In "The Thracian Wonder," a pastoral romance by William Rowley, young Eusanius is separated from his mother and comes to live at the court of Alcade, King of Africa. There, he falls in love with Alcade's daughter, who bears the peculiar name of Lillia Guida. The play's most recent editor suggests that the character's first name derives from the Latin for lily (lilium) because Lillia Guida is represented as white skinned and her second name from the Italian for 'guide,' to signify her influence on Eusanius. However, a likelier source for the name is George Wilkins's short pamphlet "The Three Miseries of Barbary."
