Due to their short orbital periods and relatively high-flux ratios, irradiated brown dwarfs in binaries with white dwarfs offer better opportunities to study irradiated atmospheres than hot Jupiters, which have lower planet-to-star flux ratios. WD1032+011 is an eclipsing, tidally locked white dwarf–brown dwarf binary with a 9950 K white dwarf orbited by a 69.7 M |$_{\text{Jup}}$| brown dwarf in a 0.09 d orbit. We present time-resolved Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 spectrophotometric data of WD1032+011. We isolate the phase-dependent spectra of WD1032+011B, finding a 210 K difference in brightness temperature between the dayside and nightside. The spectral type of the brown dwarf is identified as L1 peculiar, with atmospheric retrievals and comparison to field brown dwarfs showing evidence for a cloud-free atmosphere. The retrieved temperature of the dayside is 1748 |$^{+66}_{-67}$|  K, with a nightside temperature of 1555 |$^{+76}_{-62}$|  K, showing an irradiation-driven temperature contrast coupled with inefficient heat redistribution from the dayside to the nightside. The brown dwarf radius is inflated, likely due to the constant irradiation from the white dwarf, making it the only known inflated brown dwarf in an eclipsing white dwarf–brown dwarf binary. Brown dwarfs (BDs) in ultra-short-period orbits around white dwarfs (WDs) offer a unique opportunity to study the properties of tidally locked, fast-rotating (1–3 hr), and highly irradiated atmospheres. Here we present phase-resolved spectrophotometry of the WD–BD binary SDSS 1557, which is the fifth WD–BD binary in our six-object sample. Using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 Near-infrared G141 instrument, the 1.1–1.7 μ m phase curves show rotational modulations with semiamplitudes of 10.5% ± 0.1%. We observe a wavelength-dependent amplitude, with longer wavelengths producing larger amplitudes, while no wavelength-dependent phase shifts were identified. The phase-resolved extracted BD spectra exhibit steep slopes and are nearly featureless. A simple radiative energy redistribution atmospheric model re-creates the hemisphere-integrated brightness temperatures at three distinct phases and finds evidence for weak redistribution efficiency. Our model also predicts a higher inclination than previously published. We find that SDSS 1557B, the second most irradiated BD in our sample, is likely dominated by clouds on the nightside, whereas the featureless dayside spectrum is likely dominated by H− opacity and a temperature inversion, much like the other highly irradiated BD EPIC 2122B. With infrared flux contrasts larger than typically seen in hot Jupiter, tidally locked white dwarf–brown dwarf binaries offer a superior opportunity to investigate atmospheric processes in irradiated atmospheres. NLTT5306 is such a system, with a M BD = 52 ± 3 M Jup brown dwarf, orbiting a T eff = 7756 ± 35 K white dwarf with an ultra-short period of ∼102 minutes. We present Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 spectroscopic phase curves of NLTT5306, consisting of 47 spectra from 1.1 to 1.7 μ m with an average signal-to-noise ratio ∼ 65 per wavelength. We extracted the phase-resolved spectra of the brown dwarf NLTT5306B, finding a small <100 K day–night temperature difference (∼5% of the average day-side temperature). Our best-fit model phase curves revealed a complex wavelength-dependence on amplitudes and relative phase offsets, suggesting longitudinal–vertical atmospheric structure. The night-side spectrum was well fit by a cloudy, nonirradiated atmospheric model while the day side was best matched by a cloudy, weakly irradiated model. Additionally, we created a simple radiative energy redistribution model of the atmosphere and found evidence for efficient day-to-night heat redistribution and a moderately high Bond albedo. We also discovered an internal heat flux much higher than expected given the published system age, leading to an age reassessment that resulted in NLTT5306B most likely being much younger. We find that NLTT5306B is the only known significantly irradiated brown dwarf where the global temperature structure is not dominated by external irradiation, but rather its own internal heat. We present the confirmation of SDSS J222551.65+001637.7AB as a closely separated, resolved, white dwarf–brown dwarf binary. We have obtained spectroscopy from GNIRS and seeing-limited Ks -band imaging from NIRI on Gemini North. The target is spatially resolved into its constituent components: a 10926 ± 246 K white dwarf, with log  g = 8.214 ± 0.168 and a mass of 0.66 |$^{+0.11}_{-0.06}$|  M⊙, and an L4 brown dwarf companion, which are separated by 0.9498 ± 0.0022 arcsec. We derive the fundamental properties of the companion from the Sonora–Bobcat evolutionary models, finding a mass of 25–53  M Jup and a radius of 0.101–0.128 R⊙ for the brown dwarf, at a confidence level of 1σ. We use wdwarfdate to determine the age of the binary as |$1.97^{+4.41}_{-0.76}$|  Gyr. A kinematic analysis shows that this binary is likely a member of the thick disc. The distance to the binary is 218 |$^{+14}_{-13}$|  pc, and hence the projected separation of the binary is 207 |$^{+13}_{-12}$|  au. Whilst the white dwarf progenitor was on the main sequence the binary separation would have been 69 ± 5 au. SDSS J222551.65+001637.7AB is the third closest spatially resolved white dwarf–brown dwarf binary after GD 165AB and PHL 5038AB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Spitzer follow-up imaging of 95 candidate extremely cold brown dwarfs discovered by the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, which uses visually perceived motion in multiepoch Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) images to identify previously unrecognized substellar neighbors to the Sun. We measure Spitzer [3.6]–[4.5] color to phototype our brown dwarf candidates, with an emphasis on pinpointing the coldest and closest Y dwarfs within our sample. The combination of WISE and Spitzer astrometry provides quantitative confirmation of the transverse motion of 75 of our discoveries. Nine of our motion-confirmed objects have best-fit linear motions larger than 1″ yr−1; our fastest-moving discovery is WISEA J155349.96+693355.2 (μ ≈ 2.″15 yr−1), a possible T-type subdwarf. We also report a newly discovered wide-separation (∼400 au) T8 comoving companion to the white dwarf LSPM J0055+5948 (the fourth such system to be found), plus a candidate late T companion to the white dwarf LSR J0002+6357 at 5.′5 projected separation (∼8700 au if associated). Among our motion-confirmed targets, five have Spitzer colors most consistent with spectral type Y. Four of these five have exceptionally red Spitzer colors suggesting types of Y1 or later, adding considerably to the small sample of known objects in this especially valuable low-temperature regime. We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet and ground-based optical observations of the hot, metal-rich white dwarf GD 394. Extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) observations in 1992–1996 revealed a 1.15 d periodicity with a 25 per cent amplitude, hypothesized to be due to metals in a surface accretion spot. We obtained phase resolved HST /Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph high resolution far-ultraviolet spectra of GD 394 that sample the entire period, along with a large body of supplementary data. We find no evidence for an accretion spot, with the flux, accretion rate, and radial velocity of GD 394 constant over the observed time-scales at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. We speculate that the spot may have no longer been present when our observations were obtained, or that the EUV variability is being caused by an otherwise undetected evaporating planet. The atmospheric parameters obtained from separate fits to optical and ultraviolet spectra are inconsistent, as is found for multiple hot white dwarfs. We also detect non-photospheric, high ionisation absorption lines of multiple volatile elements, which could be evidence for a hot plasma cocoon surrounding the white dwarf. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nucleus of Hen 2-428 is a short orbital period (4.2 h) spectroscopic binary, whose status as potential supernovae type Ia progenitor has raised some controversy in the literature. We present preliminary results of a thorough analysis of this interesting system, which combines quantitative non-local thermodynamic (non-LTE) equilibrium spectral modelling, radial velocity analysis, multi-band light curve fitting, and state-of-the art stellar evolutionary calculations. Importantly, we find that the dynamical system mass that is derived by using all available He II lines does not exceed the Chandrasekhar mass limit. Furthermore, the individual masses of the two central stars are too small to lead to an SN Ia in case of a dynamical explosion during the merger process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
