This paper addresses bioethics in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. The Introduction (Section 1) highlights that at the field's inception, infectiousness was not front and center. Instead, infectious disease was widely perceived as having been conquered. This made it possible for bioethicists to center values such as individual autonomy, informed consent, and a statist conception of justice. Section 2 urges shifting to values more fitting for the moment the world is in. To find these, it directs attention to the Global South, and in particular, Africa, and to the values of ubuntu, solidarity, dignity, kinship, and humility. The paper concludes (in Section 3) that 21st‐century challenges facing bioethics are increasingly global, and calls on bioethicists themselves to be more globally inclusive in their approaches. This article identifies some of the key challenges hindering effective social work education and practice in African nations. These problems include an orientation that is remedial or curative, involvement of non-social work graduates in social work posts, lack of a regulating or coordinating body, and an overall dependency on extrapolated curricula and Western methods among others. Most African nations although with huge wealth are wallowing in abject poverty resulting in various social maladies such as kidnapping, child abuse, substance misuse, corruption, lack of organised social welfare institutions, unsustainable development, human trafficking, unemployment, lack of leadership and social injustice, as resultant effects of exploitative colonialists and/or imperialists. These call for holistic practice interventions to solve these social ills. This paper strongly advocates that social work in the African continent should be given legal backing to ensure professional social work education and practice. The social work education curriculum should be developed to reflect African social contexts and its approaches to social work practice and not just be restricted to Western approaches alone. On this premise, this paper proposes 'cultural humility' and 'transaction between individuals and environment (TIE)' frameworks that would enhance social work education and practice in Africa. The article analyzes the decline of French influence in Africa and the growing role of Russia in the region. It highlights the contradiction of France supporting authoritarian regimes in some countries while criticizing others, which generates discomfort and accusations of hypocrisy. Additionally, it mentions the accusation of arrogance against the French and their attitude towards African migrants. On the other hand, it points out that Russia is taking advantage of the credibility deficit of the West and is strengthening its presence in Africa through diplomatic activities and arms sales. The article discusses the way English naturalist Charles Darwin changed the understanding of the people about themselves. It notes that through the works of Darwin, people could now see as far as they can and will see further future. It states that people already have their ancestry leading back to Africa, which is not only an important inference of Darwin's legacy to humankind. It further stresses that it is a responsible declaration of honesty, equality and humility.

This article investigates the depiction of Nelson Mandela's personality traits in selected isiXhosa poetry. The aspects of Mandela's personality that feature prominently include his bravery, determination, humility, goodness, peace, and tactical skills. The theoretical framework that underpins this study will be discussed briefly after the introductory section. A short note on Mandela will be provided before a discussion is presented of the concept of personality in general and of Mandela's personality traits in particular. The poetry works that are considered in this discussion include those by Sitole, Mkiva and Mtuze in Mtuze and Kaschula (1993); Satyo (1998); Ndlazulwana in Gebeda (1994); Shasha (1994); Nyamende in Nyamende, Dladloti, Hoho, Magibisela and Nkanunu (1995); Xozwa in Luwaca and Qamata (1995); Mbovane (2003), and Madlebe and Moto in Moropa (2005). Apart from a discussion of the personality traits of Nelson Mandela, the importance of the linguistic elements used in the depiction of these traits, will also be pointed out.
