The article relates a study which investigates the temperature sensitivities of the turnover times of three different soil organic matter (SOM) fractions for 11 forest site along a temperature gradient in the southern Italian Alps. The turnover times of the SOM fractions were estimated from their carbon isotope content values and their correlations with mean annual soil temperatures were determined. Also, a correlation for confounding effects of soil acidity and clay content on the temperature sensitivities of the intermediate and stabilized SOM fractions was included in the analysis. The results indicated that a 1° Centigrade increase in temperature could lead to decrease in turnover times of 4-11% for intermediate fractions and 8-16% for stabilized SOM fractions.
