Abstract: Experimental test sites are important to understand the physical flow processes occurring within an avalanche. They can be at different scale: laboratory or real scale. In Europe, a dozen of real-scale test sites have been realized, though at present only a few of them are still operative. The primary goal is to measure avalanche dynamical variables under controlled conditions. Not all the observed phenomena have been fully understood yet and more work is needed especially regarding small to medium avalanches. The aim of this paper is to present a new experimental test site at a real scale in order to study specific topics: the dynamics of small and medium avalanches, the avalanche release processes and the interaction between avalanche flows and obstacles. The test site, called Seehore, is located in Aosta Valley in the North-western Italian Alps. The slope, with an elevation difference of about 300m (from 2300 to 2570m asl), has a mean slope angle of about 28°. Avalanches are artificially released on a routine basis to secure the ski-runs, as the site is located within a ski resort (Monterosa Ski); they are usually dense slab avalanches of small or medium size, but also a powder cloud may occasionally form. The site is instrumented with a steel obstacle, described in details in a companion paper, which measures the effects of avalanches impacting on it. Before, during and after each artificial release physical properties of the snow in the avalanche release, track and deposition zones are recorded; front velocity, erosion and deposition mass are estimated by field surveys or by videogrammetry and terrestrial laser-scan measurements. This article describes an experience of geographic filmmaking carried out within a long-term research process (2000–2012) involving the terraced landscape of the Brenta Valley in the Italian Alps. The documentaryPiccola terra [Small land](2012) was co-produced by geographers and professional directors. Engaging in the recent debate on filmic geographies, the aim of this article is to discuss and show what makes a film ‘geographic’. The geographer authored a filmic interpretation of landscape which is spatially and temporally complex, open and mobile, anchored to material features and to personal stories and socio-economic contexts. Produced to support a campaign for the adoption of abandoned terraces by ‘new farmers’, the documentaryPiccola terraserves as a means to engage society and produce landscape change. Geographic filmmaking as an action-, public- and social-oriented activity is discussed with reference to the so-called ‘impact agenda’. We propose a style of active engagement through filmmaking which is workable, rather than critical. In order to avoid purely auto-reflective, auto-referential academic speculation on doing filmic and public geographies, this paper, which ideally is read along with viewing of the documentary, materially enters the researched/filmed landscape, developing into a supplementary tool for the international dissemination ofPiccola terra. In this paper, we present a study on the efficiency of multi-return LIDAR (Light Detection Ranging) data in the estimation of forest stem volume over a multi-layered forest area in the Italian Alps. The goals of this paper are (1) to verify the usefulness of multi-return LIDAR data compared to single-return data in forest volume estimation and (2) to define the optimal resolution of a stem volume distribution raster map over the investigated area. To achieve these goals, raw data were segmented into a net, and different cell dimensions were investigated to maximize the relationship between the LIDAR data and the ground-truth information. Twenty predicting variables (e.g., mean height, coefficient of variation) have been extracted from multi-return LIDAR data, and a multiple linear regression analysis has been used for predicting tree stem volume. Experimental results found that the optimal resolutions of the net square cells were 40 m. The analysis indicated that in a mixed multi-layered forest, characterized by a complex vertical structure, the correct selection of the map spatial resolution and the inclusion of the secondary-return data were important factors for improving the effectiveness of the laser scanning approach in forest inventories. The experimental tests showed that the chosen model is effective for the estimation of stem volume over the analyzed area, providing good results on all the three considered validation methods. This paper investigates the use of the Flash Flood Guidance FFG method and a method of modelbased threshold runoff computation to improve the accuracy of flash flood forecasts at ungauged locations. The methodology proposed in this paper requires running a lumped hydrological model to derive flood frequencies at the outlet of the ungauged basin under consideration, and then to derive the threshold runoff from these modelbased discharges. The study examines the potential of this method to account for the hydrological models uncertainty and for biases originated by lack of model calibration, which is the typical condition in ungauged basins.Experiments to validate this approach involve the implementation of a semidistributed continuous rainfallrunoff model and the operation of the FFG method over four basins located in the centraleastern Italian Alps and ranging in size from 75.2 to 213.7 km2. The model is calibrated on two larger basins and the model parameters are transposed to the other two basins to simulate operations in ungauged basins. The FFG method is applied by using the 2 year discharge as the threshold runoff. The threshold runoff is derived both by using local discharge statistics and the modelbased approach advocated here. Examination of the results obtained by this comparison shows that the use of modelbased threshold leads to improvements in both gauged and ungauged situations. Overall, the Critical Success Index CSI increases by 12 for gauged basins and by 31 for ungauged basins by using the modelbased threshold with respect to use of local data. As expected, the increase of CSI is more remarkable for ungauged basins, due to lack of local model calibration and the greater likelihood of occurrence of a simulation bias in model application over these basins. This shows that the method of threshold runoff computation provides an inherent bias correction to reduce systematic errors in model applications to ungauged and gauged basins. During the last millennia, all forests of the Italian Alps have been heavily affected by human land-use. Consequently, forest structures have been modified, and there are no old growth remains. In the last decades, however, many forests have been withdrawn from regular management, because wood production was unprofitable, and left to develop naturally. At the same time, in currently managed forests, silvicultural systems able to develop or maintain old-growth characteristics are being required. The aim of this paper was to assess the status and developmental dynamics of old-growth characteristics in mixed beech, silver fir, and Norway spruce montane forests of the eastern Italian Alps. We selected along a naturalness gradient (a) three old-growth forests in Bosnia and Montenegro (due to the lack of old-growth forests in the Italian Alps), (b) two forests withdrawn from regular management for at least 50 years, and (c) three currently managed forests. In each forest, we analysed 17 structural attributes, in order to assess their value as indicators of old-growth condition. Old-growth forests were characterized by significantly higher amounts of live and dead biomass, share of beech in the dominant and regeneration layers, and number of large trees. The diameter distribution was best described as a rotated sigmoid, differently from currently and formerly managed forest. We discuss the differences in old-growth characteristics across the management gradient and use our results to evaluate the effectiveness of retention prescriptions currently applied in the studied regions in maintaining or promoting old-growth structural attributes in managed forests. A case study of a debris slide (estimated volume of about 35,000 m) is described in this paper. This slide occurred in April 2009 in the North Western Italian Alps (Aosta valley) and damaged the SR25 road along the Valgrisenche valley. Ground investigations started with severe safety and logistic issues being posed. Given the need to open as soon as possible the road, the design of the landslide stabilization works was carried out using a 'design as you go' approach. The stabilization measures were conceived to be flexible in order to allow for changes and integration during construction, in line with the progressive refinement of the geological-geotechnical slope model being developed. Back analysis by means of the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and the finite element method (FEM) was used. Groundwater level rise following heavy rainfall and spring snow melting was found to be the main cause of the debris slide. The stabilization works were designed by using both the LEM and FEM methods. The stability conditions of the engineered slope were assessed based on the available performance monitoring data. Abstract: In Italy, railways crossing the alpine valleys are a vital means of civil and commercial communications with the rest of Europe. The geomorphologic configuration and the climatic conditions, especially in winter and spring, can cause rock fall events resulting in railway service interruptions and damage to infrastructure and, in the worst case, to people. There were rock fall events at a slope adjacent to the Domodossola–Iselle railway, most recently in 2004. This paper evaluates the stability of a mountain slope and maps rock fall hazards through the modeling of potential runout trajectories. Traditional geological, geomorphological and geo-engineering surveys were combined with data derived from digital terrestrial photogrammetry. Stereo photographic pairs of rocky outcrops in inaccessible areas were acquired from a helicopter. Data from photogrammetry, topographic measurements and laser scanning were then integrated to build a digital model of the slope, to characterize the rock mass and block geometry, and to define possible runout trajectories. The geomatic methods used have yielded oriented stereo-images, orthophotos and precise digital models of rocky wedges. Geometrical and structural characteristics of slopes, such as joint attitude, spacing and persistence, and block volumes, were also derived. The results were used together with a deterministic limit equilibrium method to evaluate slope stability. We assessed the probabilistic distribution of rock fall end points and kinetic energy along the rock falling paths and existing barriers, and created a hazard map based on the spatial distribution of trajectories, rock fall transit density and kinetic energy. Abstract: Glaciers are among the best terrestrial indicators of climate change and thus glacier inventories have attracted a growing, worldwide interest in recent years. In Italy, the first official glacier inventory was completed in 1925 and 774 glacial bodies were identified. As the amount of data continues to increase, and new techniques become available, there is a growing demand for computer tools that can efficiently manage the collected data. The Research Institute for Geo-hydrological Protection of the National Research Council, in cooperation with the Departments of Computer Science and Earth Sciences of the University of Turin, created a database that provides a modern tool for storing, processing and sharing glaciological data. The database was developed according to the need of storing heterogeneous information, which can be retrieved through a set of web search queries. The database''s architecture is server-side, and was designed by means of an open source software. The website interface, simple and intuitive, was intended to meet the needs of a distributed public: through this interface, any type of glaciological data can be managed, specific queries can be performed, and the results can be exported in a standard format. The use of a relational database to store and organize a large variety of information about Italian glaciers collected over the last hundred years constitutes a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and accessibility of such data. Moreover, the same benefits also apply to the enhanced operability for handling information in the future, including new and emerging types of data formats, such as geographic and multimedia files. Future developments include the integration of cartographic data, such as base maps, satellite images and vector data. The relational database described in this paper will be the heart of a new geographic system that will merge data, data attributes and maps, leading to a complete description of Italian glacial environments. Abstract: In this paper we show the seismicity and velocity structure of a segment of the Alpine retro-belt front along the continental collision margin of the Venetian Alps (NE Italy). Our goal is to gain insight on the buried structures and deep fault geometry in a “silent” area, i.e., an area with poor instrumental seismicity but high potential for future earthquakes, as indicated by historical earthquakes (1695 Me=6.7 Asolo and 1936 Ms=5.8 Bosco del Cansiglio). Local earthquakes recorded by a dense temporary seismic network are used to compute 3-D Vp and Vp/Vs tomographic images, yielding well resolved images of the upper crust underneath the south-Alpine front. We show the presence of two main distinct high Vp S-verging thrust units, the innermost coincides with the piedmont hill and the outermost is buried under a thick pile of sediments in the Po plain. Background seismicity and Vp/Vs anomalies, interpreted as cracked fluid-filled volumes, suggest that the NE portion of the outermost blind thrust and its oblique/lateral ramps may be a zone of high fluid pressure prone to future earthquakes. Three-dimensional focal mechanisms show compressive and transpressive solutions, in agreement with the tectonic setting, stress field maps and geodetic observations. The bulk of the microseismicity is clustered in two different areas, both in correspondence of inherited lateral ramps of the thrust system. Tomographic images highlight the influence of the paleogeographic setting in the tectonic style and seismic activity of the region. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of mountain river crossing in old towns whose urban morphology often prevents one from building a ramp to access the bridge. If this is the case, the proposed solution consists in designing a bridge which can be lifted when a flood occurs. Some bridges of this kind are actually on duty in the Italian Alps but all of them are moved by means of hydraulic jacks. A table bridge moved by the buoyancy force of the river water is suggested. The design concept is here specified for a real case where a floating bridge is placed in the position where a bridge moved by hydraulic jacks was built. This choice enables one to compare the two solutions under the same conditions. The simplicity and robustness of the design, as well as the possibility of fully automatic functioning without any external support (i.e. electric energy) lead the authors to state that the floating bridge suggested is preferable to a bridge lifted by means of hydraulic jacks. Abstract: For the generation of susceptibility maps on medium scales (1:25,000 to 1:50,000) using statistical techniques, a reliable landslide inventory is needed, together with factor maps used as inputs. This paper compares landslide susceptibility maps obtained with the same methodology but using different landslide inventories: the official Italian landslide inventory GeoIFFI for the Lombardy Region and a recently mapped inventory (DF2001). The analysis included four main steps: (i) preparation of debris flow inventories using both random and spatial partitions and factor maps as explanatory variables; (ii) calculation of accountability and reliability indices for a preliminary susceptibility analysis and selection of an appropriate combination of the factor maps for detailed analysis; (iii) evaluation and validation of the obtained susceptibility maps; and (iv) comparison of the results and selection of the final map. The study area is located in the Valtellina Valley in the Central Italian Alps. The analysis identified highly susceptible areas of shallow landslides that may generate debris flows. It was demonstrated that more precisely delimited source areas for landslide-induced debris flows produce better susceptibility maps. However, the improvement of these maps was relatively limited when the inventories were randomly subdivided. Higher improvements were observed after the subdivision of the inventories into three geographical parts with different geomorphological characteristics. Although the modelling showed very similar results if evaluation is made using standard techniques, the spatial pattern of the susceptibility maps was highly variable and dependent on the combination of the factor maps used. In areas with complex three-dimensional features, slope and aspect interact with light conditions and significantly affect the spatial structure of images acquired by remote sensing instruments (for example, by changing the distribution of shadows and affecting the texture of high resolution imagery). In this scenario, this paper analyses the potential and the effectiveness of an automatic classification system to identify three fundamental vegetation classes (forest, grassland and crops) in the complex topography of the Italian Alps (Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy). This classification system is based on the fusion of spectral information provided by the SPOT-5 multi-spectral channels (Ground Instantaneous Field of View, GIFOV, equal to 10 m) and textural information extracted from airborne digital orthophotos (GIFOV equal to 1 m) and is designed to be user-friendly. The texture of the digital orthophotos was modelled using defined bidirectional variograms, thereby extracting additional information unavailable in first-order texture analyses. Using SPOT-5 multi-spectral information alone, the classification accuracy in the investigated alpine area was equal to 87.5%, but increased to 92.1% when texture information was included. In particular, the texture information significantly increased the classification accuracy for crops (from 68.9% to 87.9%), especially orchards that tend to be classified as lowland deciduous forests, and herbaceous crops (such as maize) that are often misclassified as grasslands. A further simple majority analysis increased the ability of detecting grassland, crops and urban zones. The combination of the majority analysis and the proposed automatic classification system seems an effective approach to classifying vegetation types in highly fragmented and complex Alpine landscapes on a regional scale. This paper describes bed profile and grain size distribution adjustments in a mountain river (Maso di Spinelle River, Italian Alps) stabilized by a sequence of boulder check-dams. The control works were originally designed to simulate the geometry of natural step-pool channels, where tumbling flow is the dominant hydraulic regime. Local scouring downstream of 29 drop structures is analysed through the use of nondimensional parameters where maximum scour depth and scour length are normalised to the drop height. Prior laboratory data reveal a pattern similar to field scours, where complex interactions occur between drop height, critical flow depth, and step spacing. The linkage between scour length and depth is also discussed. There seems to be a maximum step height for impinging jets that is approximately twice the drop height; this maximum may explain the upper limit of the steepness factor found in high-gradient step-pool streams. If such a maximum upper limit is confirmed by further studies, this may aid designs of foundation heights for transverse control works in steep channels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
