In order to prepare high ionic conductivity and robust mechanical properties of alkaline solid polyelectrolyte (ASPE) for applications in flexible wearable devices, a co-continuous structure membrane was designed using in-situ polymerization to introduce cross-linked polyacrylic acid (N-PAA) into the cellulose network constructed by regenerated degreasing cotton (RDC). The resultant ASPE membrane showed high ionic conductivity (430 mS·cm -1 at 25 °C), strong mechanical properties, and excellent alkaline stabilities, proving the viability of cellulose for use in energy storage systems. Surprisingly, the sandwich-shaped zinc-air battery assembled using RDC/N-PAA/KOH membranes as electrolytes exhibits superior values of cycling stability, discharge time, specific capacity (731.5 mAh·g -1 ), peak power density (40.25 mW·cm -2 ), and mechanical flexibility. The strong activity of water molecules causes a series of parasitic side reactions on Zn anodes in the aqueous electrolytes. Herein, we introduce silk fibroin (SF) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive for aqueous zinc-ion (Zn-ion) batteries. The secondary structure transformation of SF molecules from α-helices to random coils in the aqueous electrolytes allows them to break the hydrogen bond network among free water molecules and participate in Zn 2+ ion solvation structure. The SF molecules released from the [Zn(H 2 O) 4 (SF)] 2+ solvation sheath appear to be gradually adsorbed on the surface of Zn anodes and in situ form a hydrostable and self-healable protective film. This SF-based protective film not only shows strong Zn 2+ ion affinity to promote homogeneous Zn deposition but also has good insulating behavior to suppress parasitic reactions. Benefiting from these multifunctional advantages, the cycle life of the Zn||Zn symmetric cells reaches over 1600 h in SF-containing ZnSO 4 electrolytes. In addition, by adopting a potassium vanadate cathode, the full cell shows excellent cycling stability for 1000 cycles at 3 A g -1 . The in situ construction of a protective film on the Zn anode from natural protein molecules provides an effective strategy to achieve high-performance Zn metal anodes for Zn-ion batteries.

Although aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising for scalable energy storage application, the actual performance of ZIBs is hampered by the irreversibility. Optimization of electrolyte composition is a relatively practical and facile way to improve coulombic efficiency (CE) and Zn plating/stripping reversibility of ZIBs. N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMA) has a higher Gutmann donor number (DN) than that of H 2 O, abundant polar groups, and economic price. Herein, a mixture electrolyte containing 10 vol% DMA and ZnSO 4 , which has an enhanced Zn reversibility almost fourfold higher than that of pure ZnSO 4 electrolyte, is demonstrated. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation and spectroscopic analysis reveal DMA has the ability to reconstruct the solvation structure of Zn 2+ and capture free water molecules via forming Hbonds. The inhibited dendrite growth on Zn anode is further clarified by an in situ characterization. This work provides a feasible way for the development of long-lifespan ZIBs., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The purpose of this study was to assess the possible protective role of exogenous salicylic acid (SA), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a donor of nitric oxide, and their combination on 21-day-old safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seedlings grown under zinc (Zn) stress. The results revealed that exposure to 500 µM ZnSO 4 .7H 2 O for 10 days markedly reduced the root and shoot dry weights in Zn-treated plants, while the application of SA, SNP and specially SA + SNP significantly increased the root and shoot dry weights in seedlings subjected to Zn stress. Addition of SA, SNP and SA + SNP interestingly reduced root-to-shoot translocation of zinc and increased significantly the level of glutathione (GSH) and ascorbate (ASC) in leaves of Zn-stressed plants. The Zn-treated plants supplemented with SA and SNP revealed an improved activity of ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzymes and those enzymes which are involved in glyoxalase system as compared to the plants treated with Zn only. However, no significant relationship was found between SA or SNP supplementation and glutathione S-transferase activity in Zn-stressed plants. These findings demonstrate that exogenous application of SA or SNP could ameliorate the negative effects of Zn on safflower plants probably by stimulation of antioxidant defense and glyoxalase systems.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess unique properties desirable for delivery of drugs and gaseous therapeutics, but their uncharacterized interactions with cells raise increasing concerns of their safety in such biomedical applications. We evaluated the adverse effects of zinc nanoscale MOFs on the cell morphology, cytoskeleton, cell viability and expression of neurotrophin signaling pathway-associated GAP-43 protein in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. At the concentration of 25 μg/ml, zinc MOFs did not significantly affect morphology, viability and membrane integrity of the cells. But at higher concentrations (over 100 μg/ml), MOFs exhibited a time- and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity, indicating their entry into the cells via endocytosis where they release Zn(2+) into the cytosol to cause increased intracellular concentration of Zn(2+). We demonstrated that the toxicity of MOFs was associated with a disrupted cellular zinc homeostasis and down-regulation of GAP-43 protein, which might be the underlying mechanism for the improved differentiation in PC12 cells.
