A compact multi-wavelength hybrid-integrated directly-modulated distributed-feedback laser (DML) transmitter optical sub-assembly (TOSA) has been achieved in our laboratory. The 8-channel distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are monolithically integrated based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technology. With the high-density and high-speed packaging technique, the laser array and a multi-mode interference (MMI) multiplexer are assembled in the TOSA. The channel spacing of the TOSA is 200 GHz between adjacent lasers. It meets the 8 × 12.5 Gb/s operation demand and gives rather low channel crosstalk of less than −25 dB. This compact TOSA is of effective cost and shows good stability for mass production, which is expected to improve the performance of devices in access networks, data centers and supercomputing. An asymmetric π equivalent phase shift sampled Bragg grating (SBG) semiconductor, which is consisted of two section with the same length but different sampling duty cycle 0.4 and 0.6, is investigated experimentally. By increasing the two injected currents of the studied laser from 15 mA to 120 mA, the lasing wavelength can be tuned by 2.1 nm. Combining selecting appropriate sampling period, the lasing wavelength of the laser can be tuned to meet the ITU-T standard. Because of high yield and low cost, this type of SBG laser is very beneficial for designing and fabricating monolithically integrated wideband multiwavelength laser array for photonic integrated circuits in next generation fiber-optic system. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We summarized the design, fabrication challenges and important technologies for multi-wavelength laser transmitting photonic integration. Technologies discussed include multi-wavelength laser arrays, monolithic integration and modularizing coupling and packaging. Fabrication technique requirements have significantly declined with the rise of reconstruction-equivalent-chirp and second nanoimprint mask technologies. The monolithic integration problem between active and passive waveguides can be overcome with Butt-joint and InP array waveguide grating technologies. The dynamic characteristics of multi-factors will be simultaneously measured with multi-port analyzing modules. A low-cost tunable semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) laser design in access networks is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It covers 9 nm continuous tuning range by changing the temperature. The side mode suppression ratios are above 42 dB over the tuning range. The current and temperature coefficients of wavelength tuning are 0.0124 nm mA−1 and 0.0875 nm °C, respectively. The results indicate that the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique is promising to fabricate low-cost tunable DFB lasers meeting the requirement of wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PONs). Packaging of distributed feedback (DFB) laser array based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technology is a bridge from chip to system, and influences the practical process of REC chip. In this paper, DFB laser arrays of 4-channel @1310nm and 8-channel @1550nm are packaged. Our experimental results show that both these laser arrays have uniform wavelength spacing and larger than 35dB average Side Mode Suppression Ratio (SMSR). When I=35mA, we obtain the total output power of 1mW for 4-channel @1310nm, and 227μw for 8-channel @1550nm respectively. The high frequency characteristics of the packaged chips are also obtained, and the requirements for 4×10G or even 8×10G systems can be reached. Our results demonstrate the practical and low cost performance of REC technology and indicate its potential in the future fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A FBG sensor real-time demodulation system based on radio frequency signals' bandwidth monitoring is proposed. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first FBG sensor demodulated by using radio frequency signals' bandwidth. Beat frequency signals (BFS) are generated by multi-longitudinal mode laser in a laser cavity which is made of a sensing FBG, a static FBG and a piece of fiber. The sensing FBG's center wavelength shift is in proportion to a bandwidth change of BFS. The demodulation system has a high sensitivity of 50.0 MHz/ μ ε.
