The article discusses a progamme of scanning workshops held in French-speaking African countries to digitise documents of participating institutions, established by the Research Institute for Development (IRD) in Bondy, France, through the System for Scientific and Technical Information (SIST) project of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MAEE). It also comments on the installation of the Bibliothèques électroniques en partenariat (BEEP) Internet server by the IRD to facilitate African institutions' sharing of scientific information. Topics include metadata, value-added services, and the use of Greenstone software.
