Remote sensing precipitation data have the characteristics of wide coverage and revealing spatiotemporal information, but their spatial resolution is low. The accuracy of the data is obviously different in different study areas and hydrometeorological conditions. This study evaluated four precipitation products in the Yellow River basin from 2001 to 2019, constructed the optimal combined product, conducted downscaling with various machine algorithms, and performed corrections using meteorological station precipitation data to analyze the spatiotemporal trends of precipitation. The results showed that (1) GPM and MSWEP had the best four evaluation indicators, with R2 values of 0.93 and 0.90, respectively, and the smallest FSE and RMSE, with a BIAS close to 0. A high-precision mixed precipitation dataset, GPM-MSWEP, was constructed. (2) Among the three methods, the downscaling results of DFNN showed higher accuracy. (3) The results, after correction with GWR, could more effectively enhance the accuracy of the data. (4) Precipitation in the Yellow River Basin showed a decreasing trend in January, September, and December, while it exhibited an increasing trend in other months and seasons, with 2002 and 2016 being points of abrupt change. Hydrological modeling realism is a central research question in hydrological studies. However, it is still a common practice to calibrate hydrological models using streamflow as a single hydrological variable, which can lead to large parameter uncertainty in hydrological simulations. To address this issue, this study employed a multi-variable calibration framework to reduce parameter uncertainty in a glacierized catchment. The current study employed multi-variable calibration using three different calibration schemes to calibrate a glacio-hydrological model (namely the FLEXG) in northern Sweden. The schemes included using only gauged streamflow data (scheme 1), using satellite snow cover area (SCA) derived from MODIS data (scheme 2), and using both gauged streamflow data and satellite SCA data as references for calibration (scheme 3) of the FLEXG model. This study integrated the objective functions of satellite-derived SCA and gauged streamflow into one criterion for the FLEXG model calibration using a weight-based approach. Our results showed that calibrating the FLEXG model based on solely satellite SCA data (from MODIS) produced an accurate simulation of SCA but poor simulation of streamflow. In contrast, calibrating the FLEXG model based on the measured streamflow data resulted in minimum error for streamflow simulation but high error for SCA simulation. The promising results were achieved for glacio-hydrological simulation with acceptable accuracy for simulation of both streamflow and SCA, when both streamflow and SCA data were used for calibration of FLEXG. Drought is a natural disaster that occurs globally and can damage the environment, disrupt agricultural production and cause large economic losses. The accurate prediction of drought can effectively reduce the impacts of droughts. Deep learning methods have shown promise in drought prediction, with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) being particularly effective in handling spatial information. In this study, we employed a deep learning approach to predict drought in the Fenhe River (FHR) basin, taking into account the meteorological conditions of surrounding regions. We used the daily SAPEI (Standardized Antecedent Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) as the drought evaluation index. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CNN model in predicting drought events 1~10 days in advance. We evaluated the predictions made by the model; the average Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between the predicted and true values for the next 10 days was 0.71. While the prediction accuracy slightly decreased with longer prediction lengths, the model remained stable and effective in predicting heavy drought events that are typically difficult to predict. Additionally, key meteorological variables for drought predictions were identified, and we found that training the CNN model with these key variables led to higher prediction accuracy than training it with all variables. Under global warming, flooding has become one of the most destructive natural disasters along the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which significantly jeopardizes the construction and ongoing stability of the CPEC. The assessment of regional flood potential is, therefore, crucial for effective flood prevention and relief measures. In light of this, our study applied MIKE 11 hydrodynamic model for the Indus River Basin of Pakistan to achieve a comprehensive analysis of the flood-affected locations and depths under typical scenarios. The flood risk zones along the CPEC were evaluated using the indicator system method in conjunction with the combination weighting method. The results show that the hydrodynamic model has a Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.86, allowing for the investigation of floods at more precise temporal and spatial scales. Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan Provinces are the main inundation areas under a 100-year flood scenario, with inundation depths ranging from 1 to 4 m. The coastal regions of Sindh and Hafizabad in Punjab witnessed the most severe floods, with maximum inundation depths exceeding 8 m. Flooding predominantly impacts the southeastern region of the CPEC. The medium- to high-risk zones comprise 25.56% of the region, while high-risk areas constitute 4.18%. Particularly, the eastern and southern regions of Punjab, along with the central and southern regions of Sindh, have been pinpointed as high-risk areas, primarily due to their dense population and riverine characteristics. River transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean is a crucial but poorly quantified regional carbon cycle component. Large uncertainties remaining on the riverine DOC export from China, as well as its trend and drivers of change, have challenged the reconciliation between atmosphere‐based and land‐based estimates of China's land carbon sink. Here, we harmonized a large database of riverine in‐situ measurements and applied a random forest model, to quantify riverine DOC fluxes (FDOC) and DOC concentrations (CDOC) in rivers across China. This study proposes the first DOC modeling effort capable of reproducing well the magnitude of riverine CDOC and FDOC, as well as its trends, on a monthly scale and with a much wider spatial distribution over China compared to previous studies that mainly focused on annual‐scale estimates and large rivers. Results show that over the period 2001–2015, the average CDOC was 2.25 ± 0.45 mg/L and average FDOC was 4.04 ± 1.02 Tg/year. Simultaneously, we found a significant increase in FDOC (+0.044 Tg/year2, p =.01), but little change in CDOC (−0.001 mg/L/year, p >.10). Although the trend in CDOC is not significant at the country scale, it is significantly increasing in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin (0.005 and 0.013 mg/L/year, p <.05) while significantly decreasing in the Yellow River Basin and Southwest Rivers Basin (−0.043 and −0.014 mg/L/year, p =.01). Changes in hydrology, play a stronger role than direct impacts of anthropogenic activities in determining the spatio‐temporal variability of FDOC and CDOC across China. However, and in contrast with other basins, the significant increase in CDOC in the Yangtze River Basin and Huaihe River Basin is attributable to direct anthropogenic activities. Given the dominance of hydrology in driving FDOC, the increase in FDOC is likely to continue under the projected increase in river discharge over China resulting from a future wetter climate. Crop production security is an essential guarantee for the prosperity of country and the well‐being of people. In the context of frequent occurrence of extreme weather events, how to comprehensively evaluate the risk of multiple hazards and quantitatively describe spatial differences will be one of the significant topics in agricultural disaster mitigation. In this study, based on the gridded meteorological data and other datasets (crop, socioeconomic, disaster loss, and actual planting location) from 2000 to 2020, multihazard risk model for different growth period was built to assess the comprehensive risk of winter wheat in the upper Huaihe River basin (UHRB), China. The conclusions were as follows: (a) The spatial distribution of continuous rain risk increased gradually from north to south; the area of the highest lodging risk was located in the east; the spatial trend of drought risk was the highest in the south and the lowest in the northeast. (b) The weights of continuous rain, lodging, and drought disasters were 41, 31, and 28%, respectively, which indicated that winter wheat in UHRB was most affected by continuous rain during the harvest period. (c) The spatial distribution of comprehensive disaster risk assessment showed that the higher risk areas were located in the central and southern parts (Huaibin, Linquan, Luoshan). After verification by historical disasters information, the results are credible, providing a concrete scientific basis for implementing regional agricultural disaster response measures. The management and conservation of lakes should be conducted in the context of catchments because lakes collect water and materials from their upstream catchments. Thus, the datasets of catchment-level characteristics are essential for limnology studies. Lakes are widely spread on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), with a total lake area exceeding 50 000 km 2 , accounting for more than half of the total lake area in China. However, there has been no dataset of lake-catchment characteristics in this region to date. This study constructed the first dataset of lake-catchment characteristics for 1525 lakes with areas from 0.2 to 4503 km 2 on the TP. Considering that large lakes block the transport of materials from upstream to downstream, lake catchments are delineated in two ways: the full catchment, which refers to the full upstream-contributing area of each lake, and the inter-lake catchments, which are obtained by excluding the contributing areas of upstream lakes larger than 0.2 km 2 from the full catchment. There are six categories (i.e., lake body, topography, climate, land cover/use, soil and geology, and anthropogenic activity) and a total of 721 attributes in the dataset. Besides multi-year average attributes, the time series of 16 hydrological and meteorological variables are extracted, which can be used to drive or validate lumped hydrological models and machine learning models for hydrological simulation. The dataset contains fundamental information for analyzing the impact of catchment-level characteristics on lake properties, which on the one hand, can deepen our understanding of the drivers of lake environment change, and on the other hand can be used to predict the water and sediment properties in unsampled lakes based on limited samples. This provides exciting opportunities for lake studies in a spatially explicit context and promotes the development of landscape limnology on the TP. Amongst the impacts of climate change, those arising from extreme hydrological events are expected to cause the greatest impacts. To assess the changes in temperature and precipitation and their impacts on the discharge in the upper Yangtze Basin from pre-industrial to the end of 21st century, four hydrological models were integrated with four global climate models. Results indicated that mean discharge was simulated to increase slightly for all hydrological models forced by all global climate models during 1771–1800 and 1871–1900 relative to the 1971–2000 reference period, whereas the change directions in mean discharge were not consistent among the four global climate models during 2070–2099, with increases from HadGEM2-ES and MIROC5, and decreases from GFDL-ESM2M and IPSL-CM5A-LR. Additionally, our results indicated that decreases in precipitation may always result in the decrease in mean discharge, but increases in precipitation did not always lead to increases in discharge due to high temperature rise. The changes in extreme flood events with different return intervals were also explored. These extreme events were projected to become more intense and frequent in the future, which could have potential devastating impacts on the society and ecosystem in this region. Highlights • Open-access climate datasets were evaluated by hydrological simulation in Ethiopia. • CFSR air temperature data yielded almost identical performance to measured data. • Among three open-access precipitation data, CHIRPS had the best performance. Abstract Precipitation and air temperature are key drivers of watershed models. Currently there are many open-access gridded precipitation and air temperature datasets at different spatial and temporal resolutions over global or quasi-global scale. Motivated by the scarcity and substantial temporal and spatial gaps in ground measurements in Africa, this study evaluated the performance of three open-access precipitation datasets (i.e. CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data), TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and CFSR (Climate Forecast System Reanalysis)) and one air temperature dataset (CFSR) in driving Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model in simulation of daily and monthly streamflow in the upper Gilgel Abay Basin, Ethiopia. The "best" available measurements of precipitation and air temperature from sparse gauge stations were also used to drive SWAT model and the results were compared with those using open-access datasets. After a comprehensive comparison of a total of eight model scenarios with different combinations of precipitation and air temperature inputs, we draw the following conclusions: (1) using measured precipitation from even sparse available stations consistently yielded better performance in streamflow simulation than using all three open-access precipitation datasets; (2) using CFSR air temperature yielded almost identical performance in streamflow simulation to using measured air temperature from gauge stations; (3) among the three open-access precipitation, overall CHIRPS yielded best performance. These results suggested that the CHIRPS precipitation available at high spatial resolution (0.05°) together with CFSR air temperature can be a promising alternative open-access data source for streamflow simulation in this data-scarce area in the case of limited access to desirable gauge data. Using dense soil moisture (SM) measurements in the upper Huai River basin of China, this study evaluated the spatial patterns of L-band satellite-based SM products, including Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) L3, Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) L3 and the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) SM products. The mean difference (MD), root mean squared error (RMSE), unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) and Pearson correlation coefficient (R), were used in the evaluation. The evaluation results presented that SMAP and ESA CCI products can well capture the temporal variation of SM at single points quite well, with average R values of 0.51 and 0.46, respectively. And SMAP had the highest overall accuracy among the three satellite-based products in study area. We also analyzed the correlations between the four accuracy indexes and six environmental factors including the proportions of five land use/land cover types (i.e. water bodies, paddy fields, construction land, dryland and forest) and the average NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in 2016 in each grid. Analysis showed that the proportions of paddy fields and water bodies in each grid had significant positive correlations with MD, RMSE and ubRMSE, while NDVI, and the proportions of dryland and construction land had significant negative correlations with these three indexes. The significant correlations between the accuracy of SMAP, SMOS and ESA CCI SM products and environmental factors indicate that there exist systematic biases in these products, which can provide valuable insights into algorithm improvements. Precipitation is often the most important input data in hydrological models when simulating streamflow. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a widely used hydrological model, only makes use of data from one precipitation gauge station that is nearest to the centroid of each subbasin, which is eventually corrected using the elevation band method. This leads in general to inaccurate representation of subbasin precipitation input data, particularly in catchments with complex topography. To investigate the impact of different precipitation inputs on the SWAT model simulations in Alpine catchments, 13 years (1998–2010) of daily precipitation data from four datasets including OP (Observed precipitation), IDW (Inverse Distance Weighting data), CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data) and TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) has been considered. Both model performances (comparing simulated and measured streamflow data at the catchment outlet) as well as parameter and prediction uncertainties have been quantified. For all three subbasins, the use of elevation bands is fundamental to match the water budget. Streamflow predictions obtained using IDW inputs are better than those obtained using the other datasets in terms of both model performance and prediction uncertainty. Models using the CHIRPS product as input provide satisfactory streamflow estimation, suggesting that this satellite product can be applied to this data-scarce Alpine region. Comparing the performance of SWAT models using different precipitation datasets is therefore important in data-scarce regions. This study has shown that, precipitation is the main source of uncertainty, and different precipitation datasets in SWAT models lead to different best estimate ranges for the calibrated parameters. This study conducted a comprehensive evaluation of three satellite precipitation products (TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) 3B42, CMORPH (the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Morphing algorithm), and PERSIANN (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks)) using data from 52 rain gauge stations over the Meichuan watershed, which is a representative watershed of the Poyang Lake Basin in China. All the three products were compared and evaluated during a 9-year period at different spatial (grid and watershed) and temporal (daily, monthly, and annual) scales. The results showed that at daily scale, CMORPH had the best performance with coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.61 at grid scale and 0.74 at watershed scale. For precipitation intensities larger than or equal to 25 mm, RMSE% of CMORPH and TRMM 3B42 were less than 50%, indicating CMORPH and TRMM 3B42 might be useful for hydrological applications at daily scale. At monthly and annual temporal scales, TRMM 3B42 had the best performances, with high R2 ranging from 0.93 to 0.99, and thus was deemed to be reliable and had good potential for hydrological applications at monthly and annual scales. Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) is one of the most popular global high resolution satellite-based precipitation products with a goal of measuring precipitation over the oceans and tropics. However, in recent years, the TRMM mission has come to an end. Its successor, Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission was launched to measure the earth's precipitation structure, with an aim to improve upon the TRMM project. Both of the precipitation products have their own strengths and weaknesses in resolution, accuracy, and availability. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hydrologic utilization of the TRMM and GPM products in a humid basin of China. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) 3B42V7 generally outperforms 3B42V6 in terms of hydrologic performance. Meanwhile, 3B42RTV7 significantly outperforms 3B42RTV6, and showed close performance with the bias-adjusted TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) products. (2) The GPM showed better agreement with gauge observation than the TMPA products with lower RB and higher correlation coefficient (CC) values at different time scales. (3) The VIC hydrological model generally outperformed the XAJ hydrological model with lower RB, higher Nash–Sutcliffe Coefficient of Efficiency (NSCE) and CC values; though the 3B42RTV6 and 3B42RTV7 showed higher CC values in simulating the streamflow hydrograph by using the VIC and XAJ hydrological models. It can be found that the conceptual hydrological model was enough for the hydrologic evaluation of TRMM and GPM IMERG satellite-based precipitation in a humid basin of China. Glacio-hydrological modeling is a key task for assessing the influence of snow and glaciers on water resources, essential for water resources management. The present study aims to enhance a conceptual hydrological model (namely Glacial Snow Melt (GSM)) by data-driven and swarm computing for enhancing the accuracy of rainfall runoff prediction. The proposed framework combines the conceptual hydrological model (i.e. GSM) with the time series predictor model (SVR) and optimization-driven parameter tuning of the firefly algorithm (SVR-FFA). This integration uniquely captures the complex interplay between meteorological variables, glacier processes, and hydrological responses. Applying the hybrid framework proved better results than the standalone GSM and ordinary SVR in simulating runoff time series. The performance of the proposed conceptual integrated metaheuristic-based framework (W-SG-SVR-FFA) demonstrated several enhancements over the standalone GSM model. During the calibration (validation) period, the evaluation metric coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.77 (0.77) for the standalone GSM model and 0.98 (0.91) for the W-SG-SVR-FFA model. The Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE) values were 0.81 (0.77) and 0.97 (0.87), respectively. Applying the method in glacierized catchments underscores its importance in areas undergoing swift climate change and glacial melting. Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia, and its lake outflow is the source of the Blue Nile River that provides vital water resources for many livelihoods and downstream/international stakeholders. Therefore, it is essential to quantify and monitor the water balance of Lake Tana. However, Lake Tana is poorly gauged, with more than 50% of Lake Tana Basin being ungauged from in-situ measurements, making it difficult to quantify the lake inflow from surrounding basins. The lack of in-situ measurements highlights the need for the innovative application of satellite remote sensing. This study explores how freely accessible satellite remote sensing can be used to complement routine weather data to quantify the water balance of Lake Tana and its surrounding catchments. This study particularly investigates whether the outflow from Lake Tana can be estimated with sufficient accuracy as the residual of the lake water balance. Monthly inflow into lake was computed as the total runoff from the surrounding catchments; the runoff was estimated as the residual of the land-based catchment water balance using satellite precipitation improved with an integrated downscaling-calibration procedure, satellite evapotranspiration, and a correction term for changes in land total storage (soil moisture storage and deep percolation). The outflow from Lake Tana was estimated as the residual of lake water balance by combining satellite-based lake precipitation, changes in water storage, and lake inflow with estimated lake evaporation. Evaluation using limited available measurements showed that estimated annual runoff for two gauged subbasins agreed well with measurements, with differences within 4%. The estimated annual outflow from Lake Tana was also close to measured outflow, with a difference of 12%. This study investigated the applicability and performance of a hydrological model (namely FLEXG) for simulating streamflow in boreal catchment, exemplified by the representative Krycklan catchment. The FLEXG simulated daily streamflow for the whole catchment and its sub-catchments. The Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE) and Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) demonstrated favorable model performance during the calibration period (KGE = 0.88 and NSE = 0.75) and the subsequent validation (KGE = 0.81 and NSE = 0.63) period for the Krycklan catchment. Notably, a high degree of congruence was observed across eight sub-catchments, with KGE values consistently exceeding the threshold of 0.7 during both calibration and validation periods. These findings underscore the FLEXG model's aptitude for simulating streamflow within boreal catchments, as evidenced by its ability to capture seasonal patterns across the catchment. Additionally, regression analysis was conducted to examine the intricate relationships between model parameters and varied catchment characteristics. These catchment characteristics were identified as pivotal factors influencing streamflow modelling in the study region. Specifically, it was established that catchment size shows a negative correlation with the splitter D (R2 = 0.7), a parameter intimately associated with both fast and slow recession periods. The proportion of forest cover was negatively correlated with the slow response reservoir recession coefficient, K f (R2 = 0.57), whereas the proportion of wetland cover displayed a positive correlation with K s (R2 = 0.54). • Error estimation and data fusion of gridded precipitation by TC and MTC were studied. • MTC produces more consistent error estimation results with gauge data than TC. • TC-based methods are effective in data fusion and is comparable with BMA and RF-MEP. • Zero rainfall replacement has an effect on error estimation but not on data fusion. Error estimation and data fusion are critical to improving the accuracy of global model- and satellite-based precipitation products for practical applications. However, they face challenges over vast areas of the world due to limited ground observations. Triple collocation (TC) method can overcome this limitation and provide an efficient way for error estimation without the "ground truth" and thus also for data fusion, by leveraging multi-source observations and model outputs, which have been increasingly available in recent years. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive study on error estimation and data fusion of a number of global gridded precipitation products over the Yangtze River basin from 2015 to 2018 using TC and multiplicative TC (MTC) methods. We use three satellite-based precipitation products such as the IMERG Final (IMERG-F), PERSIANN-CDR (PCDR) and SM2RAIN-ASCAT (SM2R), and one reanalysis dataset ERA5 which contains precipitation estimates. They were grouped into two TC triplets based on different combinations: IMERG-F + SM2R + ERA5 and PCDR + SM2R + ERA5. For performance evaluation, the TC-based error estimation methods were compared to the traditional method using rain gauge data, and the TC-based data fusion methods were compared with two widely-used data fusion methods Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) and Random Forest based MErging Procedure (RF-MEP). Results showed that ERA5 had the best performance with the largest correlation coefficient (CC , 0.435), while PCDR had the worst accuracy with the smallest CC (0.304) and the largest absolute relative bias (RB , 0.365). TC tended to underestimate the root mean square error (RMSE) with respect to the traditional gauged-based method, but MTC showed a consistent result owing to the employment of a multiplicative error model. The performance of TC-based data fusion methods had no significant difference from BMA and RF-MEP. All data fusion results were better than the original triplets, as the mean CC value increased from 0.38 to 0.47 and the mean RMSE decreased from 15.0 to 13.5 mm/day. In addition, we found that the zero value replacement in MTC had great influence on error estimation, while had limited impacts on data fusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
