This research paper highlights and addresses the lack of a systematic review of the methods used to evaluate Learning Analytics (LA) and Learning Analytics Dashboards (LAD) of Adaptive Learning Platforms (ALPs) in the current literature. Addressing this gap, the authors built upon the work of Tretow-Fish and Khalid (2022) and analyzed 32 papers, which were grouped into six categories (C1-6) based on their themes. The categories include C1) the evaluation of LA and LAD design and framework, C2) the evaluation of user performance with LA and LAD, C3) the evaluation of adaptivity, C4) the evaluation of ALPs through perceived value, C5) the evaluation of Multimodal methods, and C6) the evaluation of the pedagogical implementation of ALP's LA and LAD. The results include a tabular summary of the papers including the categories, evaluation unit(s), methods, variables and purpose. While there are numerous studies in categories C1-4 that focus on the design, development, and impact assessment of ALP's LA and LAD, there are only a few studies in categories C5 and C6. For the category of C5), very few studies applied any evaluation methods assessing the multimodal features of LA and LADs on ALPs. Especially for C6), evaluating the pedagogical implementation of ALP's LA and LAD, the three dimensions of signature pedagogy are used to assess the level of pedagogy evaluation. Findings showed that no studies focus on evaluating the deep or implicit structure of ALP's LA. All studies examine the structural surface dimension of learning activities and interactions between students, teachers, and ALP's LA and LAD, as examined in categories C2-C5. No studies were exclusively categorized as a C6 category, indicating that all studies evaluate ALP's LA and LAD on the surface structure dimension of signature pedagogy. This review highlights the lack of pedagogical methodology and theory in ALP's LA and LAD, which are recommended to be emphasized in future research and ALP development and implementation. European Polistine wasps inhabit mainly temperate and warm climate regions. However, the paper wasp Polistes biglumis represents an exception; it resides in mountainous areas, e.g., in the Alps and in the Apennines. In these habitats, the wasps are exposed to a broad temperature range during their lifetime. We investigated whether they developed adaptations in their metabolism to their special climate conditions by measuring their CO2 production. The standard or resting metabolic rate and the metabolism of active wasps was measured in the temperature range which they are exposed to in their habitat in summer. The standard metabolic rate increased in a typical exponential progression with ambient temperature, like in other wasps. The active metabolism also increased with temperature, but not in a simple exponential course. Some exceptionally high values were presumed to originate from endothermy. The simultaneous measurement of body temperature and metabolic rate revealed a strong correlation between these two parameters. The comparison of the standard metabolic rate of Polistes biglumis with that of Polistes dominula revealed a significantly lower metabolism of the alpine wasps. This energy saving metabolic strategy could be an adaptation to the harsh climate conditions, which restricts foraging flights and energy recruitment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper considers some problems of the Late Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic periods in Northern Italy. More precisely, it deals with chronology, settlement pattern, techno-typological characteristics of knapped stone assemblages, and climatic changes that have taken place in the region from the discovery of the first sites in the 1960s and the excavations that soon followed to the present state of research. The Italian Alps, the Piedmont, and the valleys that descend from the high massifs have yielded important traces of Late Palaeolithic (Final Epigravettian) and Mesolithic (Sauveterrian and Castelnovian) sites and findspots, some of which are rock shelters that were settled throughout several millennia. This paper describes and discusses the evidence available mainly from two regions of the western and eastern Alpine arc, which are characterised by very different landscapes and yielded a great variety of archaeological features. This paper gives an overview over all currently available data sets for the European Long-term Ecosystem Research (eLTER) monitoring site Gesäuse-Johnsbachtal. The site is part of the LTSER platform Eisenwurzen in the Alps of the province of Styria, Austria. It contains both protected (National Park Gesäuse) and non-protected areas (Johnsbachtal). Although the main research focus of the eLTER monitoring site Gesäuse-Johnsbachtal is on inland surface running waters, forests and other wooded land, the eLTER whole system (WAILS) approach was followed in regard to the data selection, systematically screening all available data in regard to its suitability as eLTER's Standard Observations (SOs). Thus, data from all system strata was included, incorporating Geosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Sociosphere. In the WAILS approach these SOs are key data for a whole system approach towards long term ecosystem research. Altogether, 54 data sets have been collected for the eLTER monitoring site Gesäuse-Johnsbachtal and included in the Dynamical Ecological Information Management System – Site and Data Registry (DEIMS-SDR), which is the eLTER data platform. The presented work provides all these data sets through dedicated data repositories for FAIR use. This paper gives an overview on all compiled data sets and their main properties. Additionally, the available data are evaluated in a concluding gap analysis with regard to the needed observation data according to WAILS, followed by an outlook on how to fill these gaps. This paper investigates the application of genetic programming (GP) for dynamic symbolic regression (SR), addressing the challenge of adapting machine learning models to evolving data in practical applications. Benchmark instances with changing underlying functions over time are defined to assess the performance of a genetic algorithm (GA) as a traditional evolutionary algorithm and an age-layered population structure (ALPS) as an open-ended evolutionary algorithm for dynamic symbolic regression. This study analyzes population dynamics by examining variable frequencies and impact changes over time in response to dynamic shifts in the training data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the GA and ALPS in handling changing data, showcasing their ability to recover and evolve improved solutions after an initial drop in population quality following data changes. Population dynamics reveal that variable impacts respond rapidly to data changes, while variable frequencies shift gradually across generations, aligning with the indirect measure of fitness represented by variable impacts. Notably, the GA shows a strong dependence on mutation to avoid variables becoming permanently extinct, contrasting with the ALPS's unexpected insensitivity to mutation rates owing to its reseeding mechanism for effective variable reintroduction. This paper is a continuation of a previous one in which I described and revised different Middle Triassic nassellarian Radiolaria from the Alps and Carpathians illustrated with drawings. On the present paper, are described two new groups of Middle Triassic dicyrtid Nassellaria with bell-shaped shell from the same area to enrich the inventory of these microfossils. Two new families (Gorispelidae and Humerocyrtiidae), five new genera (Silicotintinnabulum, Colpotrelus, Gorispela, Pozsvartia and Humerocyrtis) and 30 new species are described from these genera and illustrated with drawings [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hiking is one of the most popular leisure sport activities practiced in the Alps during the summer season, but bears the risk of mountain emergencies, accidents, and fatalities. This paper provides an updated analysis of hiking accidents for the years 2015 to 2021 in the Austrian Alps, thereby outlining fatal and non-fatal accident characteristics. Methods: For this retrospective analysis, mountain hiking accidents documented by the Austrian Alpine Police during a 7-year period were screened for potential exclusion criteria. The final sample size consisted of 7368 accidents and 7552 victims. The outcome measures were mainly specified by sex, age, injury degree, injury location, pathophysiological characteristics, and cause of injury. Results: The overall annual number of accidents showed a continuous increase from 428 in 2015 to 544 in 2021. In total, 7.1% of the total victims died during the 7-year period, with male hikers being significantly more affected than female hikers (m: 80.8%, f: 19.2%; p ≤ 0.001). The sex specific distribution for non-fatal hiking accidents was 55.9% in women and 44.1% in men. Male victims showed significantly more frequent cardiovascular events (m: 78.5%, f: 21.5%), multiple injuries (m: 60.2%, f: 39.8%), and wounds/blood loss (m: 57.4%, f: 42.6%) than female victims, whereas women showed more fractures (m: 31.5%, f: 68.5%) than men (p ≤ 0.001). Additionally, men were more likely to injure their abdomen/chest (3.7%), head (14.1%), and multiple body parts (26.5%), whereas women were more likely to injure the ir ankle or foot (42.3%). Finally, men were more likely to have an accident during the ascent (24.1%), whereas women during the descent (69.0%) (p ≤ 0.001). The combined analysis of past evolutionary trajectories of channel morphology and temporal patterns of driving factors is fundamental to understanding present river conditions, supporting river management and evaluating future changes. Rivers in Europe underwent important channel changes during the Anthropocene in response to changing natural drivers and anthropogenic pressures. A considerable number of papers have been published on this topic, in the last decades. In this study, a comprehensive meta‐analysis on channel changes during the last 200 years in Europe was performed, aiming to provide quantitative information on the intensity of changes, to highlight regional scale similarities and dissimilarities in evolutionary morphological trajectories and to discuss the main causes of such changes. Based on a review, 102 papers were selected, addressing 145 channel reaches flowing through five main mountain ranges (Iberians, Alps, Apennines, Balkans and Carpathians) in the southern and eastern parts of Europe. The results show that active channel narrowing (between 26% and 36% on average) and incision (between 1 and 2 m) prevailed in most rivers between the 1800s and the 1950s, although widening was documented in some rivers of the Alps and the Apennines. Most multi‐thread reaches maintained their pattern until the mid‐20th century. Active channel changes accelerated during the 1950s–1990s (or 2000s) period, with channel narrowing up to 60% and channel incision up to 14 m. Multi‐thread patterns strongly decreased in frequency, with anabranching channels disappearing and single‐thread patterns becoming predominant. The cumulative effect of multiple and concomitant human pressures (gravel mining, channelisation and damming) was identified as the main driving factor for these accelerated changes. These findings must feed the public debate about preventing alterations of river ecosystems—exerted by anthropic disturbances—in a context of rapid economic development, especially in river systems still poorly altered and thus preserving wide, active and heterogeneous fluvial corridors. In this paper we examine the possibility of dilute axion stars converting to photons in the weak, large-scale magnetic field of the Milky Way and show that they can resonate with the surrounding plasma and produce a sizable signal. We consider two possibilities for the plasma: free electrons and HII regions. In the former case, we argue that the frequency of the photons will be too small to be observed even by space-based radio telescopes. In the latter case, their frequency is larger, safely above the solar wind cut-off. We provide an estimate of the flux as a function of the decay constant and show that for fa< 2 × 1011 GeV, the signal will be above the radio emission of the solar system's planets and it could potentially be detected by the NCLE instrument which is on board the Chang'e-4 spacecraft. Finally, we calculate the time scale of decay of the axion star and demonstrate that back-reaction can be neglected for all physically interesting values of the decay constant, while the minimum time scale of decay is in the order of a few hours. The spread of the alphabet in Italy occurred between the 7th and the 6th centuries BC, resulting in the appearance of texts written in so many different languages and in such limited territorial space that one can hardly observe another similar event (Venetic, Raetic, Etruscan, Picenian, Faliscan, Latin, Umbrian, Oscan, Greek, etc.). In this paper, we analyzed inscriptions produced by the Veneti, the ancient inhabitants of a region located between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps, which has provided mainly short sepulchral and votive texts. After a careful analysis, some so far poorly understood texts revealed the development of symbols to represent numbers and the measurement of time. These features are connected with the experience of the Etruscans and show characteristics shared with neighboring Celtic populations. The inscriptions also highlight a focus on the supernatural and the underworld. Cultural influences from the east, especially from Egypt, which represent a prominent moment in the evolution of Greece in the 7th century BC, have left traces in figurative culture and, quite unexpectedly, even in language. This paper provides a comprehensive description of preserved copper plates used for map printing in order to enrich the existing knowledge and, at the same time, contribute with new knowledge on the topic of the engraving of old maps. The dimensions, thickness, and weight of individual printing plates were measured. Qualitative indicators of the material were also examined. Printing plates originating from countries north of the Alps (former Czech lands) and from Mediterranean regions (Malta and Italy) are represented. For the purpose of the study, the term printing plate refers to a copperplate on which the engraving was made using the burin or line etching technique. These are some of the oldest reproduction techniques used for printing old maps. The period studied covers the 18th century, approximately. Studies dealing with a large set of printing plates and their classification are rather an exception (Hameleers 1989). Since climate change has a significant impact on glaciers, it is essential to track their morphological change by identifying variations in ice mass. In combination with modern photogrammetric approaches, such as Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and Multi-View-Stereo (MVS) dense matching, historical aerial photographs may offer useful information for this objective. Point clouds of the 3D surface of the glaciers may be used to track changes in thickness and height during years. By using appropriate methods for calculating the distances between pairs of point clouds, this operation may be completed. Here, an Alpine glacier massif on Mount Blanc in the Italian Alps was chosen as the case study. National Geographic and the Forestry Institute of France (IGNF) provided seven data sets of digitized analog aerial photos. These were chosen, downloaded, and utilized for photogrammetric analysis. These data sets span almost 40 years, from 1967 to 2006, in total. While the change in ice thickness of these glaciers was relatively small until the mid-1990s, this study revealed an increasing reduction rate at the beginning of 21st century. This paper describes the adopted methodological approach for photogrammetric reconstruction, quality assessment and point cloud comparison. This paper focuses on the everyday religious practices of second-generation Muslims who have been born, raised, and socialized in the Alps-Adriatic region. These individuals are developing their own forms of religiousness and perspectives on religion. Religious practices are often regarded as a mere continuation of Islamic traditions in the countries from which their parent generation migrated. However, this generation practices religion in ways that are shaped by socialization in a largely secularized postmodern society and by inter-religiosity, i.e., interaction between people with different beliefs that provokes them to reflect on attitudes, altering their perspectives. Whereas their parents or grandparents more or less lived in their own bubble, mainly because they did not speak the language well enough, the new generation see inter-religious interaction and communication as a matter of course—part of the everyday practices that they take for granted. The empirical section of this paper looks at the experiences and everyday practices of the new Muslim generation. It draws on a participatory project focusing on the photovoice method, which involved Muslim youth not as the subjects of research but as co-researchers. In addition to this approach, the methodology incorporated phenomenological anecdotal research and reading. Adopting a participatory approach, the young people reported on their specific everyday experiences and everyday inter-religious practices. In the process, they described not only their experiences of foreignness and exclusion but also transcultural strategies and ways to address such experiences, such as adopting a self-confident position, taking action, and developing hybrid life plans. The study of aerosols in high mountain regions is essential because particulate matter can play a role in altering the energy balance of high mountain regions, and aerosols can accelerate glacier melting in high mountain areas by darkening the ice surface, reducing its reflectivity (albedo). Studying aerosols in high mountain areas provides insights into long-range transport of pollutants, atmospheric dynamics, and climate change impacts. These regions can serve as valuable observatories for studying atmospheric processes. The main aim of this paper is to define the main sources of aerosols over an entire year of sampling at the Col Margherita Atmospheric Observatory (MRG; 46°22 ′ 0.059 ′′ N, 11°47 ′ 30.911 ′′ E; 2543 m a.s.l.), a high-altitude background site in the eastern Italian Alps. Here, we discuss the potential origins of more than 100 chemical markers (major ions, water-soluble organic compounds, trace elements, and rare earth elements) using different approaches. Some diagnostic ratios were applied, but source apportionment using positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to define the main inputs of PM 10 collected at this high-altitude site, resulting in the identification of four factors: (1) Saharan dust events, (2) long-range marine/anthropogenic influence, (3) biogenic sources, and (4) biomass-burning and anthropogenic emissions. It can be inferred that, despite the distant location of the Col Margherita site, both regional pollution and long-range anthropogenic pollution have discernible effects on this area. A convincing explanation of the smallness of neutrino masses is represented by the Type-I Seesaw mechanism, where the two measured neutrino mass differences can be generated by introducing at least two right-handed neutrinos. In an ultraviolet complete model, it is possible to dynamically generate the heavy Majorana scale through the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a global Abelian symmetry and the most economical realisation consists in coupling the two exotic neutral leptons to a singlet complex scalar field. The associated Goldstone boson is often dubbed as Majoron, which may achieve a non-vanishing mass by means of a small term that explicitly breaks the Abelian symmetry. In a generic model, the neutrino and Majoron mass generation mechanisms are completely uncorrelated. In this paper, instead, we reduce the landscape of possible models proposing a unique, minimal and predictive framework in which these two types of masses are strictly tied and arise from the same source. Polythermal glaciers can trap considerable volumes of liquid water with the potential to generate devastating outburst floods. This study aims to identify water‐filled subglacial reservoirs from ambient seismic noise collected by moderate‐cost surveys. The horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio technique is highly sensitive to impedance contrasts at interfaces, thus commonly used to estimate glacier thickness. Here, we focus on the inverse ratio, that is, the V/H spectral ratio (VHSR), whose high values indicate a low impedance volume beneath the surface, suggesting subglacial cavities. We analyze VHSR peaks from a seismic array of 60 nodes installed on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps); data were gathered over 15 days. Mapping the VHSR amplitude over the free surface reveals the main cavity locations and the basal areas affected by melting within the glacier. Results obtained in the field are supported by a conceptual model based on 3D finite‐element simulations. Plain Language Summary: Considerable volumes of liquid water may be trapped within cavities in polythermal glaciers. If these cavities rupture, the resulting outburst flood has the potential to cause devastation in populated mountain areas. With the aim of testing methods to locate such cavities, we installed 60 small 3‐component seismic sensors on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps), which is known to contain such cavities. We used these sensors to test a detection method based on ambient seismic noise. For 3 weeks, the sensors recorded vibrations within the glacier. On a glacier without cavities, these vibrations ought to be predominantly in the horizontal direction. In the presence of a cavity, we expect the ice above the cavity to vibrate mostly vertically—like a bridge. In this paper, we highlight areas on the glacier where vertical vibrations were stronger than horizontal vibrations. These areas fit well with the locations of the main known cavities in this glacier, and with areas affected by basal melting. We supported our field observations with modeling based on 3D simulations, paving the way to a new method to locate water‐filled cavities within glaciers. Spatial climate data sets that extend back in time over many decades are an important resource for climate monitoring. The long‐term consistency of such data sets is, however, compromised by changes in the measurement systems over time. In this paper, we introduce a data set of monthly precipitation on a 5‐km grid over the European Alps that extends back to the late 19th century. In deriving the "long‐term Alpine precipitation reconstruction" (LAPrec), special care is taken of variations in the station network, in order for the data set to satisfy high standards in long‐term consistency. LAPrec builds on a reconstruction method that integrates the available information in two portions: The first is a set of high‐quality homogenized station series, taken from the HISTALP data archive, covering the entire period almost continuously. The second is a high‐resolution gridded precipitation analysis, taken from the "Alpine Precipitation Grid Data Set," constructed from thousands of rain‐gauges but covering a few decades only. We demonstrate how the reconstruction approach successfully introduces mesoscale structures that are not resolved by the available long‐term station series, more plausibly so than a predecessor data set using conventional interpolation. We also illustrate that LAPrec reveals long‐term precipitation trends that are spatially more consistent and more detailed than the trends in popular climate monitoring data sets. Over the period 1871–2017 a statistically significant increase is found in winter over the northern parts of the Alps (1%–2% per 10 years). LAPrec is available in two versions (back until 1871 and 1901 respectively) from the Copernicus climate data store. In the Northern Apennines, the Internal Ligurian Units are considered deformed and metamorphosed fragments of the Ligure-Piemontese oceanic basin. In this paper, we report on the temperature and pressure conditions of the metamorphic peak for four Internal Ligurian Units, estimated using different geothermometers and geobarometers based on the white mica and chlorite compositions. These minerals were formed during the D1 deformation phase in the pre-Oligocene. The results indicate that the Portello and Gottero units are both characterized by metamorphic conditions pertaining to low blueschists facies, while the Colli-Tavarone and Bracco-Val Graveglia Units show a lower metamorphic imprint that produces assemblages of prehnite-pumpellyite facies. The estimated geothermal gradient for the metamorphic peak achieved by the analyzed Internal Ligurian Units during the D1 phase is 7–15 °C/Km, which is indicative of deformation in a subduction setting. Under these conditions, the D1 phase developed in these units as a result of underplating at the base of the accretionary wedge during the closure of the Ligure-Piemontese basin. Hydrological modelling of small mountainous catchments is particularly challenging because of the high spatio-temporal resolution required for the meteorological forcings. In situ measurements of precipitation are typically scarce in these remote areas, particularly at high elevations. Precipitation reanalyses propose different alternative forcings for the simulation of streamflow using hydrological models. In this paper, we evaluate the performances of two hydrological models representing some of the key processes for small mountainous catchments (< 300 km 2), using different meteorological products with a fine spatial and temporal resolution. The evaluation is performed on 55 small catchments of the northern French Alps. While the simulated streamflows are adequately reproduced for most of the configurations, these evaluations emphasize the added value of radar measurements, in particular for the reproduction of flood events. However, these better performances are only obtained because the hydrological models correct the underestimations of accumulated amounts (e.g. annual) from the radar data in high-elevation areas. Axion clumps in an external magnetic field can emit electromagnetic radiation which causes them to decay. In the presence of a plasma, such radiation can become resonant if the clump frequency matches the plasma frequency. Typically, the decay or back-reaction of the clump is ignored in the literature when analyzing such radiation. In this paper we present a self consistent, semi-analytic approach which captures axion backreaction using energy conservation. We find that inclusion of back-reaction changes the clump frequency over time enabling clumps with a range of different initial frequencies to become resonant at some point in their time evolution. This paper questions the evaluation of innovation systems and innovation measurements and the effectiveness of innovation policies applied at the territorial level by assessing whether the existing European regional scoreboard is effective in providing accurate inputs for decision-makers in mountainous regions. The aim of the research is to provide, through comparative analysis by using statistical multi-methods of two mountainous macro-regions (the Alps and the Carpathians), a possible and available path to develop novel perspectives and alternative views on innovation systems' performance for informed and territorial-based policy making by using the indicators of the Regional Innovation Scoreboard. The methodology used includes descriptive statistics, chi-square bivariate test, Student's t test, one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc multiple comparisons, multilinear regression analysis, and decision tree with CRT (classification and regression trees) algorithm. Our results emphasize the similarities and differences between the Alpine and Carpathian mountain regions, find the best predictors for each mountain region, and provide a scientific basis for the development of a holistic approach linking measurement theory, innovation systems, innovation policies, and their territorial approach toward sustainable development of mountain areas. The paper's contribution is relevant in the context of remote, rural, and mountain areas, which are usually left behind in terms of innovation chances and in the context of the COVID-19 aftermath with budget constraints. People settle near water. Almost all life forms need water. Water is very important for life on earth. Consensus theory explains the circle of water through evaporation, precipitation and accumulation. Meteorologists don't know much about volcanoes. Volcanologists don't know much about weather. This is how modern science works, specialists for every small diversification of whatever science branch. How could anyone within that paradigm ever get a holistic picture of the whole? It is full of contradictions, misinterpreted results and it also seems to keep certain mysteries alive. Most of them could be more easily understood just by not being ignorant towards knowledge from laboratory experiments and peer-reviewed papers made decades ago. This paper is a thought-provoking new approach to the formation and activities of the Alps, and many of its features as a part of the greater environment. It also is meant as a serious warning for millions of people living in the Alps region, which spans from the North Sea down to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Black Sea to the Atlantic. In the early nineteenth century, the Scottish geologist Thomas Allan (1777–1833) stayed for a period of vacation in Nice (Maritime Alps, SE France), the 'capital' of French Riviera. Allan had the occasion to run several excursion in the surroundings of the city, thus making numerous original observations about the geological setting of the region, which he reported in a paper published in 1818 in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Making constant reference to the familiar rocks of Great Britain and Ireland, Allan described the stratigraphic succession of the Nice area in one of the earliest geological works on that region—and the first written in the English language. The Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PVGIS) is a web application that provides free access to solar radiation and temperature data, typical meteorological year (TMY) data, and to photovoltaic performance assessment tools for any place in most parts of the world. The PVGIS was originally developed over 20 years ago, and since then, it has been under continuous development. At present, there are two versions of the PVGIS online—the older version 5.1 and the newest version 5.2. PVGIS 5.2 includes substantial improvements compared to the previous version, e.g., the update of the underlying data sets both in terms of quality, resolution, and geographical coverage and the extension of the time period used. This paper focuses on comparing the TMYs (and more specifically the TMY time series of air temperature), coming from both PVGIS 5.1 and 5.2, with the TMY produced on the basis of ground station meteorological data and with the ground station data itself. The results show that whereas overall the errors and biases for most locations are within the expected range (mean stationRMSE 4.27), these differences increase in places with complicated topography, e.g., in the Alps (maximum stationRMSE 9.50). Overlooking the importance of non-stationarity and normally distributed models in previous studies, this paper aims to fill the gap in literature based on time series between 2000 and 2019 for an Alps Adriatic country on tourism-led employment. Before implementing the Granger Causality Test, the vector autoregressive model is applied. The results confirmed that tourist arrivals significantly impact the hospitality labour market in Slovenia as employment in the lodging industry was driven in bi-causal directions to overall tourist arrivals. Accurate snow cover modeling is a high stake for mountain regions. Alpine snow evolution and spatial variability result from a multitude of complex processes including interactions between wind and snow. The SnowPappus blowing snow model was designed to add blowing snow modeling capabilities to the SURFEX/Crocus simulation system for applications across large spatial and temporal extents. This paper presents the very first spatialized evaluation of this simulation system over a 902 km2 domain in the French Alps. Here we compare snow cover simulations to the spatial distribution of snow height obtained from Pleiades satellites stereo-imagery and to Snow Melt-Out Dates from Sentinel-2 time series over three snow seasons. We analyzed the sensitivity of the simulations to three different precipitation datasets and two horizontal resolutions. The evaluations are presented as a function of elevation and landform types. The results show that the SnowPappus model forced with high-resolution wind fields enhances the snow cover spatial variability at high elevations allowing a better agreement with observations above 2500 m and near peaks and ridges. Model improvements are not obvious at low to medium altitudes where precipitation errors are the prevailing uncertainty. Our study illustrates the necessity to consider error contributions from blowing snow, precipitation forcings, and unresolved subgrid variability for robust evaluations of spatialized snow simulations. Despite the significant effect of the unresolved spatial scales of snow transport, 250 m horizontal resolution snow simulations using SnowPappus are found to be a promising avenue for large-scale modeling of alpine snowpacks. Following the projected increase in extreme precipitation, an increase in extreme snowfall may be expected in cold regions, e.g., for high latitudes or at high elevations. By contrast, in low- to medium-elevation areas, the probability of experiencing rainfall instead of snowfall is generally projected to increase due to warming conditions. Yet, in mountainous areas, despite the likely existence of these contrasted trends according to elevation, changes in extreme snowfall with warming remain poorly quantified. This paper assesses projected changes in heavy and extreme snowfall, i.e., in mean annual maxima and 100-year return levels, in the French Alps as a function of elevation and global warming level. We apply a recent methodology, based on the analysis of annual maxima with non-stationary extreme value models, to an ensemble of 20 adjusted general circulation model–regional climate model (GCM–RCM) pairs from the EURO-CORDEX experiment under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario. For each of the 23 massifs of the French Alps, maxima in the hydrological sense (1 August to 31 July) are provided from 1951 to 2100 and every 300 m of elevations between 900 and 3600 m. Results rely on relative or absolute changes computed with respect to current climate conditions (corresponding here to +1 ∘ C global warming level) at the massif scale and averaged over all massifs. Overall, daily mean annual maxima of snowfall are projected to decrease below 3000 m and increase above 3600 m, while 100-year return levels are projected to decrease below 2400 m and increase above 3300 m. At elevations in between, values are on average projected to increase until +3 ∘ C of global warming and then decrease. At +4 ∘ C, average relative changes in mean annual maxima and 100-year return levels, respectively, vary from -26% and -15% at 900 m to +3% and +8% at 3600 m. Finally, for each global warming level between +1.5 and +4 ∘ C, we compute the elevation threshold that separates contrasted trends, i.e., where the average relative change equals zero. This elevation threshold is shown to be lower for higher return periods, and it is projected to rise from 3000 m at +1.5 ∘ C to 3350 m at +4 ∘ C for mean annual maxima and from 2600 to 3000 m for 100-year return levels. Forests strongly modify the accumulation, metamorphism and melting of snow in midlatitude and high-latitude regions. Recently, snow routines in hydrological and land surface models were improved to incorporate more accurate representations of forest snow processes, but model intercomparison projects have identified deficiencies, partly due to incomplete knowledge of the processes controlling snow cover in forests. The Snow Under Forest (SnoUF) project was initiated to enhance knowledge of the complex interactions between snow and vegetation. Two field campaigns, during the winters 2016–2017 and 2017–2018, were conducted in a coniferous forest bordering the snow study at Col de Porte (1325 m a.s.l., French Alps) to document the snow accumulation and ablation processes. This paper presents the field site, the instrumentation and the collection and postprocessing methods. The observations include distributed forest characteristics (tree inventory, lidar measurements of forest structure, subcanopy hemispherical photographs), meteorology (automatic weather station and an array of radiometers), snow cover and depth (snow pole transect and laser scan) and snow interception by the canopy during precipitation events. The weather station installed under dense canopy during the first campaign has been maintained since then and has provided continuous measurements throughout the year since 2018. The recent results from the Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) collaborations show the first evidence for the detection of a stochastic background of gravitational waves at the nHz frequencies. This discovery has profound implications for the physics of both the late and the early Universe. In fact, together with the interpretation in terms of supermassive black hole binaries, many sources in the early Universe can provide viable explanations as well. In this paper, we study the gravitational wave background sourced by a network of axion-like-particle (ALP) domain walls at temperatures around the QCD crossover, where the QCD-induced potential provides the necessary bias to annihilate the network. Remarkably, this implies a peak amplitude at frequencies around the sensitivity range of PTAs. We extend previous analysis by taking into account the unavoidable friction on the network stemming from the topological coupling of the ALP to QCD in terms of gluon and pion reflection off the domain walls at high and low temperatures, respectively. We identify the regions of parameter space where the network annihilates in the scaling regime ensuring compatibility with the PTA results, as well as those where friction can be important and a more detailed study around the QCD crossover is required. The climatic response of mountain permafrost and glaciers located in high-elevation mountain areas has major implications for the stability of mountain slopes and related geomorphological hazards, water storage and supply, and preservation of palaeoclimatic archives. Despite a good knowledge of physical processes that govern the climatic response of mountain permafrost and glaciers, there is a lack of observational datasets from summit areas. This represents a crucial gap in knowledge and a serious limit for model-based projections of future behaviour of permafrost and glaciers. A new observational dataset is available for the summit area of Mt Ortles, which is the highest summit of South Tyrol, Italy. This paper presents a series of air, englacial, soil surface and rock wall temperatures collected between 2010 and 2016. Details are provided regarding instrument types and characteristics, field methods, and data quality control and assessment. The obtained data series are available through an open data repository (10.5281/zenodo.8330289, Carturan et al., 2023). In the observed period, the mean annual air temperature at 3830 m a.s.l. was between -7.8 and -8.6 ∘ C. The most shallow layers of snow and firn (down to a depth of about 10 m) froze during winter. However, melt water percolation restored isothermal conditions during the ablation season, and the entire firn layer was found at the melting pressure point. Glacier ice is cold, but only from about 30 m depth. Englacial temperature decreases with depth, reaching a minimum of almost -3 ∘ C close to the bedrock, at 75 m depth. A small glacier located at 3470 m a.s.l., close to the summit of Mt Ortles, was also found in cold conditions down to a depth of 9.5 m. The mean annual ground surface temperature was negative for all but one monitored sites, indicating cold ground conditions and the existence of permafrost in nearly all debris-mantled slopes of the summit. Similarly, the mean annual rock wall temperature was negative at most monitored sites, except the lowest one at 3030 m a.s.l. Since 2010, work has been underway to curate and catalogue the historical documentation archive of the Verbania Pallanza section of the CNR Water Research Institute, located on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the Italian subalpine area. Italian limnology took its first steps here in the first half of the 1900s with the activity of Marco De Marchi. It then developed professionally from 1938 with the foundation of the Italian Institute of Hydrobiology, based in De Marchi's villa in Verbania Pallanza. The curation of the archives dating from these earliest times to the present has been done with professional archivist technicians from the Archival Superintendence and in collaboration with researchers from the Institute. The archived documents include those from the first phase of the organization of the Institute, as well as those derived from scientific and administrative activities and exchanges with the Ministry of Education. The documents also cover activities at a second section of the Institute, located in an ancient historical residence in Varenna, on the shores of Lake Como. The archive has a photographic section, which includes a series of photographic glass plates, digitized to allow for current use, containing photos of the Institute's environments and laboratories at different times through its history. A third section of the archive consists of around 50 interviews with aquatic scientists on topics related to research projects carried out in the past. A further section concerns the recording of about 150 seminars on environmental research carried out in the institute between 2015 and 2020. The main research topics considered concern physical, chemical and biological limnology, with particular attention to Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta (severely polluted in the past due to industrial waste), and high-altitude lakes in the Alps. The Institute also houses a library dedicated to environmental issues and some miscellaneous papers by the most important scholars of freshwater science in Italy, with publications starting from the second half of the nineteenth century. Other collections of archival interest are a museum of field and laboratory instruments, and a collection of biological samples, mainly plankton, collected in various Italian lakes. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised and unified multi-domain Image-to-Image translation model for an image weather domain translation. Most existing multi-domain Image-to-Image translation methods are capable of translating fine details such as facial attributes. However, the image translation model between multiple weather domains, e.g., sunny-to-snowy, or sunny-to-rainy, have to consider the large domain gap. To address the challenging problem, in this paper, we propose WeatherGAN based on a proposed UResNet generator. Our model consists of the UResNet generator, a PatchGAN discriminator, and a VGG perceptual encoder. UResNet is a combined model of U-Net and ResNet to address the ability of each model, that preserve input context information and generate realistic images. The PatchGAN discriminator encourages the generator to produce realistic images of the target domain by criticizing patch-wise details. We also leverage VGG perceptual encoder as a loss network, which guides the generator to minimize the perceptual distance between an input image and generated images to enhance the quality of outputs. Through the extensive experiments on Alps, YouTube driving (our benchmark dataset), and BDD datasets, we demonstrate that WeatherGAN produces more satisfactory results of the target domain compared to the baselines. Besides, we also conduct a data augmentation task to show the usability of our generated images by WeatherGAN, and it shows the overall object detection performance of YOLO v3 is improved in our results on BDD dataset. Monitoring of the periglacial environment is relevant for many disciplines including glaciology, natural hazard management, geomorphology, and geodesy. Since October 2022, Rock Glacier Velocity (RGV) is a new Essential Climate Variable (ECV) product within the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). However, geodetic surveys at high elevation remain very challenging due to environmental and logistical reasons. During the past decades, the introduction of low-cost global navigation satellite system (GNSS) technologies has allowed us to increase the accuracy and frequency of the observations. Today, permanent GNSS instruments enable continuous surface displacement observations at millimetre accuracy with a sub-daily resolution. In this paper, we describe decennial time series of GNSS observables as well as accompanying meteorological data. The observations comprise 54 positions located on different periglacial landforms (rock glaciers, landslides, and steep rock walls) at altitudes ranging from 2304 to 4003 ma.s.l. and spread across the Swiss Alps. The primary data products consist of raw GNSS observables in RINEX format, inclinometers, and weather station data. Additionally, cleaned and aggregated time series of the primary data products are provided, including daily GNSS positions derived through two independent processing tool chains. The observations documented here extend beyond the dataset presented in the paper and are currently continued with the intention of long-term monitoring. An annual update of the dataset, available at 10.1594/PANGAEA.948334 ,​​​​​​​ is planned. With its future continuation, the dataset holds potential for advancing fundamental process understanding and for the development of applied methods in support of e.g. natural hazard management. In the face of a continuous increase in the number of tourists in the Alps, the associated traffic volumes, and the resulting negative externalities, there is an urgent need to design policies capable of managing tourist traffic efficiently and to invest in transport systems and infrastructure wisely, given the limited financial, spatial and environmental resources. Unfortunately, while there is a considerable research interest in long-distance travel and arrival/departure patterns of tourists, research on tourist mobility during the stay at the destination is almost non-existent. This prevents policy-makers from making informed decisions backed by scientific evidence. The paper presents a data collection study that contributes to filing this gap. This 'data paper' reports on the motivation, design and administration of a bespoke travel-activity survey of tourists at vacation destinations. It informs other researchers about the encountered difficulties and helps them optimize data collection effort in their future studies. Besides the contribution to survey methodology, the paper reports on a rare and policy-relevant dataset, provides descriptive results, and thereby contributes to evidence-based design of transport policies in tourist regions. Existing conceptualizations of active sport tourism lack an empirical foundation in explaining the processes of embodiment through which active sport tourists engage with destination space. Adopting an autophenomenographic perspective, this paper explores embodiment in the context of a cycling tourism experience encompassing six iconic mountain passes within the French Alps synonymous with the Tour de France. Qualitative data draw attention to kinaesthetic and visceral sensations arising through multisensory feedback, along with affective responses produced as the body traverses venerated sport landscapes. This research highlights mind–body processes that shape mobile, active sport tourism experiences and provides an empirical and conceptual foundation to inform future studies of embodiment in active sport tourism. Lake Nakatsuna, the central lake of the Nishina Three Lakes located in a narrow intermontane valley in the northern Japanese Alps, is thought to have formed by large landslides damming the paleo-Himekawa River at approximately 30 ka B.P. The mechanism of these large landslides in relation to geological and geomorphological attributes is less understood for the Nakatsuna Landslide. This paper focuses on the geomorphological evolution of Lake Nakatsuna in relation to the lithofacies of landslide blocks in tectonically active, hydrothermally altered, and weathered areas. Geomorphological and geological mapping, characterization of weathering grades and alteration intensity through field observation, petrographic observation, clay mineral analysis by XRD and major bulk geochemistry by XRF methods were adopted to establish the trends and intensity of source rock weathering and its relation to landslide mechanisms. Three paleo-landslide blocks have been identified from geomorphological field observations that may have formed the Lake Nakatsuna landslide dam. Petrographic observation reveals that approximately 30% of the mineral grains are slightly to moderately altered to form clay minerals (chlorite, kaolinite, illite, etc.) derived from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rocks. CIA values range between 58 and 94 and reveal slight to strong hydrothermal activity. Along with the concentrations of abnormal geomorphic features such as steep slopes, isolated hills and depressions, and extremely loose sediments containing small and large blocks that have broken like a jigsaw puzzle in the hillslope and upper reach, it was determined that there was a large landslide that dammed the paleoriver and formed Lake Nakatsuna. INTRODUCTION: Pilots’ mental health has received increased attention following Germanwings Flight 9525 in 2015, where the copilot intentionally crashed the aircraft into the French Alps, killing all on board. An investigation of this incident found that the pilot had a depressive disorder. METHODS: This systematic review investigated peer reviewed studies of pilot mental health published since 1980. A total of 58 papers were identified. RESULTS: Two main methodologies have been employed: questionnaires and database record searches. Anxiety, depression, and suicide were the most commonly investigated mental health conditions. There were almost an equal number of studies that found a higher prevalence of psychological symptoms in pilots as those that found a lower prevalence, relative to controls or the general population. Prevalence rates were higher in studies relying solely on questionnaires than in studies employing database record searches. DISCUSSION: Prevalence estimates are closely associated with methodology, so it is difficult to determine the true rate. Factors that might account for low prevalence estimates include under-reporting of symptoms by pilots and a reluctance to diagnose on the part of health professionals. Factors that might account for high prevalence estimates include anonymous assessment, the use of questionnaires that do not align with clinical disorders, and inconsistent cut-off scores. It is recommended that future studies on prevalence use well-validated clinical measures, and that more research be conducted on the effects of particular disorders on job performance. The Albergian unit (AU), belonging to the Liguria-Piemonte oceanic domain of the Western Alps, comprises a thick sequence of calcschists and minor meta-ophiolitic bodies, from metric to kilometric in size. The occurrence of fresh lawsonite in its metasedimentary cover is known since the end of the XIX century. This paper reports the occurrence of fresh lawsonite also in the metamafic rocks and presents petrological data to constrain the tectono-metamorphic evolution of one of these metamafic bodies exposed in the upper Chisone Valley. In the Monte Albergian - Gran Mioul area, the AU consists of a kilometric body of basalt and/or diabase metabreccias (with minor metagabbros and meta-plagiogranite clasts and blocks), covered by discontinuous layers of quartzitic metasandstones, black micaschists, and eventually a thick sequence of calcschists. This paper focuses on the petrographic and mineral chemistry features of these lithologies, with emphasis on the preserved magmatic textures in the metamafic clasts, and on fresh lawsonite occurrence and its replacement. The second part of the paper deals with phase equilibrium modeling of two representative samples from the area: a Mg-Al metagabbro and a metabreccia with plagiogranite clasts. Thermodynamic modeling of isochemical phase diagrams (i.e., P-T pseudosections), performed for the first time in this unit, allowed constraining the metamorphic peak in the lawsonite blueschist-facies conditions, at about 18-21 kbar and 380-430°C, followed by a partial re-equilibration in the epidote-stability field. This paper presents debris-flow data recorded in the Moscardo Torrent (eastern Italian Alps) between 1990 and 2019. In this time interval, 30 debris flows were observed: 26 of them were monitored by sensors installed on the channel, while four were only documented through post-event observations. Monitored data consist of debris-flow hydrographs, measured utilizing ultrasonic sensors, and rainfall. Debris flows in the Moscardo Torrent occur from early June to the end of September, with higher frequency in the first part of summer. The paper presents data on triggering rainfall, flow velocity, peak discharge, and volume for the monitored hydrographs. Simplified triangular hydrographs and dimensionless hydrographs were derived to show the basic features of the debris flows in the Moscardo Torrent (time to peak, surge duration, flow depth) and permitting comparison with other instrumented catchments. Rockslides are a major hazard in mountainous regions. In formerly glaciated regions, the disposition mainly arises from oversteepened topography and decreases through time. However, little is known about this decrease and thus about the present-day hazard of huge, potentially catastrophic rockslides. This paper presents a new theoretical concept that combines the decrease in disposition with the power-law distribution of rockslide volumes found in several studies. The concept starts from a given initial set of potential events, which are randomly triggered through time at a probability that depends on event size. The developed theoretical framework is applied to paraglacial rockslides in the European Alps, where available data allow for constraining the parameters reasonably well. The results suggest that the probability of triggering increases roughly with the cube root of the volume. For small rockslides up to 1000 m3 , an exponential decrease in the frequency with an e -folding time longer than 65 000 years is predicted. In turn, the predicted e -folding time is shorter than 2000 years for volumes of 10 km3 , so the occurrence of such huge rockslides is unlikely at the present time. For the largest rockslide possible at the present time, a median volume of 0.5 to 1 km3 is predicted. With a volume of 0.27 km3 , the artificially triggered rockslide that hit the Vaiont reservoir in 1963 is thus not extraordinarily large. Timely information about the need to thin forests is vital in forest management to maintain a healthy forest while maximizing income. Currently, very-high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data can provide crucial assistance to experts when evaluating the maturity of thinnings. Nevertheless, this task is still predominantly carried out in the field and demands extensive resources. This paper presents a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to detect the necessity and urgency of carrying out thinnings using only remote sensing data. The approach uses very-high-spatial-resolution RGB and near-infrared orthophotos; a canopy height model (CHM); a digital terrain model (DTM); the slope; and reference data, which, in this case, originate from spruce-dominated forests in the Austrian Alps. After tuning, the model achieves an F1 score of 82.23% on our test data, which indicates that the model is usable in a practical setting. We conclude that DCNNs are capable of detecting the need to carry out thinnings in forests. In contrast, attempts to assess the urgency of the need for thinnings with DCNNs proved to be unsuccessful. However, additional data, such as age or yield class, have the potential to improve the results. Our investigation into the influence of each individual input feature shows that orthophotos appear to contain the most relevant information for detecting the need for thinning. High-resolution (< 1 km) atmospheric modeling is increasingly used to study precipitation distributions in complex terrain and cryosphere–atmospheric processes. While this approach has yielded insightful results, studies over annual timescales or at the spatial extents of watersheds remain unrealistic due to the computational costs of running most atmospheric models. In this paper we introduce a high-resolution variant of the Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research (ICAR) model, HICAR. We detail the model development that enabled HICAR simulations at the hectometer scale, including changes to the advection scheme and the wind solver. The latter uses near-surface terrain parameters which allow HICAR to simulate complex topographic flow features. These model improvements clearly influence precipitation distributions at the ridge scale (50 m), suggesting that HICAR can approximate processes dependent on particle–flow interactions such as preferential deposition. A 250 m HICAR simulation over most of the Swiss Alps also shows monthly precipitation patterns similar to two different gridded precipitation products which assimilate available observations. Benchmarking runs show that HICAR uses 594 times fewer computational resources than the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) atmospheric model. This gain in efficiency makes dynamic downscaling accessible to ecohydrological research, where downscaled data are often required at hectometer resolution for whole basins at seasonal timescales. These results motivate further development of HICAR, including refinement of parameterizations used in the wind solver and coupling of the model with an intermediate-complexity snow model. Mountains are perceived as places of biodiversity, as attractive places with breathtaking aesthetic views and epitomized by their unique landscape features. As mountains are the second most demanded outdoor destination category at a global level after beaches and islands, the steady growth of tourism places high pressure on sensitive mountain ecosystems. As can be observed from tourism practice in mountain environments, the distribution of tourism activities is highly uneven. In the Alps, one of the best-known regions with relentless tourism growth, a substantial concentration of tourism intensity can be traced to specific locations and valleys, whereas other parts have to cope with trends of marginalization. In this situation, many concerned stakeholders have long advocated for more balanced economic and tourism development. The initiative of "Mountaineering Villages" promoted by the Alpine Convention is one of a few respective actions to shift perspectives and persuade tourists to engage in sustainable tourism activities. The paper explores how these activities are linked to the balanced use of cultural landscapes and the narratives that are exposed as convincing development models in these regions. The Chenaillet Ophiolite represents a very well‐preserved portion of Ligurian‐Piedmont ocean in the Western Alps. It is formed from an oceanic lithospheric succession comprising exhumed mantle, various mafic intrusives (i.e., gabbro sensu lato), and a world‐renowned sequence of pillow basalts. Apart from scarce breccias closely related to oceanic lithosphere, no sedimentary cover is exposed. Historically, the Chenaillet Ophiolite has been known for its very low temperature–low pressure Alpine metamorphism, ascribed to obduction processes. However, studies aimed at constraining the peak pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions of Alpine metamorphism are virtually lacking, the general focus having been so far on its high temperature metamorphism and geochemical features. In this paper, we investigate two kinds of rocks: gabbro and albitite/alkali syenite, whose petrographic features shed light on the complex metamorphic history of the Chenaillet Ophiolite. Detailed analyses of mineral assemblages, blastesis/deformation relationships, and mineral chemical data allow two metamorphic events to be distinguished: an earlier, high temperature event (already reported in the literature) and a second, later low temperature, high pressure event, recognized here for the first time. The low temperature, high pressure event is strikingly testified by the occurrence of lawsonite relicts in the gabbro and of interstitial omphacite in the albitite. Thermodynamic modelling (i.e., via isochemical phase diagrams) performed on a gabbro sample suggests for this unit a minimum of 9 kbar and 300°C and a maximum of 15 kbar and 450°C. Overlapping these P–T conditions with those inferred for the albitite based on the observed mineral assemblage allows the Alpine peak metamorphism to be constrained to 10–11 kbar and 340–360°C. These P–T conditions suggest a thickness of the overlying nappe stack of about 35–40 km, which is incompatible with obduction or burial processes, and instead consistent with subduction processes related to the Alpine orogeny. We argue that, opposite to the common belief that the Chenaillet Ophiolite escaped Alpine metamorphism, our new data strongly support the idea that it experienced low temperature‐blueschist‐facies metamorphism, whose evidence can still be tracked in those (few) rocks that better recorded and preserved it. Among the types of landslides that occur in Alpine areas, rockfalls are one of the most frequent and dangerous. Rockfalls affect every type of rock mass with greater or lesser incidence based on the intrinsic characteristics of rocks (structural setting, lithotype, geotechnical quality, weathering conditions, etc.) and climate features of geographic areas considered. In order to assess the hazard and subsequently the risk associated with these phenomena, it is first necessary to identify areas most likely to be affected. This paper presents a methodology applicable on a regional scale to identify the most susceptible Alpine areas to rockfalls. The methodology is based on statistical cross-analyses of environmental factors to identify the Alpine areas most susceptible to rockfalls. The predisposing factors considered to generate a rockfall susceptibility map are both qualitative (geological variables) and quantitative (morphometric, altimetric and climatic variables) and have been compared with a selection of historical data on rockfalls occurrence and distribution (consisting in 2800 events). As result, a classification of the Piemonte's Alpine territory identifying 5 classes characterized by a greater or lesser propensity to generate rockfalls has been obtained. The regional susceptibility map has been subsequently used as basis to identify road networks more exposed to rockfall hazard to obtain a preliminary risk analysis at regional scale. Snow avalanches cause danger to human lives and property worldwide in high-altitude mountainous regions. Mathematical models based on past data records can predict the danger level. In this paper, we are proposing a neural network model for predicting avalanches. The model is trained with a quality-controlled sub-dataset of the Swiss Alps. Training accuracy of 79.75 % and validation accuracy of 76.54 % have been achieved. Foreign language teaching represents a place that combines linguistic and cultural learning. The Alps as a culturally diverse living space are suitable as a topic for culturally reflective teaching. The focus of the paper is to explore how the concepts of Places of Memory (Erinnerungsorte) and Patterns of Interpretation (Deutungsmuster) can be used inclusively in teaching German as a foreign language. After an introduction of the two concepts, considerations of compatibility and didactic potential are made. This is followed by a presentation of the two concepts using the Alps as an example. On the one hand it is about life in mountain villages and cultural identity, on the other hand it is about traditional costume. The goal of the exercises is a critical examination from different perspectives. Specifically, they aim at providing access to Patterns of Interpretation as well as the development of discourse competence and symbolic competence for orientation in official German-speaking regions and, beyond that, one's own positioning. Stream ecosystems are diverse and dynamic habitats that are strongly influenced by the direct and indirect consequences of human interventions. Several initiatives have been started all over Europe to satisfy the European guidelines for the protection of local water bodies, but a standardised procedure across national borders fulfilling all relevant aspects and parameters of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) does not exist. In this context, we propose a new methodical approach based on salmonid fish populations to assess stream quality to increase the comparability of individual assessments due to standardized survey and evaluation methods for hydromorphology. Our approach is based on the Austrian and Italian methods, which account for the European standards, and it has been tested in 81 stream sections representative of different site and anthropogenic use conditions in the European Alps. The assessment procedure is composed of a set of 11 indicators, which were selected to evaluate longitudinal and lateral morphological and temporal dynamics of morphological and hydrological conditions. The indicators were combined into three indices, the morphology (IM), hydrology (IH), and hydromorphology indices (IHM), to obtain a holistic picture with as few parameters as possible. The definition of indicators and indices, their methodical implementation and practical testing in the field, were carried out by an interdisciplinary team of international experts. The resulting and tested field manual is included with this publication as Supplementary material. The applicability, strengths, and weaknesses of the approach are discussed in the present paper. Climate change has reduced the comfort of community environments, and there is an urgent need to improve the health and well-being of low-income residents through design and technical measures. Therefore, this paper conducts research in the context of an ongoing social housing renovation project in Aosta, Italy, in a cold winter and hot summer Alpine environment. The study combined interviews, field measurements, and multiple software simulations to analyze the home of an older adult experiencing energy deprivation. The study found that the indoor acoustic environment quality meets the requirements of various sound-related standards. Still, the lighting and thermal environment must be designed to reduce glare and western sun exposure, and the air quality could improve. Residents' demand for renovation is low technology, low cost, and high comfort. Therefore, suggestions for combining active and passive transformation measures and maximizing the use of climate and resources are proposed. The lighting and thermal environment are optimized based on the green wisdom of the Haylofts building of the Walser family in the Alps: increase ventilation and reduce indoor air age to improve air quality. Overall, a comprehensive assessment of extreme climatic conditions facilitates the quantitative and qualitative study and control of social housing environments, improves occupant comfort, and decarbonizes such social building stock.
