The genetic improvement of economically important production traits of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), for geographic regions where production is threatened by drought and high temperature stress, is challenging because of the complex genetic nature of these traits. Large scale SNP data sets for the two major gene pools of bean, Andean and Middle American, were developed by mapping multiple pools of genotype-bysequencing reads and identifying over 200k SNPs for each gene pool against the most recent assembly of the P. vulgaris genome sequence. Moderately sized Bean Abiotic Stress Evaluation (BASE) panels, consisting of genotypes appropriate for production in Central America and Africa, were assembled. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated the BASE populations represented broad genetic diversity for the appropriate races within the two gene pools. Joint mixed linear model genome-wide association studies with data from multiple locations discovered genetic factors associated with four production traits in both heat and drought stress environments using the BASE panels. Pleiotropic genetic factors were discovered using a multi-trait mixed model analysis. SNPs within or near candidate genes associated with hormone signaling, epigenetic regulation, and ROS detoxification under stress conditions were identified and can be used as genetic markers in dry bean breeding programs. Drought-like humanitarian crises in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) are increasing despite recent progress in drought monitoring and prediction efforts. Notwithstanding these efforts, there remain challenges stemming from uncertainty in drought prediction, and the inflexibility and limited buffering capacity of the recurrent impacted systems. The complexity of the interactions of ENSO, IOD, IPO and NAO, arguably remains the main source of uncertainty in drought prediction. To develop practical drought risk parameters that potentially can guide investment strategies and risk-informed planning, this study quantifies, drought characteristics that underpin drought impacts management. Drought characteristics that include probability of drought-year occurrences, durations, areal-extent and their trends over 11 decades (1903–2012) were derived from the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI).Transient probability of drought-year occurrences, modelled on Beta distribution, across the region ranges from 10 to 40%, although most fall within 20–30%. For more than half of the drought events, durations of up to 4, 7, 14 and 24 months for the 3-, 6-, 12- and 24-month timescales were evident, while 1 out of 10 events persisted for up to 18 months for the short timescales, and up to 36 months or more for the long timescales. Apparently, only drought areal-extent showed statistically significant trends of up to 3%, 1%, 3.7%, 2.4%, 0.7%, − 0.3% and − 0.6% per decade over Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, respectively. Since there is no evidence of significant changes in drought characteristics, the peculiarity of drought-like crises in the GHA can be attributed (at least in part) to unaccounted for systematic rainfall reduction. This highlights the importance of distinguishing drought impacts from those associated with new levels of aridity. With increased drought events affecting forests globally, little is known about their future impact on Africa’s forests. In particular, we need to gain a better understanding of how key African forest species will respond to drought stress. In this study, we investigated functional traits and physiological responses to drought of the light-demanding pioneer species Maesopsis eminii Engl. The study involved an experiment on potted M. eminii seedlings with three different drought treatments in which sap flow (SF), stem diameter variation (SDV) and stomatal conductance (g s ) were measured. Whereas low g s rates (39 ± 30 mmol m −2 s −1 ) and pronounced SF-VPD (vapour pressure deficit) and g s -VPD hysteresis loops during well-watered conditions indicated conservative stomatal control on water loss, nocturnal sap flow implied M. eminii is not able to completely block transpiration. At the onset of drought, the pioneer seedlings retained high stem diameter growth despite highly reduced soil moisture (>−0.95 ± 0.03 MPa) and SF rates, indicating that growth was prioritised. Contribution of stored stem water to daily water use was limited both during drought and control conditions, which was confirmed by the absence of time lags between photosynthetic active radiation (PAR)-SDV, PAR-SF and SDV-SF in all treatments. Below a soil water potential of −0.95 ± 0.03 MPa, leaves were gradually shed, but diurnal and nocturnal SF did not turn zero, and absolute stem diameter kept decreasing for the entire experimental period (115 days), portraying that M. eminii seedlings can survive only limited drought periods. In sum, this study demonstrated that species-specific traits, as opposed to species ecological strategy, govern drought performance. East Africa experienced in the 2001-11 time period some of the worst drought events to date, culminating in the high-impact drought of 2010/11. Long-term monitoring of precipitation is thus essential, and satellite-based precipitation products can help in coping with the relatively sparse rain gauge ground networks of this area of the world. However, the complex topography and the marked geographic variability of precipitation in the region make precipitation retrieval from satellites problematic and product validation and intercomparison necessary. Six state-of-the-art monthly satellite precipitation products over East Africa during the 2001-09 time frame are evaluated. Eight areas (clusters) are identified by investigating the precipitation seasonality through the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) climatological gauge data. Seasonality was fully reproduced by satellite data in each of the GPCC-identified clusters. Not surprisingly, complex terrain (mountain regions in particular) represents a challenge for satellite precipitation estimates, as demonstrated by the standard deviations of the six-product ensemble. A further confirmation comes from the comparison between satellite estimates and rain gauge measurements as a function of terrain elevation. The 3B42 product performs best, although the satellite-gauge comparative analysis was not completely independent since a few of the products include a rain gauge bias correction. Vocal actors within policy and practice contend that environmental variability and shocks, such as drought and prolonged heat waves, drive civil wars in Africa. Recently, a widely publicized scientific article appears to substantiate this'claim. This paper investigates the empirical foundation for the claimed relationship in detail. Using a host of different model specifications and alternative measures of drought, heat, and civil war, the paper concludes that climate variability is a poor predictor of armed conflict. Instead, African civil wars can be explained by generic structural and contextual conditions: prevalent ethno-political exclusion, poor national economy, and the collapse of the Cold War system. Human activity is supposed to affect the earth’s climate mainly via two processes: the emission of greenhouse gases and aerosols and the alteration of land cover. While the former process is well established in state-of-the-art climate model simulations, less attention has been paid to the latter. However, the low latitudes appear to be particularly sensitive to land use changes, especially in tropical Africa where frequent drought episodes were observed during recent decades. Here several ensembles of long-term transient climate change experiments are presented with a regional climate model to estimate the future pathway of African climate under fairly realistic forcing conditions. Therefore, the simulations are forced with increasing greenhouse gas concentrations as well as land use changes until 2050. Three different scenarios are prescribed in order to assess the range of options inferred from global political, social, and economical development. The authors find a prominent surface heating and a weakening of the hydrological cycle over most of tropical Africa, resulting in enhanced heat stress and extended dry spells. In contrast, the large-scale atmospheric circulation in upper levels is less affected, pointing to a primarily local effect of land degradation on near-surface climate. In the model study, it turns out that land use changes are primarily responsible for the simulated climate response. In general, simulated climate changes are not concealed by internal variability. The article focuses on research by researcher L. Zhou and colleagues on the impact of seasonal drought in the tropical forests of Congo Basin in Africa on its vegetation greenness as of May 2014. Topics discussed include analysis of remote-sensing data of the region revealed reduced vegetation greenness and decreased water storage, data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission revealed a decline in precipitation since 1985, and increases in land-surface temperature in the region.
