The properties of TiBN-based coatings are significantly affected by adding alloying elements and coating parameters. Therefore, in this study, TiTaBN coatings with graded interlayer (CWGIL) were deposited on D2 steel substrates by pulsed DC biased (PDCB) and continuously DC biased (CDCB) closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering (CFUBMS). The structural, mechanical, adhesion and tribological properties of the coatings were analysed with EDS, SEM, XRD, microhardness, scratch testing and a pin-on-disc tribo-tester (under various atmospheric conditions). TiTaBN CWGIL deposited by PDCB magnetron sputtering (MS) had a very dense microstructure, high hardness and a high critical load value. TiTaBN CWGIL deposited by PDCB MS had a lower friction coefficient, the wear rate and the penetration depth in all atmospheric conditions. In conclusion, the application of a PDCB substrate instead of a CDCB one dramatically increases the performance of CFUBMS-deposited TiTaBN coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TiAlNiVN high entropy alloy (HEA) films were firstly produced in the literature using the magnetron sputtering system. These films were subjected to heat treatments at different temperatures between 750 °C and 900 °C. Strong TiN and VN crystal structures were observed in all the annealed films. The composition of each element constituting TiAlNiVN HEA films was within a concentration range of 5–35 %. The presence of TiAlNiVN HEA films was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. D-850 film had the highest hardness of 25.7 GPa and exhibited the lowest wear rate at 2.45 × 10−5 mm3/(N.m), attributable to its lowest surface roughness (0.22) and friction coefficient (0.44). Subsequent to the heat treatment, there was a substantial enhancement in the adhesion performance of the films, culminating in a high critical load value of 80 N. This study revealed that nitride-based TiAlNiVN HEA films could be enhanced in terms of hardness, tribological, and adhesion properties after heat treatment. Considering the adhesion performance, it is anticipated that the films we have produced will be a promising alternative to traditional nitride-based coatings in challenging and complex service conditions. MoS 2 coatings are effectively used in vacuum and in water vapor-free environments because of increased friction coefficient and decreased service life under atmospheric conditions. A lot of different alloy elements (e.g., Ti, Nb, Cr) and compounds (e.g., TiN, TiB 2 ) are used to enhance the friction and wear properties of MoS 2 coatings. In this study Ti/TiB 2 /MoS 2 graded-composite coatings (GCC) were deposited by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering (CFUBMS). The structural properties of the coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hardness of the coatings was measured with the use a microhardness tester. The tribological properties of the coatings were determined under air and vacuum conditions. Ti/TiB 2 /MoS 2 (GCC) have MoS 2 (002) and TiB 2 (100) reflections. The coatings exhibited a dense and non-columnar structure. Tribological properties of the coatings under air and vacuum conditions significantly affected the hardness, thickness and stoichiometric ratio of elements in the structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium boron nitride (TiBN) coatings have excellent properties such as extreme hardness, high melting point, high toughness, good corrosion, chemical inertness and good thermodynamic stability at high temperatures for various industrial applications. It is possible to change the mechanical and tribological properties of TiBN coatings by controlling the boron and nitrogen content of the coatings. In this study, Taguchi L9 (34) design method were used and structural, mechanical, tribological, corrosion and tribocorrosion properties of sputtered TiTaBN coatings obtained with Ta incorporation into TiBN were investigated. TiTaBN films were deposited on D2 steel and glass substrates by pulsed-dc closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering (CFUBMS). Morphology and structure of coatings were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. Mechanical and adhesion properties of TiTaBN coatings were determined with microhardness tester and a scratch tester, respectively. The friction and wear properties of the coatings were analyzed at different test athmospheres (humid air, distillated water, dry nitrogen and synthetic oil) by using pin-on-disc. Also, the high temperature wear properties of films were determined by using a high-temperature tribotester. The corrosion and tribocorrosion properties of untreated D2 substrates and TiTaBN films were determined by potentiostat and pin-on-disc tribometer- computer-controlled potentiostat system, respectively. As a result, TiTaBN films coated at the R8 coating parameters exhibited dense and a columnar structure. These ultra hard (52.55GPa) films having TiN, TaN, TiB2 and BN phases demonstrated excellent wear resistance at the different test athmospheres. Using of the different coating parameters improved adhesion, high temperature wear and corrosion resistance and tribocorrosion properties of TiTaBN films. 180

ÖZET Doktora Tezi M0S2-Tİ KOMPOZİT İNCE FİLMİN FARKLI ÇELİK TÜRLERİ ÜZERİNE PVD İLE KAPLANMASI: MEKANİK- TRİBOLOJİK- YAPISAL ÖZELLİKLERİNİN KARAKTERİZASYONU Ersin ARSLAN Atatürk Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü Makine Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalı Danışman : Prof. Dr. İhsan EFEOĞLU M0S2 yağlayıcı filminin tribolojik özelliklerinin iyileştirilmesi amacıyla; M0S2-Tİ katı yağlayıcı kompozit filmler, AISI D2, M2, 4140, 52100, 440C, 304 çelikleri ve silisyum levha üzerine CFUBMS tekniği ile büyütüldü. D. Thesis DEPOSITION ON DIFFERENT STEEL TYPES OF MoS2-Ti COMPOSITE THIN FILM: CHARACTERIZATION OF MECHANICAL-TRIBOLOGICAL-STRUCTURE PROPERTIES Ersin ARSLAN Atatürk University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Mechanical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. İhsan EFEO?LU M0S2-Tİ solid lubricant composite films were deposited on AISI M2, D2, 4140, 52100, 440C, 304 and silicon wafer by CFUBMS coating technique to improve tribological properties of M0S2 lubricant film. The deposition parameters (working pressure, substrate voltage, target current) that affect the structural-mechanical and tribological properties were determined, and nine different depositions were performed at the various levels of the parameters according to the method of Taguchi Lg(34) experimental design. The structural properties of M0S2-Tİ composite films were examined by XRD, SEM-EPMA, tribological properties in the environment of atmosphere and nitrogen were determined by Pin-on-disc wearing tester; and the mechanical properties were determined by Vickers microhardness. It was seen that the chemical compositions of M0S2-Tİ composite films were affected significantly at the different levels of sputtering parameters. The microstructure of M0S2-Tİ composite films was neither amorphous nor crystalline, but quasi-amorphous. It was observed partly the formation of (002) and (100) planes that characterizes M0S2. The structural changes were related to the different levels of deposition parameters and Ti amount. The friction coefficient increased relatively by the increase of the Ti amount while wear rate was decreasing. Depending upon the change of Ti amount, it was determined that sensitivity against humidity of M0S2 solid lubricant film decreased and the film durability also increased in the environment of dry-nitrogen. In addition, the optimum deposition parameters of M0S2-Tİ composite films were determined according to the method of Taguchi Lg(34) experimental design. 2003, 153 pages Keywords: Solid lubricant, MoS2-Ti, CFUBMS, Friction, Wear ii 153
