Salt marshes are globally important ecosystems and thus their resilience to climate change holds societal importance. To date, studies addressing salt marsh responses to climate change have focused on sea‐level rise and biogeochemical feedbacks with increasing inundation. Less is known about how salt marsh sediment temperatures, which impact physical, biological, and chemical ecosystem processes, will respond to climate change. In this study, we present multi‐depth sediment temperature and porewater level data from low‐, mid‐, and high‐marsh sites at a New England salt marsh for a 1‐year period and investigate how salt marsh sediment temperatures respond to atmospheric and oceanic forcing. We use spectral analyses to identify the frequencies at which sediment temperatures vary and link the temperature variations to specific forcing mechanisms. We find that all sites across the marsh responded to air temperature with roughly equal amplitude whereas the responses to radiative heating and ocean tides varied spatially. The high‐marsh site is more sensitive to radiative heating than the mid‐ and low‐marsh sites. The low‐marsh is affected by tidal processes and inundation whereas the high‐ and mid‐marsh sites are not. In addition, we find that the bulk thermal diffusivity of the saturated sediments decreases with distance from the tidal channel. These factors contribute to considerable temporal and spatial variability in sediment temperatures with elevation, distance from the tidal channel, and time of year (season) being most important. Stream temperature is one of the most critical factors controlling aquatic ecosystem health. Practitioners and researchers from a range of fields, including biology, ecology, hydrology, engineering, and watershed management, are concerned with how climate and environmental changes are impacting stream thermal regimes. This primer provides an introduction to the various energy and water exchange processes that underpin stream temperature patterns from small headwater streams to large river systems. An overview of the various energy exchanges is provided, including (1) advection associated with hydrologic processes, and energy exchanges at (2) the stream–atmosphere interface and (3) stream–bed interface. The interaction and spatiotemporal variability of these energy exchange processes are discussed using a water and energy balance framework. A sound physical understanding and appreciation of the complex controls governing stream thermal regimes will help inform effective management strategies to sustain healthy aquatic ecosystems in a changing world. Groundwater is critical for maintaining stream baseflow and thermal stability; however, the influence of groundwater on streamflow has been difficult to evaluate at broad spatial scales. Techniques such as baseflow separation necessitate streamflow records and do not directly indicate whether groundwater inflow may be sourced from more dynamic shallow flowpaths. We present a web tool application PASTA (Paired Air and Stream Temperature Analysis; https://cuahsi.shinyapps.io/pasta/) that capitalizes on increased public stream temperature data availability and large‐scale, gridded climate observations to provide new and efficient insights regarding relative groundwater influence on streams. PASTA analyzes paired air and stream water temperature signals to evaluate spatiotemporal patterns in stream thermal sensitivity and relative groundwater influence, including inference regarding the dominant source groundwater depth (shallow or deep (i.e., approximately >6 m depth)). The tool is linked to publicly available stream temperature datasets and accepts user‐uploaded datasets. As local air temperature is not often monitored, PASTA pulls daily air temperature data from the comprehensive Daymet products when directly measured data are unavailable, allowing the repurposing of existing stream temperature data. After data are selected or uploaded, the tool (a) fits sinusoidal curves of daily stream and air temperatures by year (water or calendar) to indicate groundwater influence characteristics and (b) performs linear regressions for stream versus air temperatures to indicate stream thermal sensitivity. Results are exported in ASCII file format, creating an efficient and approachable analysis tool for the adoption of newly developed heat tracing analysis from stream reach to landscape scales. Plain Language Summary: Comparing stream temperature to air temperature records can identify streamflow sources, or examine stream vulnerability to land use (e.g., impervious cover), climate change, or river use practices (e.g., dams). We have created a website that allows users to conduct two methods of stream and air temperature comparison using their stream temperature data or use publicly available stream temperature resources in a consistent and accessible format. These analyses generate metrics that indicate similarities and differences in air and stream temperature records over time that can provide insight into hydrologic connectivity for a single site or can be compared across time or space to inform changes in stream process within an area or period of interest. Thermal mapping of surface waters and the land surface via UAVs offers exciting opportunities in many scientific disciplines; however, unresolved issues persist related to accuracy and drift of uncooled microbolometric thermal infrared (TIR) sensors. Curiously, most commercially available UAV-based TIR sensors are black, which will theoretically facilitate heating of the uncooled TIR sensor via absorbed solar radiation. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that modifying the surface absorptivity of uncooled TIR sensors can reduce thermal drift by limiting absorptance and associated microbolometer heating. We used two identical uncooled TIR sensors (DJI Zenmuse XT2) but retrofitted one with polished aluminum foil to alter the surface absorptivity and compared the temperature measurements from each sensor to the accurate measurements from instream temperature loggers. In addition, because TIR sensors are passive and measure longwave infrared radiation emitted from the environment, we tested the hypotheses that overcast conditions would reduce solar irradiance, and therefore induce thermal drift, and that increases in air temperature would induce thermal drift. The former is in contrast with the conceptual model of others who have proposed that flying in overcast conditions would increase sensor accuracy. We found the foil-shielded sensor yielded temperatures that were on average 2.2 °C more accurate than those of the matte black sensor (p < 0.0001). Further, we found positive correlations between light intensity (a proxy for incoming irradiance) and increased sensor accuracy for both sensors. Interestingly, light intensity explained 73% of the accuracy variability for the black sensor, but only 40% of the variability in accuracy deviations for the foil-shielded sensor. Unsurprisingly, an increase in air temperature led to a decrease in accuracy for both sensors, where air temperature explained 14% of the variability in accuracy for the black sensor and 31% of the accuracy variability for the foil-shielded sensor. We propose that the discrepancy between the amount of variability explained by light intensity and air temperature is due to changes in the heat energy budget arising from changes in the surface absorptivity. Additionally, we suggest fine-scale changes in river-bed reflectance led to errors in UAV thermal measurements. This article introduces a special issue of the journal Hydrological Processes, featuring seven research papers from Canadian researchers. The lower number of papers in this issue is attributed to the lack of in-person conferences in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian Geophysical Union-Hydrology Section (CGU-HS) is celebrating its 30th anniversary and was formed to support hydrological training and research in Canada. The special issue focuses on cold regions processes, including topics such as alpine moraine hydrology, river ice dynamics, snow accumulation and melt, peatland hydrology, and water temperature. The studies provide valuable insights into hydrologic processes in Canadian watersheds and are relevant to the global hydrology community. The next special issue will be guest-edited by Drs. Intertidal groundwater springs provide thermally stable, nutrient‐rich freshwater that causes fine‐scale variability in water temperature and salinity and promotes biodiversity in coastal estuaries and lagoons. In this study, we combined three thermal sensing techniques to elucidate summer water temperature patterns at the mouths of intertidal groundwater springs and the ambient coastal lagoon in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Thermal infrared imagery captured the spatiotemporal variability in relative temperatures of the lagoon channel and cold‐water plumes from the springs. Thermal anomalies due to the springs were detected at the surface throughout a tidal cycle, suggesting that the thermal plumes were buoyant. Fiber‐optic distributed temperature sensing paired with temperature loggers near the spring outlets recorded groundwater temperatures at low tide (~ 7°C) but ambient lagoon temperatures (up to 26°C) at high tide due to the vertical thermal gradient in the stratified water column. Calculated estuarine Richardson numbers throughout the study confirm intertidal spring buoyancy due to salinity differences. The fiber‐optic distributed temperature sensing results revealed pronounced variations in temperature as evidenced by spatial (3.7°C) and temporal (5.5°C) standard deviations over the cable length during the study and lower mean lagoon bed water temperatures at high tide (22.5°C) than low tide (24.3°C) due to heat advection from tidal pumping. Lagoon temperatures fluctuate at diurnal (solar) and semi‐diurnal (tidal) frequencies. The findings emphasize the efficacy of a multi‐technology approach to reveal fine‐scale and dynamic thermal processes that drive temperature patterns and habitat distribution in coastal lagoon ecosystems and highlight the thermal influence of intertidal springs. Alpine headwaters in subarctic regions are particularly sensitive to climate change, yet there is little information on stream thermal regimes in these areas and how they might respond to global warming. In this paper, we characterize and compare the hydrological and thermal regimes of two subarctic headwater alpine streams within an empirical framework. The streams investigated are located within two adjacent catchments with similar geology, size, elevation and landscape, Granger Creek (GC) and Buckbrush Creek (BB), which are part of the Wolf Creek Research Basin in the Yukon Territory, Canada. Hydrometeorological and high‐resolution stream temperature data were collected throughout summer 2016. Both sites exhibited a flow regime typical of cold alpine headwater catchments influenced by frozen ground and permafrost. Comparatively, GC was characterized by a flashier response with more extreme flows, than BB. In both sites, stream temperature was highly variable and very responsive to short‐term changes in climatic conditions. On average, stream temperature in BB was slightly higher than in GC (respectively 5.8 and 5.7°C), but less variable (average difference between 75th and 25th quantiles of 1.6 and 2.0°C). Regression analysis between mean daily air and stream temperature suggested that a greater relative (to stream flow) groundwater contribution in BB could more effectively buffer atmospheric fluctuations. Heat fluxes were derived and utilized to assess their relative contribution to the energy balance. Overall, non‐advective fluxes followed a daily pattern highly correlated to short‐wave radiation. G1enerally, solar radiation and latent heat were respectively the most important heat source and sink, while air–water interface processes were major factors driving nighttime stream temperature fluctuations. Upward discharge to surface water bodies can be quantified using analytical models based on temperature–depth (T‐z) profiles. The use of sediment T‐z profiles is attractive as discharge estimates can be obtained using point‐in‐time data that are collected inexpensively and rapidly. Previous studies have identified that T‐z methods can only be applied at times of the year when there is significant difference between the streambed–water interface and deeper sediment temperatures (e.g., winter and summer). However, surface water temperatures also vary diurnally, and the influence of these variations on discharge estimates from T‐z methods is poorly understood. For this study, synthetic T‐z profiles were generated numerically using measured streambed interface temperature data to assess the influence of diurnal temperature variations on discharge estimation and provide insight into the suitable application of T‐z methods. Results show that the time of day of data collection can have a substantial influence on vertical flux estimates using T‐z methods. For low groundwater discharge fluxes (e.g., 0.1 m d−1), daily transience in streambed temperatures led to relatively large errors in estimated flow magnitude and direction. For higher discharge fluxes (1.5 m d−1), the influence of transient streambed temperatures on discharge estimates was strongly reduced. Discharge estimates from point‐in‐time T‐z profiles were most accurate when the uppermost point in the T‐z profile was near the bed interface daily mean (two time periods daily). Where temperature time series data are available, daily averaged T‐z profiles can produce accurate discharge estimates across a wide range of discharge rates. Seasonality in shallow groundwater temperature generally had a negligible influence on vertical flow estimates. These findings can be used to plan field campaigns and provide guidance on the optimal application of T‐z methods to quantify vertical groundwater discharge to surface water bodies. Obtaining reliable estimates of vertical groundwater flows remains a challenge but is of critical importance to the management of groundwater resources. When large scale land clearing or groundwater extraction occurs, methods based on water table fluctuations or water chemistry are unreliable. As an alternative, a number of methods based on temperature-depth ( T-z ) profiles are available to provide vertical groundwater flow estimates from which recharge rates may be calculated. However, methods that invoke steady state assumptions have been shown to be inappropriate for sites that have experienced land surface warming. Analytical solutions that account for surface warming are available, but they typically include unrealistic or restrictive assumptions (e.g. no flow initial conditions or linear surface warming). Here, we use a new analytical solution and associated computer program ( FAST ) that provides flexible initial and boundary conditions to estimate fluxes using T-z profiles from the Willunga Super Science Site, a complex, but densely instrumented groundwater catchment in South Australia. T-z profiles from seven wells (ranging from high elevation to near sea level) were utilised, in addition to mean annual air temperatures at nearby weather stations to estimate boundary conditions, and thermal properties were estimated from down borehole geophysics. Temperature based flux estimates were 5 to 23 mm y − 1 , which are similar to those estimated using chloride mass balance. Stream thermal regimes are controlled by the interactions of external and internal energy fluxes with the water in the channel. Solar radiation is typically the dominant driver of stream water temperature, but streambed heat fluxes can be important in forested headwater streams. Past studies have presented seemingly disparate formulae for quantifying streambed heat advection from upwelling groundwater. This note details the sources of the differences in these alternative formulations. The equations illustrate the difficulties of attempting to isolate the thermal influence of groundwater-surface water interactions and highlight future research opportunities. Summer water temperatures are rising in many river systems in North America, and this warming trend is projected to intensify in the coming decades. Cold-water fish may alleviate thermal stress in summer by aggregating in discrete cold-water plumes that provide thermal refuge from high ambient river temperatures. Reliance on cold-water thermal refugia is expected to increase in a warming climate, and many river reaches already lack suitable thermal refugia as a result of an absence of thermal diversity. A comprehensive fish management strategy could proactively address this imminent threat to cold-water fish populations across North America by preserving existing thermal refugia, augmenting thermal anomalies to improve performance as refugia, and creating new thermal refugia in uniformly warm river reaches. We provide practical recommendations on how these measures can be accomplished based on insight derived from recent research focused on the Miramichi River, New Brunswick. Opportunities include limiting land use change, construction aggregate extraction (e.g. sand and gravel pits), and groundwater pumping/consumption. Existing thermal anomalies can be enhanced by controlling advective thermal mixing between cold-water tributaries and the river mainstem flow, installing riparian shading, and adding temporary structures for protection from avian predators. New refugia can be created by temporarily pumping groundwater to discrete points within the river during periods of thermal stress. Summary Streambed temperature and heat fluxes are important for aquatic habitats as well as in the development and improvement of water temperature models. In the present study, measured streambed temperatures at different depths were used as a tracer to predict the magnitude and direction of groundwater flow using an advection–conduction heat transport model. This analysis was carried out under different conditions, namely under natural surface water temperature conditions (i.e., as measured in the field), under steady-state conditions (e.g. under stream ice cover) and for conditions where the surface water temperatures followed a sinusoidal function. In Catamaran Brook, results from the advection–conduction numerical model showed good agreement between predicted and observed streambed temperatures with root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) ranging between 0.07 °C to 0.6 °C. A comparison of streambed fluxes showed that the heat flux by conduction was more important during the summer period for upwelling conditions (mean value 96 W m −2 at 25 °C), but was also present in winter (−20 W m −2 ). Variability in heat flux by conduction was also greater when the diel surface water temperature variability was high (e.g. range of 6 °C). The heat flux by advection varied between −120 and 145 W m −2 (for typical water temperatures and vertical flow conditions within Catamaran Brook, 0–25 °C and ±0.005 m h −1 ). Short-term heat exchange (diel) occurred within the thermally active depth, typically <0.7 m. The long-term annual streambed heat flux by conduction was also calculated and daily mean was generally less than ±11 W m −2 . While river water temperatures are a strong control on instream processes and aquatic ecosystems, monitoring networks for river water temperatures are often sparse. Despite recent advancements in water temperature modeling strategies, current models struggle to provide real-time and reach-specific predictions across broad spatial domains. We developed a physically-based water temperature model coupled to the National Water Model (NWM) to assess the potential for water temperature prediction to be incorporated into the NWM at the continental scale. Using model forcings and outputs from the NWM v2.1 retrospective, we evaluated the ability of four model configurations of increasing complexity to simulate hourly water temperatures in the forested headwaters of H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Oregon, USA during a six-week summer period. Our modeling framework, representing a first effort at pairing water temperature simulation with predictions from the NWM, suggests that the NWM can be leveraged to give insight into other water quality variables. • NWM-WT simulates hourly river water temperatures using National Water Model data. • Models of increasing complexity were calibrated and validated in a montane headwater catchment. • Select model configurations produced temperature predictions with RMSE values under 1 °C during the validation period. • Calibrated runs highlight the need to better constrain streambed and groundwater heat fluxes. Streams strongly influenced by groundwater discharge may serve as “climate refugia” for sensitive species in regions of increasingly marginal thermal conditions. The main goal of this study is to develop paired air and stream water annual temperature signal analysis techniques to elucidate the relative groundwater contribution to stream water and the effective groundwater flowpath depth. Groundwater discharge to streams attenuates surface water temperature signals, and this attenuation can be diagnostic of groundwater gaining systems. Additionally, discharge from shallow groundwater flowpaths can theoretically transfer lagged annual temperature signals from aquifer to stream water. Here we explore this concept using multi-year temperature records from 120 stream sites located across 18 mountain watersheds of Shenandoah National Park, VA, USA and a coastal watershed in Massachusetts, USA. Both areas constitute important cold-water habitat for native brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ). Observed annual temperature signals indicate a dominance of shallow groundwater discharge to streams in the National Park, in contrast to the coastal watershed that has strong, apparently deeper, groundwater influence. The average phase lag from air to stream signals in Shenandoah National Park is 11 d; however, extended lags of approximately 1 month were observed in a subset of streams. In contrast, the coastal stream has pronounced attenuation of annual temperature signals without notable phase lag. To better understand these observed differences in signal characteristics, analytical and numerical models are used to quantify mixing of the annual temperature signals of surface and groundwater. Simulations using a total heat budget numerical model indicate groundwater-induced annual temperature signal phase lags are likely to show greater downstream propagation than the related signal amplitude attenuation. The measurement of multi-seasonal paired air and water temperatures offers great promise toward understanding catchment processes and informing current cold-water habitat management at ecologically-relevant scales.
