Korea is well known for long work hours. This study examined the effect of not only the total amount of working time but also work schedules on individuals' subjective well-being in Korea. Drawing on the 2014 Korean Time Use Survey data, the authors selected currently employed people aged 19–65 and examined the effects of total work hours as well as work schedules on feeling rushed, feeling tired, and life satisfaction. Based on the ordered logistic regression analysis, long work hours were negatively related to subjective well-being regardless of work schedules. After adding an interaction between standard and nonstandard work schedules, the study found that while work hours during both standard and nonstandard schedules are associated with declines in psychological status, the negative effect of working time during nonstandard work schedules on subjective well-being is stronger as the work hours during standard schedules decrease. Despite a widespread belief in both the academic and public policy literatures that working long hours is deleterious to health and well-being, our critical review of this large and complex literature fails to support a robust direct causal effect of work hours on either physical or mental well-being outcomes. Large-scale epidemiological studies, many of which are prospective and include objective health outcome measures, support a statistically significant association between long work hours and coronary heart disease and depression, but the effect sizes are very small. Moreover, there is an absence of true longitudinal studies that assess the consistency of working long hours over time and its relationship to well-being. Our review suggests that the effects of working long hours are nuanced in that they may vary considerably for different working populations based on gender, age, working conditions, and other factors. Primary and meta-analytic studies suggest that such moderator effects are plausible, yet rigorous testing of these remains to be done. Previous research has shown that labour supply – especially of partnered women with supplemental incomes – is positively associated with homeownership status. This literature is advanced by testing whether wanting to move into homeownership before the actual entry into homeownership affects individuals’ labour supply in couples. The empirical analysis is based on longitudinal data from the British Household Panel Survey (1991–2008). Fixed-effects panel regression models are used to predict the labour supply of women and men separately. Labour supply changes associated with homeownership are found to mainly occur when individuals want to move into homeownership and prior to the actual entry into homeownership. When wanting to move into homeownership, women and men increase their labour supply, where women are more likely to take up work and men to increase work hours. For women, the association between wanting to move into homeownership and labour supply is moderated by regional house price changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the increase in the annual hours worked per employee in the U.S. over the last thirty years. During the same period, work hours decreased in many European nations. Women employees' annual paid hours are still much less than men's annual paid hours. Paid hours for all employees fell during the recession.

Work–life interference is important for school-aged workers because it influences their educational outcomes/career aspirations. Although research highlights the role of work hours in determining work–life interference for these workers, work/job-level characteristics have received limited attention. Using survey data from Queensland school students who work part-time, we assess the influence of a range of employment-level variables on work–life interference. The results of multiple regression analysis indicate work–life interference is exacerbated by having low trust in managers and limited scope to refuse work hours and stability in work hours, emphasising the importance of organisational variables in integrating work and non-work spheres for school-aged workers. Using data from the first two waves of the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study for 338 women and 262 men, we examine the consequences of making the transition to parenthood for life satisfaction, loneliness, positive affect, negative affect, and partnership satisfaction. We extend previous work by taking transitions in partner status and work hours into account. Results show a moderate impact of becoming a parent on well-being. In so far as effects of making the transition to parenthood emerge, they are attributable to changes in partner status and work hours. First, the decrease in negative affect upon making the transition to motherhood is attributable to the group of women who increase their working hours. Second, the detrimental impact of making the transition to motherhood on partnership satisfaction is attributable to the group of new mothers who quit their job. Third, the detrimental impact of making the transition to fatherhood on loneliness is attributable to the group of new fathers who become married. There is one exception to this pattern of partner status and work hours as mechanisms for changes in well-being. Men who become fathers remain less satisfied with their partnership, even when transitions in partner status and work hours have been taken into account. In the discussion-section, we consider the possible underestimation of negative effects because of the focus on the continuously partnered. We also reflect on our results in the light of the high incidence of part-time work in the Netherlands and Dutch policies aimed at supporting new parents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Since the fee-for-service reimbursement mechanism has been under the global budget of the National Health Insurance program, physicians'' workloads have been increasing. Attending physicians in medical centers usually have long working hours because of their clinical work as well as teaching, research, and other administrative responsibilities. Many studies regarding reasonable work hours for physicians have been undertaken globally, but few have been conducted in Taiwan. In this study, we focused on the difference in working hours among physicians in different departments. Methods: Using attending physicians from a major teaching hospital as the study population, we adopted self-administered questionnaires to investigate physicians'' time allocations for 4 major categories: clinical work, teaching, research, and administrative work. We distributed 432 questionnaires and received 380 filled-out questionnaires, yielding a response rate of 88%. After eliminating questionnaires with incomplete responses, the valid sample size was 376. We used t test and 1-way ANOVA to analyze the association between physicians'' characteristics and workload and used multiple linear regression to examine factors influencing physicians'' work hours. Results: The average weekly work time among attending physicians was 65.6 hours; physicians under the age of 40 worked an average of 69.8 hours. Males worked an average of 66.2 hours weekly and females an average of 62.7 hours. Total work hours and hours of clinical work, teaching, research, and administrative work all reached significant differences among departments. Physicians who were under 40 years old, those with a doctoral degree, those with a teaching position as associate professor or above, and those working in anesthesiology had longer total work hours. Conclusion: This study found that work hours among departments differed significantly and that physicians in surgical departments spend the longest hours in clinical work. Those in administrative positions are most involved in clinical work. However, work hours do not definitely represent work intensity, and to define the workload by working hours may be inappropriate for some departments. This study examined associations between exposure to shift-work and risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and whether the associations are explained by socio-economic circumstances, occupational factors or health behaviours. Biological risk factors for CVD were measured in 7,839 participants of the 1958 British birth cohort at age 45 years who were in paid employment. Regular (≥1/week) shift-workers included 46% working evenings (1800–2200), 28% weekends, 13% nights (2200–0400) and 14% early mornings (0400–0700). Adverse levels of several CVD risk factors were found in association with increasing participation in any shift-work. Men regularly working all four shift-work types had increased CVD risk factors of approximately 0.1–0.2 standard deviations (e.g. 0.8 kg/m2 for body mass index; 1.2 cm for waist circumference) than those not regularly working shifts; for women, there was a positive linear trend for triglyceride levels, but a negative trend for diastolic blood pressure. Separate analyses of shift-work types showed associations primarily for night/morning working rather than evening/weekend working. Men had adverse levels of all CVD risk factors except blood pressure and total-cholesterol in association with night or early morning work and women had adverse triglyceride levels. Adjustment for socioeconomic, occupational factors and health behaviours explained most associations except for adiposity and C-reactive protein. Our results highlight night and early morning working associations with an adverse profile of CVD risk factors, which are partly explained by socioeconomic, other occupational factors and health behaviours. Abstract: It is often claimed that shift workers give priority to long series of days off and therefore prefer compressed work schedules at the expense of what is optimal for long-term health. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the attitude to six new shift systems among a randomly selected sample of police officers. The results showed that the most popular shift system was a rapidly, forward, rotating schedule with at least 16h of rest between shifts, despite that it had fewer days off compared with some of the compressed shift systems. However, the individual differences were large and many individuals (32%) disliked the rapidly rotating shift system. Young age was associated with a positive attitude to the rapidly rotating shift system. The attitude to the shift system was also influenced by the present schedule, and shift systems that were similar to the present work hours received more positive evaluation. Sleep and health complaints showed no association with the attitude to the shift systems. In conclusion, the shift workers attitude to the new schedules was partly in agreement with the ergonomic recommendations of the design of three-shift systems that will facilitate sufficient sleep and minimize negative health consequences. OBJECTIVE. To mitigate the risks of fatigue-related medical errors, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education introduced work hour limits for resident physicians in 2003. Our goal was to determine whether work hours, sleep, and safety changed after implementation of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education standards. METHODS. We conducted a prospective cohort study in which residents from 3 large pediatric training programs provided daily reports of work hours and sleep. In addition, they completed reports of near-miss and actual motor vehicle crashes, occupational exposures, self-reported medical errors, and ratings of educational experience. They were screened for depression and burnout. Concurrently, at 2 of the centers, data on medication errors were collected prospectively by using an established active surveillance method. RESULTS. A total of 220 residents provided 6007 daily reports of their work hours and sleep, and 16 158 medication orders were reviewed. Although scheduling changes were made in each program to accommodate the standards, 24- to 30-hour shifts remained common, and the frequency of residents' call remained largely unchanged. There was no change in residents' measured total work hours or sleep hours. There was no change in the overall rate of medication errors, and there was a borderline increase in the rate of resident physician ordering errors, from 1.06 to 1.38 errors per 100 patient-days. Rates of motor vehicle crashes, occupational exposures, depression, and self-reported medical errors and overall ratings of work and educational experiences did not change. The mean length of extended-duration (on-call) shifts decreased 2.7% to 28.5 hours, and rates of resident burnout decreased significantly (from 75.4% to 57.0%). CONCLUSIONS. Total hours of work and sleep did not change after implementation of the duty hour standards. In the late-nineteenth century, Australia had one of the highest levels of income per capita in the world. Over the twentieth century, Australia's exceptional position declined as its high labour force participation rate and male-skewed gender ratio gradually aligned with other countries. A similar reversion occurred in the other important components underlying Australia's high productivity, such as work hours. As the structure of the economy shifted away from a reliance on agricultural and towards manufacturing, Australia's protective attitude and restrictive business practices may have exacerbated its loss in productivity. The article presents the research about the relation of long work hours to a wide range of risks to workers, families, employers and community in the U.S. According to the author, the risks are speculated to stem from less time to recover from work and less time to attend to non-work responsibilities. Several risks to workers include sleep deprivation and poor recovery from work, while risks to families include delayed marriages. Details of the risks to employers and community are presented.

Significant differences exist in actual and preferred work hours by race. Specifically, black males work 20 percent fewer annual hours than white males. The differences between black and white women are small. Black workers are significantly more likely than white workers to prefer additional work and fewer are satisfied with their current hours of work. I use the hours-inequality hypothesis of Bell and Freeman (1995, 1997) to evaluate the extent to which race differences in work hours and hours preferences are related to race differences in incentives, I demonstrate that whereas white workers work longer hours in response to overall wage variation in their relevant labor market cell, black workers react to the wage variation among black workers but not to the variation overall. The fact that labor market incentives are different for otherwise similar black and white workers is difficult to reconcile with standard competitive theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An eclectic framework is developed to understand long-term and short-term patterns in worktime, and to explain labor market anomalies such as the downward inflexibility of the workweek and coexistence of underemployment and overemployment. Neoclassical labor demand and supply models focus narrowly on monetary cost and individual welfare consequences. Post-Keynesian, institutionalist, and radical political economy paradigms suggest work hours and institutions regulating its adjustment also reflect uncertainty, relative incomes, internal labor markets, custom, power, and effort-regulation. Work hours have three measurable dimensions—mean duration, variability, and dynamic flexibility. Employers seek "numerical flexibility," and households desire minimal conflict with non-worktime activities. If irreconciliable, length and allocation outcomes will be determined by relative bargaining power. Given evidence of imperfect sorting in labor markets according to hours preferences, and that flexible hour arrangements favorably affect productivity or personnel cost (an "efficiency hours" hypothesis), innovative government policies are suggested which would induce firms to better synchronize their aims with diversifying employee preferences.
