state conditions in the areas characterized by high maritime traffic, helps to improve navigational safety. From this perspective, six zones with high maritime traffic are studied. ERA5 database, a state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset provided by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), is used to assess the average values and the percentiles for the wind speed and the main wave parameters in the target areas considering the period 2001–2020. The main European routes and the extreme conditions along them as well as the areas characterized by high values of wind speed and high waves were also identified. A more comprehensive picture of the expected dynamics of the environmental matrix along the most significant shipping routes is useful because in this way the most dangerous areas could be avoided by ships for the safety of passengers and transported goods.

Active surface morphing is a nonintrusive flow control technique that can delay separation in laminar and turbulent boundary layers. Most of the experimental studies of such control strategy have been carried out in wind tunnels at low Reynolds numbers with costly actuators. In contrast, the implementation of such a control strategy at low cost for an underwater environment remains vastly unexplored. This paper explores active surface morphing at low cost and at low Reynolds for underwater applications. We do this with a 3D printed foil submerged in a water tunnel. The suction surface of the foil is covered with a magnetoelastic membrane. The membrane is actuated via two electromagnets that are positioned inside of the foil. Three actuation frequencies (slow, intermediate, fast) are tested and the deformation of the membrane is measured with an optosensor. We show that lift increases by 1%, whilst drag decreases by 6% at a Strouhal number of 0.3, i.e., at the fast actuation case. We demonstrate that surface actuation is applicable to the marine environment through an off the shelf approach, and that this method is more economical than existing active surface morphing technologies. Since the actuation mechanism is not energy intensive, it is envisioned that it could be applied to marine energy devices, boat appendages, and autonomous underwater vehicles.

We propose an effective, low complexity and multifaceted scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system for underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. In UWA OFDM systems, PAPR reduction is a challenging task due to low bandwidth availability along with computational and power limitations. The proposed scheme takes advantage of XOR ciphering and generates ciphered Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes that have low PAPR. This scheme is based upon an algorithm that computes several keys offline, such that when the BCH codes are XOR-ciphered with these keys, it lowers the PAPR of BCH-encoded signals. The subsequent low PAPR modified BCH codes produced using the chosen keys are used in transmission. This technique is ideal for UWA systems as it does not require additional computational power at the transceiver during live transmission. The advantage of the proposed scheme is threefold. First, it reduces the PAPR; second, since it uses BCH codes, the bit error rate (BER) of the system improves; and third, a level of encryption is introduced via XOR ciphering, enabling secure communication. Simulations were performed in a realistic UWA channel, and the results demonstrated that the proposed scheme could indeed achieve all three objectives with minimum computational power.

Neopyropia yezoensis is an economically important marine crop that can survive dehydrating conditions when nets are lifted from seawater. During this process, production of oxygen radicals and the resulting up-regulation of antioxidant enzymes mediated by the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway played an important role. However, there were no reports about the significance regarding the protection of seaweed throughout the entire production season. Especially, in new aquatic farms in Shandong Province that were formed when traditional N. yezoensis cultivation moved north. Here, we determined the levels of ABA, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), soluble protein, chlorophyll, and cell wall polysaccharides in samples collected at different harvest periods from Jimo aquatic farm, Shandong Province. The activities and expression of NADPH oxidase (NOX) and antioxidant enzymes in the corresponding samples were also determined. Combined with the monitoring data of sea surface temperature and solar light intensity, we proposed that the cultivation of N. yezoensis in Shandong Province was not affected by high-temperature stress. However, photoinhibition in N. yezoensis usually occurs at noon, especially in March. Both the activities and the expression of NOX and antioxidant enzymes were up-regulated continuously. It is reasonable to speculate that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by NOX induced the up-regulation of antioxidant enzymes through the ABA signaling pathway. Although antioxidant enzymes play a pivotal role during the cultivation of N. yezoensis, the production of ROS also caused a shift in gene expression, accumulation of secondary metabolites, and even decreased the chlorophyll pool size, which eventually led to a decrease in algae assimilation. Accordingly, we suggest that the dehydration of N. yezoensis nets should be adopted when necessary and the extent of dehydration should be paid special consideration to avoid an excessive cellular response caused by ROS.

Tank sloshing is widely present in many engineering fields, especially in the field of marine. Due to the trend of large-scale liquid cargo ships, it is of great significance to study the coupled motion response of ships with tanks in beam waves. In this study, the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method and experiments are used to study the response of a ship with/without a tank in beam waves. All the computations are performed by an in-house CFD solver, which is used to solve RANS (Reynold Average Navier-Stokes) equations coupled with six degrees-of-freedom solid-body motion equations. The Level Set Method is used to solve the free surface. Verification work on the grid number and time step size has been conducted. The simulation results agree with the experimental results well, which shows that the numerical method is accurate enough. In this paper, several different working conditions are set up, and the effects of the liquid height in the tank, the size of the tank and the wavelength ratio of the incident wave on the ship’s motion are studied. The results show the effect of tank sloshing on the ship’s motion in different working conditions.

Fluctuations of sound intensity in the presence of moving nonlinear internal waves (NIWs) are studied. Prior works revealed the existence of peaks in the spectrum of these fluctuations due to mode coupling. In the given paper, the results of experiment ASIAEX 2001 are considered. Episodes are analyzed when soliton-like NIW move for ~6 h approximately along an acoustic track of length ~30 km. The depth of the ocean changes from ~350 m (position of the source) up to ~120 m near the receiver (Vertical Line Array). The source, placed near the bottom, transmitted pulses (M-sequences) with a frequency of 224 Hz. Theoretical analysis and numerical modeling show that peak frequencies in the spectrum of intensity fluctuations correspond to the most strongly interacting pairs of modes: in the given case pairs 2–3 and 3–4 and values of dominating frequencies are determined by the spatial scale of interference beating Λ of coupling modes and by the speed v of NIW. Due to the fact that in the narrowing channel velocity v decreases as well as the value of Λ, the predominant frequency as a function of time remains approximately the same. Results of modeling are in a good agreement with experimental data.

The e-navigation concept was introduced by the IMO to enhance berth-to-berth navigation towards enhancing environmental protection, and safety and security at sea by leveraging technological advancements. Even though a number of e-navigation testbeds including some recognized by the IALA exist, they pertain to parts only of the Integrated Navigation System (INS) concept. Moreover, existing e-navigation and bridge testbeds do not have a cybersecurity testing functionality, therefore they cannot be used for assessing the cybersecurity posture of the INS. With cybersecurity concerns on the rise in the maritime domain, it is important to provide such capability. In this paper we review existing bridge testbeds, IMO regulations, and international standards, to first define a reference architecture for the INS and then to develop design specifications for an INS Cyber-Physical Range, i.e., an INS testbed with cybersecurity testing functionality.

The lipid and fatty acid profile of muscles in beaked redfish, caught and fixed in the wild versus specimens from food supermarkets (“commercial”), were evaluated, as well as the health implications of this popular food for its consumers based on the calculation of nutritional quality indexes. The contents of the total lipids (TLs), total phospholipids (PLs), monoacylglycerols (MAGs), diacylglycerols (DAGs), triacylglycerols (TAGs), cholesterol (Chol), Chol esters, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), and wax esters were determined by HPTLC; the phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC) were determined by HPLC; and fatty acids of total lipids were determined using GC. The TL content was higher in commercial products due to DA and NEFAs, among PL fractions the content of LysoPC was also higher. The results indicated multidirectional processes of slight degradation of lipids in commercial products in comparison to wild. The flesh lipid quality index was lower due to EPA and DHA in commercial specimens while the index of thrombogenicity was significantly higher. The differences in the quantities of lipid classes between muscle biopsy regions in fish apparently corroborate the morphology and physiology of deep-water fish.

This study presents a numerical research on the open-water performance of a pumpjet propulsor at different scales. Simulations were performed by an in-house viscous CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) code. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method with SST k-ω turbulence model is employed. A dynamic overset grid is used to treat the relative motion between the rotor and other parts. The numerical results are compared with the model test data and they agree well. Comparisons for the open-water performance between the pumpjet propulsors with two scales are carried out. The results indicate that the total thrust coefficient of the large-scale pumpjet propulsor is greater than that of the small-scale one while the torque coefficient is smaller. Therefore, the efficiency of the large-scale pumpjet propulsor is about 8~10% higher than that of the small-scale pumpjet propulsor. The open-water performance of the rotor, pre-swirl stator and duct is obtained separately to estimate the discrepancies on the thrust and torque coefficients between different scales. To analyze the scale effect from different parts, the research on flow field and pressure distribution are carried out. The variation of total thrust and torque coefficient comes mainly from the rotor, which is caused by the flow field, influenced by the duct and stator.

A tidal lagoon system has multiple environmental, societal, and economic implications. To investigate the mechanism of influence of the geomorphological evolution of a tidal lagoon, the effect of critical erosion shear stress, critical deposition shear stress, sediment settling velocity, and initial bed elevation were assessed by applying the MIKE hydro- and morpho-dynamic model to a typical tidal lagoon, Qilihai Lagoon. According to the simulation results, without sediment supply, an increase of critical erosion, deposition shear stress, or sediment settling velocity gives rise to tidal networks with a stable terrain. Such an equilibrium state can be defined as when the change of net erosion has little variation, which can be achieved due to counter actions between the erosion and deposition effect. Moreover, the influence of the initial bed elevation depends on the lowest tidal level. When the initial bed elevation is below the lowest tidal level, the tidal networks tend to be fully developed. A Spearman correlation analysis indicated that the geomorphological evolution is more sensitive to critical erosion or deposition shear stress than sediment settling velocity and initial bed elevation. Exponential sea level rise contributes to more intensive erosion than the linear or the parabolic sea level rise in the long-term evolution of a tidal lagoon.

The swimming larva represents the dispersal phase of ascidians, marine invertebrates belonging to tunicates. Due to its adhesive papillae, the larva searches the substrate, adheres to it, and undergoes metamorphosis, thereby becoming a sessile filter feeding animal. The larva anatomy has been described in detail in a few species, revealing a different degree of adult structure differentiation, called adultation. In the solitary ascidian Halocynthia roretzi, a species reared for commercial purposes, embryogenesis has been described in detail, but information on the larval anatomy is still lacking. Here, we describe it using a comparative approach, utilizing 3D reconstruction, as well as histological/TEM observations, with attention to its papillae. The larva is comparable to those of other solitary ascidians, such as Ciona intestinalis. However, it displays a higher level of adultation for the presence of the atrium, opened outside by means of the atrial siphon, and the peribranchial chambers. It does not reach the level of complexity of the larva of Botryllus schlosseri, a phylogenetically close colonial ascidian. Our study reveals that the papillae of H. roretzi, previously described as simple and conform, exhibit dynamic changes during settlement. This opens up new considerations on papillae morphology and evolution and deserves to be further investigated.

The sea surface temperature (SST) is an important factor and indicator of the sea water quality, with various ecological and anthropogenic implications. We used high-resolution satellite-derived SST data, in tandem with field observations and long-term meteorological data, to investigate the spatial and interannual SST variability over the Aegean, Ionian, and Cretan (AIC) Seas during the recent 14-year period (2008–2021). Increasing trends were identified for most of the sub-basins of the AIC Seas. The numbers and durations (days) of the marine heat waves (MHWs) have significantly increased, especially during the last quadrennial period (2018–2021). Changes have been detected in both the maximum and minimum values; however, the trend of the mean annual values is mainly associated with the interannual increases in the lowest values (weaker minima during the cold seasons). The interannual variability and the increasing positive trends of the air temperature are very similar to the SST variations, showing a 5-to-10-day lag between the seasonal time series of the two parameters for all regions; however, extreme atmospheric events (e.g., cold fronts or heat waves) have a more direct impact on the SST variability (zero lag). MHWs were more frequent over the northern Aegean Sea, especially in Thermaikos Gulf, which is characterized as a “hot spot” for MHWs. MHWs were rarer over the southern regions, especially over the southeastern Aegean and Cretan Seas. A stratified upper ocean, controlled by buoyant brackish plumes, such as the Black Sea Waters (BSW) in the northern Aegean, may increase the heat storage capacity of the surface water masses, contributing to the further warming of the ocean. This was the case in the summer of 2021, which was a unique year for the AIC Seas, and especially for the northern Aegean, which revealed the highest SST values among all the study years. The satellite-derived observations of the 2008–2021 period showed increasing trends for all coastal waters, strong trend slopes for most of the coasts of the northern Aegean and central Ionian Seas, and milder trend slopes in the eastern Aegean.
