Treatments of organic objects to extract ferrous compounds from waterlogged archaeological wood are well documented. For several years, numerous laboratories have been seeking to determine suitable conservation treatments for such organic objects. For chemical treatments, complexing agents such as EDTA and DTPA, along with acids such as citric and oxalic acids, were selected. In addition, oxidants and reducing agents were tested as pre-treatments to improve extraction rates. In fact, chemicals produce a selective reaction on ferrous compounds, which may improve or be inhibited by complexation or dissolution reactions. Their action depends on the type of compound to be extracted and those present inside the wood. The objective of this study was to make a comparative assessment of the various chemical conservation treatments identified and complement the evaluation of their extraction efficiency with a study of their impact on organic matter by adding criteria such as their visual aspect (using a spectrocolorimeter) and physicochemical actions by means of infrared spectroscopy and micromorphological observations. The effectiveness of EDTA was confirmed, as was that of citric acid, despite some questions arising concerning the presence of wood fibers in the treatment solution, even after rinsing. On the other hand, the extraction rate of oxalic acid, which has a very acidic pH, was unsurprisingly lower, but its visual and anatomical results raised the possibility of using it over a short period of time in view of the effectiveness observed on the wood surface. Pre-treatments improved extraction rates, except in the case of EDTA, which independently had a high extraction rate. It was observed that pre-treatments did not appear to cause any significant chemical degradation of the organic matter. This study provides a tool to assist conservators in selecting a chemical treatment that is in line with the state of decay of the wood, the characteristics of the ferrous compounds to be extracted, and the conservation objectives. The relationship between the mechanical properties of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese fir) wood and the development of fungal decay was investigated with the aim of implementing a statistical model useful as a non-destructive and a fast method for determining the state of conservation of in-service timber structures. Artificial decay due to brown rot fungi was induced on wood specimens and physical and mechanical test were performed periodically, as well as anatomical observation of wood, FT-IR spectroscopic and XRD diffraction analysis. As a result, Chinese fir was confirmed to have a good durability against fungi, showing a mass loss percentage of 7.21% on average after 14 weeks of exposure. On the contrary, the mechanical properties reduced dramatically during the decay test: a 19% decrease was observed for compression strength and 21% for tensile strength. Abstract The wooden foundations of Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge), the oldest and most famous of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, were analysed in order to determine the tree species used to construct the foundation, to examine the timber's present-day physical and mechanical properties and to identify construction periods. The material recovered during geotechnical surveys underwent micro-morphological, physical, chemical and mechanical analyses. The radiocarbon method was used for dating purposes. The footings of the bridge's foundations, mostly consisting of alder wood, were shown to be in good overall condition generally. A comparison of normal and polarised light images of wooden cross-sections showed abundant crystalline cellulose within the cell walls, indicating that the state of conservation of the waterlogged samples is very close to that of sound alder wood. Only one alder sample showed signs of severe bacterial attack, mostly concentrated in the fibre cell walls. Radiocarbon dating identified two distinct construction periods. One sample dates to 1570 AD ± 85, whilst another dates to the year 960 AD ± 59. The later dating corresponds to the construction of the stone bridge that still exists today. The earlier period, around the year 1000, likely refers to the foundations of the first bridge, built after several pontoon bridges, and corresponding to the initial Ponte della Moneta. The analyses to determine the state of preservation of waterlogged archaeological wood follow three different directions: anatomical analyses, physical evaluation and chemical characterisation. Physical parameters (densities and moisture content) are the ones most frequently found in the specialised literature. The measurement of moisture content is normally referred as maximum water content (MWC) in the case of archaeological wood in waterlogged conditions, because wood has been long-time preserved by the lack of oxygen in waterlogged conditions. Aim of the paper is the comparison of three pre-measurement treatments in the calculations of MWC: without any vacuum-pressure treatment, after 300 mbar vacuum pressure and after 50 mbar impregnation in water. The evaluations were performed on 240 samples of waterlogged archaeological wood coming from different excavation sites and including different wood species (both hardwoods and softwoods) in different state of preservation, from low to very high decay. The three tested methodologies to measure the maximum water content on waterlogged archaeological wood provided substantially equivalent results. Nevertheless, a deeper analysis of the results showed that the MWC values of 300 mbar impregnations were rather low compared to MWC standard measurements. Thus, this impregnation was a little bit harsher, causing most probably an anatomical damage on a portion of most degraded samples. The opposite result was obtained after the 50 mbar impregnation procedure. In this case, the MWC values were slightly higher. This means that this treatment seemed to be more effective in subtracting even the smallest air bubbles trapped inside waterlogged archaeological wood samples. Timber structures can be degraded during their life both by structural problems and by biological degradation factors like fungi and insects. The occurrence of those biodegradation agents could lead to a loss of their structural integrity, in the absence of appropriate maintenance. An early assessment of the decay is even more important when the wooden structures are part of historical buildings, in the interest of conservation of cultural heritage. This article presents an application of microwave reflectometry for the in situ evaluation of timber structures. The measurement system allows detecting anomalies inside the material in a non-destructive and non-invasive manner. The reflection coefficient is measured by means of a vector network analyzer (VNA) using a double-ridge antenna which transmits the continuous-wave (CW) microwave signal and receives the signal reflected by the material under investigation. Measurements on laboratory models demonstrated the feasibility of the method. Results obtained on timber beam sections, compared with the findings of traditional investigation methodologies, demonstrate the potentiality of microwave reflectometry, suggesting its possible usefulness during the diagnostic phase as a non-invasive tool for preliminary screening. The present paper deals with wood from Venice historic centre foundation elements. Samples were taken from both piles and planking (horizontal elements positioned above the pile heads), in 5 out of 6 districts of Venice. Considering the watery milieu, the diagnostic methodology for waterlogged archaeological wood was adopted, performing anatomical, chemical and physical characterisations. Our results show that the wood used for Venetian foundation elements belong to a small group of 5–6 species (alder, larch, oak, pine, elm and spruce, although the latter was probably of more recent introduction). Most of the analysed samples evidenced decay, which in some cases was high (residual basic densities of only 32%, and values of the ratio holocellulose to lignin as low as 0.3). It was evidenced how the state of preservation of wood was related to several factors, including: thickness of the element, depth of burial, horizontal/vertical position, and wood species. It was also shown how ash content does not reflect the state of preservation of waterlogged material, as it is sometimes reported in the literature. This paper outlines the physical characterisation of findings of woods from the excavation of the Etruscan–Roman ancient harbour of Pisa. The physical characterisation deals with measurements of wood density, shrinkages and maximum water content. The measurements are performed with a methodology specifically set up for the archaeological wet material, not applicable as standardised international methodologies. Physical characterisation is necessary to measure the wood decay, through a useful decay index, and to define the consolidation strategies for the recovery of the wooden findings, for their conservation and enjoyment. Results confirm the high decay of wood samples, probably due to the almost complete loss of the cellulose fraction of the cell walls, shown by the very low basic density (average value less than 0.2 g/cm3) and the high water content (more than 500%). The parameter of the residual basic density seems less useful for the identification of the consolidation strategy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Present work describes the application of NIR spectroscopy coupled with Partial least square (PLS) regression to estimate the residual chemical composition (in terms of holocellulose and lignin) of wood decayed by attack of biotic agents (such as bacteria) when preserved for a long-time in waterlogged conditions. The evaluations allowed assessing how various parameters may influence the predictive ability of calibration models. These parameters include: pre-processing manipulations (first and second derivatives curves, both normalized and not, were compared with baseline corrected spectra), the ranges used for model calibration, the preliminary conditioning of the samples (meals conditioned at both 22 °C/50% r.h. and 60 °C), and the way to take account of the presence of inorganic fillers permeating wood. To such aim, 59 samples from different excavations were considered, with samples belonging to several hardwoods and softwoods ( Alnus sp.p., Cupressus sempervirens , Larix decidua , Picea abies , Pinus sp.p., Quercus sp.p., Ulmus sp.p.), and to different states of preservation and burial environments. Values used for calibration were obtained by conventional wet analyses. Results showed that NIR spectroscopy coupled with PLS multivariate analysis could be used to reliably assess the residual chemical composition of waterlogged decayed wood provided that the calibration range is carefully selected and that original data are suitably pre-processed. However, the best models were different for the two considered components (lignin and holocellulose) and depending on which data set (softwoods or hardwoods) the samples belonged. Abstract: Some acetone-carried consolidants for waterlogged archaeological wood were tested in order to evaluate treatments able to save time and energy. In details, colophony (rosin), two esterified colophonies (Rosin 100® and Rosin 459®), a mixture of colophony with PEG 3400 and a vinyl acetate - vinyl versate copolymer (Vinavil 8020S®) were tested. The treatments were carried out at temperatures of 20 and 35 °C on waterlogged maritime pine, elm, oak and beech. The materials came from the archaeological site of the ancient ships of Pisa (Tuscany, Italy) and were dated back to VII cent. BC – II cent. AD. To evaluate the processes, equilibrium moisture content and dimensional stability of treated wood samples at different relative humidity, and retention of impregnating products were measured; moreover macroscopic and microscopic examination were also run to respectively assess the shape and appearance of treated wood and the way of deposition of consolidants. The results highlighted that natural and modified colophony treatments gave the most satisfactory results both in the maintenance of shape and dimensions of samples and in the stabilization with respect to RH variations. Moreover, the equilibrium moisture contents of samples treated with R100 and R459 were much reduced in comparison to the other consolidants and to untreated archaeological wood. This fact was related to the high retention values of those products that occluded most of the porosity including the microporosity of cell walls. Therefore, in terms of higroscopicity treated wood was more similar to impregnating substances rather than to decayed wood. This fact was considered helpful in contrasting the moisture-related negative effects in cases of eventual faults in the climate control during e.g. exhibition and in protecting treated wood from the risks of new fungal attacks.
