This article discusses the experiences of one boreal silviculturist, Neil Stocker, while he served in Afghanistan as a member of Canada's military and his view that forests and forestry could help solve many of the problems people are facing there. The author describes how Stocker noticed that many people are involved in growing drugs such as marijuana. He proposes that if forests were to be planted instead, it would benefit the local economy, revitalize the landscape, help filter the water supply and control carbon byproduct. The author reports that Stocker presented his views at the Annual General Meeting for the Algonquin Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF/IFC) on November 8, 2007.
