Background: In the Western Highlands of Cameroon (WHC), information on the nutritional value of fodder species consumed by ruminants is very limited. Methods: Through interviews with farmers and monitoring of animals on the range, information was obtained on the types of fodder resources consumed by the ruminants. Samples of each forage species were collected in 15 districts, mixed, chopped, and dried in a ventilated oven at 60°C, and then ground for chemical composition analysis. Results: Twenty‐two forage species were identified. Among these species, Vernonia amygdalina (29.43% ± 0.45% dry matter [DM]) and Pennisetum clandestinum (87.21% ± 1.33% DM) were, respectively, the highest in protein and neutral detergent fiber contents. Manihot esculenta was one of the most energy‐rich forages in terms of forage unit for lactation and forage unit for meat production. Hierarchical ascending classification revealed three main groups of forages, respectively, rich in crude fiber (Group 1), protein (Group 2), and energy (Group 3). Conclusions: The present study identified 22 forage species browsed by ruminants in WHC. Further studies should be carried out to determine the antinutritional factors and to evaluate their nutrient value using in vitro or in situ digestibility techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To determine the in vitro digestibility and gas production, and to estimate the methane emissions from Kikuyu grass pastures, and Kikuyu grass overseeded with rye. Design/methodology/approach: Two pastures were assessed. One was the subtropical grass Kikuyu (Cenchrus clandestinus) (KY), and the other was Kikuyu grass plus overseeding with rye (Secale cereale) (KYCEN), both associated with white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Ladino). Sample collection was in June and July 2021. In vitro digestibility of dry matter (MS), organic matter (MO), and Neutral Detergent Fibre (FDN), as well as the methane emissions were estimated. The in vitro digestibility and gas production variables were analysed with a split-plot experimental design, and the methane emission variables were analysed with a doble cross-over design. Results: There were no significant differences between treatments for dry matter (MS), organic matter (MO) or Neutral Detergent Fibre (FDN) in vitro digestibility, nor in methane emissions (P>0.05). Limitations on study/implications: The in vitro assessment of digestibility, gas production and the estimation of methane emissions of Kikuyu grass pastures and Kikuyu plus rye enable the implementation of feeding strategies for small-scale livestock production systems that do not only benefit the farmers but also the environment. Trifolium repens L. (white clover) and Lolium perenne L. (ryegrass) are green manures widely used in conservation tillage systems worldwide. Eleusine indica L. (goosegrass) is a globally recognized noxious weed. Herein, we investigated the effects of aqueous extracts, decomposed liquids, and different straw-to-soil ratios on the germination and growth of goosegrass. The results showed that high concentrations (= 30%) of aqueous extracts or decomposed liquids of both green manures significantly inhibited germination-related parameters of goosegrass. The strongest inhibitory effect was observed for the 7-day decomposition treatment, and white clover's inhibitory effect was greater than ryegrass's. A pot experiment showed that non-photochemical quenching, catalase, and peroxidase activity levels of goosegrass leaves were significantly increased. At the same time, the net photosynthetic rate significantly decreased. Seedling growth was inhibited when the straw-to-soil ratio was greater than 3:100. The ryegrass treatments inhibited goosegrass seedlings more than the white clover treatments. This study demonstrated the inhibitory potential of white clover and ryegrass straw return on seed germination and seedling growth of goosegrass. The study has also helped to identify weed-resistant substances in these green manures so that their weed-control properties can be used more effectively and herbicide usage can be reduced. Purpose : Nitrogen (N) transfer from white clover (Trifolium repens cv.) to ryegrass (Lolium perenne cv.) has the potential to meet ryegrass N requirements. This study aimed to quantify N transfer in a mixed pasture and investigate the influence of the microbial community and land management on N transfer. Methods: Split root 15N-labelling of clover quantified N transfer to ryegrass via exudation, microbial assimilation, decomposition, defoliation and soil biota. Incorporation into the microbial protein pool was determined using compound-specific 15N-stable isotope probing approaches. Results: N transfer to ryegrass and soil microbial protein in the model system was relatively small, with one-third arising from root exudation. N transfer to ryegrass increased with no microbial competition but soil microbes also increased N transfer via shoot decomposition. Addition of mycorrhizal fungi did not alter N transfer, due to the source-sink nature of this pathway, whilst weevil grazing on roots decreased microbial N transfer. N transfer was bidirectional, and comparable on a short-term scale. Conclusions: N transfer was low in a model young pasture established from soil from a permanent grassland with long-term N fertilisation. Root exudation and decomposition were major N transfer pathways. N transfer was influenced by soil biota (weevils, mycorrhizae) and land management (e.g. grazing). Multispecies swards, comprised of different plant functional groups have comparable production potential to high N input L. perenne swards at reduced N when legumes are included. However, information on the appropriate management of multispecies swards is limited. The effect of differing management practices on the herbage dry‐matter (DM) production and botanical composition of different sward types was investigated using a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design plot experiment. The experiment consisted of three sward types: L. perenne‐only receiving (LP; 250 kg N ha−1 a−1); L. perenne‐Trifolium repens (LP‐TR); multispecies sward containing L. perenne, Phleum pratense, Trifolium repens, Trifolium pratense, Plantago lanceolata and Cichorium intybus (MSS). LP‐TR and MSS received 90 kg N ha−1 a−1. Harvesting of plot herbage took place every 21 or 28 days to a defoliation height of 4 or 6 cm, over two growing seasons (March to November 2020 and 2021 inclusive). Annual herbage produced by both LP and LP‐TR was not significantly affected by defoliation frequency. However, MSS produced 1923 kg DM ha−1 a−1 more herbage when harvested less frequently. Unsown species contributed significantly less to the herbage DM of MSS compared to LP and LP‐TR and remained similar in 2020 and 2021, whereas the contribution of unsown species to herbage DM increased in LP and LP‐TR from 2020 to 2021, with noxious species more associated with LP and LP‐TR than MSS. Results demonstrate the role of multispecies swards in improving the sustainability of grass‐based agricultural systems in an environment of reduced fertilizer inputs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to quantify the farm gate nitrogen (N) offset potential of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) white clover (Trifolium repens L.; WC) swards by comparing the herbage and milk production from dairy farmlets that were simulations of full farming systems. A study was established where 120 cows were randomly assigned to 4 farmlets of 10.9 ha (stocking rate: 2.75 cow/ha), composed of 20 paddocks each. Cows were fed 526 kg of DM of concentrate on average each year. The 4 grazing treatments were PRG-only at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC at 150 or 250 kg of N/ha. Cows remained in their treatment group for an entire grazing season and were re-randomized as they calved across treatments each year. As cows calved in the spring as standard practice in Ireland, they were rotationally grazed from early February both day and night (weather permitting) to mid-November, to a target postgrazing sward height of 4.0 cm. Mean sward WC content was 18.1% and 15.4% for the 150 and 250 kg of N/ha PRG-WC treatments, respectively over the 3-yr period. When WC was included, lowering the N rate did not reduce pregrazing yield, pregrazing height, or herbage removed, but those factors decreased significantly when WC was absent. Total annual herbage DM production was 13,771, 15,242, 14,721, and 15,667 kg of DM/ha for PRG-only swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha and PRG-WC swards receiving 150 or 250 kg of N/ha, respectively. In addition, when WC was present, compressed postgrazing sward heights were lower (4.10 vs. 4.21 cm) and herbage allowance (approximately 17 kg/cow feed allocation per cow per day) higher than the high-N control (+ 0.7 kg of DM/cow per day). There was a significant increase in milk production, both per cow and per hectare, when WC was included in PRG swards. Over the 3-yr study, cows grazing PRG-WC had greater milk (+304 kg) and milk solids (+31 kg of fat + protein) yields than cows grazing PRG-only swards. This significant increase in milk production suggests that the inclusion of WC in grazing systems can be effectively used to increase milk production per cow and per hectare and help offset nitrogen use. This result shows the potential to increase farm gate N use efficiency and reduce the N surplus compared with PRG-dominant sward grazing systems receiving 250 kg of N/ha, without negatively affecting milk solids yield or herbage production, thus increasing farm profit by €478/ha. The nutrient use efficiency of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) (PR) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) (WC) cultivars can affect the grass-legume compatibility of different cultivar combinations, thus impacting the sustainability of animal production systems, especially on marginal soils. The objective of this work was to evaluate N, P, and K absorption efficiency (NAE, PAE, and KAE) and use efficiency (NUE, PUE, and KUE). This study included two experiments with the same full factorial treatment structure (4 PR cultivars x 3 WC cultivars) in a randomized complete block design under field conditions and a completely randomized pot design. The field cutting experiment was carried out on sites with two contrasting soil depths and the pot experiment was conducted under shade conditions. Results showed nonsignificant (P > 0.05) factor interactions for DM yield and both nutrient absorption and use efficiency. The NAE and PAE of PR 'Extreme' and 'Bealey' were higher under field conditions than pot conditions. In the field experiment, NAE of WC 'Will' (2.33 kg DM ha-1)/mg N kg-1)) tended to be similar (P < 0.05) to other cultivars in deep soil, but was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than 'Ladino' and 'Bounty' in shallow soil (0.70 kg DM ha-1)/mg kg-1). The evaluation of NUE and PUE under field conditions and KUE under pot conditions showed that PR 'Bealey' and WC 'Ladino' reached higher values. In conclusion, results showed a cultivar effect on nutrient use efficiency in PR/WC mixtures, which had an impact on PRWC compatibility, mainly due to the higher absorption efficiency of PR 'Bealey' and WC 'Will', both of which exhibited the highest degree of compatibility for total DM yield. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is cultivated in many countries for its high yield and good quality forage. Its cultivars have specific functional traits, such as phenology, growth habit and rate, which affect the competitiveness and productivity of mixtures. The cultivation of new cultivars of perennial ryegrass or mixtures of cultivars in swards is one of the complementary measures to improve the condition of swards. The study was aimed to determine the productivity potential of three newer, less investigated Lithuanian perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars 'Elena DS', 'Raminta', 'Verseka', and cultivar mixtures in single-species swards and in mixtures with legumes - white and red clover. The experiment was set up in the central part of Lithuania in the Nemoral climate zone. Mineral fertilisers were not used for the mixtures with legumes, singlespecies crops were fertilised with N150 kg ha-1 yr-1. Over the two experimental years, the average dry matter yield of perennial ryegrass was 8.00 t ha-1 for the 'Elena DS', 7.4 t ha-1 for 'Verseka', 6.9 t ha-1 for 'Raminta' and 7.4 t ha-1 for the cultivar mixture. In the 1st year of sward use, the productivity of the perennial ryegrass cultivars did not differ significantly. In the 2nd year, the productivity of 'Elena DS' was significantly higher compared with that of the other cultivars cultivated in single-species crops. The influence of functional traits of the cultivars was significant in the first year of cultivation and persisted in single-species swards but not in mixtures from the second year onwards. The plants of the cultivar 'Elena DS' allowed the development of clover in the mixture, resulting in an increase in herbage productivity and crude protein content. The results of the experiment suggest that a mixture of perennial ryegrass cultivars can be used in swards, as a similar dry matter yield was recorded compared to a single-cultivar swards. However, the benefits of swards may vary from season to season, and more research is needed to assess the impact of a mixture of cultivars on grass productivity and quality with ageing of swards and accumulation in different environmental conditions. Perennial ryegrass (PRG, Lolium perenne L.) breeding effort in New Zealand (NZ) has increased since c. 1990, resulting in greater functional trait diversity (e.g. heading date, ploidy, and associated Epichloë endophyte strain) in commercial products. This study quantified the variation, associations and interactions in dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive value and persistence‐related traits among commercial cultivar‐endophyte combinations released between 1973 and 2012, as a basis for assessing gains in value being delivered to the pasture‐based livestock industries. Twenty‐four or 28 combinations were compared over 3 years in two trials in each of two regions: Waikato in northern NZ (dryland), and Canterbury in central eastern South Island (irrigated). Cultivar‐endophyte combinations were sown in mixtures with white clover, and pastures were intensively grazed 8–11 times per year by dairy cows. Principal Component Analysis identified 4 distinct clusters for the DM yield variables and for metabolisable energy (ME) content in each of the four trials. A broadly‐adapted group of three late‐season flowering, AR37‐infected diploids with NZ and Spanish breeding backgrounds dominated the highest‐yielding clusters. Tetraploids dominated the high ME content clusters. Interactions with region were observed throughout the data set: the strongest of these was driven by endophyte strain effects in Waikato. High‐yielding cultivar‐endophyte combinations in these trials were also generally high‐yielding in the standard cultivar merit testing system operated in New Zealand, as interpreted via the DairyNZ Forage Value Index. However, alignment was poorer for medium‐ and lower‐yielding cultivar‐endophyte combinations. Several implications for forage evaluation methods and end‐user industries are identified. Policy measures have been taken to improve water quality in the Netherlands. These measures include the abolishment of derogation, which allowed dairy farmers to go beyond the maximum application of 170 kg nitrogen (N) from organic fertiliser per hectare, and additional measures of the 7th Nitrates Action program. Grass-clover swards, known for their symbiotic N fixation, could be a strategy to deal with stricter N policies and can potentially improve the environmental sustainability and economic viability of Dutch dairy farms. The aim was to assess the effects of stricter N policies on the farm structure, farm income and environmental performance of a representative Dutch dairy farm on a sandy soil, and to assess the effect of incorporating perennial ryegrass-red white clover (GC rw) swards and perennial ryegrass-white clover (GC w) swards into the grassland management of this farm using a model. A whole-dairy farm linear programming model was used with the objective function to maximize farm income. The model was combined with a farm nutrient balance and life-cycle assessment to determine the impact on nutrient surpluses and greenhouse gas emissions. We modelled a representative Dutch dairy farm with perennial ryegrass (PRG) before and after implementing stricter N policies. Thereafter, the implications of implementing GC rw and GC w swards was assessed. Including the policy measures increased the share of maize land (+12%), decreased the number of dairy cows (-9 cows), reduced farm income (€-18,858 yr-1), led to similar greenhouse gas emissions (∼800 kg carbon dioxide equivalents (CO 2 -eq) per tonne (t) of fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM)), and resulted in a lower N surplus (-65 kg ha-1 yr-1) and phosphate surplus (-4.4 kg ha-1 yr-1) for a scenario with only PRG. The use of GC rw and GC w swards could partly compensate for the reduction in farm income (€+9,255 up to +14,706 yr-1). A combination of PRG, GC rw and GC w resulted in the highest farm income. The use of grass-clover swards only had the most positive effect on greenhouse gas emissions (767 kg CO 2 -eq t-1 FPCM) and N surplus (113 kg ha-1 yr-1). Sensitivity analysis showed the importance of yields and feed characteristics on the obtained farm income. Grass-clover swards might partly compensate for the negative economic consequences of stricter N policies for Dutch dairy farms. Furthermore, implementing grass-clover swards reduced the GHG emission intensity of milk, but not always nutrient surpluses per hectare of farm land. Background: The implementation of polyphytic pastures composed of grasses and legumes is an important component of agricultural systems in temperate zones, since grazing pastures which can reduce feed costs--are a viable option for small-scale dairy systems (SSDS). Objective: To evaluate the continuous grazing of dairy cows in Festulolium pastures associated with annual and perennial ryegrass and with clover in two farmrs. Methodology: Two experiments were carried out. The first experiment was established in the municipality of Almoloya of Juárez using eight cows that were divided into two groups of four; the cows grazed on two pastures with Festulolium associated with annual ryegrass and they were fed with 3.6 kg DM/cow/day of commercial concentrate, for 16 weeks. The second experiment was carried out in the Northwest of State of Mexico; six multiparous cows grazed on two pastures, under a cross over design arrangement; one pasture features Festulolium cv Spring Green and the other, annual ryegrass. Milk and body condition ere measured every 3 and 12 d, respectively. Variables from both experiments were analyzed using a split-plot experimental design. Results: Neither experiment recorded significant differences for the net accumulation of forage, the height of the pastures, and their chemical composition (P=0.05). No significant differences between treatments (P=0.05) were recorded regarding the yields and chemical composition of the milk. Study Limitations/Implications: The study of mixed pastures can be an alternative for feeding grazing cows, helping to reduce costs in SSDS. We tested whether selection of ryegrass for reduced root hair length and density would reduce root competition on white clover for phosphate (P). A Rhizosheath Selection Tool was used to select two ryegrass populations with contrasting root hair traits. These were grown at five soil P levels in a glasshouse experiment and rhizosheath trait selection had no effect on growth or shoot P concentrations. The ryegrass populations were also grown with white clover in soils with Olsen P12 or 19 mg L−1. In the Olsen P12 soil, clover grown with the smaller rhizosheath ryegrass had significantly heavier shoots and contained more P than clover grown with the larger rhizosheath ryegrass. In the Olsen P19 soil differences in ryegrass rhizosheath had no effect on clover growth. The results showed that under the experimental conditions, grass-clover competition for soil P could be modified by the rhizosheath traits of ryegrass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experiment investigated the feasibility of using herb-clover mixes to enable early weaning of lambs at ∼60 days of age. Over two years, twin lambs weighing more than 16 kg were allocated to three treatments: ryegrass pastures until 90 days-of-age, herb-clover mix until 90 days-of-age or weaned at ∼60 days of age onto herb-clover mix. In 2014, lambs offered the herb-clover mix, weaned at 60 or 90 days, were heavier at 90 days than lambs grazing on pasture with their dams. In 2015, lambs that weaned early onto the herb-clover mix were lighter at the same age as lambs that remained with their dam, but they still achieved a commercial weight. Ewes weaned early were heavier at weaning than ewes suckling lambs on ryegrass pasture in both years. Under some conditions, early weaning of lambs onto a herb-clover mix can be an effective alternative to conventional weaning on ryegrass pasture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

More than 50% of agricultural land is threatened by water erosion in the Czech Republic. With respect to soil erosion, maize (Zea mays L.) belongs to the most problematic crops; one of the possibilities to increase protection against erosion is intercropping. In this study, we attempted to find out the effects of individual intercrops and their mixtures (sown 4--6 weeks after sowing maize) or a mixed culture (maize plus lupine) on the soil losses and surface runoff in the period 2019--2021. The study was realised in a sugar beet growing region (Haplic Luvisol); a field rainfall simulator was used. From the used variants with Lolium perenne L., Trifolium repens L., Vicia villosa Roth, Lolium multiflorum Lam., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Triticum aestivum L. or a mixture (Vicia villosa plus a Trifolium hybrid diploid), the variants with Lolium perenne, Lolium multiflorum, Vicia villosa or Vicia villosa plus the Trifolium hybrid diploid, established between the maize rows (hybrid maize, cultivar Walterinio) on May 27, were the most efficient in case of both the soil losses and runoff reductions in the year 2019. For example, Triticum aestivum between the maize rows mostly reduced the soil losses and the surface runoff was similar (or higher) compared with the control (maize without any intercrop). The variant with Trifolium repens had mostly higher (or similar) soil loss values (compared with the control); in this variant, the runoff was lower compared with the control. We proved our hypothesis with regards to the higher reduction in the soil losses than with the runoff in the variant with Lolium perenne. The results from the years 2020 (the used variants with Lolium multiflorum, Secale cereale L., Trifolium incarnatum L., Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth., Lolium multiflorum plus Trifolium incarnatum, Lolium multiflorum plus Vicia pannonica Crantz) and 2021 (the variants with Lolium multiflorum, Lolium multiflorum -- early sowing, Secale cereale, Trifolium incarnatum, Phacelia tanacetifolia, Lolium multiflorum plus Trifolium incarnatum, a mixed culture = maize plus Lupinus albus L.) showed the variants with Trifolium incarnatum, the mixture (Lolium multiflorum plus Trifolium incarnatum), Phacelia tanacetifolia (in the year 2020) or the mixture (Lolium multiflorum plus Trifolium incarnatum) and a mixed culture (maize plus Lupinus albus) (2021) had the most positive effect -- the soil loss and surface runoff values were lower when the maize was > 2 m compared with the maize < 1 m. The results obtained in the period 2019--2021 showed the grasses were the most efficient in decreasing the soil losses when the maize was < 1 m and when the maize was > 2 m with the used mixtures. This study compared the fertiliser effects of different types of liquid anaerobic digestates on the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and on soil's primary plant macronutrients and microbial abundance. A factorial design with seven fertilisers and one control (five liquid anaerobic digestates, undigested cattle slurry, calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) 27% N, and no fertiliser) and four plant schemes (monocultures of perennial ryegrass and white clover, a mix of both, and bare soil) were tested. Plant (forage yield, leaf area index (LAI), canopy height and root mass) and soil (concentrations of total N, Morgan's extracted P and K) responses were measured, as well as soil bacterial/archaeal (16S) and fungal (18S) gene copy numbers (GCN). Digestates and cattle slurry with different chemical compositions, when balanced in terms of the quantity of dry matter applied, had comparable forage yield responses (p > 0.05), with higher yields than CAN mostly observed in ryegrass and mixed vegetation (p < 0.05). The presence of white clover contributed to higher soil N (p < 0.05). Soil available P was increased by biofertiliser applications (p < 0.05). Soil available K was influenced by the interaction between biofertiliser and type of plant (p < 0.05), with ryegrass/mixed swards showing lower K concentrations than white clover and bare soil. Soil bacterial (16S) GCN responded to the interaction between fertiliser/vegetation (p < 0.05), while archaeal (16S) and fungal (18S) GCN only to the type of vegetation (p < 0.05). The application of anaerobic digestates showed low direct impacts on the microbial GCN of the soil, mostly influenced by type of vegetation. The biofertilisers showed comparable performances and effects, despite substantial differences between their chemical compositions, indicating a possible complex matrix of interactions between fertiliser-plant-soil-environment. • Different types of anaerobic digestates drove comparable forage yield responses. • Ryegrass showed better response to anaerobic digestates fertilisation than white clover. • Anaerobic digestate application had low influence on soil microbial numbers. • The type of vegetation had strong influence on soil microbial numbers. Incorporating plantain with perennial ryegrass and white clover (RGWC) can improve the quality and quantity of grazing pastures; however, the sowing rate could affect the persistence of plantain, pasture yield, and nutritive value in different seasons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing sowing rates of plantain when established with RGWC on the dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition, nutritive value, and bioactive compounds of the pasture over the first two years after sowing; and to determine the relationship between plantain content and nutritive characteristics in different seasons. The pasture treatments were RGWC, RGWC + low plantain rate (PLL), RGWC + medium plantain rate (PLM), and RGWC + high plantain rate (PLH). The results showed that annual DM yield was similar between treatments. The average plantain content (including leaves and reproductive stem) was 32, 44, and 48% in PLL, PLM, and PLH, respectively. The plantain composition increased in the first 15 months, then declined rapidly to about 20–30% at day 705 after sowing. Compared with RGWC, the plantain-RGWC pastures (PLL, PLM, PLH) had a higher content of organic matter digestibility (OMD), ash, starch, non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), P, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Zn, B, Co, aucubin, acteoside, and catalpol, while they contained a lower composition of DM%, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), crude fat (CF), Fe, and Mn. These differences were linearly associated with the content of plantain leaves in the pasture and were higher in summer and autumn than in spring. In conclusion, incorporating plantain into the RGWC pasture can improve herbage nutritive quality, thus potentially increasing farm productivity and environmental benefits. The purpose of the experiment is to determine the composition and energy value of fodder from monoculture and mixed grass stands of perennial ryegrass with legume fodder crops under mountain conditions. It was found that the concentration of the fiber components of the cell walls in the monoculture grass stands of perennial ryegrass was significantly higher compared to the mixed ones, which affected the forage mass digestibility. The highest dry matter digestibility was registered in the biomass of Lolium perenne L. + Trifolium repens L. mixture (642.54 g kg-1 DM) followed by Lolium perenne L. + Lotus corniculatus L. (636.28 g kg-1 DM) and Lolium perenne L. + Trifolium pratense L. (622.18 g kg-1 DM). The monoculture grass stands with red clover had the highest content of neutral detergent fibers (418.03 g kg-1 DM), whereas the bird's-foot-trefoil biomass had the highest concentration of acid detergent fibers (291.98 g kg-1 DM), acid-detergent lignin (70.72 g kg-1 DM) and cellulose (221.27 g kg-1 DM). The forage mass of pasture ryegrass registered lower values for all the investigated parameters compared to its mixtures with leguminous forage crops. The highest caloric content is the harvested grass stands of Lolium perenne L. with Lotus corniculatus L. (17.48 MJ/kg DM). Biomass also has the highest average value of energy useful for the normal course of physiological needs in the animal organism (7.45 MJ/kg DM), as well as in terms of the number of feed units for milk (0.68 in kg DM) and growth (0.62 in kg DM). The earth's climate is changing because of the increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration, to which livestock is a major contributor. Methane produced from cattle can be reduced by using high quality forages. This study compared the GHG produced from M. oleifera in an artificial ruminant system with two high quality pasture species, ryegrass and white clover. Methane and total gas production were measured using an in vitro batch culture system. A preliminary screening using oven dried M. oleifera planted in field and greenhouse, and a main experiment using six provenances of M. oleifera, a composite sample and M. oleifera leaves from greenhouse was undertaken. Both experiments compared the M. oleifera from different sources with high quality ryegrass and white clover. Real time gas production was recorded for 48 h, total gas production, methane analysed at 12 and 24 h. Short chain fatty acids concentration were also determined at the end of the fermentation. Preliminary results showed that M. oleifera leaves grown in field and greenhouse have lower gas and methane production compared with ryegrass, but similar to white clover. The differences were driven by a high production of propionic and butyric acids. The six M. oleifera provenances also produced less methane than ryegrass but were similar to white clover at 12 and 24 h after the start of fermentation. M. oleifera fermented faster than ryegrass or white clover. Hydrogen production from fermentation of M. oleifera might not have been diverted to methane production but removed by other compounds. Dry matter (DM) production of multispecies swards compared to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne; PRG) swards under intensive grazing warrants investigation as it is relatively unknown. A 5 × 2 factorial experiment, with five sward types and two defoliation methods, was used to investigate the effect of grazing versus cutting on dry matter (DM) production of multispecies and PRG‐only swards. Five sward types were established namely: a PRG‐only sward, receiving 250 kg N ha−1 year−1 (PRG250), and a PRG‐only sward (PRG90), a two‐species sward with PRG and white clover (Trifolium repens; PRGWC), a six‐species sward (6S) and a nine‐species sward (9S), each receiving 90 kg N ha−1 year−1. Cutting plots measured 1.95 × 10 m and grazing plots measured 10 × 10 m. All plots were harvested concurrently every 21–30 days from April‐November for two years (2015 and 2016). A strip from the grazing plots was cut for DM yield determination prior to turning in cattle for grazing. There was an interaction between sward type and defoliation method (p < .01), whereby there was no effect of defoliation method on the PRG‐only swards, however, the annual DM production of PRGWC, 6S and 9S swards reduced under grazing compared to cutting (p < .001; on average 1,929 kg DM/ha lower). Grazed grass is the cheapest feed available for dairy cows in temperate regions; thus, to maximize profits, dairy farmers must optimize the use of this high-quality feed. Previous research has defined the benefits of including white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in grass swards for milk production, usually at reduced nitrogen usage and stocking rate. The aim of this study was to quantify the responses in milk production of dairy cows grazing tetraploid or diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) sown with and without white clover but without reducing stocking rate or nitrogen usage. We compared 4 grazing treatments in this study: tetraploid PRG-only swards, diploid PRG-only swards, tetraploid with white clover swards, and diploid with white clover swards. Thirty cows were assigned to each treatment, and swards were rotationally grazed at a farm-level stocking rate of 2.75 cows/ha and a nitrogen fertilizer rate of 250 kg/ha annually. Sward white clover content was 23.6 and 22.6% for tetraploid with white clover swards and diploid with white clover swards, respectively. Milk production did not differ between the 2 ploidies during this 4-yr study, but cows grazing the PRG-white clover treatments had significantly greater milk yields (+596 kg/cow per year) and milk solid yields (+48 kg/cow per year) compared with cows grazing the PRG-only treatments. The PRG-white clover swards also produced 1,205 kg of DM/ha per year more herbage, which was available for conserving and buffer feeding in spring when these swards were less productive than PRG-only swards. Although white clover is generally combined with reduced nitrogen fertilizer use, this study provides evidence that including white clover in either tetraploid or diploid PRG swards, combined with high levels of nitrogen fertilizer, can effectively increase milk production per cow and per hectare. Increasing herbage dry‐matter (DM) production and utilization on‐farm improves efficiency and sustainability. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., ploidy and white clover, Trifolium repens L., inclusion on herbage DM production and utilization in an intensive animal grazing system, with high nitrogen (N) inputs (250 kg N ha−1) and a high stocking rate (2.75 livestock units ha−1). The study was a 2 × 2 factorial design, consisting of diploid and tetraploid cultivars sown as grass‐only and grass‐white clover to give four sward treatments (diploid‐only, tetraploid‐only, diploid‐white clover, tetraploid‐white clover). These were evaluated at each grazing occasion (8–10 per year) for 3 years (2014–2016). Tetraploid‐white and grass‐white clover swards had a lower sward density (−9 and −8 kg DM cm−1, respectively) and perennial ryegrass tiller density (−820 and −1,436 tillers m−2, respectively) leading to lower postgrazing sward heights (−0.15 and −0.41 cm, respectively), and maintained a superior nutritive value when compared with diploid‐only and grass‐only swards respectively. White clover inclusion resulted in higher productivity characterized by increased herbage DM production (+1,468 kg DM ha−1), improved nutritive value and increased utilization across the three grazing seasons. A lysimeter experiment using undisturbed monoliths from a stony silt loam soil was carried out to quantify the effects different pasture types on N losses from urine applied to soil on different dates. Three pasture types were tested: (a) perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)/white clover (Trifolium repens) (PRG/WC), (b) perennial ryegrass/white clover/plantain (Plantago lanceolata) (PRG/WC/P) and (c) Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiforum)/white clover/plantain (IRG/WC/P), with four different urine applications dates (late summer, early autumn, mid‐autumn and late autumn). Cattle urine was applied at the equivalent of 700 kg N−1 ha−1. There was a significant reduction in total amount of nitrate (NO3−‐N) leached under the PRG/WC/P (14% reduction) and IRG/WC/P (24% reduction) compared with the PRG/WC. High NO3−‐N leaching losses were found at each urine application date (>181 kg NO3−‐N/ha), suggesting there may be higher than expected N leaching losses when urine is deposited onto shallow stony soils, during warmer months (late summer and early autumn). Carbon (C) cycling is crucial to agroecosystem functioning. Important determinants for the belowground C flow are soil food webs, with microorganisms and microfaunal grazers, i.e., nematodes, as key biota. The present study investigates the incorporation of plant-derived C into the nematode micro-food web under two different cropping systems, grassland (ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.)) and agroforest (willow (Salix schwerinii Wolf and Salix viminalis L)). To quantify the C flux from the plant into the soil micro-food web, grass and willow were pulse-labeled with 13CO2 and the incorporation of 13C into the nematode trophic groups was monitored 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after labeling. The natural stable isotope signals (13C/12C, 15N/14N) were analyzed to determine the structure of the nematode micro-food web. The natural isotopic δ15N signal revealed different trophic levels for omnivores and predators in grassland and agroforest soils. The incorporation of plant C into nematode tissue was detectable three days after 13CO2 labeling with the highest and fastest C allocation in plant feeders in grassland, and in fungal feeders in agroforest soil. C flux dynamics between the aboveground vegetation and belowground micro-food web varied with cropping system. This demonstrates that crop-specific translocation of C affects the multitrophic interactions in the root environment, which in turn can alter soil nutrient cycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to examine fluctuations in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) content in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) swards within a high nitrogen (250 kg N/ha) input grazing dairy system. The data came from a larger, overall system experiment within which all management and growing condition variables were categorised each year for the 40 paddocks that contained perennial ryegrass-white clover swards, over four growing years. Within that study, eight perennial ryegrass cultivars were examined, each sown individually with two white clover cultivars in a 50:50 mix of 'Chieftain' and 'Crusader'. To determine management associations and meteorological patterns with white clover content and rate/direction of change, separate generalised linear models were used to analyse each individual management or meteorological variable. Paddocks with high white clover contents were associated with lower pre- and post-grazing sward heights, lower pasture cover over the winter period and shorter over-winter period. Perennial ryegrass cultivars with lower pre- and post-grazing height, lower pre-grazing pasture mass and pasture yield removed, all retained more white clover in their swards. Soil fertility remained a key factor that affected white clover persistence influencing the degree of responses in all treatments, particularly soil phosphorus (P) levels. Beyond this, higher white clover contents and lower rates of white clover decline were associated with paddocks that received lower rainfall, had higher soil moisture deficits and received more radiation into the base of the sward, particularly around the time of grazing. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Including forage legumes in dairy systems can help address increasing environmental/economic concerns about perennial ryegrass monoculture pastures. This work investigated the effect of substituting fresh‐cut grass with increasing quantities of fresh‐cut white clover (WC) on milk fatty acid (FA) profile and transfer efficiency of dietary linoleic (LA) and α‐linolenic (ALNA) acids to milk fat. Three groups of three crossbred dairy cows were used in a 3 × 3 crossover design. Dietary treatments were 0 g kg−1 WC + 600 g kg−1 grass, 200 g kg−1 WC + 400 g kg−1 grass, and 400 g kg−1 WC + 200 g kg−1 grass. All treatments were supplemented with 400 g kg−1 concentrates on a dry matter basis. Cows had a 19‐day adaptation period to the experimental diet before a 6‐day measurement period in individual tie stalls. RESULTS: Increasing dietary WC did not affect dry matter intake, milk yield or milk concentrations of fat, protein or lactose. Milk polyunsaturated FA concentrations (total n‐3, total n‐6, LA and ALNA) and transfer efficiency of LA and ALNA were increased with increasing dietary WC supply. CONCLUSION: Inclusion of WC in pastures may increase concentrations of nutritionally beneficial FA, without influencing milk yield and basic composition, but any implications on human health cannot be drawn. © 2018 The Authors. This paper describes how the core treatments in the national experimental design (all combinations of with/without clover and high/low nitrogen (N)) were implemented at an irrigated Canterbury site and monitored for three years. There was a consistent N × clover interaction, caused mainly by substantially lower yields in the Low N without clover treatment compared with all other treatments. At the phenotypic contrast level, the main effect of perennial ryegrass heading date on white clover content was significant in four of the nine seasonal data sets available: on these occasions, mixtures based on mid-season heading cultivars had higher clover content than later season-heading cultivars. However, this difference was not sufficient to cause any clover × cultivar interactions in herbage accumulation. The implementation and monitoring of the treatments in the core experiment (eight perennial ryegrass cultivars grown under four combinations of plus/minus clover and high/low nitrogen (N)) at a dryland Waikato site is described. The N x clover interaction was significant in 10 of the 17 seasonal or total annual herbage accumulation (HA) data sets available, caused by substantially lower annual HA in the low N minus clover treatment compared with all other treatments. Five significant scaling-type clover × cultivar interactions in HA were evident. In all cases, HA was greater in plus clover than minus clover treatments, but more so for some cultivars than others. However, the interactions were not consistent across seasons, and different cultivars or phenotypic contrast groups were involved in many cases. The development of economic indexing systems for ranking cultivars of forage species requires new knowledge of factors that may influence the scaling of agronomic data collected in controlled, small-plot evaluation trials to whole farm systems. In the case of perennial ryegrass indexing, one such knowledge gap is the effect of growing clover with ryegrass on the relative rankings of different ryegrass cultivars. The objective of the investigation reported in this series was to test whether the relative yield rankings of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars representing the range in phenotypes now available to New Zealand farmers as a result of recent breeding differed when those cultivars were grown in monocultures (as per standard protocols for cultivar yield trialling systems such as the National Forage Variety Trials) versus mixtures of grass and clover. This paper presents the rationale for the investigation by reviewing developments in perennial ryegrass breeding and evaluation in the context of grass-clover relationships in grazed pasture systems. The papers that follow report results from a multi-year, multi-site investigation comparing the yield, nutritive value and other productivity-related variables of eight perennial ryegrass cultivars grown with or without white clover (monoculture versus mixture respectively) at two levels of nitrogen fertiliser. Agriculture is fundamental for food production, and microbiomes support agriculture through multiple essential ecosystem services. Despite the importance of individual (i.e., niche specific) agricultural microbiomes, microbiome interactions across niches are not well-understood. To observe the linkages between nearby agricultural microbiomes, multiple approaches (16S, 18S, and ITS) were used to inspect a broad coverage of niche microbiomes. Here we examined agricultural microbiome responses to 3 different nitrogen treatments (0, 150, and 300 kg/ha/yr) in soil and tracked linked responses in other neighbouring farm niches (rumen, faecal, white clover leaf, white clover root, rye grass leaf, and rye grass root). Nitrogen treatment had little impact on microbiome structure or composition across niches, but drastically reduced the microbiome network connectivity in soil. Networks of 16S microbiomes were the most sensitive to nitrogen treatment across amplicons, where ITS microbiome networks were the least responsive. Nitrogen enrichment in soil altered soil and the neighbouring microbiome networks, supporting our hypotheses that nitrogen treatment in soil altered microbiomes in soil and in nearby niches. This suggested that agricultural microbiomes across farm niches are ecologically interactive. Legume-based forage plant mixtures are known to increase biomass production over the mixture species grown as pure stands (overyielding), which has partly been attributed to enhanced nitrogen availability by legumes. However, the relative importance of underlying processes of these positive diversity effects and their drivers are not fully understood. Here we assessed if outcome and causes of diversity effects depend on the legume-species genetic identity. Over five years, we cultivated different white clover (Trifolium repens) populations, a grass and forb species in pure stands and clover-based mixtures and recorded biomass yield. Complementarity and selection effects of mixtures and relative yields of mixture species were calculated based on both unfertilized and nitrogen-fertilized non-leguminous pure stands. Results showed that the clover population altered the overall strength of diversity effects as well as the direction and magnitude of their temporal trends, at least for the grass component of mixtures. Differences in diversity effects between clover populations diminished when fertilized instead of unfertilized non-leguminous pure stands were considered. Hence, a part of these differences likely results from dissimilar effects of clover populations on nitrogen availability. Fifteen lambs from a flock of 1,000, 5-month-old Romney lambs in the Manawatū region of New Zealand, developed unusual postural and gait abnormalities during the summer of 2020. In mid-January, the lambs were grazing a raphanobrassica crop (xRaphanobrassica; Brassica oleracea x Raphanus sativus) but were removed from this crop soon after as they developed dermal lesions on the pinnae consistent with photosensitisation (colloquially known as "rape scald"). The lambs were placed onto a shaded paddock containing a pasture of predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens). One week following removal from the crop (late January), the 15 lambs developed abnormal postures and gaits that were described by farm staff as "neurological" and "swayback-like". From a distance, all 15 lambs exhibited remarkably similar abnormal posture and gait whereby their weight was borne on their carpi, and they appeared to crawl while walking due to crouched hindquarters and prominent lordosis. Of the affected lambs, five were submitted for clinical examination. All five had normal vital signs. The results of neurological examinations were within normal limits. In response to palpation of the dorsum, the lambs performed an exaggerated and unusual dipping motion, particularly when pressure was applied over the lumbar spine. Parting of the fleece over the dorsum revealed thickened, indurated skin that cracked and tore easily. The shorn pelt of a euthanised lamb revealed a large (100 cm × 40 cm), locally extensive, irregular ovoid region of the skin of the dorsum that was markedly thickened, indurated and crusted. Impression smears of the lesions revealed long filamentous chains of plump coccoid bacteria separated by transverse and longitudinal septa, consistent with Dermatophilus congolensis. Histopathology of the lesions revealed severe, chronic-active, locally extensive, necrosuppurative dermatitis with marked acanthosis, orthokeratotic and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, ulceration, filamentous bacteria and coccoid zoospores. Cutaneous dermatophilosis due to Dermatophilus congolensis. Painful dermal lesions due to severe dermatophilosis of the dorsal skin of sheep are capable of causing postural and gait abnormalities that may be misinterpreted as signs of neurological abnormality. Nine forage spices were used as the materials to study the effect of green cover on soil fertility of apple orchard in Jiaodong area. The soil samples were taken from 0~200 mm and 200~400 mm soil layers to determine the content of soil organic matter, available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and the annual average accumulation for 4 consecutive years. The result showed that, Legume forage White clover and Alfalfa had the most significant effect on improving soil fertility, followed by gramineous forage Xiangyun ryegrass and Gentleman ryegrass. Turf star bluegrass could significantly improve soil organic matter after years of sowing. Dynasty tall fescue, Turf star bluegrass and White clover can promote the accumulation of available nitrogen. White clover and Alfalfa can promote the accumulation of available phosphorus. White clover and Xiangyun ryegrass can promote the accumulation of available potassium.Therefore, White clover, Alfalfa, Xiangyun ryegrass, Gentleman ryegrass and Turf star bluegrass can be considered as the alternative varieties of apple orchard forage in Jiaodong area. The different forages can be used for different purposes, and mixing sowing leguminous forage with gramineous forage may be an ideal combination to improve the orchard ecosystem and biological interaction. The sustainability of small-scale dairy systems in the highlands of Central Mexico is limited by the economic scale due to a high dependence of external inputs, particularly commercial concentrates, as well as the use of low-quality straws that result in high feeding costs which result in low profitability. Grazing of irrigated cultivated pastures based on temperate grasses reduces feeding costs, improves profitability and hence the sustainability of these systems. However, pasture species must be assessed for their adaptation to the agroecological and management conditions of small-scale dairy farms. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate bromegrass (Bromus catharticus Vahl cv Matua) as a pasture resource in comparison with two varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L cv Bargala and cv Payday) and Festulolium (cv Spring Green), in two participatory on-farm experiments in spring and autumn. The first experiment (EXP 1) compared Matua bromegrass (MBRG) with Bargala perennial ryegrass (BPRG), on their own or as a 50:50 mixture of the two grasses. The second experiment (EXP 2) compared Matua bromegrass (MBRG) with Pay Day perennial ryegrass (PDRG) and Festulolium cv Spring green (SGFL). All pastures in both experiments were associated with white clover (Trifolium repens cv Ladino). There were no statistically significant differences found in EXP 1 (P>0.05) for animal production variables with a mean milk yield of 19.41±0.14 kg/cow/day. On the other hand the second experiment showed significant differences (P<0.05) in milk yield for Matua bromegrass (16.7 kg cow/day), 9% less tan for Pay Day perennial ryegrass and Spring Green festulolium. It was concluded that Matua bromegrass showed similar performance to Bargala perennial ryegrass in spring but less than Pay Day perennial ryegrass and Spring Green festulolium in autumn. It is necessary to further investigate if differences were due to a season effect in order to fully establish the value and role of bromegrass as a viable pasture grass species for irrigated pastures in small-scale dairy systems. This experiment, implemented at a Southland site representative of the lower South Island, New Zealand, and monitored for three full years from 2012/2013 to 2015/2016, was one of four throughout New Zealand that investigated the yield and nutritive value rankings of perennial ryegrass cultivars sown with or without white clover and with high (225 kg N/ha/annum) or low (50 kg N/ha/annum) application rates of nitrogen fertiliser. High inputs of nitrogen (N) fertiliser increased annual total dry matter (DM) yields and seasonal yield in 12 out of 18 measurement occasions. Adding white clover increased both annual dry matter yield and seasonal yield in 7 out of 18 measurement occasions. An interaction between clover and N input occurred on 10 occasions. Over time, the low N minus clover treatment became progressively lower yielding compared with the other three treatments. Ryegrass cultivar by clover interactions occurred in the latter half of the experiment. When analysed using ryegrass characteristics, early- and late-heading ryegrass cultivars produced similar yields when sown without clover, but late-heading ryegrass cultivars had a higher yield than early-heading pastures when sown with white clover (P < .001). Tetraploid ryegrasses had lower yields than diploid ryegrasses when sown without clover (P = .001). This difference was reduced when white clover was included. There was no significant interaction with ryegrass morphology when sown with white clover, as dense ryegrass cultivars always had a higher yield than open ryegrass cultivars (P = .005). Interactions occurred between N input levels and ryegrass cultivar. These occurred in early spring or late spring of each year. Analysis by ryegrass characteristics identified consistent interactions. Ryegrass cultivars with a late-heading date were higher yielding than early-heading cultivars at low N inputs (P = .029), but they were not different at high N inputs. Diploid and tetraploid ryegrass cultivars were similar with low N inputs, but diploid cultivars out-yielded tetraploid cultivars at high N inputs (P = .005). Significant interactions between N inputs and white clover addition affected herbage nutritive value but this did not extend to consistent interactions with ryegrass cultivar. Invertebrate pest numbers were generally low and unlikely to have influenced clover/ryegrass interactions or cultivar ranking. Background and aims: Nitrogen balances are useful tools to increase our understanding of soil N processes and the efficiency of plants in taking up animal urine-N. This study aimed to investigate the effect of forage type on the fate of autumn-applied urine-N (700 kg N ha). Methods: In a 17-month lysimeter study the recoveries of N in herbage, leachate, nitrous oxide, and soil + roots (at the end of the trial) were determined for three forage types: perennial ryegrass-white clover (RGWC, Lolium perenne L. -Trifolium repens L.), Italian ryegrass (Italian RG, Lolium multiflorum Lam.), and lucerne ( Medicago sativa L.) under simulated autumn grazing. Results: We recovered 81.5-85.5% of the N applied in the urine. Italian RG had the greatest amount of urine-N recovered in the herbage (49.5%) and the least recovered in leachate (16.8%) making it the most efficient of the three forages for utilizing urine-N. For RGWC, herbage and leachate recoveries were 40.1% and 23.7% , respectively. Lucerne was the least efficient with recoveries of N in herbage and leachate equaling 18.4% and 52.5%, respectively. The effect of soil environment on cultivars compatibility was evaluated in a cutting field experiment during two growing seasons. A factorial combination of four perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PR) and three white clover (Trifolium repens L.; WC) cultivars were grown on deep (DSS) and shallow (SSS) soils under irrigated conditions. Measurements included herbage accumulation (HA), root attributes, leaf chlorophyll content, and interception of photosynthetic radiation. The PR–WC compatibility was affected by soil environment. In both soil sites and growing seasons, the WC + PR herbage accumulations were similar but with different PR and WC partial accumulation. In DSS, the partial PR HA was 22% less than that observed in SSS; the partial WC HA was almost twice in DSS relative to SSS. In SSS, the WC stolon growing point numbers, stolon length, and stolon biomass increased 60, 88, and 94% relative to DSS, respectively. In the same way, the mixed sward increased root biomass and root length density, which was considered as a mechanism for improving plant resources capture from the soil. At cultivar level, the PR–WC compatibility was affected mainly by WC cultivar, and the effect of PR cultivar was fairly weak. The medium‐leaved WC cultivar 'Will' showed the greatest compatibility with PR, particularly with cultivar 'Bealey'. These results are valuable when designing new management strategies for mixed sward production in marginal environments. Modern cultivars of PR have capacity for adapting to marginal environments; however, it is necessary to improve the competitive ability of WC to capture soil resources under marginal soil conditions. Molecular characterization of genetically modified plants can provide crucial information for the development of detection and identification methods, to comply with traceability, and labeling requirements prior to commercialization. Detailed description of the genetic modification was previously a challenging step in the safety assessment, since it required the use of laborious and time-consuming techniques. In this study an accurate, simple, and fast method was developed for molecular characterization of genetically modified (GM) plants, following a user-friendly workflow for researchers with limited bioinformatic capabilities. Three GM events from a diverse array of crop species—perennial ryegrass, white clover, and canola—were used to test the approach that exploits long-read sequencing by the MinION device, from Oxford Nanopore Technologies. The method delivered a higher degree of resolution of the transgenic events within the host genome than has previously been possible with the standard Illumina short-range sequencing strategies. The flanking sequences, copy number, and presence of backbone sequences, and overall transgene insertion structure were determined for each of the plant genomes, with the additional identification of moderate-sized secondary insertions that would have previously been missed. The proposed workflow takes only about 1 week from DNA extraction to analyzed result, and the method will complement the existing approaches for molecular characterization of GM plants, since it makes the process faster, simpler, and more cost-effective. Objective: Evaluate the effect of agricultural lime and dolomite in a perennial ryegrass cv. Tetragrain pasture associated with white clover cv. Ladino and red clover cv. Kenland. Methodology: Three soil amendment treatments were established in a perennial ryegrass pasture with white and red clover using a split-plot experiment design. The treatments were: T1 = control (without soil amendment), T2 = agricultural lime, and T3 = dolomite. The evaluated variables were pasture height, herbaceous mass (HM), dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM), and metabolizable energy (ME). Results: Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were observed for experimental periods in pasture height, DM, CP, ADF, OM, IVDDM, and ME. For treatments, there were significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in pasture height, DM, CP, and OM. The interaction between experimental periods (P) and treatments (T) was not significant for any variable (P > 0.05). Regarding the soil chemical composition results, we observed a decrease in pH at the end of the experiment; however, there was an increase in Ca, Mg, and total N, and a decrease in Al. Limitations/implications: Given the low impact of the treatments in most of the evaluated variables, it is necessary to expand the study to different doses, type of soil amendments, and handling conditions to control the impact of the producers' practices in pastures. Aims Research on the effects of extreme rainfall events on ecosystem function has primarily focussed on drought or flooding events, which usually include changes to mean or total rainfall, annually or over a season. However, less is known about the effects of increased rainfall variability without change to mean or total amounts. We investigated the effects of increased variation of water supply on shoot and root biomass as well as the distribution of root biomass of four grassland plant species, grown in monoculture and mixture communities. Methods Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. shallow-rooting grass), chicory (Cichorium intybus L. deep-rooting forb), white clover (Trifolium repens L. shallow-rooting legume) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L. deep-rooting legume) were established in mesocosms. Four plants of the same species were grown in monoculture communities and one of each species grown in four-species communities. Water supply was manipulated such that; compared with a baseline level with low variation in water supply, there was a treatment with medium variation (±40%) and another with high variation (±80%). Shoot and root biomass were measured, and vertical root distribution models fitted. Important Findings Compared with the low variation treatment, shoot biomass was significantly reduced under high variation for white clover, red clover and four-species communities. Under all conditions, four-species communities produced more shoot and root biomass than predicted by species performance in monoculture (overyielding). Under increased water variation, chicory monocultures allocated a higher proportion of root biomass to deeper soil layers while the total root biomass of white clover monocultures was significantly reduced. These results indicate that increased variability of water supply can negatively affect the shoot and root biomass production of single and multi-species grasslands. The SHPs information is crucial to agricultural water management. The objective of this study using paired sites was to investigate the effects of land use on SHPs in two contrasting soil orders. Soil water retention curves and K ns at three soil depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm) were measured under two land uses (pasture, consisting of a rye grass [ Lolium perenne L.] and white clover [ Trifolium repens L.] mix, and maize [ Zea mays L. ] cropping > 10 years) in Waikato, New Zealand. For each land use, two soil orders with contrasting soil structural vulnerability were selected: less vulnerable Allophanic soil and more vulnerable Gley soil. Compared with pasture, maize cropping reduced macroporosity, readily available water capacity and K ns of 0–30 cm, and the effect was greater in the deep layer (20–30 cm). This indicated that maize cropping practices result in greater structural degradation to soils compared with pasture, which include the potential for greater subsoil compaction. There was no land use by soil order interaction effect on SHPs, suggesting that the relative SHP degradation under maize cropping compared with pasture grazing was not associated with soil structural vulnerability. In New Zealand, a commonly sown pasture combination is perennial ryegrass with white clover. The hydrothermal time model (HTT) was used to quantify germination under different temperature (T) and water potential (WP) conditions for white clover 'Nomad' and perennial ryegrass 'Stellar AR1'. Seeds were germinated in vitro under a range of T × WP combinations, and HTT models were fitted to germination time course data. Rapid germination of white clover under optimum T and WP was reflected by a much lower value for its HTT constant compared with perennial ryegrass (10.8 vs 80.7 MPa °C d). However, the lower base water potential for perennial ryegrass (−1.29 vs −0.495 MPa) and a higher threshold temperature for thermoinhibition (21.8 vs 18.3°C), meant that predicted perennial ryegrass germination was more resilient in warm dry conditions. Current ecological trends for production of forage for livestock indicate a need for small usage of fertilisers while increasing productivity. The study aimed to assess yield and interactions of selected Lolium and Festulolium species grown in mixtures with Trifolium repens and fertilised with NS, regarding mutual interactions based on available indicators. A two-year field study (2016-2017) was carried out in southern Poland and the research objects were designed on degraded chernozems. The highest yield was observed for mixtures: L. multiflorum + T. repens and L. × boucheanum + T. repens sown in the proportion 50 : 50, fertilised with N50S15. The mean dry matter yield was higher in the 1st year of the study, in all variants of fertilisation and types of mixtures. The land equivalent ratio differed for species in individual objects, for individual cuts and study years, and was most often higher than 1.0, which points to a positive interference between species in mixtures. Also, the competitive ratio index was often higher than 1.0, which means that grass species were more competitive than white clover. Physical and environmental vulnerability analysis conducted for the Illangama watershed located in Ecuador's Andean highlands, shows deteriorated soil quality and declining crop productivity. These problems are caused by soil erosion in steep slopes and inappropriate soil management practices. Research projects conducted from 2011 to 2014 adopted and examined the feasibility of conservation agriculture practices for potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), oat (Avena sativa L.) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), bean (Vicia faba L.), and a mixture of pastures (annual ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum Lam.], perennial ryegrass [L. perenne L.], orchardgrass [Dactylis glomerata L.], white clover[Trifolium repens L.], and red clover [T. pratense L.]). The practices included surface water deviation ditches, reduced tillage, residue retention, and application of N, all within an improved rotation. The study examined crop yields and economic returns in an effort to identify the best practices. Results indicate that crop productivity and net (of cost of production) benefits of the system were increased as much as 25 and 24%, respectively, using a feasible conservation agriculture system compared to conventional practices. This study shows that conservation agriculture increases yields and saves on production costs due to less tillage. We also found that N fertilization with these conservation agriculture practices increases yields and net returns. This study concludes that conservation agriculture practices are good alternatives for these high-altitude Andean soils. Increasing plant species diversity in grasslands may improve productivity and stability of yields. In a field experiment, we investigated the herbage dry-matter ( DM) yield and crude protein content of two-species swards of perennial ryegrass-white clover ( Lolium perenne L.- Trifolium repens L.) and three-species swards of ryegrass-white clover with red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.). Five different managements represented cutting, grazing and combinations thereof, with different slurry fertilization treatments in 1- to 4-year-old swards. The three-species mixture out-yielded the two-species mixture in years 1 and 2. Across all 4 years, yields were 8-10% higher in cut swards. Inclusion of red clover increased the yields of clover across the 4 years by 51% without fertilizer and by 90% when fertilized. Responses to slurry fertilization were similar in both mixtures and were mainly independent of sward age. There was a complementary effect over the season and across managements. Red clover dominated in the first and third cuts; white clover dominated in the second and fourth cuts. Red clover dominated in cut swards and white clover in grazed swards. Future prospects of the inclusion of red clover in sown swards are discussed. These may include higher nitrogen-use efficiency in ruminants, increased soil fertility and improved sward flexibility to cope with changing managements. Stress management is considered as an important factor in nowadays landscape. Therefore this research was conducted using a factorial experiment based on a randomized completely design with regulated deficit irrigation at four levels (100, 75, 50, and 25% of lawn irrigation requirement) and three replicates to evaluate some biochemical and physiological traits on four groundcover plants (Lolium perenne, Potentilla spp., Trifolium repens and Frankinia spp.) with the potential use in landscape. Results showed that Frankinia spp. and 75% lawn irrigation requirement bears the highest proline content with same amount (0.84 mg/g fresh weight) and on the other hand highest (32.61 mg/g fresh weight) and lowest (15.95 mg/g fresh weight) chlorophyll content was shown in control (irrigation treatments) and Frankinia spp., respectively. For total soluble carbohydrates content, highest amount (1.54 mg/g fresh weight) belongs to Lolium perenne whereas the lowest (0.79 mg/g fresh weight) belongs to Trifolium repens. Trifolium repens also had the most DPPH free radical-scavenging assay (75.05%) among species. In general, regulated deficit irrigation affects different biochemical characteristics of examined groundcover plants significantly, but as a managing method applying it to below the damaging point for landscape plants can be a good method for water consumption management in this manner.
