The effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on deposition and surface water chemistry were investigated in an area south of the Alps. Long-term data provided by the monitoring networks revealed that the deposition of sulfur and nitrogen compounds in this area has stabilized since around 2010; in 2020, however, both concentrations and deposition were significantly below the average values of the previous decade for SO4 and NO3. Less evident changes were observed for NH4 and base cation. The estimated decrease of deposition in 2020 with respect to the previous decade was on average − 54% and − 46% for SO4 and NO3, respectively. The lower deposition of SO4 and NO3 recorded in 2020 was caused by the sharp decrease of SO2 and particularly of NOx air concentrations mainly due to the mobility restrictions consequent to the COVID-19 lockdown. The limited effects on NH4 deposition can be explained by the fact that NH3 emission was not affected by the lockdown, being mainly related to agricultural activities. A widespread response to the decreased deposition of S and N compounds was observed in a group of pristine freshwater sites, with NO3 concentrations in 2020 clearly below the long-term average. The rapid chemical recovery observed at freshwater sites in response to the sharp decrease of deposition put in evidence the high resilience potential of freshwater ecosystems in pristine regions and demonstrated the great potential of emission reduction policy in producing further substantial ameliorations of the water quality at sensitive sites. High mountain lakes provide essential ecosystem services and have a high conservation value. Therefore, understanding how glacier retreat will affect their ecological functioning and water quality is crucial. Here, we tested how shallow high mountain lakes having different glacial influences differ in their abiotic main features and food web structure using a multiple ecological indicator approach. We identified 13 functional groups within the planktonic and littoral communities, each one representing a biotic indicator and a node in a simplified food web network. The abiotic environment and most functional groups differed significantly as a consequence of the glacial influence. In general, runoff from glacial meltwaters resulted in highly simplified food webs. Considering that many turbid glacially fed lakes are losing their hydrological connection with disappearing/retreating glaciers and shifting to a clear state, our results suggest that this shift could enhance food web complexity, but at the cost of losing specific habitats. Further, retreat of large glaciers will form new glacially fed lakes, but it remains unclear whether this will buffer the expected habitat and biodiversity loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mount Guglielmo in the Italian Alps is an ancient transhumance area where man-made ponds for watering cattle are an ancestral component of the landscape and represent the most important breeding sites for common frogs (Rana temporaria) in the study area. Egg-masses in 30 mountain ponds from the Mount Guglielmo were counted from 2005-2015 to monitor the population trends of R. temporaria, after a putative population decline due to lethal bacterial infections which affected the tadpoles from 2002 to 2006. Egg-mass counts were also used to understand how the recovery of ponds from the natural process of drying-out and the replacement of traditional ponds with pools waterproofed with polymers influence the population dynamics of R. temporaria and the suitability of the ponds as breeding sites. This R. temporaria population increased over the study period, suggesting that the population was able to withstand long lasting larval mortality. Population increase was also sustained by the recovery of some dried ponds, but the modern pools were less suitable than traditional ponds for R. temporaria reproduction. These results suggest that the persistence of the traditional practices related to transhumance (e.g. maintenance of man-made ponds) in the study area is probably of pivotal importance for the conservation of the local herpetofauna. Zooplanktonic microcrustaceans of the Daphnia pulex group appear highly differentiated at high altitudes as a result of alternative colonizations and quick local adaptation to harsh environments. In particular, the occurrence of deeply differentiated mountain lineages of European Daphnia pulicaria ( EuPC) is highly related to glacial advances and retreats during the Pleistocene. Nowadays, one single ancient EuPC lineage survives in the Pyrenees, with another inhabiting the High Tatra Mountains. Much less is known about populations inhabiting the Alps, where EuPC populations are extremely rare. Recently, four new melanic populations have been discovered in lakes in the Western Italian Alps, offering the opportunity to study their origin and adaptations. We inferred phylogenetic relationships of melanic high-mountain populations in order to disentangle their history and clarify the colonization patterns of alpine populations. Molecular data suggest that dark populations originated from at least two ancestors, one genetically close to boreal haplotypes, the other apparently related to refugial populations that survived in southern Europe. Therefore, dark pigmentation and obligate parthenogenesis evolved independently within both lineages inhabiting the studied lakes as extreme local adaptations to the alpine environment. Fish introduction is a major threat to alpine lake biota leading to the loss of native species and to the degeneration of natural food-webs. This study provides an extensive investigation on the impact of the introduced fish Salvelinus fontinalis on the native communities of alpine lakes in the Gran Paradiso National Park. We compared the macroinvertebrate and zooplankton communities of six stocked and nine fishless lakes with a repeated sampling approach during the summers 2006-2009. The impact of fish presence on alpine lake fauna is often mediated by the strong seasonality governing these ecosystems, and it dramatically affects the faunal assemblage of littoral macroinvertebrates and the size, structure, and composition of the pelagic zooplankton community with a strong selective predation of the more visible taxa. Direct ecological impacts include a decrease or extinction of non-burrower macroinvertebrates and of large zooplankton species, while small zooplankton species and burrower macroinvertebrates were indirectly advantaged by fish presence. Due to the existence of a compensation between rotifers and crustaceans, fish presence does not affect total zooplankton biomass and diversity even if fish are a factor of ecological exclusion for large crustaceans. While poorly dispersing taxa such as amphibians may have limited scope to track recent and rapid climate change by means of large range shifts, they may follow their climate envelope with short elevational shifts in mountain areas. Such elevational shifts are poorly documented by empirical data for amphibians. In this study, we analysed a 15-year data series on the distribution of three amphibian species (Bufo bufo , Triturus carnifex and Rana temporaria) inhabiting a mountain pond network in the southern Italian Alps, where temperatures have increased significantly over the last decades. By using multi-season occupancy models, we estimated the occupancy trend of each species over the study period and tested the occurrence of an actual elevational shift after accounting for the probability of false absence. The upper elevational limit of the two eurythermal species (B. bufo and T. carnifex) underwent a significant and progressive upward shift of ca. 200 m. Our results provide evidence of the ability of amphibians to perform rapid elevational shifts, great enough to track predicted rates of climate warming. Preserving and improving habitat connectivity between lowlands and highlands could safeguard the opportunity for such elevational migrations, but mountain aquatic habitats must be preserved in order to provide a safe refuge for amphibians escaping climate warming.
