The aim of this study was to report the species of haematophagous parasitic mites of Passer domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and analyze the infestation rates regarding to gender, body mass, and total length of the hosts. To do so, each of the 100 house sparrows captured in the urban area of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was identified by gender, weighed, and measured. The mite collection was carried out after applying an ectoparasite-repelling talc in the body of the birds. Pellonyssus reedi was found in 29 house sparrows with mean intensity of 8.37 mites/host and Ornithonyssus bursa was found in two birds, only one male host showing co-infestation. The prevalence and mean intensity of P. reedi between male and female adults did not show significant difference, nor was there any correlation among species abundance, body mass, and total length of the house sparrows. We report the occurrence of P. reedi and O. bursa parasitizing P. domesticus in the southern of Brazil.

A faunal study is presented to determine the species of ectoparasites found in the opossum Didelphis virginiana (Kerr) (Marsupialia: Didelphidae). For this, Tomahawk traps were placed in the peridomiciles of a rural town in Yucatán, to capture individuals of this marsupial and proceed to the collection of their ectoparasites. A total of 3,023 arthropods were collected from 145 opossums. The most frequent ectoparasites were the acarines Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) nr. talaje (64.8%) (Argasidae); Ornithonyssus wernecki Fonseca (53.8%) (Macronyssidae) and Didelphilicus serrifer Fain (25.5%) (Atopomelidae); the ticks Amblyomma parvum Aragão (8.3%) and A. mixtum Koch (10.3%) (Ixodidae); and the fleas Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché) (20.7%) and Pulex simulans Baker (8.3%) (Pulicidae). It is concluded that the ectoparasite fauna of this marsupial is mainly composed of euryxenous organisms, which have been documented as vectors of diseases caused by rickettsial bacteria. Since D. virginiana is widely adapted to the peridomiciliary environment in the region, this study allows recognizing those that represent a potential risk for the transmission of vector-borne zoonotic diseases.

Parasite populations are never evenly distributed among the hosts they infect. Avian nest ectoparasites, such as mites, are no exception, as their distribution across the landscape is highly aggregated. It remains unclear if this pattern is driven by differences in transmission events alone, or if the environment that parasites inhabit after transmission also plays a role. Here, we experimentally examined the influence of the post-transmission microclimate, nest characteristics, and host condition on ectoparasite population growth in a bird-ectoparasite system. We infested barn swallow (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster) nests with a standardized number of Northern Fowl Mites (Ornithonyssus sylvarium) and analyzed both biotic (nestling mass, wing length, number of other arthropods present in the nest, and brood size) and abiotic (temperature, humidity, nest lining, nest dimensions, and substrate upon which the nest was built) predictors of mite population growth. Our results suggest that mite populations were most successful, in terms of growth, in nests with higher temperatures, lower humidity, few other arthropods, and hosts in good condition. We also found that nests built on wooden substrates support larger populations of mites than those constructed on metal or concrete. A total of 13 individuals of the rodent Abrocoma bennetti were captured and 354 ectoparasites belonging to 10 different species were collected and analyzed. The most abundant species was the Phthiraptera Monogyropus longus (61.54%), followed by the Siphonaptera Neotyphloceras chilensis (38.46%). In this study Gyropus distinctus (15.38%) is reported as new record for A. bennetti, previously described for Octodon degus, a rodent usually living in sympatry with A. bennetti. For the first time the flea Delostichus smiti, and the mites Ornithonyssus sp. and Androlaelaps fahrenholzi are recorded in this rodent species.

There are diverse relationships between mites and birds or mammals. These mites may play an important role in epizootics and in the perpetuation of some significant diseases. The purpose of this study is to revise the current knowledge of mesostigmatic mites occurring on birds, including their nests and mammals and their substrates, in Iran and to compare the results with other regions of the Palearctic ecozone. This study presents a revised list of 38 species of mesostigmatic mite occuring on birds (17 species) and mammals (24 species) or in their nests/substrates in Iran. Dermanyssus gallinae, Ornithonyssus sylviarum and Parasitus hyalinus were found on both birds and mammals. The species composition of mites reported in Iran was compared with other regions of the Palearctic ecozone. Parasites, specifically those from genera Dermanyssus, Ornithonyssus and Liponyssoides, may be hazardous to human health. Species from these genera were predominant among the reported mites.

Los ectoparásitos representan un grupo muy diverso taxonómicamente, que incluye a las pulgas, piojos, ácaros y garrapatas, entre otros. El objetivo de este trabajo es ampliar el conocimiento sobre la fauna de ectoparásitos asociada a roedores y marsupiales de la provincia de Corrientes. Para este propósito, se tomaron muestras de 2 sitios suburbanos en la ciudad de Corrientes: Santa Ana de los Guácaras y San Patricio. Se examinaron 54 huéspedes mamíferos. Entre los marsupiales, se recolectaron 2 especies: Lutreolina crassicaudata y Didelphis albiventris. Los roedores analizados incluyen 3 especies: Cavia aperea, Oxymycterus rufus y Oligoryzomys sp. El número total de ectoparásitos recolectados fue de 469, que incluyen 5 géneros de ácaros: Androlaelaps Berlese, 1903, Gigantolaelaps Nesbitt, 1951, Laelaps Koch, 1836, Mysolaelaps Fonseca, 1935 y Ornithonyssus Sambon, 1928; 3 especies de garrapatas: Amblyomma ovale, A. dubitatum e Ixodes loricatus; 2 especies de pulgas: Polygenis axius y Polygenis bohlsi, y 3 piojos diferentes: Trimenopon hispidum, Gliricola sp. y Gyropus sp. Estos resultados proporcionan nuevos registros de huéspedes y localidad, así como, nuevas asociaciones parásito-huésped. Taxonomically, ectoparasites represent a very diverse group, which includes: fleas, lice, mites, and ticks, among others. The aim of this work is to extend the knowledge about the ectoparasite fauna associated with rodents and marsupials from Corrientes Province. For this purpose, 2 suburban sites in Corrientes City were sampled: Santa Ana de los Guácaras and San Patricio. Fifty-four mammal hosts were examined. Among the marsupials, 2 species were collected: Lutreolina crassicaudata Desmarest, 1804 and Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840. Wild birds may be considered a possible source of parasitic mesostigmatid mites for poultry, but only few studies explored this hypothesis. In addition, there is very little information about the parasitic mites present in commercial poultry systems from southern South America. To contribute with data on parasitic mesostigmatid mites at the domestic-wildlife interface, we conducted a study in which samples were systematically collected from laying hens and wild birds (adults and nestlings), for two years at three commercial laying hen farms. The occurrence of mesostigmatid mites were compared among hosts. A proportion of the collected mites were morphologically identified to the species level, finding that host preference varied greatly depending on mite species: laying hens were only parasitized by Ornithonyssus sylviarum, wild bird nestlings were mostly parasitized by Ornithonyssus bursa, and in small proportion, by O. sylviarum, while adult passerines were parasitized by both Ornithonyssus species, and sporadically by Pellonyssus cf. reedi and Dermanyssus cf. triscutatus. In laying hens, there was intra- and inter-annual variability in mite occurrence, but no consistent seasonal pattern, whereas in adult wild birds, mites showed the highest prevalence in spring and the lowest in summer. Not coinciding with this general pattern, the occurrence of O. bursa matched the reproductive activity of wild birds. A phylogenetic analysis based on a fragment of the 16S rRNA gene was carried out for a subsample of the mites collected, showing that the O. sylviarum mites present on adult wild birds and laying hens had the same haplotype (100% identity). Additionally, mites obtained from wild birds morphologically identified as O. bursa presented two distinctive haplotypes (89.8% identity), one phylogenetically related to O. sylviarum and the other to O. monteiroi. These findings show that in central Argentina commercial laying hens are parasitized mainly by O. sylviarum while wild birds are also hosts to other mite species. Ornithonyssus bursa es un parásito común en aves domésticas y silvestres de regiones tropicales y subtropicales que puede causar irritación, dermatitis severa y anemia. El estornino pinto (Sturnus vulgaris) es un ave invasora en Argentina. Tanto O. bursa como S. vulgaris tienen altas tasas de reproducción con implicaciones en salud pública. Los objetivos del estudio fueron reportar la presencia de este ácaro parasitando a los estorninos y comprobar la potencial asociación de bacterias a los ácaros. El estudio se realizó en la Estación de Cría de Animales Silvestres (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Los ácaros se obtuvieron de estorninos, se almacenaron en etanol 96% y se prepararon para su identificación al microscopio óptico. Se realizaron estudios moleculares con el fin de examinar la presencia de bacterias. Todos los ácaros se identificaron como O. bursa. Se detectó por primera vez la presencia de Wolbachia sp. asociada con el género Ornithonyssus. En contraste, los resultados fueron negativos para las especies de Rickettsia, Bartonella y Borrelia. Además del daño que producen los estorninos como una especie invasora en el centro de Argentina, se presenta la asociación de estas aves con O. bursa, lo que favorece la dispersión de los ácaros y su colonización hacia otras aves. The tropical fowl mite (Ornithonyssus bursa) is a common parasite of domestic and wild birds in tropical and subtropical regions. This mite can cause irritation, severe dermatitis and anemia. The European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is an invasive bird in Argentina. Both O. bursa and S. vulgaris have high reproductive rates with implications for public health. The goals of our study were to report the occurrence of this mite parasitizing the starlings, and test for the presence of bacteria that could be potentially associated with the mites. The study was conducted in Estación de Cría de Animales Silvestres (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Mites were collected from starlings and stored in 96% ethanol, and prepare for their identification under an optic microscope. Molecular studies were conducted in order to examine the presence of bacteria. All mites were identified as O. bursa. We detected for the first time Wolbachia sp., associated with the genus Ornithonyssus. In contrast, mites were negative for species of Rickettsia, Bartonella and Borrelia. In addition to the damage that the starlings produce as an invasive species in central Argentina, herein we report the association of these birds with O. bursa, favoring the dispersal of the mites and their colonization to other birds. Ornithonyssus hypertrichus n. sp. is described from four localities over a large area of the western nearctic region. Species characteristics include a high degree of hypertrichy on the opisthonotal portion of the female dorsal shield and the unarmed cuticule of the protonymph and adults, thus far unique within the genus. All specimens were collected from species of the cricetine rodent genus Peromyscus. A revised diagnosis is given for the genus Ornithonyssus. Keys are given to adult females, adult males, and protonymphs of the 6 species recognized as belonging to the genus Ornithonyssus in the nearctic region.

As one of ecological surveys of alien avian species in Japan, internal and external parasites of 4 individuals of Hwamei Garrulax canorus and 4 individuals of Red-billed Leiothrix Leiothrix lutea collected in Kanagawa, Tokyo, and Fukuoka Prefs., Japan during from July 1999to November 2001, were investigated. Ornithoica bistativa, Ornithomya avicularia cf. aobatoensis, Haemaphysalis flava and Centrorhynchus turdi were obtained from Hwamei, and Ornithonyssus sylvialum and Anonchotaenia sp, were obtained from the Leiothrixes, respectively. All of these external parasites and the acanthocephalan species are newly recorded from these two avian species in Japan.

Pellonyssus nidicolus Baker, Delfinado, and Abbatiello, 1976 es un nuevo sinónimo de Pellonyssus reedi (Zumpt y Patterson, 1952). La sinonimia de Pellonyssus passeri Clark y Yunker, 1956 con P. reedi se mantiene. Los ejemplares de Pellonyssus reportados por Estébanes-González (1997) son identificados aquí como pertenecientes en parte a P. reedi y en parte a P. marui Yunker y Radovsky, 1966, es el primer reporte de estas especies en México. La tercera especie identificada de Pellonyssus conocida en el Nuevo Mundo es un parásito de colibrís Pellonyssus gorgasi Yunker y Radovsky, 1966, previamente reportado de México. Las claves para identificación de hembras, machos y protoninfas de estas 3 especies se incluyen. Un carácter común se da para comparar rasgos distintivos de las hembras de 9 especies validas de Pellonysssus en el mundo. La subespecie Ornithonyssus sylviarum utrechtensis Micherdzinski, 1980 es sinonimizada con la subespecie nominal O. s. sylviarum (Canestrini y Fanzago, 1877).

Using the African diederik cuckoo Chrysococcyx caprius and four sympatric passerine foster species in the subfamily Ploceinae, we show that nestling cuckoos are infested by feather lice and mites derived from the ectoparasite fauna typical of the foster species. Adult cuckoos had five species of lice and mites normally found on ploceines, which demonstrates that these ectoparasites are able to survive on foreign hosts. This is the first record of persistence of passerine ectoparasites on a cuckoo. Adult diederik cuckoos also harboured four species of mites and lice specific to cuckoos; since these were not detected on nestlings, cuckoo-specific lice and mites apparently transfer to cuckoos after they leave the nest. Contrary to prediction, ectoparasites with a life cycle involving a permanent association with their host (feather mites and lice) were more likely to transfer to cuckoo nestlings than ectoparasites which spend part of their life cycle away from their host (haematophagous mites and phoretic skin mites). New host records are established for the lice genera Brueelia, Cuculoecus, Machaerilaemus, Myrsidea, Philopterus as well as for the mite species Microlichus americanus, Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithocheyla megaphallos, Pellonyssus reedi, Pteronyssoides passeris, Pternonyssus glossifer, Trouessartia baupi, T. carpi, Xolalges plocei, X. scaurus and the mite genus Passeroptes.

The introduction of an exotic species usually modifies parasite-host dynamics by the import of new parasites or the exotic species' acquiral of local parasites. The loss of parasites may determine the outcome of an invasion if the introduced species is liberated from co-evolved parasites in its range of invasion. In addition, an introduced species may pose sanitary risks to humans and other mammals if it serves as a reservoir of pathogens or carries arthropod vectors. The red-bellied squirrel, Callosciurus erythraeus (Pallas) (Rodentia: Sciuridae), was introduced into Argentina in 1970, since when several foci of invasion have been closely associated with humans. Investigation of the parasitological fauna of C. erythraeus in Argentina will generate new information about novel parasite-host dynamics and may provide new insight into the reasons for the successful invasion of this species. The objective of this study was to describe the arthropod parasites of C. erythraeus in Argentina in comparison with previous studies of parasites of this species in its native habitat and in the ranges of its invasion. Occasional host-parasite associations with local arthropod parasites not previously described for C. erythraeus are reported; these include the mites Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Ewing) (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) and Ornithonyssus cf. bacoti (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae), the flea Polygenis (Polygenis) rimatus Jordan (Siphonaptera: Rhopalopsyllidae) and the botfly Cuterebra Clark (Diptera: Oestridae: Cuterebrinae). Cheyletus sp. mites (Trombidiformes: Cheyletidae) were also found. The low prevalence and mean intensity of ectoparasite species may influence invasion dynamics.

Based on chaetotaxy of the dorsal shield, the taxonomic status of many species of Ornithonyssus has been considered invalid, resulting in the synonymy of all Brazilian Ornithonyssus from small terrestrial wild mammals into one of the following four species: Ornithonyssus bacoti (Hirst, 1913), Ornithonyssus matogrosso (Fonseca, 1954), Ornithonyssus pereirai (Fonseca, 1935) or Ornithonyssus wernecki (Fonseca, 1935). Despite the revision of this genus in 1980, including all known species worldwide, the knowledge of Ornithonyssus in Brazil has not progressed for more than 40 years. Considering the potential importance of these haematophagous mites in transmitting rickettsial disease agents to animals and humans, we have revised Ornithonyssus species collected from small mammals in Brazil by means of morphological and molecular studies. Types and other material deposited in the Acari Collection of the Instituto Butantan (IBSP) were examined in addition to recently collected specimens. Morphological and genetic analysis of the 16S rDNA mitochondrial gene revealed that small terrestrial mammals in Brazil are parasitized by six species of Ornithonyssus mites: Ornithonyssus brasiliensis (Fonseca, 1939), O. matogrosso, O. monteiroi (Fonseca, 1941), O. pereirai, O. vitzthumi (Fonseca, 1941), and O. wernecki. An illustrated key to females of the valid Brazilian species of Ornithonyssus is included, based on optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Eight species of ectoparasites were collected from 166 commensal rodents, including Rattus rattus (L.), Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout), and Mus musculus (L.), from January to December 1986, in Huambo, Angola. The oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild), was the predominant species with respect to mean intensity and prevalence. Other fleas collected were Ctenophthalmus (Ethioctenophthalmus) machadoi Ribeiro, Dinopsyllus (Dinopsyllus) smiti Ribeiro, and Echidnophaga gallinacea (Westwood). The mite Laelaps (Echinolaelaps) muricola Trägärdh, the louse Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister), one species of Ixodes Latreille, and one species of Ornithonyssus Sambon were also recorded. The following represent new host records: C. machadoi from R. rattus and R. norvegicus, D. smiti from M. musculus, and L. muricola from R. rattus and M. musculus. For the first time, the monthly flea indices throughout the year are presented for Angola.

We review the parasitic mites of the superfamily Dermanyssoidea found in the nests of Slovakian domestic and wild birds (and a few mammals), compiled from new data and literature sources. Three mite genera are included, namely Dermanyssus Duges (Dermanyssidae), Ornithonyssus Sambon and Pellonyssus Clark & Yunker (Macronyssidae), in which we recognised nine reliably documented species. Pellonyssus is represented by one species, Dermanyssus by five species, and Ornithonyssus by three species. We compiled information on the ecological requirements and host preferences of these mite species, including data on geographic distribution, altitudinal distribution, and occurrence in different habitats and nest types. An identification key to the species occurring in Slovakia is provided, together with taxonomic remarks on the identification and external morphology of some selected species. Parasitic mites have been reported from 119 taxa of Slovakian vertebrates (including man), of which 108 belong to 17 orders of birds. Dermanyssus americanus Ewing and Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese) are reported from Slovakia for the first time. Examination of older voucher material collected in Slovakia revealed many misidentified specimens: the name Dermanyssus hirundinis (Hermann) has been widely used for misidentified specimens of Dermanyssus carpathicus Zeman; D. americanus was confused with D. hirundinis; while O. bursa has been confused with Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago). Slovakia is the second country in Europe with known occurrence of the genus Pellonyssus.

Thirteen species of ectoparasitic (12) or phoretic (1) arthropods were collected from 26 adult Virginia opossums, Didelphis virginiana, live-trapped from April through September 1987 in Davidson County, Tennessee. The cat flea Ctenocephalides felis and the American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis were the predominant species with respect to mean intensity and prevalence. The macronyssid mite Ornithonyssus wernecki and the atopomelid mite Didelphilichus serrifer, both specific parasites of this host, showed high intensities but low prevalences. Other fleas collected were Cediopsylla simplex, Ctenophthalmus pseudagyrtes, and Orchopeas howardi. The tick Amblyomma americanum, the myobiid mite Archemyobia inexpectatus, and the trombiculid (chigger) mites Eutrombicula splendens, Leptotrombidium peromysci (first record from this host) and Neotrombicula cavicola (first record from this host), were also recorded. One phoretic species, the glycyphagid mite Marsupialichus brasiliensis, was noted.

Four new species of Ornithonyssus are described: O. acrobates from Acrobates pygmaeus (Shaw) (Marsupialia: Burramyidae); O. taphozous from Taphozous georgianus Thomas (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae); O. stigmaticus from T. flaviventris Peters; and O. campester from T. georgianus (principal host). Ornithonyssus latro Domrow is newly recorded from Eptesicus douglasorum Kitchener (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae); O. praedo Domrow from Rattus tunneyi (Thomas), Pseudomys nanus (Gould), Zyzomys argurus (Thomas) and Z. woodwardi (Thomas) (all Rodentia: Muridae), from Antechinus macdonnellensis (Spencer), Dasyurus hallucatus Gould, Phascogale tapoatafa (Meyer) and Sminthopsis crassicaudata (Gould) (all Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) and from Tarsipes spencerae Gray (Marsupialia: Tarsipedidae); and Pellonyssus reedi (Zumpt and Patterson) from Steganopleura bichenovii (Vigors and Horsfield) and Donacola castaneothorax (Gould) (both Passeriformes: Ploceidae) and Neophema bourkii (Gould) (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae, c...

An illustrated description is given for an Australian parasitic mite: Ornithonyssus praedo sp. n. (host Melomys cervinipes (Gould) (Muridae), Queensland).

Attacks on man by members of the family Gamasidae (suborder Mesostigmata) have been recorded on a worldwide basis. They not only cause irritating skin eruptions but are also known or suspected vectors of several rickettsial and viral diseases (Table 17.1). Hirst (1922) enumerated five species which attacked humans. The nomenclature of this group in the literature is very confusing because of the necessity for periodic revision of Classification as new species and facts are discovered. Suffice it to note that the various species of the genus Ornithonyssus have previously been included as Leiognathus, Liponyssus or Bdellonyssus, whilst Liponyssoides sanguineus has been termed Dermanyssus or Allodermanyssus sanguineus (Ewing 1923; Oudemans 1937; Da Fonseca 1948).

THE MITE ORNITHONYSSUS SYLVARIUM (C. AND F.) (ARACHNIDA: ACARINA-MACRONYSSIDAE) ATTACKING FOWL IN PUERTO RICO

Host and distribution records of dermanyssid and macronyssid mites are reported for the first time. New records for Florida are presented for Dermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer), Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese), O. bacoti (Hirst), O. sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), and Pellonyssus passeri (Clark and Yunker). Dermanyssus is probably an uncommon genus in Florida. Ornithonyssus bursa and O. bacoti were the 2 macronyssids reported to attack humans in Florida. The most commonly encountered ectoparasitic mite of the domestic chicken, Gallus gallus, was O. sylviarum. Pellonyssus passeri was collected in large numbers particularly in the nests of the house sparrow Passer domesticus and mockingbird, Mimus polyglottis.
