This study was conducted to determine the optimum test duration and the effect of missing data on accuracy of measuring feed efficiency and its 4 related traits ADG, DMI, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake in beef cattle using data from 456 steers with 5,397 weekly averaged feed intakes and BW repeated measurements taken over 91 d. Data were collected using the GrowSafe System at the University of Alberta Kinsella Research Station. The changes and relative changes in phenotypic residual variances and correlations (Pearson and Spearman) among data from shortened test durations (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, or 84 d) and a 91-d test were used to determine the optimum test duration for the 4 traits. The traits were fitted to a mixed model with repeated measures using SAS. Test durations for ADG, DMI, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake could be shortened to 63, 35, 42, and 63 d, respectively, without significantly reducing the accuracy of the tests when BW was measured weekly. The accuracy of the test was not compromised when up to 30% of the records were randomly removed after the first 35 d on test. The Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) study is an ongoing prospective cohort study that recruits pregnant women early in pregnancy and, as of 2012, is following up their infants to 3 years of age. It has currently enrolled approximately 5000 Canadians (2000 pregnant women, their offspring and many of their partners). The primary aims of the APrON study were to determine the relationships between maternal nutrient intake and status, before, during and after gestation, and (1) maternal mood; (2) birth and obstetric outcomes; and (3) infant neurodevelopment. We have collected comprehensive maternal nutrition, anthropometric, biological and mental health data at multiple points in the pregnancy and the post-partum period, as well as obstetrical, birth, health and neurodevelopmental outcomes of these pregnancies. The study continues to follow the infants through to 36 months of age. The current report describes the study design and methods, and findings of some pilot work. All dairy producers in the Canadian province of Alberta were mailed a questionnaire to determine current management practices and production. This survey was undertaken to develop and to plan extension programs based on current dairy producer needs. Of the producers contacted, 802 (57%) responded to the survey questionnaire. The results indicated that the mean herd size was 67 cows, and mean daily milk production was 21.9 kg/d per cow. More than 60% of the producers reported that the majority of their calf losses occurred at birth, and another 15.6% stated that losses occurred within the 1st wk. Less than one-third of the cooperators individually penned calves to prevent contact among calves prior to weaning. Approximately 31% of the cows in the herds surveyed required two or more breedings, partially because of inadequate estrus detection; only 50.3% of the respondents had daily scheduled detection times. The most frequent health concerns perceived by the producers were mastitis, foot problems, and silent estrus. Educational and extension programs should focus on specific areas, such as newborn calf management and reproductive management, to improve the efficiency and profitability of dairy production in Alberta.

The distribution of Thelazia skrjabini in the eyes of cattle was examined from necropsies on 297 animals. Although the overall prevalence in beef cattle (21.5%) was similar to that in dairy cattle (25.7%), in general worms were more abundant in beef than in dairy animals. The worm prevalence was lowest in the months from March to June and highest in September among beef and dairy animals. Thelazia skrjabini was found in 76 (16.8%) eyes from beef, and 23 (16.4%) eyes from dairy cattle. Infections were not randomly distributed among the eyes of cattle. Significantly more dairy and beef cattle contained T. skrjabini in both eyes than expected based on the observed prevalences. Based on chi-square probabilities, significantly more cattle more than 2 yr of age and less than 10 mo of age were infected with T. skrjabini. Although all age groups were infected, more worms were observed in cattle more than 2 yr of age. More female worms than males were collected from cattle. The male-to-female ratio of 1:2 was consistent regardless of cattle age, season, or type.
