We introduce an aerodynamic rotor concept for an offshore wind turbine which is tailored for an increased power feed-in at low wind speeds by a substantial increase in the rotor diameter while maintaining the rated power. The main objective of the conceptual design is to limit the steady-inflow loads (blade flapwise root bending moment (RBM) and thrust) to the maximum values of a reference turbine. The outer part of the blade (i.e. outer 30 % span) is designed for a higher design tip speed ratio (TSR) and a lower axial induction than the inner part. By operating at the high TSR in light winds, the slender outer part fully contributes to the increased power capture. In stronger winds the TSR is reduced and the torque generation is shifted to the inner section of the rotor. Moreover, the blade design efficiently reduces the power losses when the flapwise RBM is limited through peak shaving, below rated wind speed. This is of high importance, given the wind speed distribution at offshore sites. The characteristics of the rotor are first investigated with stationary blade element momentum simulations and further analysed with aeroelastic simulations, considering the flexibility of blades and tower to show that a structural design is feasible even for a blade of this size and complexity. The economic revenue and the cost of valued energy of the turbine are estimated and compared to the IEA 15 MW offshore reference turbine, considering a fictitious wind-speed-dependent feed-in price. Our results for the turbine concept with an increase in rotor diameter by 36 % show that the revenue can be increased by 30 % and the cost of valued energy can be reduced by 16 % compared to the reference turbine. Wind farm flow control (WFFC) is a topic of interest at several research institutes and industry and certification agencies worldwide. For reliable performance assessment of the technology, the efficiency and the capability of the models applied to WFFC should be carefully evaluated. To address that, the FarmConners consortium has launched a common benchmark for code comparison under controlled operation to demonstrate its potential benefits, such as increased power production. The benchmark builds on available data sets from previous field campaigns, wind tunnel experiments, and high-fidelity simulations. Within that database, four blind tests are defined and 13 participants in total have submitted results for the analysis of single and multiple wakes under WFFC. Here, we present Part I of the FarmConners benchmark results, focusing on the blind tests with large-scale rotors. The observations and/or the model outcomes are evaluated via direct power comparisons at the upstream and downstream turbine(s), as well as the power gain at the wind farm level under wake steering control strategy. Additionally, wake loss reduction is also analysed to support the power performance comparison, where relevant. The majority of the participating models show good agreement with the observations or the reference high-fidelity simulations, especially for lower degrees of upstream misalignment and narrow wake sector. However, the benchmark clearly highlights the importance of the calibration procedure for control-oriented models. The potential effects of limited controlled operation data in calibration are particularly visible via frequent model mismatch for highly deflected wakes, as well as the power loss at the controlled turbine(s). In addition to the flow modelling, the sensitivity of the predicted WFFC benefits to the turbine representation and the implementation of the controller is also underlined. The FarmConners benchmark is the first of its kind to bring a wide variety of data sets, control settings, and model complexities for the (initial) assessment of farm flow control benefits. Redirecting the wake from an upstream wind turbine by yawing its rotor can reduce the negative impact of the wake on a downstream turbine. The present research investigated wind turbine wake behaviour for three yaw angles T 30;0;30U at different inflow turbulence levels and shear profiles under controlled conditions. Experiments were conducted using a model wind turbine with 0.6m diameter (D) in a large wind tunnel. A shortrange lidar WindScanner was used to map the wake with high spatial and temporal resolution in vertical, crossstream planes at different downstream locations and in a horizontal plane at hub height. The lidar WindScanner enabled fast measurements at multiple locations in comparison to the standard hot-wire measurements. The flow structures and the energy dissipation rate of the wake were measured from 1 up to 10D, and for one inflow case up to 16D, downstream of the turbine rotor. A strong dependency of the wake characteristics on both the yaw angle and the inflow conditions was observed. In addition, the curled wake that develops under yaw misalignment due to the counter-rotating vortex pair was more pronounced with a boundary layer (sheared) inflow condition than for uniform inflow with different turbulence levels. Furthermore, the lidar velocity data and calculated quantities such as the energy dissipation rate compared favourably with hot-wire data from previous experiments with a similar inflow condition and wind turbine model in the same facility, lending credibility to the measurement technique and methodology used here. The results of this measurement campaign provided a deeper understanding of the development of the wake for different yaw angles and inflow conditions which can help improve wake models. Owing to the aerodynamic conversion process, wind turbines exhibit a nonlinear behavior and encounter turbulent operating conditions that demand well-defined closed-loop dynamics to withstand accumulated loading over the lifetime. Wind excitation is the main disturbance and driving force for the system and determines the necessary operating strategy, but it usually represents an unmeasurable quantity. In this study, we used a linear-matrix-inequalities-based control and observer design to operate a variable-speed, variable-pitch wind turbine in a wind tunnel experiment at different reproducible inflow conditions while relying on a wind speed estimate obtained from a disturbance observer. The computational complexity of the stability framework incorporating the reconstruction of the unknown wind speed is reduced by exploiting characteristics of the modeling approach based on a convex combination of linear submodels. The assumption used in the proposed stability consideration is evaluated based on measurement data. We introduced an extended operating range compared to the commonly considered operating trajectory of wind turbines in the control design. A controller based on Takagi–Sugeno modeling is used to operate the turbine at challenging power tracking requirements demonstrating the capability to support fast stabilization of the electrical grid while discussing the loading and operational constraints observed during the experiments. Abstract: An aeroelastically scaled model of a wind turbine is described, featuring active individual blade pitch and torque control. The model, governed by supervision and control systems similar to those of a real wind turbine, is capable of simulating steady conditions and transient maneuvers in the boundary layer test section of the wind tunnel of the Politecnico di Milano. Expanding the classical scope of wind tunnel models, the present experimental facility enables applications ranging from aerodynamics to aeroelasticity and control. After a description of the model design and of its main characteristics, several applications are presented. Results are shown for the validation of a wind misalignment observer, for the optimization of the open-loop pitch profile used during emergency shutdowns, for the control in wake interference conditions of two models, and for active load alleviation by higher harmonic individual blade pitch control. Results demonstrate the potential of the proposed experimental facility to enable non-standard observations in the controlled environment of the wind tunnel, beyond the classical purely aerodynamic ones.
