Loss of large-bodied wildlife, typically from hunting, degrades the ecological processes in tropical forests that sequester and store carbon. Abstract

The Wildlife Conservation Society, with a view to protecting and preserving wildlife, awarded several grants in 1950 for the study of wildlife. In 1966 biologists such as George Schaller, Thomas Struhsaker and Roger Payne undertook studies of different species of animals in various parts of the world. Governments have approached the Society to formulate projects such as Rwanda's Nyungwe and Uganda's Kible forests, Congo's Nouabale-Ndoki region and Central America's Pasco Pantera program.

Abstract

In this article, the authors discuss the decline of tiger and ways on how to conserve the species. The authors cite overhunting and loss and fragmentation of habitat as the significant factors that affect the decline of tigers. The authors note that Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will host the Tiger Summit in Russia in November 2010 to culminate the efforts of the Global Tiger Initiative (GTI). They suggest that protecting source sites is helpful in reversing tiger declines.
