Cyclic climatic and glacial fluctuations of the Late Quaternary produced a dynamic biogeographic history for high latitudes. To refine our understanding of this history in northwestern North America, we explored geographic structure in a wide-ranging carnivore, the wolverine (Gulo gulo). We examined genetic variation in populations across mainland Alaska, coastal Southeast Alaska, and mainland western Canada using nuclear microsatellite genotypes and sequence data from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and Cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. Data from maternally inherited mtDNA reflect stable populations in Northwest Alaska, suggesting the region harbored wolverine populations since at least the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21 Kya), consistent with their persistence in the fossil record of Beringia. Populations in Southeast Alaska are characterized by minimal divergence, with no genetic signature of long-term refugial persistence (consistent with the lack of pre-Holocene fossil records there). The Kenai Peninsula population exhibits mixed signatures depending on marker type: mtDNA data indicate stability (i.e. historical persistence) and include a private haplotype, whereas biparentally inherited microsatellites exhibit relatively low variation and a lack of private alleles consistent with a more recent Holocene colonization of the peninsula. Our genetic work is largely consistent with the early 20th century taxonomic hypothesis that wolverines on the Kenai Peninsula belong to a distinct subspecies. Our finding of significant genetic differentiation of wolverines inhabiting the Kenai Peninsula, coupled with the peninsula's burgeoning human population and the wolverine's known sensitivity to anthropogenic impacts, provides valuable foundational data that can be used to inform conservation and management prescriptions for wolverines inhabiting these landscapes. Monitoring trends in the abundance of furbearers may be challenging, particularly at the spatio-temporal scales relevant for management. As such, wildlife managers often rely on harvest records to identify broad-scale harvest patterns and trends. Yet, the reliability of harvest records is often unknown. Analyses of harvest records to determine quotas and assess sustainability need to account for error rates when they are > 0. We evaluated the accuracy of trapper-reported sex of lynx (Lynx canadensis; n = 185) and wolverine (Gulo gulo; n = 467)—two meso-carnivores commonly targeted by fur trappers in northwestern Canada and Alaska—by comparing that to sex determined via necropsies of the same carcasses. Overall error rates differed significantly between wolverine (5%) and lynx (13%). Error rates were sex-biased for wolverine, but not lynx. Body size did not affect error rates for either species. Our data demonstrated species- and sex-specific error rates in the sex reported in harvest records. Error rates for wolverine (5%) were likely trivial for determining harvest sustainability because sex-based bias was small, given that overall accuracy was high. While error rates were greater for lynx (13%), there was no sex-based bias in trapper-reported sex. Because accuracy was lower for lynx, managers should exercise caution when using trapper-reported sex to conduct population analyses or assess harvest sustainability. Managers should be particularly interested in error rates of harvested species that exhibit relatively little sexual size dimorphism and lack obvious genitalia, similar to lynx. We recommend assessing error in trapper-reported sex prior to analysis of harvest records, as well as ongoing education with trappers to increase their ability to reliably determine the sex of animals they harvest. Recently, a new generation of global positioning system (GPS) collars has become available that provides limited daily location fixes, a relatively long battery life, and are low‐cost, compared to full‐featured GPS collars. However, their performance is untested, and assessing these biases is needed to inform study designs and data analysis protocols. We used stationary tests of 15 Lotek LifeCycle GPS collars – an example of low‐feature GPS collars – to measure the accuracy of location fixes. In addition, we deployed Lotek Lifecycle GPS collars on 153 caribou Rangifer tarandus and 24 bison Bison bison in Yukon and Alaska, to assess their field performance. We examined differences among species, sex, location fix schedule, and latitude, on four performance metrics (FSR, 3D‐V FSR, DOP and DSR). Stationary trials indicated that mean precision (4.3 ± 4.0 m [SD]) and accuracy (6.0 ± 4.7 m) of location fixes was excellent, and FSR was good (87.2%), albeit both were slightly affected by forest canopy cover. Field performance varied by species and sex. Notably, the mean DSR for male bison was dismal (27.4 ± 24.2%) likely because of their behaviour, and the mean FSR, 3DV‐FSR and DOP, for male caribou was poor (FSR = 57.3 ± 2.0%), compared to collars deployed on female caribou (72.2 ± 1.7%) or female bison (77.9 ± 1.4%). We also observed that the VHF transmitters often failed when the collar malfunctioned. Biases in the accuracy and performance of these low‐cost GPS collars should be taken into account when designing studies. Researchers contemplating investing in low‐feature GPS collars require information on their 'real‐world' performance so that they can decide whether they are appropriate for their intended application. Diurnal roost sites are a critical resource for bats. Despite their importance, we know little about the roosting habits of Little Brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus) in the boreal forest of northwestern Canada and Alaska. To locate diurnal roost sites and determine minimum distances to foraging areas, we radio-tagged 10 Little Brown Myotis (7 adult females, 3 adult males) in the boreal forest of southwestern Yukon, Canada. All of the females roosted in a single building, with 1 using a bat house for 2 nights. In contrast, the males used a variety of roost sites, including buildings, rock cliffs, and trees, and switched roosts periodically. We observed sex-biased movements, with adult males traveling a significantly shorter distance between their diurnal roost sites and a key foraging area than adult females. Males tended to roost near a key foraging area, whereas radio-tagged females flew >5 km from their diurnal roosts to forage. Our data are some of the first obtained via radio-telemetry for Little Brown Myotis in the boreal forest and confirm that the roosting behavior of the sexes is different. That all of the radio-tagged females primarily used 1 roost site in town and flew relatively far to a key foraging area suggests that these critical resources may be somewhat limiting in our study area. Understanding parasite diversity and distribution is essential in managing the potential impact of parasitic diseases in animals and people. Imperfect diagnostic methods, however, may conceal cryptic species. Here, we report the discovery and phylogeography of a previously unrecognized species of Trichinella in wolverine (Gulo gulo) from northwestern Canada that was indistinguishable from T. nativa using the standard multiplex PCR assay based on the expansion segment 5 (ESV) of ribosomal DNA. The novel genotype, designated as T13, was discovered when sequencing the mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial genome and of 15 concatenated single copy orthologs of nuclear DNA indicated a common ancestor for the encapsulated clade is shared by a subclade containing Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella nelsoni, and a subclade containing T13 and remaining taxa: T12 + (T2 + T6) + [(T5 + T9) + (T3 + T8)]. Of 95 individual hosts from 12 species of mammalian carnivores from northwestern Canada from which larvae were identified as T. nativa on multiplex PCR, only wolverines were infected with T13 (14 of 42 individuals). These infections were single or mixed with T. nativa and/or T6. Visual examination and motility testing confirmed that T13 is encapsulated and likely freeze-tolerant. We developed a new Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism which unequivocally distinguishes between T13 and T. nativa. We propose Trichinella chanchalensis n. sp. for T13, based on significant genetic divergence from other species of Trichinella and broad-based sampling of the Trichinella genome. Exploration of Alaskan and Siberian isolates may contribute to further resolution of a phylogeographically complex history for species of Trichinella across Beringia, including Trichinella chanchalensis n. sp.
