The isothermal section of the Lu–Fe–Ga ternary system at 773 K was investigated and constructed based on X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Thirteen binary compounds, Lu2Fe17, Lu6Fe23, LuFe2, LuGa3, LuGa2, Lu3Ga5, LuGa, Lu3Ga2, Lu5Ga3, Fe3Ga, Fe6Ga5, Fe3Ga4, FeGa3, nine ternary solid solutions, T1-LuFe2–1.43Ga0–0.57, T2-LuFe1.34–0.92Ga0.68–1.08, T3-LuFe0.52–0.26Ga1.48–1.74, T5-LuFe2.04–1.72Ga0.96–1.28, T6-Lu6Fe23–21.4Ga0–1.6, T7-Lu2Fe17–14.5Ga0–3.5, T8-Lu2Fe12.9–8.1Ga4.1–8.9, T9-LuFe6.8–5.5Ga5.2–6.5, T10-LuFe5.2–4.5Ga6.8–7.5, and two ternary compounds, T4-LuFe2.35Ga0.65and T11-Lu2FeGa8have been confirmed. The phase equilibria in the magnesium (Mg) rich corner of the Mg-Er-Sn ternary system at 300, 400 and 500 °C have been determined through key alloy method by means of x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with assistance of energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that in the composition range of our studied, each isothermal section consists of five single-phase regions, seven two-phase regions, and three three-phase regions, four compounds, i.e. MgSn, ErMgSn, ErSn and ErMg are found in equilibrium with the Mg solid solution. The homogeneity ranges of Mg solid solution as well as the solid solubilities of the intermediate phases at different temperatures are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The crystal structure of a new compound, Cu5Ho7Sb has been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method. The investigated compound crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/nbm (No. 125) with a new structure type and a=0.62008(3) nm, c=0.87807(4) nm and z=1. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: High-density submicrometer-sized Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferrite ceramics were prepared by spark plasma sintering in conjunction with sufficient high energy ball milling. They were evaluated by different characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and dielectric and magnetic measurements. All samples prepared at sintering temperatures ranging from 850 to 925°C exhibit a single spinel phase and their relative densities and grain sizes range from 90% to 99% and ~100nm to ~300nm, respectively. The dielectric constant increases with decreasing grain size until ~250nm, and then decreases dramatically with further decreasing grain size. The saturation magnetization increases continuously with increasing grain size/density but the magnetic coercivity decreases. The highest dielectric constant and saturation magnetization at room temperature are approximately 1.0×105 and 84.4emu/g, respectively, while the lowest magnetic coercivity is only around 15Oe. These outstanding properties may be associated with high density and uniform microstructure created by spark plasma sintering. Therefore, the spark plasma sintering is a promising technique for fabricating high-quality NiZn ferrites with high saturation magnetization and low coercivity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A portion of the isothermal section (1173K) of the phase diagram of the Gd–Co–Al ternary system (up to 33.3at.% Gd) were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Fourteen single-phase regions (including solid solution regions of the binary compounds), twenty-five two-phase regions and twelve three-phase regions were found to exist at this isothermal section. In the GdCo2–GdAl2 system, the existence of the GdCo0.74Al1.26 phase is identified and it has a composition range of 30–45at.% Al, the maximum solid solubility of Al in GdCo2 is about 15at.%, and Co in GdAl2 is about 16at.%. Besides, the maximum solid solubility of Al in Co, Gd2Co17 and GdCo5 is about 6, 17 and 25at.%, respectively, the maximum solid solubility of Gd in Co, CoAl is below 2at.% and the solid solubility range is from 47 to 61at.% Al in CoAl phase. Abstract: The structure, magnetic property and magnetocaloric effect of GdCo2−x Al x (, 0.06, 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.4) compounds have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurement techniques. The experimental results show that the GdCo2−x Al x () compounds are single phase with a Laves-phase MgCu2-type structure. The Curie temperature initially increases, and then decreases with increasing Al content. The maximum value of , 418 K, is reached for the compound with . The magnetic entropy change, which is determined from the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization by the Maxwell relation, decreases almost linearly with increasing Al content. Some primary crystalline phases of the Co–Ni–Sb and the Co–Fe–Sb systems are studied on the basis of the crystalline structure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the microstructure observation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the composition determination by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and the phase equilibrium relations of the constituent binary systems. From the experimental measurements of the present work and the phase equilibrium relations of literature reports, the liquidus projections of the Co–Ni–Sb and the Co–Fe–Sb ternary systems are determined. There exist 6 primary crystalline phases in each of the ternary systems, which are γ(A1)–Fcc_A1, β(Co,Ni)3Sb–D03, γ(Co,Ni)Sb–NiAs, ζ(Co,Ni)Sb2–FeS2, η(Co,Ni)Sb3–CoAs3 and Sb–Rhombo_A7 in the Co–Ni–Sb system and γ(A1)–Fcc_A1, α(A2)–Bcc_A2, γ(Co,Fe)Sb–NiAs, ζ(Co,Fe)Sb2–FeS2, η(Co,Fe)Sb3–CoAs3 and Sb–Rhombo_A7 in the Co–Fe–Sb system. Two of invariant reactions are proposed, which are the eutectic reaction L→ γ(A1)+ β(Co,Ni)3Sb+ γ(Co,Ni)Sb in the Co–Ni rich side of the Co–Ni–Sb system and the transition reaction L+ γ(A1)→ α(A2)+ γ(Co,Fe)Sb in the Co–Fe rich side of the Co–Fe–Sb system. Abstract: DyCo2−x Ga x alloys with x from 0 to 2 were prepared by arc melting and investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Six ternary compounds with different Ga contents x, DyCo2, DyCo1.33Ga0.67, DyCoGa, DyCo0.67–0.35Ga1.33–1.65, DyCo0.25–0.15Ga1.75–1.85, and DyGa2, were formed in the system. The crystal structures of these compounds were determined by Rietveld refinement method with TOPAS V3.0 software. The Rietveld refinements reveal that DyCo1.33Ga0.67 crystallized in the MgZn2-type structure (P63/mmc) with a = 5.414(1) and c = 8.452(1) Å, DyCoGa in the Co2Si-type structure (Pnma) with a = 7.052(1), b = 4.393(1) and c = 6.958(1) Å, DyCo0.5Ga1.5 in the GdPdSi-type structure (Imma) with a = 4.341(1), b = 7.007(1) and c = 7.551(1) Å, and DyCo0.2Ga1.8 in the AlB2-type structure (P6/mmm) with a = 4.339(1) and c = 3.634(1) Å. Abstract: The isothermal section of the Dy–Fe–Sb ternary system at 773K has been investigated mainly by X-ray powder diffraction in this work. The existence of eight binary compounds and one ternary compound were conformed in this system. The section consists of twelve single-phase regions, twenty-two two-phase regions and eleven three-phase regions. The compound Dy4Sb3 was not stable at 773K. The homogeneity range of ɛ (FeSb) phase extended from about 44at.% Sb to 46at.% Sb and the maximum solid solubility of Sb in Fe phase is about 3at.% Sb at 773K. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the La–Fe–Sb ternary system at 773K has been investigated mainly by X-ray powder diffraction with the aid of metallographic analysis and electron probe microanalysis techniques. Two ternary compounds Fe4LaSb12 and LaFe2Sb2 have been confirmed and LaFe2Sb2 is a new ternary compound which was found in this system at 773K. This isothermal section consists of 12 single-phase regions, 23 two-phase regions and 12 three-phase regions. According to the results of experiment, the homogeneity range of ɛ(FeSb) phase extended from about 44 to 46at.% Sb, the maximum solid solubility of La in ɛ phase is about less than 1at.% La at 773K. The solubilities for the other single-phase regions were not observed. The structure type for LaFe2Sb2 is Ga2S3-type (sp. gr. Cc (No. 9), a =0.45518nm, b =0.77737nm, c =0.84207nm, β =128.3946°). Four ternary compounds Fe4PrSb12, FePrSb2, Fe13Pr6Sb and FePrSb3 have been confirmed and a new ternary compound PrFe2Sb2 was found in this system at 773K. The isothermal section consists of 16 single-phase regions, 33 two-phase regions and 19 three-phase regions. The homogeneity range of ɛ (FeSb) phase extended from about 44at.% Sb to 46at.% Sb. The solubilities for the other single-phase regions were not observed. The structure type for PrFe2Sb2 is Ga2S3-type (sp. gr. Cc (no. 9), a =0.60719nm, b =0.60867nm, c =1.33051nm, β=103.1°). This isothermal section consists of 12 single-phase regions, 21 two-phase regions and 10 three-phase regions. The homogeneity range of FeSb phase extended from about 44 to 46at.% Sb. Binary compounds, FeSb, FeSb2, Fe17Gd2, Fe3Gd, Fe2Gd, Gd5Sb3, Gd4Sb3, GdSb and Gd16Sb39 have been confirmed while no ternary compound has been observed.
