A report from the Amsterdam University Medical Center discusses the similarities and differences between behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) in terms of behavior and social cognition. The study, which included 89 patients, found that behavioral symptoms worsened over time in bvFTD, while most measures remained stable and even improved in PPD. Emotion recognition and socioemotional sensitivity declined in bvFTD but remained stable in PPD. The researchers emphasize the need for better assessment of social cognition in bvFTD and suggest that serum neurofilament light (sNfL) levels may be a useful marker for behavioral progression in neuropsychiatric populations.
