Alluvial fans are an important land resource with agricultural potential in Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The spatiotemporal variation in land use/cover is an important indicator to understand the value of alluvial fans and protect and make scientific use of such fans. In this study, the spatiotemporal characteristics of land use/cover are determined by analysing the land use/cover changes of alluvial fans in the Lhasa River Basin (LRB) at different times, counties/districts, altitudes, and gradients. Results show that the area of cultivated land and the artificial land provided by alluvial fans for LRB has continuously increased. In 2000, 2010, and 2020, 17.72%, 21.84%, and 24.17% of cultivated land and 7.89%, 7.51%, and 25.24% of artificial land in LRB were provided by alluvial fans, respectively. At all altitudes and slopes, cultivated land and artificial land are increasing but the increasing part is basically due to the massive loss of grassland. The spatiotemporal changes in all land use/cover types of alluvial fans were dominated by human activities, although they were also influenced by natural factors to some degree. Pesticide pollution has been one serious ecological and environmental issue due to its wide application, high toxicity, and complex environmental behavior. The fugacity model has been widely used to quantify biogeochemical cycles of pesticides due to its clear compartments, simple structure, and easy-accessible data. However, the lack of detailed hydrological processes limits its application for large and heterogeneous watershed. In present study, a new framework was proposed through integration of hydrological processes of SWAT and pesticide fate of fugacity model, and was applied into a typical watershed in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, China. The results showed that surface runoff, soil erosion, and percolation varied spatiotemporally, which highlighted the importance of considering regional and seasonal heterogeneity of pesticide transport variables in the fugacity model. The amount of dichlorvos (DDV) and chlorpyrifos (CHP) in air, water, soil, and sediment phase were estimated as 0.26 kg, 19.77 kg, 1.06 × 104 kg, and 0.55 kg, respectively. Spatiotemporally, pesticide concentrations in water phase peaked in summer, while the middle and southwest regions of the watershed were identified as the hotspots for pesticide pollution. Compared with the classical model, the new framework provided technical support for the pesticide assessment at watershed scale with heterogeneous hydrological conditions, which can be easily extended to other watersheds, and integrated with other models for comprehensive agricultural management. • A new method is employed to monitor hydrological connectivity at the intersections of road networks and channel works. • The magnitude of hydrological connectivity is varied under different rainfall and road types. • PI 30 is the prerequisite condition of connectivity activation and road erosion. • There is a close interaction between hydrological connectivity and road erosion. Intersections of road and channel networks assist in better understanding of runoff and sediment transportation process feedback using the hydrological connectivity concept. However, quantifying functional connectivity and exploring the complex relationship between hydrological connectivity and the processes of runoff and sediment associated with road networks have largely been unexamined by field work. Therefore, our team conducted a 3-year monitoring of hydrological connectivity and road erosion from selected road segments in an agricultural watershed on the Loess Plateau. Rainfall events occurring during 2020–2022 were categorized into three types using K-means clustering analysis: small amounts of low-intensity rainfall (SL-R), large amounts of low-intensity rainfall (LL-R), and large amounts of high-intensity rainfall (LH-R). The monitored roads primarily consist of paved roads and unpaved roads (agricultural roads, abandoned roads, and petroleum roads). In our study, the intersections extracted by the road and channel networks were defined as hydrological connections, and sticks wrapped with clean gauze at the hydrological connections were monitored under variable rainfall conditions for functional connectivity assessment. The runoff heights and sediment traces attached to the sticks are alternative hydrological connectivity indicators. The results revealed an obvious increasing trend in the activation frequency and degree of hydrological connectivity as rainfall types transitioned from SL-R to LL-R and LH-R. Agricultural roads had a more intense response to hydrological connectivity between upslope drainage areas and road surfaces, and petroleum roads performed well in response to hydrological connectivity between road surfaces and down hillslopes. Random forest models indicate that PI 30 is the most dominant influencing factor of road erosion and hydrological connectivity between road upslope drainage areas and road surfaces. Road surface erosion rates are the primary determinants of hydrological connectivity between road surfaces and down hillslopes. These findings suggest a close interaction between road erosion and hydrological connectivity driven by these off-site effects. They offer additional evidence concerning runoff and sediment patterns and dynamics in relation to road networks and identify hydrological connectivity and road erosion hotspots. Coordinating measures for hydrological connectivity regulation and road erosion mitigation are essential for minimizing hydrological connectivity and road erosion off-site effects within watersheds. • Alluvial fans' soil quality in Lhasa River Basin was evaluated. • Soil quality index (SQI) was applied to alluvial fan and river terrace farmland. • No significant difference in physicochemical parameters was observed between two landforms. • Soil quality of alluvial fans was similar to river terrace farmland. Determining the soil quality of alluvial fans and its influencing factors is essential for understanding, utilizing, and protecting alluvial fans. In this study, a soil quality index (SQI) was constructed, and the soil of river terrace farmland was used as a control to evaluate the soil quality of alluvial fans in the Lhasa River Basin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Meanwhile, the influencing factors of soil quality of the alluvial fan were studied using correlation analysis. The results demonstrated that: 1) There is no significant difference in physicochemical indicators between the soil of the alluvial fan and river terrace farmland, namely the total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, available nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, soil organic matter, pH, electrical conductivity, and soil erodibility; however, the coefficient of variation of each physicochemical indicator of the alluvial fan is greater than that of river terrace farmland. 2) The mean SQI value of alluvial fans and river terrace farmlands are 0.37 and 0.38, respectively. There is no significant difference between the values, demonstrating that the soil quality of alluvial fans is not lower than that of river terrace farmland. 3) The soil quality of alluvial fans has a highly significant positive correlation with vegetation coverage, land use, annual precipitation, altitude, and geomorphic divisions; a significant positive correlation with geomorphic location; and a highly significant negative correlation with annual temperature. • The height of sediment traces is used as an alternative indicator to the functional connectivity. • The frequency and magnitude of sediment connectivity are not necessarily synchronized. • The response of sediment connectivity to rainfall is nonlinear in watersheds. • The spatial inhomogeneity and amount of rainfall are important factors influencing sediment connectivity. Sediment connectivity is a fundamental concept for understanding sediment dynamics within watersheds, serving as a crucial component in watershed management and soil and water conservation. However, quantifying sediment connectivity remains a challenging task due to its complexity and the difficulties associated with direct measurements of sediment flux at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Our research aims to address this challenge by monitoring functional sediment connectivity at various scales using two key indicators: sediment yield and sediment marks. Sediment yield is monitored at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and watershed outlets, while sediment marks provide additional insight into functional sediment connectivity along the sediment transport path, particularly in slope-channel cascades and channels following rainfall events. To record sediment marks, we used wooden sticks wrapped with clean gauze as an alternative to assessing functional connectivity. Our results revealed that the activation of sediment connectivity was influenced by rainfall amount, intensity, and type, with the highest activation observed at the slope plot, followed by the outlet of the slope-channel cascade and the watershed outlet. Notably, strong sediment connectivity at slope plots, slope-channel cascades, and main channels exhibits a weak correlation with sediment connectivity at the watershed outlet. In upper contribution areas with lower vegetation coverage and higher human disturbance, rainfall amount and I 60 values associated with sediment connectivity activation tend to be lower. Furthermore, our research indicates that medium-duration and moderate-intensity rainfall events have a more significant impact on sediment connectivity at slope plots, while rainfall types characterized by longer durations, lower intensity, and larger amounts have a more pronounced effect on sediment transport paths. This suggests that the identification of sediment connectivity switch nodes can be achieved by considering both rainfall characteristics and underlying surface features. Looking ahead, future research can leverage long-term observations and data-driven models to explore rainfall thresholds for sediment connectivity at various scales, ultimately improving sediment transport prediction within watersheds. • The effects of rainfall types and maintenance on road erosion were evaluated. • LH-R could generate road erosion several times higher than ordinary erosive events. • SL-R should be paid attention due to its cumulative impacts on rill erosion. • Drainage systems were confirmed to weaken road erosion. Although road erosion represents a threat to regional environmental and ecological security, limited evidence exists regarding the relationship between road erosion, rainfall, and road maintenance. In this study, we investigated the effects of different rainfall types on rill erosion and the degree of rill dissection of roads involving petroleum transportation and agricultural production in the hilly and gully region on the Loess Plateau of China from 2019 to 2021. During this period, 30 natural rainfall events occurred that were classified into four rainfall types using K-means clustering analysis. The results indicated that road erosion caused by large amount of rainfall with high intensity (LH-R) was 4.31, 3.82, and 3.48 times higher than that with small amount of rainfall with high intensity (SH-R), small amount of rainfall with low intensity (SL-R), and large amount with low intensity (LL-R), respectively. This highlighted the devastating impact of the LH-R on road erosion (the most severe of all types), with an average erosion rate of 527.04 t ha−1. Road erosion caused by SL-R events (most frequent) during the rainy season also deserves attention because of its cumulative impact on rill erosion. Moreover, compared to bare runoff plots and sloping farmlands, unpaved roads experienced a greater erosion rate due to upslope drainage areas and frequent human disturbance. In addition, the drainage system mitigates road erosion under LH-R, thereby reducing the average erosion rate by 56.42 %. We also found that road rehabilitation impedes the development of rills and diminishes the rate of road erosion compared to road segments without road rehabilitation. Collectively, the effects of rainfall types and maintenance activities on road erosion were assessed. The findings indicate that strengthening water and land management of upslope drainage areas, complementing the drainage system of unpaved roads, maintaining appropriate maintenance activities, and promoting vegetation coverage on the downslope of roads mitigate the resistance of unpaved roads to LH-R.
