This paper deals with the results of a study of the thermodestruction of the earlywood and latewood in the 1988-1998 growth rings of Gmelin larch ( Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) trees growing along the polar tree line (7052′53″N, 102°58′26″E, Taimyr Peninsula). The study used methods of thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric data obtained were analyzed by Ozawa-Flynn-Wall kinetic model. We determined macrokinetic parameters of thermodestruction. Earlywood and latewood showed no significant difference in cellulose/hemicellulose/lignin ratio, whereas they differed significantly in destruction average value of activation energy (197.55 and 55.90 kJ mol, respectively). Our analysis of the correlation of thermodestruction values with mean monthly air temperature and precipitation revealed that component composition of both earlywood and latewood was influenced more by the weather conditions at the beginning of the growing season (April-June). Air temperature had markable influence on the wood component composition during cell wall synthesis only in latewood, whereas precipitation influenced the composition in both latewood and earlywood. TG/DTG and DSC methods were found to be promising for developing information on biochemical composition of early and latewood tracheids in stems and for identifying the extent of the influence of climatic changes on cell wall synthesis. This article deals with the characterization of biomass pellets using Differential Scanning Calorimetry. We used three types of industrially produced and commercially available pellets as samples: wood pellets containing grass, wood pellet containing bark and wood pellets without bark. Each of the samples were examined using the DSC method. Based on the measurements in atmosphere of air and nitrogen temperature, the changes caused by thermal degradation of various kinds of test fuels were observed. In this study, silica sol (SiO sol) and KCO were used as flame retardants for wood. The synergistic effect of SiO sol and KCO on the flame retardancy, leaching resistance, and thermal properties of wood was investigated. The limiting oxygen index results revealed a significant improvement in the flame retardancy and leaching resistance of the wood sample treated with KCO and SiO sol using the double bath technique. The thermal analysis results showed that the synergistic effect of KCO and the SiO sol effectively prolonged the degradation of the wood sample during the charring stage and improved the stability of the char residue. The thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry analysis and scanning electron microscopy results showed that KCO catalyzed the degradation reaction of the wood sample at lower temperatures resulting in an increase in the water and carbon dioxide output, and the SiO sol formed a compact and melted barrier on the surface of the char residue, which hindered the transfer of heat and combustible gases in the condensed phase. High-temperature heat treatment (HTHT) is an effective method for improving the wood dimensional stability and biological durability at present. However, the quantitative control of the wood color during the HTHT has been a more difficult problem for a long time. To solve the problem of quantitative control of wood color under the thermo-vacuum treatment (TVT) process, the mathematical model of heat and moisture transfer in alder birch wood (Betula alnoides) during the TVT process was built, and its application in the quantitative control of the wood color was also studied. (1) The experimental values and the model values of heat and moisture transfer in wood were found to be in good agreement. (2) The changes of wood temperature and moisture content (MC) were influenced obviously by the heat treatment temperature, the initial MC, and the thickness of specimen as well. The higher the heat treatment temperature was, the more rapid was the rise in the wood temperature and the drop in MC. The higher the initial MC of the wood was and the thicker the wood got, the slower the rise in wood temperature and the drop in MC. (3) Based on the mathematical model of heat and moisture transfer during the TVT process and the wood color index difference regression equations in the function of the temperature and time, the quantitative control of alder birch wood color during the TVT process was achieved. Many studies have utilized a small-scale experimental apparatus such as the cone calorimeter to investigate the piloted ignition of wood exposed to constant levels of incident heat flux; however, there is a deficiency of similar studies related to the non-piloted ignition of wood exposed to time-varying heat fluxes which might represent more realistic fire exposures. In this study, a method was established for producing well-controlled, time-varying exposures using the conical radiant heater of a cone calorimeter. Experiments were conducted in which the incident flux, time to non-piloted ignition, and back-surface temperature of spruce wood were measured. Measured data were used in combination with a numerical heat transfer model to compute the time-dependent temperature distribution through each specimen, and thereby deduce the surface temperature at ignition. From the 30 specimens tested, the average surface temperature for non-piloted ignition of wood was determined to be 521±10 °C. From this surface temperature range, the heat transfer model was used to predict the range of time over which non-piloted ignition was likely to occur for a given time-varying exposure. This procedure was found to produce excellent predictions of ignition time for the time-varying exposures considered in this study. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of varying temperature on the strength characteristics of joints bonded using three types of one-component PVAc adhesives (i.e., Rakoll Express D3, Titebond II Premium, and Rhenocoll 3W, 4B Plus) that belong to the group of thermoplastic wood adhesives intended for non-construction bonding applications. The measuring procedure was a transverse tensile test for estimation of joint strength. As documented by the test results, a higher joint strength achieved at a higher temperature was achieved again after a gradual increase in the joint temperature from 20 °C to 140 °C and subsequent cooling to the starting temperature. After cooling the joint to the starting temperature, all tested adhesives complied with the minimum strength, namely 10 MPa. Le traitement thermique superficiel du bois permet de rehausser ses propriétés hydrophobe, antifongique et anti-gonflement contribuant à le mettre à l'abri des aléas naturels. Nous avons étudié la pertinence d'un traitement solvothermique d'éprouvettes de bois d'épinette noire imprégnées de liquides ioniques hydrophile ([EMIM][OTf]) et hydrophobe ([HMIM][TF2N]) comparativement à un traitement thermique simple sous balayage à l'azote. Les éprouvettes ont été soumises à des tests d'adsorption d'humidité, d'absorption d'eau, de gonflement, et de propriétés mécaniques après des traitements réalisés dans les gammes de température et de temps suivantes: [180 °C-260 °C] et [30 min-4 h]. Les tests ont montré une diminution notable de la teneur ultime en humidité et de prise d'eau liquide lorsque les échantillons de bois sont préalablement imprégnés de liquide ionique hydrophobe et que la température de traitement reste inférieure à 200 °C. Cependant, les tests de propriétés mécaniques ont montré que les modules d'élasticité et de rupture des éprouvettes affichaient une tendance à la baisse avec l'augmentation de la température et du temps de traitement. L'imprégnation de liquide ionique ne changeait rien à ce comportement même si en général une fragilisation accrue des éprouvettes pouvait être notée à cause de la solubilisation partielle des principaux composants de bois. Surface heat treatment of wood improves its hydrophobic, antifungal, and anti-swelling properties, and strengthens its resistance to the vagaries of natural exposure. We investigated the relevance of a superficial solvothermal treatment of wood specimens impregnated with hydrophilic ([EMIM][OTf]) and hydrophobic ([EMIM][OTf]) ionic liquids which we compared to a conventional heat treatment under nitrogen atmosphere over the following treatment temperature and time ranges: [180 °C - 260 °C] and [30 min - 4 h]. The treated specimens were subjected to moisture adsorption, water absorption, swelling, and mechanical properties testing. The results revealed a notable decrease in ultimate moisture content and water uptake of the samples, provided they were impregnated with a hydrophobic ionic liquid before heat treatment at temperatures less than 200 °C. However, the mechanical properties testing showed that the elastic and rupture moduli of specimens decreased with increasing treatment temperature and time irrespective of using ionic liquids. ABSTRACT Many wooden objects from cultural heritage consist in wooden panels, painted on one face. Some of these panels show permanent cupping, micro-cracks of the painted layer, and cracks of the painted support itself. Different physical and mechanical phenomena are at the origin of these damages: wood is a hygroscopic material (its dimensions vary with humidity), it is highly anisotropic, the paint layer on one face has properties of permeability different from those of raw wood of the back face, and a rigid frame possibly restrained the deformation of the panel. Experimentations on our mock-up panels combined with numerical simulations of these panels in real situations of hygrothermal fluctuations will allow us to test specific situations and eventually to make suggestions to conservators and restorers and guide them in their interventions. Hygrothermal treatments are often used to improve wood durability thanks a reduction of its hygroscopicity. They have been considered as means to reproduce the physical properties of ancient wood. We intend to model the mechanisms involved in mechanical and chemical effects of wooden painted panels exposed to climatic variations. To develop such conservation tool, we need to work on mock-up, which replicate panel painting. So we will investigate the process of hygroscopic ageing and compression set generation of the back of painted panels to explain their permanent cupping and replicate their ageing state. The thermal expansion behavior of dry solid wood was investigated by dynamic dilatometry and thermal mechanical analysis. Anomalous thermal expansion behavior was observed concerning the displacement change under a constant compression pressure, which was not previously reported. Wood submitted to temperatures below 0°C under dry conditions exhibited a large increment in the linear thermal expansion coefficient (CLTE) and a sudden drop in the CLTE around 50°C as well as above 130°C during heating. In subsequent cooling/heating processes, these anomalous behaviors remained at temperatures below 100°C, although less pronounced, and disappeared at temperatures above 100°C. These behaviors were clearly perceptible in the radial and tangential directions but not in the longitudinal direction. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated for their potential as reagents for enhancing the fire resistance of wood. The following ILs were in focus: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C2mim][PF6]). Supposedly, these ILs do not dissolve or degrade wood components to a large extent. No morphologic changes were observed in any ILtreated wood samples, but they showed an enhanced fire resistance compared with that of untreated wood. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated that the ILs are penetrated into the cell walls. The wood treated with [C2mim][PF6] exhibited the highest fire resistance based on thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyzer studies: it was more resistant against flaming at approximately 350°C and the subsequent glowing at higher temperatures. This enhanced fire resistance was interpreted by dehydration in the presence of the ILs under observation. In general, ILs are promising reagents for improving the thermal properties of wood. The influence of thermal treatment on moisture exchange between wood and natural environment with variable air parameters as well as on dimensional stability of wood samples was investigated. The experiments were carried out with oak wood samples indoors and outside. The thickness of samples was 30 mm, width was 30 mm and length was 20 mm; conventional density varied from 500 kg/m³ to 580 kg/m³. Initially, the wood was air-dried down to 7%-9% of moisture content. In order to decrease possibility of the both moisture absorption and evaporation during wood application thermal treatment must be applied. Due to that the samples were heated at temperature of 60, 80, 100 and 120 °C for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The moisture content of wood and its variations after thermal treatment depends on the both heating temperature and duration. The higher temperature and the longer heating duration, the lower wood hygroscopicity can be achieved. The effect of thermal treatment on the moisture content and its changes were observed for wood samples stored indoor and outside. In dependence of thermal treatment conditions moisture content in wood samples independently on storing conditions (indoor or outside) can decrease down to 30 % compare to the untreated ones. The change of moisture content during various seasons after 24 hours of storing indoor decreases down to 60 %, while outside that is only 39 %. Dimensional stability of wood samples also depends on the both thermal treatment temperature and duration. The higher treatment temperature and the longer duration, the higher dimensional stability can be obtained. The heat treatment of oak wood samples at selected regimes allows to decrease values of shrinkage and swelling coefficients down to 40 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of wood components and cellulose crystallinity on the kinetic degradation of different wood species has been investigated using thermogravimetry. Four wood species were studied: Pinus elliottii (PIE), Eucalyptus grandis (EUG), Mezilaurus itauba (ITA) and Dipteryx odorata (DIP). Thermogravimetric results showed that higher extractive contents in the wood accelerate the degradation process and promote an increase in the conversion values at low temperatures. Alternatively, the results indicated that the cellulose crystallinity inhibits wood degradation; organized cellulose regions slow the degradation process because the well-packed cellulose chains impede heat diffusion, which improves the wood’s thermal stability. The wood degradation mechanism occurs by diffusion processes when the conversion values are below 0.4. When the conversion values are above 0.5, the degradation is a result of random nucleation with one nucleus in each particle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The time-dependent mechanical behaviour (TDMB) of wood is important when using the material for structural purposes. Recently, a new method for predicting the TDMB by numerical modelling was established based on the assumption that TDMB is caused by the sliding of the microfibrils past each other. In this study, the TDMB is examined via creep experiments on small specimens of Norway spruce latewood. The results of these are compared with results from numerical modelling. The experiments include results at two levels of moisture content and three levels of temperature, enabling an investigation of these two climatic factors on TDMB of wood. It was found that the mechanical response of wood tissue is the sum of responses from both tracheids and middle lamella, with only the previous being reversible. The effect of moisture and temperature differed in that the latter affected the elastic and time-dependent responses equally. Moisture, on the other hand, reduced both the elastic properties and the activation energy barrier for sliding of the microfibrils, but furthermore changed the microfibril angle of the sample as a result of swelling. Hereby, moisture had a larger effect on the time-dependent response than the elastic. All of these effects were predicted by numerical modelling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The moisture content of wood is known to have a significant influence on the wood's mechanical properties. Using wood as an energy absorber in impact limiters of packages for the transport of radioactive material, it is of particular importance to ensure the moisture content and thus relevant mechanical properties to be in specified limits. The paper surveys the influence of wood moisture content on the mechanical properties of wood. Different measuring methods are discussed with respect to in situ applicability, accuracy and effort. The results of an experimental analysis of the accuracy of hand held moisture metres using the electrical resistance method are discussed. Conclusions are drawn regarding the measurement of moisture content of wood upon delivery as well as of complete impact limiter assemblies. Requirements for quality surveillance during manufacturing of wood filled impact limiters are derived and it is exemplified how to meet them. In this paper, anisotropic wood is thermally characterized using the transient hot-bridge method recently developed at PTB Germany. The main element of this method is the THB sensor which is composed of four tandem strips forming a Wheatstone bridge and which has the specificity of measuring in the same experiment both thermal conductivity and thermal diffusitnty. The adoption of special configurations allows us to characterize anisotropic materials. In this context, the axial, radial, and tangential thermal conductivities as well as the thermal diffusivities of three wood species are measured and analyzed for different moisture contents. Due to the difficulty of measuring thermal diffusivity using the conventional electrothermal methods, particular care will be given to this task. The second part of a comprehensive review of the literature on wood published in the Journal of Materials Science since its inception in 1966 is presented. The topics reviewed include wood modification and surface treatment, the thermal stability of wood and resistance to fire, the physical properties of wood chars and wood-based carbon materials, and the structure-related properties of wood-cement and wood-polymer composites. The articles reflect the wide range of techniques utilised to improve wood properties, the role of wood as a precursor for carbon-based materials and cellular ceramics and the application of wood as a composite reinforcement. The ignition of various wood species by exposure to the radiation of a DKsR-10000 xenon lamp was investigated. Time dependences of ignition delay on the radiant energy intensity were obtained for various wood species: cedar, larch, pine, birch, and aspen. The effect of the initial temperature and moisture content of wood on the ignition time was studied. The ignition temperature of pine and birch wood for various radiant energy intensities was determined by an optical method. It is shown that the ignition time of pine wood decreased by a factor of 1.5-2 as the initial temperature of samples was increased by 100 degrees. It was found that the ignition temperature of wood increased with increasing radiant flux density and depended on the wood species. Increasing the wood moisture content by a factor of 10 increased its ignition time by more than 50%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variations of relative humidity and temperature result in moisture and temperature gradients in wood, which induce stress perpendicular to grain and may even cause cracking of the wood. To address the problem, a sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3D) finite element procedure was developed for investigation of hygrothermal stress in glulam beams, in which moisture and heat transfer were taken into consideration, and the hygrothermal deformation, creep, and mechanosorption were also included. The moisture content, temperature, and stress distributions in glulam beams were modelled successfully. The study provides insight into the mechanism of hygrothermal stress in glulam and also provides useful reference to the design of glulam structures and the design of lamina stacking sequence in production of glulam. Thermal treatments of wood ( Fagus sylvatica and Fraxinus excelsior) were examined. The temperature load on wood causes characteristic changes in the chemical composition, which were determined by means of several defined methods. The results confirm that in addition to the degradation of polyoses lignin, known as the thermally most stable compound, also shows significant thermal alterations. In addition, mechanical properties of the specimens were examined in order to correlate these results with the effects of chemical changes of thermally treated wood. The impact of temperature on the linear viscoelastic region, which is characterized by critical strain, of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) was investigated at various temperatures between –100 and 220 °C for specimens with a moisture content of approximately 0.6%. The effect of oscillation frequency on the linear viscoelastic region under various constant temperatures was also examined. The results indicated that critical strain generally decreased with increasing temperature except at –80, –20, 40, 120, and 220 °C. These five exceptions were attributed to the occurrence of relaxation processes. With an increase in testing frequency from 1 to 20 Hz, the critical strain decreased slightly at all temperatures. It is suggested that the stored elastic energy and yield stress, which were obtained at critical strain, could be indicators to predict wood mechanical performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal treatment is one of environmental friendly wood modification processes, developed in order to improve wood’s natural durability and dimensional stability. Beside wood species, mainly isothermal temperature of heat-treatment and process duration affect these properties, which also correlate with the mass losses caused by the treatment. However, there is a lack of suitable external quality control methods. In this work thermogravimetry as a potential method for determining the degree of thermal modification is presented. Several calibration curves, representing the mass losses in a certain temperature range (the values obtained from the TG curves) compared to weight losses caused by previous heat-treatment (known values), were established for spruce wood samples modified at different isothermal temperatures (from 170 to 220 °C). Linear plot and good correlation factors ( R2 = 0.95 and 0.96) were obtained for the TG mass losses from 130 to 280 °C and from 130 to 300 °C, both under nitrogen atmosphere. The predominant cause of mass loss in this temperature region was depolymerisation and thermal decomposition of hemicelluloses residues. The heat treatment of wood is an environment-friendly method for wood preservation. The heat treatment process only uses steam and heat, and no chemicals or agents are applied to the material during the process. Tests have shown no harmful emissions are apparent when working with the material. This process improves wood's resistance to decay and its dimensional stability. In this study, the density, compression strength and hardness of heat treated hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) wood were investigated. Wood specimens that had been conditioned at 65% relative humidity and 20 °C were subjected to heat treatment at 170, 190, and 210 °C for 4, 8, and 12 hrs. After heat treatment, compression strength and hardness were determined according to TS 2595 and TS 2479. The results showed that the decreases of compression strength and hardness were related to the extent of density loss. Both compression strength and hardness decreased with the increasing temperatures and durations of the heat treatment. While the maximum density loss observed was 16.12% at 210 °C and 12 hour, at these heat-treatment conditions, the compression strength approximately decreased 30% and hardness values in tangential, radial, and longitudinal directions approximately decreased by 55%, 54%, and 38%, respectively. Modeling and experimental work on the auto-ignition of wood exposed to variable heat fluxes are presented. A one-dimensional model that describes the pyrolysis of wood subject to a linearly increasing heat flux was developed. Experiments were conducted for three species of wood subject to three levels of heat flux increasing rate. Reasonable comparative results are shown for in-depth temperature distribution. The article investigates the effect of the digester kappa number on the bleachability of softwood extended modified continuous cooking kraft pulp. In laboratory bleaching, the physical properties of the bleached pulp models were predicted based on the digester kappa number and the CIO2; charges in the D stages. The most cost-effective targets below 88 percent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is required for the final brightness. However, for a targeted brightness of 90 percent ISO, kappa 21 acts the highest degree for cost-effective delignification.
