With population growth and economic development, the conflict between supply and demand of water resources is becoming more serious in recent years. In order to alleviate basin water shortage, a novel water resources allocation model which employs large-scale reservoirs to optimize water supply process is proposed in this paper. The proposed model has two conflicting objectives that are the minimization of the total water supply shortfall and the maximization of the total power generation. Because of the huge system scale and numerous constraints, water resources optimal allocation (WROA) is a high dimensional, coupled and nonlinear problem. An improved hybrid optimal method which combines decomposition coordination (DC) and discrete differential dynamic programming (DDDP) is developed to optimize the complex problem. An adaptive bias corridor technology is presented to improve convergence speed during subsystem optimization. Finally, the proposed optimal model and the hybrid method are applied to the water resources allocation in the upper reaches of Yangtze River. Knowledge of the spatial distribution and temporal changes of the land surface parameters at the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) region is essential to understanding the changes of hydrological processes and climate systems possibly brought by TGD. Based on accumulated observations for years from a spaceborne passive microwave radiometer, this study presents and analyzes the spatial and temporal distribution of soil moisture in the TGD region. Major drought and flood events are identified from the satellite-derived soil moisture products. Moreover, the areas around the largest freshwater lakes of China, the Dongting and Poyang Lakes, are frequently subjected to drought events, which might be partially related to the impoundment of TGD since the year 2006. Data analysis further reveals a statistically significant drying trend in May in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River over the years 2003-11. These analyses indicate that water shortage becomes a realistic challenge for the once water abundant Yangtze River region, and more considerations on the possible consequences brought by climate changes are needed for the operation of TGD. In 2002, China launched the South-to-North Water Transfer Project after completing a 50-year feasibility study. By 2050, the three-route (i.e., East, Middle, and West) project will be capable of transferring 44.8 billion m3/year of water from the water rich Yangtze River to the arid north to alleviate water shortage and help secure a balanced social and economic development across the nation. However, diversion of such a large quantity of water could profoundly change the riverine environment of the upper Yellow River and the lower reach of the Han River, a tributary of the Yangtze River and the water supplying area of the project’s Middle Route, because of changes in the annual discharge. Secondary salinization seems inevitable in the water receiving areas of the North China Plain, and decrease in the discharge of the Yangtze River will result in seawater intrusion into the Yangtze Delta. This paper describes the project and discusses its environmental implications. Unplanned indirect (de facto) wastewater reuse occurs when wastewater is discharged into surface waters upstream of potable drinking water treatment plant intakes. This paper aims to predict percentages and trends of de facto reuse throughout the Yangtze River watershed in order to understand the relative contribution of wastewater discharges into the river and its tributaries towards averting water scarcity concerns. The Yangtze River is the third longest in the world and supports more than 1/15 of the world's population, yet the importance of wastewater on the river remains ill-defined. Municipal wastewater produced in the Yangtze River Basin increased by 41% between 1998 and 2014, from 2580 m 3 /s to 3646 m 3 /s. Under low flow conditions in the Yangtze River near Shanghai, treated wastewater contributions to river flows increased from 8% in 1998 to 14% in 2014. The highest levels of de facto reuse appeared along a major tributary (Han River) of the Yangtze River, where de facto reuse can exceed 20%. While this initial analysis of de facto reuse used water supply and wastewater data from 110 cities in the basin and 11 gauging stations with > 50 years of historic streamflow data, the outcome was limited by the lack of gauging stations at more locations (i.e., data had to be predicted using digital elevation mapping) and lack of precise geospatial location of drinking water intakes or wastewater discharges. This limited the predictive capability of the model relative to larger datasets available in other countries (e.g., USA). This assessment is the first analysis of de facto wastewater reuse in the Yangtze River Basin. It will help identify sections of the river at higher risk for wastewater-related pollutants due to presence of—and reliance on—wastewater discharge that could be the focus of field studies and model predictions of higher spatial and temporal resolution. Hanjiang river is the longest river in Yangtze river basin, having high economic importance to China for its economically exploitable hydropower and potential water resources. In an attempt to satisfy China's economic and social development needs, the Chinese government has established cascade dams and four relative water diversion projects in Hanjiang river, which aims at transferring water from south (Hanjiang river) to north (water-stricken areas). However, there are increasing eco-environmental concerns associated with the establishment and development of cascade hydropower. In this study, the opportunities and eco-environmental influences related to Hanjiang river's cascade hydropower development are explored and then recommendations are put forward to minimize the potential impacts. The implementation of vigorous projects related to hydropower and water diversion has an important role to play in solving flood, energy and water shortage problems. In addition, the eco-environmental and socio-economic impacts on the middle and downstream and its diversion can be relieved to some degree in the area. However, the establishment of projects can cause several impacts on the local eco-environment. First, Danjiangkou reservoir construction can cause change in water flow, water bloom, soil erosion in the river basin. Second, it can directly lead to the decrease of 10.5 billion cubic meters of water in the middle- and downstream areas, threatening the local supply of drinking water and influencing farming irrigation and industrial production. The diverse hydro-climate between northern and southern China causes serious complications related to increasing food demand, declining water availability, and increasing flood risk in Changjiang and Yellow River basins. The huge projects of Three Gorges Dam (TGD) for diminishing flood and South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP) for driving water from Changjiang to Yellow and Hai Rivers to compensate for an imbalance of environmental resources will not necessarily solve all of the problems that they were originally intended to address. A sophisticated eco-hydrological model is required to evaluate the optimum amount of transferred water associated with these projects, together with socio-economic and environmental consequences. For this purpose, the process-based National Integrated Catchment-based Eco-hydrology (NICE) model was modified to couple with complex sub-systems in irrigation, stream junction, reservoir operation, and water transfer, to develop coupled human and natural systems and evaluate cause and effect of uneven water resources. The model clarified the impact of irrigation on eco-hydrological processes and predicted hydrologic change after TGD and SNWTP to estimate whether dilemmas between water stress, crop productivity, and ecosystem degradation would diminish. The result also showed the missing role of surface water - groundwater interactions and lateral subsurface flow, usually not considered important by assuming stationarity in previous researches of continental scales. A heterogeneous pattern of Time-Integrated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index gradient in agricultural fields helped to estimate uneven crop yield and its relation to water availability. This integrated approach will have some roles not only to re-consider this complex process from the view point of hydrologic and biogeochemical cycles, but also to clarify how the substantial pressures of complicated problems can be overcome by effective trans-boundary solutions.
