Inland capture fisheries play a critical role in supporting food security and livelihoods in Africa. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the genetic health of exploited fish populations. The African bonytongue, Heterotis niloticus, supports important commercial and subsistence fisheries in western Africa. However, sharp declines in stocks have been reported. Herein, we estimate contemporary effective population sizes (Ne) of four Heterotis populations in Nigeria, three in Benin, and five in Cameroon using Linkage Disequilibrium methods. Ne estimates were used to assess genetic short-term (i.e., inbreeding depression) and long-term (i.e., loss of evolutionary potential) risks. Ne point estimates obtained with the best estimator (out of 16), as determined by computer simulations, were <50 (range = 5.1–36.2) for nine of the twelve populations examined, which is below the minimum recommended for avoiding the potential deleterious effects of inbreeding depression (original criterion Ne ≥ 50, revised to Ne ≥ 100); and well below the minimum recommended for populations to retain evolutionary potential (original criterion Ne ≥ 500; revised to Ne ≥ 1000). The lower bound of the confidence interval for two of the remaining populations was below the minimum recommended to retain evolutionary potential (with the point estimate of one of them also below this threshold), and for some methods, values were lower than the minimum recommended to avoid inbreeding depression. Accordingly, our results suggest that urgent conservation and management plans are needed to guarantee the persistence and sustainability of the H. niloticus populations examined. Globally, the number of rivers with intermittent flow is increasing due to climate change and water abstraction for human consumption. Currently, our understanding of how hydrology in subtropical rivers with intermittent flow affects the structure and dynamics of aquatic communities is poorly understood. Here, we investigated how fish α‐ and β‐diversity patterns in intermittent channels in the lower reaches of the Okavango Delta respond to seasonal flooding and drought. Under low‐flow conditions, ephemeral habitat had higher α‐diversity, and this was influenced by a combination of fish aggregation and apparent transient legacy effects as habitat patches became smaller and more isolated. Investigation of changes in fish assemblage structure across different hydrological periods and habitat types showed significant species turnover when water levels fell, suggesting a strong influence from species sorting. During high‐water periods, species assemblages were homogenized both at local and regional scales, suggesting a greater influence of mass effects. Our findings support hydrology as a major factor regulating diversity patterns in intermittent rivers of a major wetland in a semiarid region of subtropical Africa. We infer from these findings that maintenance of a relatively natural flow regime will be necessary for conserving aquatic ecosystem structure and function in this system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Oueme River, a lowland river in Benin, Africa, artificial ponds constructed in the floodplain (whedos) are colonised during the high-water period by a presumably random sample of fishes from the river channel. As water slowly recedes from the floodplain, fishes are isolated in whedos until they are harvested near the end of the dry season. We surveyed fishes in whedos and adjacent main-channel and floodplain habitats during two low-water periods (2008 and 2009) and one falling-water period (2010-2011) to evaluate the relevance of four alternative metacommunity models to these systems. In 2010-2011, we also measured a suite of physicochemical variables including dissolved oxygen, temperature, specific conductivity and per cent cover of aquatic vegetation. Whedos were covered with dense growth of aquatic vegetation, and dissolved oxygen concentrations were lower in whedos and a natural floodplain depression compared with the main channel. Multivariate analyses revealed that habitat types were distinct with regard to assemblage structure and abiotic conditions. Assemblages in whedos and natural floodplain depressions were differentiated from those of the river channel, with the floodplain habitats being dominated by piscivorous fishes that tolerate aquatic hypoxia. Dispersal, aquatic hypoxia and predation act in concert to shape local community structure. Patch dynamics, species sorting and mass effect models all were consistent with patterns in fish assemblage structure in this system. We conclude that the underlying mechanisms of drift, speciation, selection and dispersal ultimately may be more useful for explaining patterns in ecological communities than alternative metacommunity models.
