Abstract

The 100-m X-ray Test Facility of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) was initially proposed in 2012 for the test and calibration of the X-ray detectors of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) with the capability to support future X-ray missions. The large instrument chamber connected with a long vacuum tube can accommodate the X-ray mirror, focal plane detector and other instruments. The X-ray sources are installed at the other end of the vacuum tube with a distance of 105 m, which can provide an almost parallel X-ray beam covering 0.2 ∼ 60 keV energy band. The X-ray mirror modules of the Einstein Probe (EP) and the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP) and payload of the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) have been tested and calibrated with this facility. It has been also used to characterize the focal plane camera and aluminum filter used on the Einstein Probe. In this paper, we will introduce the overall configuration and capability of the facility, and give a brief introduction of some calibration results performed with this facility. Abstract

To prevent the x-ray detectors from the interference of optical photons, x-ray filters are widely used in x-ray space missions. As the flux of low energy x-rays would be significantly attenuated by the filters, it is important to derive the transmittance of the filters below 10 keV. In this paper, we present a simple experimental apparatus and data processing method to measure the transmittance curve of x-ray filters in the energy range from 1.6 to 10 keV. The measured spectra were further processed with Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation results and a direct demodulation algorithm. The obtained transmittance is in good accordance with the theoretical calculation and the synchrotron radiation test result, which proves that the proposed system with the algorithm is a reasonable way to characterize the x-ray transmittance performance of filters above 1.6 keV. Abstract

An observation simulator is established, on an event-by-event basis, for the Polarimetry Focusing telescope Array (PFA) on board the planned enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry observatory (eXTP). An event generator, based on XIMPOL, is used to sample the parameters of the X-rays reaching the aperture of the telescope. The trajectories and interactions of X-rays through the telescope and the corresponding secondaries are calculated using the optics and detector simulation model built in GEANT4, before being translated into signals in the pixelated readout electronics. It is shown that mirror deformation is required for the optics simulation model, and transportation of ionization electrons is required for the detector simulation model to reproduce the overall performance of the telescope. The developed tool is useful in different mission phases, such as payload optimization in the design phase, discrimination of new phenomena against known physics models in the calibration phases, and sensitivity studies of potential polarized X-ray sources in observation planning. The sensitivity of PFA to the Crab Nebula and Crab pulsar is investigated to demonstrate the application of the tool. Even with the dilution effect, space-resolved and phase-resolved polarimetry can reveal important aspects of the Crab Nebula and Crab pulsar and help break the degeneracy between different models. 5. Visible light performance of x-ray filters for Einstein probe.

Abstract

To achieve accurate detection of different space x-ray sources, three types of filters are designed for the follow-up x-ray telescope onboard the Einstein probe (EP). Two of them are supported by PI mesh and Ni stiffener, which are studied in this paper. Since visible light blocking performance of these filters is important for x-ray detection, the transmittance and visible light irradiation damage performance of them are measured and presented. With a self-built double-beam laser system, the detection sensitivity of transmittance at 532 nm is increased to 10 − 9 compared with 10 − 5 for the spectrophotometer. Moreover, the tests of visible light irradiation damage performance under vacuum and air conditions have been carried out using this system, which proves that the filters have good reliability. Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Abstract

GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10-23 for photons in the γ- ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivity. Gamma-Ray Bursts, occurring at cosmological distances, could be used to detect this tiny signature of space-time granularity. This can be obtained by coherently combine a huge number of small instruments distributed in space to act as a single detector of unprecedented effective area. This is the first example of high-energy distributed astronomy: a new concept of modular observatory of huge overall collecting area consisting in a fleet of small satellites in low orbits, with sub-microsecond time resolution and wide energy band (keV-MeV). The enormous number of collected photons will allow to effectively search these energy dependent delays. Moreover, GrailQuest will allow to perform temporal triangulation of impulsive events with arc-second positional accuracies: an extraordinary sensitive X-ray/Gamma all-sky monitor crucial for hunting the elusive electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Waves, that will play a paramount role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. A pathfinder of GrailQuest is already under development through the HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) project: a fleet of six 3U cube-sats to be launched by the end of 2022.
