The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) requires reliable estimates of the harvest of migratory game birds, including waterfowl, to effectively manage populations of these hunted species. The National Harvest Survey is an annual survey of hunters who purchase Canada's mandatory migratory game bird hunting permit, integrating information from a survey of hunting activity with information from a separate survey of species composition in the harvest. We used these survey data to estimate the number of birds harvested for each species and hunting activity metrics (e.g., number of active hunters, days spent hunting). The analytical methods used to generate these estimates have not changed since the survey was first designed in the early 1970s. We describe a new hierarchical Bayesian integrated model, which replaces the series of ratio estimators that comprised the old model. We are using this new model to generate estimates for migratory bird harvests as of the 2019–2020 hunting season, and to generate updated estimates for all earlier years. The hierarchical Bayesian model uses over‐dispersed Poisson distributions to model mean hunter activity and harvest (zero‐inflated Poisson and zero‐truncated Poisson, respectively). It also includes multinomial distributions to model some key components (e.g., variation in harvest across periods of the hunting season, the species composition of the harvest within each of those periods, the age and sex composition in the harvests of a given species). We estimated the parameters of the Poisson and the multinomial distributions for each year as random effects using first‐difference time‐series. This time‐series component allows the model to share information across years and reduces the sensitivity of the estimates to annual sampling noise. The new model estimates are generally very similar to those from the old model, particularly for the species that occur most commonly in the harvest, so the results do not suggest any major changes to harvest management decisions and regulations. Estimates for all species from the new model are more precise and less susceptible to annual sampling error, particularly for species that occur less commonly in the harvest (e.g., sea ducks, other species of conservation concern). This new model, with its hierarchical Bayesian framework, will also facilitate future improvements and elaborations, allowing the incorporation of prior information from the rich literature and knowledge in game bird management and biology. The European Birds Directive (EBD) prevents hunting during spring migration, primarily to facilitate birds' use of habitats before and during the prenuptial journey. In line with the EBD requirements, the hunting season for waterfowl in southern France was shortened by two months during February–March since the mid-1950s. However, consequences of such hunting bans for late winter habitat use have not been evaluated. We investigated a 55-years dataset from a major international wintering ground to assess whether the EBD-related changes in hunting legislation have led to increased regional teal Anas crecca numbers during late winter. Teal abundance in the Camargue during late winter increased over the last decades: the ban on hunting in February was the best predictor of teal numbers during that month, leading to a sudden 50% increase in relative abundance. In March a more gradual temporal increase since the mid-1960 was instead recorded. Whether the increase in teal during late winter resulted from locally wintering birds or those from elsewhere stopping in the Camargue cannot be discerned. Nonetheless, the increase in teal numbers supports the basis for the EBD, in that a ban on hunting during late winter is associated with a greater use of habitats during this crucial part of the annual cycle, especially in February. The Evros delta is one of the most important wetlands for wintering waterfowl in Greece and the most popular among waterfowl hunters. This study addresses hunting activity and harvest while also investigating the relationship between weather conditions and hunting activity to suggest ways of improving waterfowl management. We counted wintering waterfowl and hunter numbers, and conducted hunter bag surveys during December-February over four hunting seasons. We calculated a 10-day goose and duck Preferential Shooting Index (PSI), which is the ratio of observed number of shot birds to the number of birds expected to have been shot if the birds were shot in proportion to their availability. Common Teal, Mallard and Greater White-fronted Goose were the most abundant species both in the field and in hunter bags. The mean number of hunters/day was 99.9, with each one shooting on average 2.5 birds/day. The overall waterfowl harvested accounted for 1.3% of the total waterfowl population. For geese this proportion was six times higher (8.7%), while for ducks alone and protected species was 1.2% and 1.4% respectively. Geese were shot more often than expected (PSI 6.55), while ducks and protected species were shot according to their availability (PSI 0.86 and 1.02, respectively). Wind speed, precipitation and geese number in the field were the best predictors of overall harvest and number of hunters. To reduce goose overshooting and the probability of protected species being accidentally shot, we suggest habitat management actions for the geese feeding areas and hunters' awareness raising. Abstract: This paper discusses the Late Natufian avifaunal remains from Shubayqa 1, a Late Epipalaeolithic site situated in north‐east Jordan. The site has produced an exceptionally large and well‐preserved assemblage of bird bones recovered from a substantial midden deposit, and from the analysis of this material, we argue that there is evidence for en masse hunting of seasonally migrating waterfowl during the occupation of the site. The abundance of waterfowl and the hunting strategies employed to capture this prey must have resulted in a plentiful supply of meat, enabling the choicest parts of the birds to be quickly removed from the rest of the carcass. The tibiotarsus bones were also frequently taken back to the habitation site for use as a raw material, possibly for bead manufacture. Extensive hunting of the birds was not a result of resource pressure as often argued; instead, people chose to take advantage of a particularly abundant prey population during the winter months. This evidence casts a critical light on the suggestion that population growth and environmental change forced late Pleistocene hunter‐gatherers in the Levant to expand their subsistence base to include lower‐ranked prey species. Our data also have implications for the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the landscape. The presence of a few bones of birds other than waterfowl suggests these species had minimal importance to the diet of the inhabitants and bones from diurnal raptors may have been collected to be used in decorative items or as tools rather than reflecting the hunting of these species for food. Hunting can potentially affect population size, age composition, sex-ratio, behaviour and distribution of natural populations, and understanding its impacts is a prerequisite to manage quarry species sustainably. Harvest management relies strongly on the existence of both strictly regulated hunting efforts and efficient monitoring of populations, their demography and harvest. These conditions are rarely met in practice., For the Svalbard-breeding population of the pink-footed goose Anser brachyrhynchus, an internationally coordinated adaptive harvest management framework enables a flyway-based assessment of harvest impact. Based on 25 years of population assessment and harvest data, we evaluate the differential impact of harvest along the migration corridor of the population., The analysis reveals that (i) total harvest and harvest rate (proportion of the population killed by hunting) have increased substantially in recent years, (ii) compared to adult geese, juveniles were overrepresented in the hunting bag by a factor of 3·7, (iii) the proportion of juveniles in the hunting bag differed between the two countries (Norway and Denmark) with an open season, and was more than twice as high in the former compared to the latter, and (iv) the increase in harvest rate seemed to be driven by increased hunting mortality of juvenile birds, with no clear impact on the growth rate of the population. However, this may partly relate to the transient dynamics and population inertia commonly seen in long-lived species such as geese, and a 3-year consecutive decline towards the end of our study period might be the first signs of an impending decline., Synthesis and applications. Our findings highlight that the impact of harvest varies along the migration corridor and between age classes of a single species and suggest that allocation of hunting effort in time and space is important to optimise harvest. Waterfowl ingest residual lead or nontoxic shotshell pellets while foraging for food in agricultural and other habitats. The Chenier Plain of Louisiana and Texas and the Texas Mid-Coast provide important habitats for wintering waterfowl, yet these regions are characterized by long traditions of waterfowl and other game-bird hunting, which potentially exposes waterfowl to historical lead pellets remaining in the environment. Recent evidence suggests that migrant and resident waterfowl within the Chenier Plain and Texas Mid-Coast regions continue to ingest lead pellets despite strict shotshell regulations. Thus, we randomly collected and radiographed soil cores (10-cm diameter and depth) from production and idled ricelands ( n = 500 from each type) in the Chenier Plain ( n = 760) and Texas Mid-Coast ( n = 240) during November 2013 to estimate density of lead and nontoxic pellets in important waterfowl habitats of these regions. Across all regions and field types, we detected only one lead pellet and zero nontoxic pellets, despite 100% detection of known numbers of pellets in test samples. The single lead pellet was recovered from a production rice field in the Chenier Plain, yielding an estimated density of 1,019 lead pellets/ha (95% CI: 0-3,034) in this sampling region. Failure to detect lead pellets in other regions and nontoxic pellets across all regions precluded estimation but suggested pellet densities < 3,000 pellets/ha. We speculate that regular soil tillage of ricelands helps incorporate pellets into the soil, rendering all or most unavailable to our sampling and foraging by waterfowl. We recommend that future research estimate densities of lead pellets in areas where they may be concentrated (e.g., near permanent hunting blinds), where dove hunting is prevalent, and in other heavily hunted waterfowl habitats along the Gulf Coast (e.g., coastal marsh). With increasing numbers of many herbivorous waterfowl species, often foraging on farmland, the conflict with agriculture has intensified. One popular management tool is to scare birds off the land, often in association with shooting. However, the energy costs of flying are considerably higher than those of resting. Therefore, when birds fly off after a disturbance, they use extra energy that subsequently needs to be compensated., We used the white-fronted goose Anser albifrons, the most common (grass-eating) goose wintering in western Europe, as a model species. We measured flight durations by high-frequency accelerometer recordings over 2 × 24 h in nine focal geese that were only incidentally disturbed. We also made direct observations on these days to determine whether the flight durations were reliably recorded. Using both a simple and a more realistic model of the energy balance, we calculated the extra grass consumption resulting from additional intentional disturbances., On average, the geese flew daily 2 × 323 s (from and to their roosting sites at 3200 m) and furthermore took to the air 5·3 times during a day (and 1·9 times a night). Multiplied with the average flight durations of 195 s, this gives a total flying time of almost 0·6 h day−1 and a total foraging time of 7·4 h day−1. The extra foraging time needed to compensate for additional intentional disturbances strongly depends on the frequency of such disturbances and the following flight duration. If, for example, flights when intentionally disturbed are twice as long (2 × 195 s), the extra foraging time will be 3·7% day−1 (2·3-3·2% day−1 in the more realistic model) for each intentional disturbance, and the geese will no longer be able to cover their energy requirements when intentionally disturbed six times per day., Synthesis and applications. Recent experiments suggest that geese have to be scared frequently in order to reduce goose visitation to particular fields. With an intentional disturbance rate, for example, of five times a day, the birds' compensation for the increased energy expenditure will lead to a higher overall consumption of grass of 11·5-16% day−1. ABSTRACT Many sea ducks are captured during wing molt at intertidal areas; however, to study the breeding ecology of some species, researchers need to capture them on streams and rivers, which are often flowing with high water. In fast-flowing and deep water, wading streams during net set-up and extraction of birds is impossible to complete safely. Between 1995 and 2013, we captured 720 adult and 241 hatch-year harlequin ducks ( Histrionicus histrionicus) on 37 streams in eastern and western North America. We used a mist net extended across the stream with modified riggings that allowed above-water retrieval of captured birds without technicians entering the stream. This method can be used across deep, fast water that is not wadable; requires equipment that is compact and easily transported; is suitable for remote areas; can be operated by a crew of 4-6 people; and has a low risk of injury to the birds. Care must be taken when using this method to capture large numbers of ducks simultaneously because it becomes difficult to keep the birds above the fast water. This capture method could be used for other ducks, and with different mesh sizes could also be used for other birds, such as American dippers ( Cinclus americanus) and spotted sandpipers ( Actitis macularius), at these inland locations. The mobility of this capture method means that species and individuals that are not of interest can be avoided by orienting the net to a horizontal position to allow non-target species to pass by unhindered. © 2015 The Wildlife Society. The Light Goose Conservation Order (LGCO) was initiated in 1999 to reduce mid-continent populations of light geese (lesser snow geese Chen caerulescens and Ross's geese C. rossi). However, concern about potential for LGCO activities (i.e. hunting activities) to negatively impact non-target waterfowl species during spring migration in the Rainwater Basin (RWB) of Nebraska prompted agency personnel to limit the number of hunt days each week and close multiple public wetlands to LGCO activities entirely. To evaluate the effects of the LGCO in the RWB, we quantified waterfowl density at wetlands open and closed to LGCO hunting and recorded all hunter encounters during springs 2011 and 2012. We encountered a total of 70 hunting parties on 22 study wetlands, with over 90% of these encounters occurring during early season when the majority of waterfowl used the RWB region. We detected greater overall densities of dabbling ducks Anas spp., as well as for mallards A. platyrhynchos and northern pintails A. acuta on wetlands closed to the LGCO. We detected no effects of hunt day in the analyses of dabbling duck densities. We detected no differences in mean weekly dabbling duck densities among wetlands open to hunting, regardless of weekly or cumulative hunting encounter frequency throughout early season. Additionally, hunting category was not a predictor for the presence of greater white-fronted geese Anser albifrons in a logistic regression model. Given that dabbling duck densities were greater on wetlands closed to hunting, providing wetlands free from hunting disturbance as refugia during the LGCO remains an important management strategy at migration stopover sites. However, given that we did not detect an effect of hunt day or hunting frequency on dabbling duck density, our results suggest increased hunting frequency at sites already open to hunting would likely have minimal impacts on the distribution of non-target waterfowl species using the region for spring staging. Waterfowl hunting product manufacturers have determined that a market exists for waterfowl hunting videos. Viewing these videos could have meaningful effects on hunters who watch them. We conducted a content analysis of three waterfowl hunting videos. The most frequently spoken word was “kill” for two of the videos and “ducks” for the third video. Less than 5% of each movie was attributed to shooting, and when hunters did shoot, the average length of each shooting scene was 1.77 seconds. There were significant differences among videos in the number of shots taken per scene and number of birds harvested per scene. Overall, success rates in the videos differed from the average success rates for Illinois hunters. We stress the importance of understanding the influence of media on development among hunters and discuss how effects of media may impact wildlife agencies in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to assess the degree of lead contamination in mallards in the Czech Republic as a result of using lead shots for wildfowling. Two sites used for mallard hunting were chosen, namely a flood-control reservoir in Moravia and a small fishpond in Bohemia. Lead concentrations were determined in the tissues of 20 mallards (Arias platyrhynchos) raised at those standing open water sites (n = 10 at each site) and killed there during the autumn hunting season with a steel shot. Control groups were made up of 20 mallards from the same breeding facility as experimental groups but raised in an enclosure without access to water (n = 10 at each site). Lead concentrations were determined in selected tissues (breast muscle, heart, liver, gizzard, kidney, feathers - quill base, lung, brain and humerus) by high resolution continuum source atomic absorption spectrometry. The results showed elevated lead concentrations in all tissues of mallards compared with control in the reservoir in Southern Moravia. The highest lead concentrations (mg/kg) were found in the humerus (14.254 ± 4.525 and 5.083 ± 0.748 for experimental and control mallards, respectively). In contrast, lead concentrations in mallards from small fishpond in Southern Bohemia were lower compared to control. Similarly, the highest lead concentrations were found in the humerus (2.219 ± 0.349 and 8.930 ± 1.012 for experimental and control mallards, respectively). Waterfowl are a valued resource in Mississippi and throughout most of the United States. There are few economic impact assessments for waterfowl hunting. In this study, assessments in Mississippi were derived from waterfowl hunter expenditure data collected by a self-administered mail questionnaire for the 2005-2006 hunting season. Hunter expenditures obtained from a mail survey (n = 1,500, 51% response rate) were used along with participation rates in days in the Impact Analysis for Planning (IMPLAN) system software to determine state economic impacts. Adjusted economic impacts supporting the economy totaled $86.8 million (2009 USD).Wildlife managers in the United States need to focus on this valued resource by using more accurate information from state-based surveys, along with ecological assessments, to facilitate prioritization of wildlife management decisions aimed at sustaining it. We studied harvest of Ross's geese in North America by examining recoveries from 30,774 Ross's geese marked from 1989 to 2001 in Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary (QMGMBS), Nunavut, in Canada's central arctic. Recoveries reported by hunters in North America provided information about timing and location of harvest for 2,152 birds. Banded Ross's geese were shot and reported mostly from the U.S. (68%) and Canada (30%), but also Mexico (2%) during the study. From 1989 to 2001, there have been eastward shifts in distribution of recoveries from the Pacific Flyway to the midcontinent in the U.S., and from Alberta to Saskatchewan in Canada. Harvest in Canada was concentrated in southern Saskatchewan (85%), whereas U.S. distribution of recoveries was much broader with most recoveries from the Pacific (49%), Central (39%), and Mississippi (12%) Flyways. Continental harvest of Ross's geese began to increase in 1994 concurrent with liberalization of hunting regulations in the Canadian Prairie provinces and the Central and Mississippi Flyways, and the increased propensity of U.S. hunters, who now account for 90% of the continental harvest, to hunt outside of the U.S. Harvest from further liberalization of hunting regulations for light geese as part of the U.S. conservation order has accounted for ⩽15% of continental harvest annually since 1998. Nevertheless, increased harvest of Ross's geese from the 1989 hunting season (∼8,000 birds) to the 2001 season (∼90,000 birds) best accounted for annual variation in adult survival, but was unrelated to juvenile survival. Survival of adults was >0.91 before 1994 but declined to ∼0.80 by 1998–2000 hunting seasons. Juvenile survival was relatively stable among years and ranged from 0.33 to 0.41. We found that mortality probability of adults marked with neckbands was 1.94 to 2.62 times higher than for adults without neckbands, but only 1.08 to 1.13 times higher in respective groups of juvenile Ross's geese. Thus, we advise against use of neckbands for estimation of survival in Ross's geese. The similarity and mixing of Ross's geese with snow geese in western and central North America are impediments to separate harvest management of each species. However, geographical adjustment of harvest regulations for Ross's geese in Canada is advised, with the dual objective of reducing midcontinent snow geese while conserving populations of Ross's geese on traditional winter areas in the Pacific Flyway. We recommend Ross's geese continue to be marked with legbands in QMGMBS, their principal breeding range, at least as long as liberal harvest regulations remain in place for reduction of midcontinent snow geese.
