Spectrum efficiency is a critical performance metric in wireless communications due to an increasing demand for radio spectrum to support high data rate applications. Direct sequence spread spectrum technology enables a code division multiple access (CDMA) system a strong anti-interference capability but with a relatively low spectrum efficiency. To address this issue, complementary coded scrambling multiple access (CCSMA) (X. Liu et al., in 2018) was proposed to use three-dimensional (space-time-frequency) resources for performance enhancement. However, in a CCSMA system, if the number of multipath returns is larger than the number of transmit (Tx) antennas, a code reuse problem occurs to degrade bit error rate performance significantly. This work designs a new scrambling code, namely generalized complementary coded scrambling multiple access (GCCSMA) codes, to overcome the code reuse problem in CCSMA. GCCSMA uses complementary codes, scrambling modulation, and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques jointly, which works well even in multipath channels with more paths than the number of Tx antennas. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) underlay cellular communication plays an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond communications and its security issues attract a lot of attention. Physical layer security, which explores channel characteristics to protect wireless communications, is very attractive due to its low latency. This paper focuses on secrecy capacity maximization in V2V underlay cellular communications, where the secrecy capacity of vehicular user equipments (VUEs) is optimized first, followed by sum proportional fairness function optimization for both VUEs and cellular user equipments (CUEs). The optimization problems can be solved in two sub-problems, e.g., power and subcarrier allocation problems. The power allocation can be done with the first strategy using a one-dimensional searching algorithm, whereas a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to solve the second optimization problem. In addition, as VUEs share uplink resources with CUEs, the co-channel interference exists and the subcarrier allocation sub-problem is a 3D search problem, which is solved by a two-step iterative Hungarian algorithm (IHA). This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview on PHY layer security assisted ICV networks. Beginning with a discussion from a general perspective of the ICV network architecture, this work summarizes the major security threats faced by ICV networks. To achieve confidential data transmission with a low latency and a high data rate, several physical layer security schemes are surveyed in this article, which include RRM, cooperative jamming, multi-antenna technologies, and PHY-layer key generation. In addition, the performances of the aforementioned schemes are compared in terms of different aspects, followed by a discussion on some major challenges that need to be tackled in the implementation of ICV networks. Ultra-dense network (UDN) is one of the enabling technologies in the fifth generation (5G) wireless communications, and the application of joint transmission (JT) is extremely important to deal with severe inter-cell interferences in UDNs. However, most of the current works done in performance analysis on JT schemes in the literature were based largely on simulation results due to the difficulties in quantitatively identifying the number of desirable and interfering transmitters in a UDN setup. In this work, we are motivated to propose an analytical approach to investigate the performance of JT schemes with a unified approach based on stochastic geometry, which is in particular useful for studying different JT schemes as well as conventional transmission schemes without JT. Using the proposed approach, we can unveil the statistical characteristics (i.e., expectation, moment generation function, and variance) of desirable signal and interference powers of a given user equipment (UE), and thus the system performances, such as average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and area spectral efficiency, can be evaluated analytically. This paper investigates an integrated wireless communication system including non-orthogonal multiple access, full-duplex relaying, and energy harvesting techniques (named as EH-FD-NOMA). In this scheme, an energy-limited full-duplex relay harvests energy from a source at the first stage. Then, the relay detects the superimposed signal from the source and transmits the decoded signal to destination. Closed-form outage probabilities and ergodic rates at the relay and destination are derived. The fifth generation communication systems aim to achieve higher capacity and more user access. Full-duplex (FD) communication can achieve twice the spectral efficiency of the conventional half-duplex systems under ideal conditions, and FD relay is a common application of FD technology. In this paper, we propose a modified signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) precoding scheme for the FD multiuser MIMO relay system, in which the self-interference (SI) of the relay is considered. In contrast to block diagonalization (BD) precoding and zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, SLNR precoding does not have an antenna dimension limitation, which enables it to support more antennas and users. In addition, SLNR precoding balances the interference and noise of a system, whereas BD precoding and ZF precoding only consider the interference. The numerical results show that the proposed SLNR precoding scheme can achieve better performance with low SI. This paper studies the issues on wireless networks virtualization in terms of two important performance metrics, i.e., energy efficiency (EE) and delay. Different from existing works on physical layer, we aim to achieve a good tradeoff between EE and delay in wireless networks virtualization using cross-layer stochastic optimization approach. In particular, we formulate a cross-layer problem using fractional programming and Lyapunov optimization method. In wireless networks, retransmissions are used by senders to recover lost packets. The conventional retransmission schemes usually retransmit only one lost packet each time, resulting in a low retransmission efficiency. However, using broadcasting nature of a wireless channel with network coding (NC), we can recover more than one lost packet per transmission. Different from single-sender multiple-receiver wireless networks as considered in the existing works, this paper explores the ways to use NC for retransmissions in multiple-sender multiple-receiver scenarios. In addition, this paper also aims to investigate the advantages and shortcomings of using NC in retransmissions. In order to maximize the gain and minimize the impact in NC retransmissions, a probabilistic network coding retransmission (PNCR) scheme is proposed, where a buyer/seller game-theoretic approach is adopted to optimize the performance. Ultra-dense networks (UDNs) are one of the key enabling techniques for implementation of 5G wireless communication systems, and inter-cell interference is a major issue in UDNs. Coordinated Multipoint Joint Transmission (CoMP-JT) helps reduce inter-cell interferences. However, due to randomly and densely distributed access entities in UDNs, many challenging issues need to be dealt with to implement CoMP-JT in UDNs. In this article, we aim to address the issues on how to achieve maximal per area spectral efficiency in UDNs based on CoMP-JT technology. Mobile cloud computing (MCC) can significantly improve the processing/storage capacity and standby time of mobile terminals by migrating data processing and storage to the remote cloud. However, due to the wireless resource limitations of access points/base stations, data streaming of MCC suffers poor quality-of-service (QoS) in multiuser multiservice scenarios, such as long buffering time and intermittent disruptions. In this paper, we propose a backoff-based wireless resource scheduling (BWRS) scheme, in which real-time services have higher priority than non-real-time services. BWRS can improve the QoS of real-time streams and the overall performance of MCC networks. We formulate an M/M/1 queueing model and propose a queueing-delay-optimal control algorithm to minimize the average queueing delay of non-real-time services. Furthermore, a delay-constrained control algorithm is developed not only to minimize the queueing delay of non-real-time services of multiservice users but to support users' non-real-time services under delay constraints as well. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can minimize the average queueing delay while still meeting the delay requirement and can significantly improve blocking probability and channel utilization. Visible light communication (VLC) is a newly emerging technology, which integrates communications and lighting purposes, and has become a very active research topic in the areas of wireless communications. It is expected to become an important part of the next generation wireless communications because of its unique features in using unlicensed spectrum, support of high data rate, and its resistance to electromagnetic interferences. In this survey paper, we begin with a review on the basis of photometry, which is used to establish channel models of VLC systems. Then, we will continue to address various issues on the fundamental characteristic features of VLC systems, the impact of indoor environments on system performance, and the analysis and discussions of five different types of typical VLC channel models and other related parameters in VLC channel models. Finally, in terms of the future works, we will show the possible follow-up research focuses and directions as an effort to identify some new research topics on VLCs. Energy consumption is a major concern in today's wireless communications due to the consensus for a greener world. LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) has been standardized for the fourth-generation mobile communications to meet the growing demands for high-speed wireless communications. However, high-speed signal processing on LTE/LTE-A user equipment (UE) causes excessive power consumption. The discontinuous reception (DRX) mechanism is a critical technique for tackling this issue. Delay constraint and power savings are two contradictory performance metrics associated with the DRX mechanism. Using recursive deduction and Markov model, this paper provides an in-depth analysis on the average delay and average power consumption of the DRX mechanism. Two performance metrics, namely, power-saving factor and relative power saving, are devised to assess the power-saving performance of the DRX mechanism. The accuracy of theoretical analysis is validated by computer simulations using the parameters in compliance with LTE specifications. The performance of the DRX mechanism is governed by a set of parameters that interact with one another in an intricate manner. Therefore, the values of key parameters are tested to assess their impacts on the performance of the DRX mechanism. Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is an attractive technique because it can significantly enhance the throughput of a wireless network with a relatively simple implementation, as compared with conventional network coding (NC) schemes. In this paper, we first investigate PNC with frequency shift keying (FSK) through the derivation of its bit-error rate (BER) and capacity, as well as the impact of imperfect synchronization to the overall performance. Based on the discussions on PNC with 2FSK, we then further expand the analysis to PNC with $M$-ary FSK (MFSK). Theoretical results indicate that the BER performance of PNC with 2FSK is a bit worse than that of PNC with 2PSK. This article reviews an emerging wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) technique with an emphasis on its performance enhancement employing multi-antenna techniques. Compared to traditional wireless information transmission, WIPT faces numerous challenges. First, it is more susceptible to channel fading and path loss, resulting in a much shorter power transfer distance. Second, it gives rise to the issue of how to balance spectral efficiency for information transmission and energy efficiency for power transfer in order to obtain an optimal tradeoff. Third, there exists a security issue for information transmission in order to improve power transfer efficiency. In this context, multi-antenna techniques, e.g. energy beamforming, are introduced to solve these problems by exploiting spatial degree of freedom. This article provides a tutorial on various aspects of multi-antenna based WIPT techniques, with a focus on tackling the challenges by parameter optimization and protocol design. In particular, we investigate the WIPT tradeoffs based on two typical multi-antenna techniques: the limited feedback multi-antenna technique for short-distance transfer; and the large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO, also known as massive MIMO) technique for long-distance transfer. In this paper, we consider a multi-cell MISO downlink, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends messages to its intended user, while a passive eavesdropper tries to intercept the information in each cell. Physical layer security is employed in order to guarantee information security. Due to incomplete channel state information (CSI) at BSs, residue inter-cell interference exists even with coordinated beamforming, which exerts a great impact on the secrecy performance. In this paper, we conduct a unified performance analysis for physical layer security with incomplete CSI, and derives closed-form expressions of ergodic secrecy rate, secrecy outage probability, and interception probability, considering CSI estimation accuracy, transmit signal to noise ratio (SNR), and channel condition. We reveal some insights on the secrecy performance through asymptotic analysis. Furthermore, based on the derived theoretical results, we propose a CSI exchange amount allocation scheme. Cognitive radio technology can significantly improve spectrum utilization efficiency via enabling secondary users to access licensed spectrum dynamically without harmful interference to primary users. Most existing works on cognitive radio networks were focused on enhancing spectrum efficiency using spectrum sensing, spectrum sharing, and network deployment schemes. However, the energy efficiency issue was largely ignored. Thus, the dilemma between high energy consumption by fast-growing wireless communications and fewer global energy resources has motivated research on energy-efficient cognitive radio networks for enhancing spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency simultaneously. In this article, we overview energyefficient non-cooperative cognitive radio networks from the micro, meso, and macro perspectives, where the micro view means how to design energy-efficient spectrum sensing algorithms for each individual secondary user, the meso view means how to coordinate non-cooperative secondary users to share spectrum efficiently, and the macro view means how to deploy cognitive radio networks in an energy-efficient approach. New emerging services, such as real-time video streaming or video on demand, are causing rapid growth in packet transmission over wireless networks. Unlike voice calls, for which the duration is usually not very long, video streaming applications require continuous transmission for a long time. Therefore, video streaming applications in mobile networks consume more energy compared with voice calls. Thus, the task of optimizing data transmission algorithms has become more important during the last few years. Apparently, the majority of multimedia traffic is video transmission. These applications consume much more power, compared with audio or general data transmission, because of higher throughput requirements. This paper addresses the problem of decreasing power consumption due to video transmission applications in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. There are existing solutions for managing power consumption during video transmission. In particular, Third-Generation Partnership Project LTE Advanced (LTE-A) has defined the discontinuous reception/transmission (DRX/DRT) mechanism to allow devices to turn off their radio interfaces and go to sleep in various patterns. Some other similar solutions suggest DRX/DRT optimization to maximize the sleep periods of devices while guaranteeing quality of service in multimedia applications. However, existing solutions for packet transmission optimization are not very effective without physical-layer optimization. We suggest a new method of modulation for improving energy efficiency of wireless video transmission. Four different schemes of quasi-quadrature modulation using multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) techniques with different quality of service performances are proposed in this paper. The performance analysis of a distributed access wireless network, in which nodes are randomly distributed [namely, a random wireless network (RWN)] over a large area, is challenging. An effective mathematical modeling of these networks can help network designers to predict whether a given set of quality-of-service (QoS) requirements can be satisfied prior to the real network deployment. Previous models for the performance analysis of multihop RWNs fail to give accurate results due to the assumption of a single-hop, limited, and a priori known number of stations; negligence of the hidden terminals; and the use of a Boolean logic collision model. In this paper, we develop an alternative probabilistic modeling approach to analyze the performance of these networks in medium-access-control (MAC) and network layers. In this paper, we propose a denoise-and-forward network coding (DNF-NC) transmission scheme for its applications in two-way relay multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We first consider a scenario with a single pair of source nodes, and minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver is applied at each node. The global optimal precoding design based on the mean square error (MSE) criterion can be achieved by solving two independent convex optimization problems. To achieve a better tradeoff between performance and complexity, an alternative power optimization approach is proposed using a channel diagonalization technique. Then, we proceed to considering a more challenging bidirectional communication scenario with multiple pairs of source nodes. With intrapair coordination at the sources, we modify DNF-NC by employing a signal alignment technique to combat interpair interference. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed DNF-NC schemes can significantly improve bit error rate (BER) performance in both two scenarios, and such performance gains can be achieved with relatively low computational complexity. Device-to-device (D2D) communications help improve the performance of wireless multicast services in cellular networks via cooperative retransmissions among multicast recipients within a cluster. Resource utilization efficiency should be taken into account in the design of D2D communication systems. To maximize resource efficiency of D2D retransmissions, there is a tradeoff between multichannel diversity and multicast gain. In this paper, by analyzing the relationship between the number of relays and minimal time-frequency resource cost on retransmissions, we derive a closed-form probability density function (pdf) for an optimal number of D2D relays. Motivated by the analysis, we then propose an intracluster D2D retransmission scheme with optimized resource utilization, which can adaptively select the number of cooperative relays performing multicast retransmissions and give an iterative subcluster partition algorithm to enhance retransmission throughput. Exploiting both multichannel diversity and multicast gain, the proposed scheme achieves a significant gain in terms of resource utilization if compared with its counterparts with a fixed number of relays. Self-organizing network, or SON, technology, which is able to minimize human intervention in networking processes, was proposed to reduce the operational costs for service providers in future wireless systems. As a cost-effective means to significantly enhance capacity, heterogeneous deployment has been defined in the 3GPP LTEAdvanced standard, where performance gains can be achieved through increasing node density with low-power nodes, such as pico, femto, and relay nodes. The SON has great potential for application in future LTE-Advanced heterogeneous networks, also called HetNets. In this article, state-of-the-art research on self-configuring and self-optimizing HetNets are surveyed, and their corresponding SON architectures are introduced. In particular, we discuss the issues of automatic physical cell identifier assignment and radio resource configuration in HetNets based on selfconfiguring SONs. As for self-optimizing SONs, we address the issues of optimization strategies and algorithms for mobility management and energy saving in HetNets. In this paper, we consider a secrecy relaying communication scenario where all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. An eavesdropper has the access to the global channel state information (CSI), and all the other nodes only know the CSI not associated with the eavesdropper. A new secrecy transmission protocol is proposed, where the concept of interference alignment is combined with cooperative jamming to ensure that artificial noise from transmitters can be aligned at the destination, but not at the eavesdropper due to the randomness of wireless channels. Analytical results, such as ergodic secrecy rate and outage probability, are developed, from which more insightful understanding of the proposed protocol, such as multiplexing and diversity gains, can be obtained. A few special cases, where outage probability cannot be decreased to zero regardless of SNR, are also discussed. SUMMARY A new video transport protocol for multicast agents in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is proposed in this paper. The proposed protocol enables a significant reduction in the transmission overhead, while providing reliable communication for its use in multicast applications. This proposed reliable protocol provides a practical approach for an overlay peer-to-peer multicast facility supported within the application layer. This obviates the need to give upgraded routers capable of handling multicast broadcasting or modify the existing protocol stack. The protocol tolerates partial losses in multimedia transmissions, while supporting control of the delay sensitivity of such transmissions in WMNs. The key issue in this protocol is the ability to detect packet loss, anticipate retransmission requests, and use the anticipated retransmission requests to transmit the lost packets prior to requests from other receiving agents. The proposed protocol allows for the receiver to determine if retransmission of lost packets is required, ensuring the greatest flexibility needed for a reliable multicast protocol. Code-hopping multiple access (CHMA) is a newly emerging multiple-access technique with the potential to offer high capacity. Unfortunately, orthogonality among user signals in existing CHMA schemes can be preserved only in synchronous channels under an assumption that neither multipath interference (MI) nor multiple-access interference (MAI) exists. Exploiting their ideal orthogonality, we apply orthogonal complementary codes to CHMA systems to overcome problems with existing CHMA schemes. In particular, we will show that the application of orthogonal complementary codes can significantly improve the performance of a CHMA system due to its unique collision-resistant capability. To deal with destructive collisions among spreading codes in CHMA systems, convolutional coding is employed in complementary-coded CHMA systems. The properties and bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed system are analyzed for both uplink and downlink applications, where the system may simultaneously suffer MI and MAI. Simulation results show that the complementary-coded CHMA with channel coding can provide much higher capacity than complementary-coded code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems in varying operational scenarios. Spatial diversity in wireless networks can be attained by exploiting the broadcast nature of wireless transmission without the need of multiple antennas in individual device, leading to the implementation of cooperative communication. While most prior works focused on the single source-destination scenario, it should be more realistic to consider how to induce cooperation among multiple source-destination pairs assisted by multiple relays. In such a case, multiple access interference (MAI) may present due to asynchronous transmissions of the users and relays. In this paper, a cooperative network architecture based on orthogonal complementary (OC) codes inherently immune to MAI is proposed. To efficiently utilize the scarce radio spectrum and codes, a centralized medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed to coordinate the code assignment and channel access among users and relays. We theoretically analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed OC coded cooperative network over multipath Rayleigh fading channel. The performance gain resulted from different numbers of relays is investigated, and compared with a time division multiple access (TDMA) based cooperative scheme. We show that the proposed OC coded cooperative network performs well in the presence of timing offset, and thus is well suited for asynchronous uplink transmission with cooperative relaying. Wireless communications play an important role in improving transportation environment safety and providing Internet access for vehicles. This paper proposes a QoS-aware two-level uplink dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm for IEEE 802.16j-based vehicular networks. IEEE 802.16j is an extension of standard IEEE 802.16 to support relay mode operation where traffics from/to subscriber stations (SS) are relayed to/from a base station (BS) via a relay station (RS). In such a vehicular network, the IEEE 802.16j BSs are installed along a highway, RSs are installed in large vehicles such as coaches, and the 802.16j interface is equipped on SSs such as individual passengers' mobile devices within a moving coach. In the proposed DBA algorithm, a utility function, which considers characteristics of different types of services, is designed. The objective of the proposed two-level DBA algorithm is to allocate bandwidth to different types of services from BS to RSs and then from a RS to SSs with given quality of service (QoS) requirements. It aims at maximizing the utility of the overall network and minimizing the average queuing delay of the overall network. The successful application of pervasive services running in mobile wireless networks and devices relies on its ability to provide efficient and cost-effective QoS (Quality of Service) support. This paper proposes a comprehensive QoS model specifically for pervasive services. It considers not only user-perceived factors but also mobile wireless network characteristics. The corresponding formula to calculate each QoS criterion is also devised. In particular, this paper formulates the QoS-aware service selection problem for pervasive service composition and proposes some solutions to the problem, i.e., global-search-based LOSSA (local optimal service selection algorithm) and limited broadcast based LOSSA- k. Orthogonal user pairing (OUP) was proposed for virtual multiple-input multiple-output (V-MIMO) in uplink 3G LTE system. However, its complexity is too high for practical implementation, especially when user population is large. To improve on this, semi-orthogonal user pairing (SUP) was suggested as an alternative. In this paper, two novel SUP algorithms, namely correlative angle-based SUP (CA-SUP) and Frobenius norm-based SUP (FN-SUP) algorithms are proposed. In view of the fact that ideal power control is difficult to implement, fixed power allocation (FPA) and adaptive power allocation (APA) constraints for the user pairing algorithms are introduced. Ergodic capacities for CA-SUP and FN-SUP algorithms with APA and FPA constraints, in terms of the numbers of users and antennas at Node-B, are evaluated and their capacity upper bounds are derived. Analysis and simulation results show that FN-SUP and CA-SUP algorithms requiring only limited channel state information (CSI) perform well and suit in particular for virtual V-MIMO systems. As an indispensable part of intelligent transportation system (ITS), inter-vehicle communication (IVC) emerges as an important research topic. The inter-vehicle communication works based on vehicular ad hoc networking (VANET), and provides communications among different vehicles. The wide applications of VANET helps to improve driving safety with the help of traffic information updates. To ensure that messages can be delivered effectively, the security in VANET becomes a critical issue. Conventional security systems rely heavily on centralized infrastructure to perform security operations such as key assignment and management, which may not suit well for VANET due to its high mobility and ad hoc links. Some works suggested that vehicles should be connected to fixed devices such as road side units (RSUs), but this requires deployment of a large number of costly RSUs in a specific area. This paper is focused on the issues on decentralized IVC without fixed infrastructure and proposes a method for Dynamic Establishment of Secure Communications in VANET (DESCV), which works in particular well for VANET communication key management when centralistic infrastructure or RSU is not available. We will demonstrate through synergy analysis and simulations that DESCV performs well in providing secure communications among vehicles traveling at a relative velocity as high as 240 km/h. In this paper, a cross-layer analytical framework is proposed to analyze the throughput and packet delay of a two-hop wireless link in wireless mesh network (WMN). It considers the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) process in physical layer and the traffic queuing process in upper layers, taking into account the traffic distribution changes at the output node of each link due to the AMC process therein. Firstly, we model the wireless fading channel and the corresponding AMC process as a finite state Markov chain (FSMC) serving system. Then, a method is proposed to calculate the steady-state output traffic of each node. Based on this, we derive a modified queuing FSMC model for the relay to gateway link, which consists of a relayed non-Poisson traffic and an originated Poisson traffic, thus to evaluate the throughput at the mesh gateway. This analytical framework is verified by numerical simulations, and is easy to extend to multi-hop links. Furthermore, based on the above proposed cross-layer framework, we consider the problem of optimal power and bandwidth allocation for QoS-guaranteed services in a two-hop wireless link, where the total power and bandwidth resources are both sum-constrained. Secondly, the practical optimal power allocation algorithm and optimal bandwidth allocation algorithm are presented separately. Then, the problem of joint power and bandwidth allocation is analyzed and an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the problem in a simple way. In order to support the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for real-time traffic over broadband wireless networks, advanced techniques such as space-time diversity (STD) and multicarrier direct-sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) are implemented at the physical layer. However, the employment of such techniques evidently affects the QoS provisioning algorithms at the medium access control (MAC) layer. In this paper, we propose a space-time infrastructure and develop a set of cross-layer real-time QoS-provisioning algorithms for admission control, scheduling, and subchannel-allocations. We analytically map the parameters characterizing the STD onto the admission-control region guaranteeing the real-time QoS. Our analytical analyses show that the proposed algorithms can effectively support real-time QoS provisioning. Also presented are numerical solutions and simulation results showing that the STD can significantly improve the QoS provisioning for real-time services over wireless networks. The concept of software defined wireless networks (SDWN) has been rapidly evolving as the solution to meet the demand for dynamic wireless services in ubiquitous computing. In SDWN, the control plane and data plane are decoupled, network intelligence is logically centralized, and the underlying network infrastructure is abstracted from the applications. Thus it highly simplifies network administration and management, which facilitates the dynamic nature of future network functions and intelligent applications while lowering operating costs through simplified hardware, software, and management. In Part 1, which was published in November 2015, we provided an overview of the latest major developments and progress in SDWN architecture. The growing popularity of smart phones, tablet computers and mobile cloud services places an increasing demand for dynamic services from wireless networks. This demand creates new requirements for the network architecture, such as flexibility in management and configuration, adaptability and vendor-independence. To meet these requirements, software defined wireless network (SDWN) has been proposed as a cost-effective solution. SDWN decouples the data plane from the control plane, enabling direct programmability of network controls and an abstraction of the underlying infrastructure for wireless applications. Cooperative network coding has been proposed as an effective solution to improve system performance. Through collaborative network coding in the intermediate node(s) instead of direct forwarding, the transmission reliability, efficiency, and security can be enhanced significantly. Although extensive research activity on the cooperative network coding has been reported in the literature, most works focused only on their technical analyses, and no effort has been made so far on its applications in IMT-Advanced systems. In this article, we take a first look at possible application scenarios in order to design the needed protocols for cooperative network coding in futuristic wireless communication systems. The architectures of cooperative network coding schemes are presented in this article for their possible applications in two-way, multiple access, and multicast cooperative relays. The key techniques for implementing these three network coded cooperative relay schemes are identified, and their performances are evaluated. At the end of this article, the major challenges in terms of technical standardization that may affect the application of cooperative network coding in the IMT-Advanced systems are discussed as well.
