MO-doped ZnO ceramics have been synthesized through the conventional ceramic processing route. Mn2+ ions have been incorporated into the ZnO lattice within the limits of solid solubility. By using X-band-frequency and high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), we have resolved some of the main electronic transitions for the S?=?5/2, I?=?5/2 high-spin system and have determined accurately the EPR spin-Hamiltonian parameters. By combining data from crystallographic X-ray diffraction and EPR with the semi-empirical Newman superposition model, we have found the local configurational position of Mn2+ and have confirmed the symmetry of the lattice. The results presented in this contribution indicate that Mn ions substitute at Zn sites in ZnO. The effect of Mn2+ ions on the intrinsic defects becomes remarkable, thus the vacancy related intrinsic defect signals cannot be visible in the EPR spectrum. Nano-sized ZnO doped with transition metals is one of the most promising candidates in the field of diluted magnetic semiconductors unifying ferromagnetic and semiconductor properties. Promising is the exploitation of the magnetic spin of the electron and by that the application in spintronics. As the mechanism of spin coupling is still controversial, insight into the coexistence and interaction of intrinsic and extrinsic effects is vital for further technological progress. We report on the synthesis of a set of nano-sized ZnMnO samples with a nominal concentration of x = 0.000005-0.03 and structural (XRD, TEM, and AFM), as well as electronic (PL, UV-Vis, FTIR, and EPR) investigations. In this contribution, possible interaction effects were summarized in terms of Mn doping and size. ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by solid state and hydrolysis methods based on the conventional precipitation. In situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles were monitored by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). By the help of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique, detailed analysis of intrinsic defect structure of ZnO was given with respect to mean particle size. In nanoscale concentration of surface defects enormously increased and core defects reduced. In addition, blue-shift was observed in PL spectra at near-band-edge UV region due to e–h recombination.
