Using the High attitude Interferometer WIND observation balloon and Antarctic Jang Bogo station high latitude conjugate observations of the thermospheric winds we investigate the seasonal and hemispheric differences between the northern and southern hemispheres in June 2018. We found that the summer (northern) hemisphere dayside meridional winds have a double‐hump feature, whereas in the winter (southern) hemisphere the dayside meridional winds have a single hump feature. We attribute that to stronger summer, perhaps, northern hemisphere cusp heating. We also compared the observation with NCAR Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) model. The TIEGCM reproduced the double‐hump feature because of added cusp heating. The summer hemisphere has stronger anti‐sunward winds. This is the first time we have very high latitude conjugate thermospheric wind observations. The mitogenome of Euphausia crystallorophias collected from the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area (RSR MPA) is described for the first time. The assembled mitogenome was 17,291 bp in length and consisted of two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and noncoding regions, all of which were identical to those of other euphausiid species. The most common start codon for the 13 PCGs was ATG, and the most common termination codon was TAA. The overall G + C content was 33.2% in the heavy strand. Euphausia crystallorophias was sister to E. superba in the phylogenetic analysis. The mitogenome of E. crystallorophias provided significant DNA molecular data for further identification and phylogenetic analysis within the euphausiids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) play a crucial intermediary role in connecting top predators and krill in the food web of the Antarctic Ocean. Despite their crucial role, research on their abundance is lacking. In this study, we estimated the abundance of juvenile Antarctic silverfish as foundational data for predicting their abundance. The density of juvenile Antarctic silverfish was estimated using an acoustic backscattering theoretical model. The mean volume backscattering strength was used to investigate the vertical and horizontal distributions of juvenile Antarctic silverfish in the Antarctic Ross Sea. The survey area was located near Cape Hallett, Antarctica, where Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), ice krill (E. crystallorophias), and Antarctic silverfish coexist. The survey was performed four times using the Korean Antarctic research ship, RV Araon (R/V, 7507 GT). Frame trawls were conducted to identify the length and weight of the target fish species in the survey area. Captured Antarctic silverfish captured measured 3–9 cm. The maximum target strength (TS) was −92.93 dB at 38 kHz, −86.63 dB at 120 kHz, and 85.89 dB at 200 kHz. The average TS was −100.00 dB at 38 kHz, −93.00 dB at 120 kHz, and −106.90 dB at 200 kHz. Most juvenile Antarctic silverfish were found at a depth of 100 m and were distributed closer to sea ice. Between nearshore and polynya waters, the fish demonstrated a proclivity for polynya waters. The Antarctic whitefin plunderfish Pogonophryne albipinna belongs to the family Artedidraconidae, a key component of Antarctic benthic ecosystems within the order Perciformes and the suborder Notothenioidei. While genome research on P. albipinna using short-read sequencing is available, high-quality genome assembly and annotation employing long-read sequencing have yet to be performed. This study presents a chromosome-scale genome assembly and annotation for P. albipinna, utilizing a combination of Illumina short-read, PacBio long-read, and Hi-C sequencing technologies. The resulting genome assembly spans approximately 1.07 Gb, with a longest scaffold measuring 59.39 Mb and an N50 length of 41.76 Mb. Of the 1,111 Hi-C scaffolds, 23 exceeded 10 Mb and were thus classified as chromosome-level. BUSCO completeness was assessed at 95.6%. The assembled genome comprises 50.68% repeat sequences, and a total of 31,128 protein-coding genes were predicted. This study will enhance our understanding of the genomic characteristics of cryonotothenioids and facilitate comparative analyses of their adaptation and evolution in extreme environments. Noticeable F‐region electron density (NmF2) depletions were observed in the winter‐nighttime polar cap ionosphere during solar minimum from the Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar (VIPIR) with Dynasonde analysis at Jang Bogo Station (JBS) in Antarctica. We focus on the F‐region density depletion events (known as polar holes) following a steady quiet condition that is defined with Kp values ≤ 1+ during 6 hr. Forty‐five polar holes were identified by JBS VIPIR/Dynasonde (JVD) in 2019. All of the events started over a wide range of nightside magnetic local time (22‐05 MLT) with a peak occurrence at 01–03 MLT. JVD measured exponential NmF2 decrease in the nightside MLT (∼19–2.5 hr) zone with e‐fold decay times distributed in the range of ∼0.5–∼3.5 hr before the onset of a polar hole. The e‐folding times decrease along the longitude from dusk toward midnight. The horizontal ion drift velocity (Vhor) estimated from JVD monotonically goes down from ∼190 m/s at 18 MLT to ∼100 m/s near magnetic midnight, and the NmF2 is depleted as Vhor decreases prior to the polar hole formation. The observations of the exponential NmF2 decrease and the positive correlation between NmF2 and Vhor prior to the polar holes are discussed in light of possible formation mechanisms of polar holes, including temporal variations and spatial structure of the polar ionosphere. The human-induced disturbances in Antarctica have caused changes in the structure and function of ecosystems. The Cape Hallett station was established in 1957 and abandoned in 1973. The station was built inside a penguin colony, and during its operation, many penguins were deported. Herein, we compared the number of breeding pairs across different time periods after station decommission and environmental remediation. The station occupied 4.77 ha within the Adélie penguin breeding area, and 349 nests were identified inside the station border in 1960. In 1983, the station's territory decreased to 4.2 ha; meanwhile, 1683 breeding pairs were counted in the old station area. The past station area re-inhabited by Adélie penguins had 6175 nests in 2019. We assumed that recolonization might be particularly related to artificial mounds. The results of the present study confirm the recolonization of Adélie penguins at Cape Hallett for the first time, with visual analysis of spatial-temporal changes. Additionally, we suggest that reconstruction of the artificial or enhanced habitat may be required for successful restoration. Furthermore, continuous species monitoring with specific notes are needed with management interventions to protect Antarctic ecosystems, as well as the Ross Sea region MPA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Against a changing climate, the development of evidence‐based and progressive conservation policies depends on robust and quantitative baseline studies to resolve habitat natural variability and rate of change. Despite Antarctica's significant role in global climate regulation, climate trend estimates for continental Antarctica are ambiguous due to sparse long‐term in situ records. Here, we present the longest, spatially explicit survey of Antarctic vegetation by harmonizing historic vegetation mapping with modern remote sensing techniques. In 1961, E. D. Rudolph established a permanent survey plot at Cape Hallett, one of the most botanically diverse areas along the Ross Sea coastline, harboring all known types of non‐vascular Antarctic vegetation. Following a survey in 2004 using ground‐based photography, we conducted the third survey of Rudolph's Plot in 2018 using near‐ground remote sensing and methodologies closely mirroring the two historic surveys to identify long‐term changes and trends. Our results revealed that the vegetation at Cape Hallett remained stable over the past six decades with no evidence of transformation related to a changing climate. Instead, the local vegetation shows strong seasonal phenology, distribution patterns that are driven by water availability, and steady perennial growth of moss. Given that East Antarctica is at the tipping point of drastic change in the near future, with biological change having been reported at certain locations, this record represents a unique and potentially the last opportunity to establish a meaningful biological sentinel that will allow us to track subtle yet impactful environmental change in terrestrial Antarctica in the 21st century. Although the effects of climate change have been observed in West Antarctica, much less observation is available for East Antarctica, where almost 90% of the Antarctic ice mass is located. It is now, that East Antarctica is at a tipping point for change, and it is now, that we need to establish progressive conservation measures. What is at stake? The vegetation in East Antarctica is distinct. Any organism that managed to survive here has highly specialized traits, and we only find lichens, mosses, cyanobacteria, and green algae. Especially the mosses are used biological sentinels because they live long and with high specificity. However, because they grow so slowly, any attempt to monitor variation in their fitness has to span decades rather than years or even seasons. This constitutes a key problem when trying to understand the natural dynamics of a functional ecosystem in East Antarctica. By applying machine learning and advanced statistics to modern aerial survey data as well as historic vegetation maps (the oldest in Antarctica, from 56 years ago), we created a unique harmonized data set and gained unique ecological insight. This allows us to establish a biological sentinel for change in East Antarctica, just before it is too late. Simple Summary: Patagonian moray cod is known to inhabit the cold waters near Antarctica, and it belongs to the Muraenolepis genus. This genus has seven species, and five of them are recently reported. The Muraenolepis genus has similar morphological characters, and this is a limitation of taxonomical classification. In this study, a genome survey and microsatellite marker analysis were conducted to characterize the genome profile for classification. As a result, genomic data such as genome size and microsatellite motifs were obtained. The Muraenolepididae family of fishes, known as eel cods, inhabits continental slopes and shelves in the Southern Hemisphere. This family belongs to the Gadiformes order, which constitutes one of the most important commercial fish resources worldwide, but the classification of the fish species in this order is ambiguous because it is only based on the morphological and habitat characteristics of the fishes. Here, the genome of Patagonian moray cod was sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq platform, and screened for microsatellite motifs. The genome was predicted to be 748.97 Mb, with a heterozygosity rate of 0.768%, via K-mer analysis (K = 25). The genome assembly showed that the total size of scaffolds was 711.92 Mb and the N50 scaffold length was 1522 bp. Additionally, 4,447,517 microsatellite motifs were identified from the genome survey assembly, and the most abundant motif type was found to be AC/GT. In summary, these data may facilitate the identification of molecular markers in Patagonian moray cod, which would be a good basis for further whole-genome sequencing with long read sequencing technology and chromosome conformation capture technology, as well as population genetics. Vertical incidence pulsed ionospheric radar (VIPIR) has been operated to observe the polar ionosphere with Dynasonde analysis software at Jang Bogo Station (JBS), Antarctica, since 2017. The JBS-VIPIR-Dynasonde (JVD) provides ionospheric parameters such as the height profile of electron density with NmF2 and hmF2, the ion drift, and the ionospheric tilt in the bottomside ionosphere. The JBS (74.6°S, 164.2°E) is located in the polar cap, cusp, or auroral region depending on the geomagnetic activity and local time. In the present study, an initial assessment of JVD ionospheric densities is attempted by the comparison with GPS TEC measurements which are simultaneously obtained from the GPS receiver at JBS during the solar minimum period from 2017 to 2019. It is found that the JVD NmF2 and bottomside TEC (bTEC) show a generally good correlation with GPS TEC for geomagnetically quiet conditions. However, the bTEC seems to be less correlated with the GPS TEC with slightly larger spreads especially during the daytime and in summer, which seems to be associated with the characteristics of the polar ionosphere such as energetic particle precipitations and large density irregularities. It is also found that the Dynasonde analysis seems to show some limitations to handle these characteristics of the polar ionosphere and needs to be improved to produce more accurate ionospheric density profiles especially during disturbed conditions. Meso- and macrozooplankton play crucial roles in the trophic web and the biological carbon pump in the ocean by transferring energy from lower to higher trophic levels and vertically exporting carbon from the surface to the deep ocean and seabed. In this study, zooplankton community structures in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, were analyzed using metabarcoding methods. Both regular barcode (RB) (using a PacBio Sequel system) and mini barcode (MB) (using the Illumina MiSeq platform) methods were utilized. As the result of a combination of the two bioinformatic pipelines used in the RB, 55 reliable haplotypes were obtained from the pooled zooplankton net samples, whereas 183 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were isolated from the MB metabarcoding analyses of 14 individual stations. Among these, 39 (70.9%) and 125 (90.6%) showed higher than 99% sequence identity to the database, indicating that there were sufficient reference sequences to employ metabarcoding analysis—except for several taxa, including small-sized copepods, cnidarians, and pneumodermatids. A high degree of shared taxa showed that both metabarcoding analyses were feasible for use in the analysis of zooplankton assemblages in the Ross Sea. However, RB would be more useful for the construction of a reference database due to its relatively high cost, whereas MB would be more economic for ecological surveys due to its relatively low cost (albeit, only if reference sequences were well documented using RB). Zooplankton assemblages were highly diverse in each sample site, presumably due to the narrow covered volumes of the vertical net-towed samples from polynyas in the Ross Sea. Realistic modeling of the winds and dynamical variations in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) at Southern Hemisphere (SH) mid‐to‐high latitudes near 60°S where dramatic motions occur has been a challenge. This work presents an evaluation of the MLT zonal and meridional winds from ∼80 to 98 km altitude produced by the high‐altitude version of the Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM‐HA) numerical weather prediction system during the Antarctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in September 2019. These results are compared with the coincident measurements by five meteor radars at Tierra del Fuego (TDF; 53.7°S, 67.7°W), King Edward Point (KEP; 54.3°S, 36.5°W), King Sejong Station (KSS; 62.2°S, 58.8°W), Rothera (ROT; 67.5°S, 68.0°W), and Davis (DAV; 68.6°S, 78.0°E) across SH mid‐to‐high latitudes. We find that the day‐to‐day variations in NAVGEM‐HA winds related to tidal motions are overall consistent with variations in the radar winds, and the daily mean winds have a correlation of 0.7–0.9 between them. Three‐hourly NAVGEM‐HA winds have a correlation of ∼0.5 and mean difference <10 m/s to the radar observations at most stations, and the Root Mean Square (RMS) error ranges from ∼25 to 35 m/s. Above 90 km altitude, the correlation coefficient decreases, and the difference and RMS error increase, indicating an upper limit to the validity of the NAVGEM‐HA results. Both the analyzed and observed winds reveal an enhancement in diurnal and semidiurnal tidal amplitude during this SH SSW. NAVGEM‐HA shows some evidence that nonmigrating tidal enhancements are produced through the interaction of migrating tides with planetary waves. Plain Language Summary: High Altitude (HA) meteorological analysis products of the Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) that assimilates various observations are believed to be able to provide a realistic description of the state of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Dramatic motions of the MLT region are detected during austral winter in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) over the area extending from the Southern Andes to the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Peninsula. Yet, due to lack of global wind observations, this dynamically active region has not been well explored. Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSWs) are manifestations of dynamic disruptions in the winter polar area, and in September 2019 an unusual SSW occurred over Antarctica. This study evaluates the evolution of MLT winds and related tidal variations during this SSW, using both the NAVGEM‐HA analysis results and the meteor radar observations at several locations within this very dynamic region. We have performed a one‐to‐one comparison and found that the analyzed daily mean winds generally agree with the observations. The NAVGEM‐HA numerical forecast system also captures the enhanced tidal motions observed by the radars during this Antarctic SSW. Brown Skuas (Stercorarius lonnbergi) are known to feed on other birds or eggs during the breeding season. In some cases, however, a few pairs monopolize a penguin colony, and the other skuas mainly forage in the sea. We installed automatic camera traps to monitor two groups of breeding Brown Skua pairs on King George Island: the nests of Group A were located near a Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colony, while those of Group B were relatively far away. From the resulting photographs, we were able to distinguish the food items that parents brought to the nest and could confirm the egg hatching date. Overall, 97.1% of the food items that group A brought to the nest were from the penguin colonies, while 94.1% of the prey items of group B were fish. Group A had a hatching date at least 8 days earlier than Group B. Our results show that a few Brown Skua pairs that bred near the penguin colony fed primarily on penguin nest contents such as eggs or chicks within their feeding territory and had earlier hatching dates. In the Antarctic ecosystem, leopard seals are known to be a main predator of penguins, while Weddell seals typically feed on fish and small crustaceans. In this study, we describe the observation of a Weddell seal that hunted juvenile Adélie Penguins on Inexpressible Island in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The Weddell seal remained in the water near the edge of the sea ice and attacked young individuals. The penguins were in the late phase of molting and appeared to just venture into the water, which indicates that the individuals were unfamiliar with the water and had lower swimming ability than adults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first video recording of Weddell seal predation on penguins and the first record on Adélie Penguins being attacked by the Weddell seals. In many seabirds, individuals abstain from eating during the moult period. Penguins have an intense moult that lasts for weeks, during which they are confined to land. Despite the importance for survival, it is still unclear how the faecal microbiota of Antarctic penguins changes in response to the moult fast. Here, we investigated the faecal microbiota of chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus) and gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) on King George Island, Antarctica. The bacterial community compositions during the feeding and moulting stages were compared for both species using bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicon on an Illumina MiSeq platform. Our results showed that the moult fast altered the bacterial community structures in both penguin species. Interestingly, the bacterial community composition shifted in the same direction in response to the moult fast but formed two distinct clusters that were specific to each penguin species. A significant increase in bacterial diversity was observed in gentoo penguins, whereas no such change was observed for chinstrap penguins. By analysing the contribution of the ecological processes that determine bacterial community assembly, we observed that processes regulating community turnover were considerably different between the feeding and moulting stages for each penguin. At the phylum level, the relative abundances of Fusobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were dominant in chinstrap penguins, and no significant changes were detected in these phyla between the feeding and moulting periods. Temporal variability and the vertical shoreline profile of an intertidal macroalgal assemblage were examined on the coast of Barton Peninsula, Maxwell Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. Sampling was performed during the three austral summer seasons from November 2016 to January 2019. The sampling interval for the summer shift was 1–2 months. Eighteen algal species were identified, with 75% relative coverage of the predominant red alga Iridaea cordata and endemic brown alga Phaeurus antarcticus. Temporal variation in the macroalgal assemblage showed 78.35% similarity between one month and 64.61% similarity between two months. Contour plots for visualizing macroalgal distribution were first attempted in this study, and compared to general distribution of tables and diagrams that were discontinuously expressed. The coastscape was expressed more quantitatively and continuously, and was also useful for explaining temporal changes such as summer abundance can be described as a shift from I. cordata to P. antarcticus. In addition, in terms of species composition, this study area corresponds to the middle to lower intertidal zone and shows the highest species diversity in King George Island, so it is expected to provide important information for the researches in Antarctic intertidal zones. Sex identification is a fundamental work for studying the behavioural ecology in animals. Although recent molecular sexing techniques have enabled us to distinguish the sexes, it is still convenient to discriminate the sexes with morphological traits especially when surveying colonial animals under harsh field conditions. For chinstrap and gentoo penguins in Antarctica, previous studies developed several morphological discriminant functions, but many studies did not adopt molecular sexing methods for deciding sexes. In this study, we tested previous morphology-based sexing methods to determine their applicability to adult chinstrap and gentoo penguins breeding at Narębski Point (Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 171) in Barton Peninsula on King George Island. Furthermore, we aimed to develop alternative morphological features to reliably discriminate penguin sexes. Our results showed that the accuracies of previously suggested functions varied among discriminant functions in both species (approximately 64–82%). Here, we developed new functions to discriminate sexes in chinstrap and gentoo penguins, using bill and middle toe size which are easily acquired and less error-prone. The classification accuracy of the discriminant functions derived in this study was >90% for both species. Also, it was successfully applicable to another chinstrap population. Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba) and salps (mainly Salpa thompsoni) are main components of Southern Ocean ecosystem, but little is known about their coastal distribution at a fine scale (<1 km). We deployed miniaturised cameras on breeding chinstrap ( n = 9 birds) and gentoo penguins ( n = 9 birds) in the Antarctic Peninsula region and obtained 2,333 krill images, 93 salp images and 609 sea floor images from 1,843 dives. 51.2 % of penguin dives that had salps present in the images occurred near the dives with krill images (within 5 min). The vertical distribution of salp images showed overlap with the upper depth zone of krill images. While 16.3 % of dives with krill images were associated in time with the sea floor, only 1.2 % of dives with salp images did. These results revealed close proximity between krill and salps within the penguin’s foraging range in an Antarctic coastal ecosystem. These results also imply that krill patches were common in both pelagic and benthic habitat, whereas salps were common mainly in pelagic habitat. If the effects of deployments are similar between the years or regions, inter-annual or regional comparison using the penguin-mounted camera will be valid for characterising prey environment in the penguin foraging area. Trematomus species (suborder Notothenioidei; family Nototheniidae) are widely distributed in the southern oceans near Antarctica. There are 11 recognized species in the genus Trematomus, and notothenioids are known to have high chromosomal diversity (2n = 24–58) because of relatively recent and rapid adaptive radiation. Herein, we report the chromosomal-level genome assembly of T. loennbergii, the first characterized genome representative of the genus Trematomus. The final genome assembly of T. loennbergii was obtained using a Pacific Biosciences long-read sequencing platform and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture technology. Twenty-three chromosomal-level scaffolds were assembled to 940 Mb in total size, with a longest contig size of 48.5 Mb and contig N50 length of 24.7 Mb. The genome contained 42.03% repeat sequences, and a total of 24,525 protein-coding genes were annotated. We produced a high-quality genome assembly of T. loennbergii. Abstract: Neutral temperatures near the mesopause region were estimated from the decay times of the meteor echoes observed by a VHF meteor radar during a period covering 2007 to 2009 at King Sejong Station (62.22°S, 58.78°W), Antarctica. While some previous studies have used all meteor echoes to determine the slope from a height profile of log inverse decay times for temperature estimation, we have divided meteor echoes into weak and strong groups of underdense meteor trails, depending on the strength of estimated relative electron line densities within meteor trails. We found that the slopes from the strong group are inappropriate for temperature estimation because the decay times of strong meteors are considerably scattered, whereas the slopes from the weak group clearly define the variation of decay times with height. We thus utilize the slopes only from the weak group in the altitude region between 86km and 96km to estimate mesospheric temperatures. The meteor estimated temperatures show a typical seasonal variation near the mesopause region and the monthly mean temperatures are in good agreement with SABER temperatures within a mean difference of 4.8K throughout the year. The meteor temperatures, representing typically the region around the altitude of 91km, are lower on average by 2.1K than simultaneously measured SATI OH(6–2) rotational temperatures during winter (March–October). Abstract: Adenoviruses have been identified in humans and a wide range of vertebrate animals, but not previously from the polar region. Here, we report the entire 26,340-bp genome of a novel adenovirus, detected by PCR, in tissues of six of nine South Polar skuas (Catharacta maccormicki), collected in Lake King Sejong, King George Island, Antarctica, from 2007 to 2009. The DNA polymerase, penton base, hexon and fiber genes of the South Polar skua adenovirus (SPSAdV) exhibited 68.3%, 75.4%, 74.9% and 48.0% nucleotide sequence similarity with their counterparts in turkey hemorrhagic enteritis virus. Phylogenetic analysis based on the entire genome revealed that SPSAdV belonged to the genus Siadenovirus, family Adenoviridae. This is the first evidence of a novel adenovirus, SPSAdV, from a large polar seabird (family Stercorariidae) in Antarctica. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We analyzed meteor decay times measured by a VHF radar at King Sejong Station by classifying strong and weak meteors according to their estimated electron line densities. The height profiles of monthly averaged decay times show a peak whose altitude varies with season at altitudes of 80−85km. The higher peak during summer is consistent with colder temperatures that cause faster chemical reactions of electron removal. By adopting temperature dependent empirical recombination rates from rocket experiments and meteor electron densities of 2×105−2×106 cm−3 in a decay time model, we are able to account for decreasing decay times below the peak for all seasons without invoking meteor electron removal by hypothetical icy particles. Simple Summary: Stable isotope analysis (SIA) and Stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR) model were used to identify the diet composition and regional differences of Adélie and Emperor penguins in Ross Sea region. Adélie Penguin at Cape Hallett fed on Antarctic krill and Adélie Penguin at Inexpressible Island fed on ice krill and Antarctic silverfish. To identify the dietary composition and characteristics of both Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri) penguins at four breeding sites, we performed stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis of down samples taken from penguin chicks. Adélie Penguin chicks at Cape Hallett mostly fed on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; 65.5 ± 3.5%), a reflection of the prevalence of that species near Cape Hallett, and no significant differences were noted between 2017 and 2018. However, Adélie Penguin chicks at Inexpressible Island, located near Terra Nova Bay, fed on both Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarctica; 42.5%) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias; 47%), reflecting the high biomass observed in Terra Nova Bay. Meanwhile, no significant difference was noted between the two breeding sites of the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguin chicks predominantly fed on Antarctic silverfish (74.5 ± 2.1%) at both breeding sites (Cape Washington and Coulman Island), suggesting that diet preference represents the main factor influencing Emperor Penguin foraging. The Cape petrel Daption capense, a seabird, is observed throughout the southern hemisphere including the Antarctic region. Herein, we report the complete mitogenome of Cape petrel with the GenBank accession number MH924023 to elucidate the genetic characteristics of this genus. The mitogenome is 17,312 bp long and comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. The overall base composition of the 13 PCGs is as follows: A (31.1%), C (30.3%), T (25.4%), and G (13.2%), with a GC content of 43.5%. The complete mitochondrial genome of Trematomus pennellii was determined by MiSeq platform. The mitogenome of T. pennellii was 15,976 bp in length and encoded 37 genes (13 proteins, 22 tRNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs) and a non-coding control region (D-Loop). Overall A + T contents (54.10%) in the mitogenome was higher than G + C contents (45.90%). Twenty-nine genes were located on H strand, whereas eight genes were identified on L strand. Among 13 protein-coding genes, unusual start codons were identified in COX1 (GTG), ND6 (ATT), COX2 (ATC), and ATP6 (ATC). The incomplete stop codon (T–) was identified in six genes including COXII, COXIII, NAD2, NAD3, NAD4, and Cytb. Simple Summary: Under limited resources, different species may coexist by segregating their food items and foraging time, but neighboring colonies within the same species may have highly overlapping foraging habits. Thus, it is hypothesized that intra-specific competition is more intense than the inter-specific competition. To test this hypothesis, we chose sympatrically breeding Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins at two neighboring colonies and tracked their foraging space and dive depths during chick-rearing. Here we report that there was a larger overlap in the foraging space between the two species than within each species, whereas there was lower inter-specific isotopic niche overlap than intra-specific isotopic niche overlap. Despite the low intra-specific spatial overlap, diets of conspecifics remained similar, resulting in the higher isotopic niche overlaps. Our results suggest that intra-specific competition is higher than inter-specific competition due to a lack of niche partitioning. Theory predicts that sympatric predators compete for food under conditions of limited resources. Competition would occur even within the same species, between neighboring populations, because of overlapping foraging habits. Thus, neighboring populations of the same species are hypothesized to face strong competition. To test the hypothesis that intra-specific competition is more intense than inter-specific competition owing to a lack of niche partitioning, we estimated the foraging area and diving depths of two colonial seabird species at two neighboring colonies. Using GPS and time-depth recorders, we tracked foraging space use of sympatric breeding Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins at Ardley Island (AI) and Narębski Point (NP) at King George Island, Antarctica. GPS tracks showed that there was a larger overlap in the foraging areas between the two species than within each species. In dive parameters, Gentoo penguins performed deeper and longer dives than Chinstrap penguins at the same colonies. At the colony level, Gentoo penguins from NP undertook deeper and longer dives than those at AI, whereas Chinstrap penguins did not show such intra-specific differences in dives. Stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ15N isotopes in blood demonstrated both inter- and intra-specific differences. Both species of penguin at AI exhibited higher δ13C and δ15N values than those at NP, and in both locations, Gentoo penguins had higher δ13C and lower δ15N values than Chinstrap penguins. Isotopic niches showed that there were lower inter-specific overlaps than intra-specific overlaps. This suggests that, despite the low intra-specific spatial overlap, diets of conspecifics from different colonies remained more similar, resulting in the higher isotopic niche overlaps. In a study on ciliate diversity, we discovered the new hypotrich species, Gonostomum jangbogoensis n. sp., in freshwater from Terra Nova Bay, Victoria Land, southeast Antarctica. We describe its morphology and morphogenesis using standard methods, and the SSU rRNA gene phylogeny is provided as well. Morphology of Gonostomum jangbogoensis n. sp. is characterized as follows: slender to elongated body shape; grayish under low magnification; cortical granules present; 32–41 adoral membranelles; 3 enlarged frontal cirri; 1 buccal cirrus; 2 frontoterminal cirri; 3 or 4 frontoventral cirral pairs, 2 pretransverse cirri, 6–7 transverse cirri; 13–19 left and 18–26 right marginal cirri; 17–23 paroral kinetids; 3 dorsal kineties; 3 caudal cirri; 2 macronuclear nodules with 1–3 micronuclei. The morphogenesis of the new species confirms that it has at least seven frontal-ventral-transverse cirral anlagen, which is also reported in Gonostomum sp. 1 sensu Shin from Korea. Even though these two populations occur very far from each other, the morphometric data prove that this character state, the seven cirral anlagen, is a stable feature across these populations and might be an apomorphy. The South Polar Skua, gull-like seabirds is the most fascinating Antarctic seabirds that lay two eggs at sites free of snow and ice and predominantly hunt pelagic fish and penguins. Blood samples of the South Polar SkuaStercorarius maccormickiwas collected during the summer activity near King Sejong station in Antarctica. The complete mitochondrial DNA sequence ofS. maccormickiwas 16,669 bp, showing conserved genome structure and orientation found in other avian species. The control region ofS. maccormickiwas 93- and 80 bp shorter compared to those ofChroicocephalus saundersiandSynthliboramphus antiquus respectively. Interestingly, there is a (CAACAAACAA)6repeat sequence in the control region. Our results ofS. maccormickimt genome including the repeat sequence, may provide useful genetic information for phylogenetic and phylogeographic histories of the southern skua complex. We analyzed meteor decay times measured by a VHF meteor radar at King Sejong Station, Antarctica (62.22°S, 58.78°W) to study diffusion processes of the meteor trails above the altitude of ∼93 km. Above this altitude, where the atmospheric density is so dilute that collisions between trail ions and ambient molecules become rare, diffusion of a meteor trail can be greatly affected by the geomagnetic field, resulting in anisotropic distribution of measured decay times over the azimuthal and elevation angles. Ecological macroalgal succession in glacier-free areas has remained at the pioneer seral stage despite six decades of glacial retreat at Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica. With the rapid melting of glaciers in the West Antarctic Peninsula owing to global warming, a massive amount of meltwater is flowing into the coast, creating marine environmental gradients such as turbidity, water temperature, and salinity. This study examined the spatial and vertical distributions (up to a depth of 25 m) of macroalgal assemblages from nine sites in Maxwell Bay and Marian Cove. The macroalgal assemblages were analyzed for six sites located 0.2, 0.8, 1.2, 2.2, 3.6, and 4.1 km away from the glacier, including three sites where the glacial retreat history of Marian Cove could be estimated. To investigate the effects of meltwater, differences in the coastal environment were analyzed based on data collected from five stations located 0.4, 0.9, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 km away from the glacier. The macroalgal assemblages and marine environment were divided into two groups—inside and outside the cove—based on the region 2–3 km away from the glacier, which has been ice-free since 1956 and shows significant differences. In the three sites near the glacier front, Palmaria decipiens was dominant, and three to four species were distributed, whereas in the two sites outside the cove, nine and 14 species appeared, respectively, similar to the assemblage of the other three sites in Maxwell Bay. Palmaria decipiens , a representative opportunistic pioneer species in Antarctica, is dominant because of its physiological adaptation despite the high turbidity and low water temperature of the glacier front. We analyzed the neutral wind data at altitudes of 80–100km obtained from a VHF meteor radar at King Sejong Station (KSS, 62.22°S, 58.78°W), a key location to study wave activities above the stratospheric vortex near the Antarctic Peninsula. The seasonal behavior of the semidiurnal tides is generally consistent with the prediction of Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM02) except in the altitude region above ~96km. Gravity wave (GW) activities inferred from the neutral wind variances show a seasonal variation very similar to the semidiurnal tide amplitudes, suggesting a strong interaction between gravity waves and the tide. Despite the consistent seasonal variations of the GW wind variances observed at the adjacent Rothera station, the magnitudes of the wind variance obtained at KSS are much larger than those at Rothera, especially during May–September. The enhanced GW activity at KSS is also observed by Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) from space in its temperature variance. The observed large wind variances at KSS imply that the Antarctic vortex in the stratosphere may act as an effective filter and source for the GWs in the upper atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: δ13C and δ15N of the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna tissues and their potential food sources were used to determine their dietary origins and their movements between diverse habitats of intertidal and subtidal rocky shores and tide pools of Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica in the austral summer. δ13C and δ15N of the organic matter sources of epilithic microalgae, macroalgae and suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) were readily distinguishable to discern their relative contribution to the limpet diets, with the most depleted values being found in SPOM and the most enriched in macroalgae. The limpets exhibited a spatial trend in distribution due to their seasonal migration, with smaller individuals in the subtidal zone compared with larger ones on the intertidal sites. The limpet isotopes had relatively broad ranges of δ13C and δ15N (−26.6 to −12.8‰ and 2.6–7.1‰, respectively), suggesting a dietary shift between habitats as well as size classes. The stable isotope ratios for each habitat seem likely to reflect the differing availabilities of the three potential food sources. Isotope mixing model results indicate a spatial shift in dietary mixture between habitats as well as limpet size classes. Epilithic microalgae and phytoplankton made great contributions to the diet of the subtidal limpets. Together with epilithic microalgae, macroalgae were significant contributors to the intertidal limpets where macroalgae were abundant. A higher contribution of macroalgae to the limpet diets was found in the tide pools. In contrast, while phytoplankton was an important food source for the limpet spat, a great dietary dependence on epilithic microalgae was found in the small-size limpets from the lower intertidal zone. Our results suggest that limpet grazing can determine microalgal and/or macroalgal abundance and coverage on the Antarctic rocky-shore ecosystem, and trophic structure of benthic food web can change along environmental gradients even at spatial scales of tens or hundreds of metres in the Antarctic. Drastic sea ice retreats in the Antarctic Peninsula, and the consequent environmental changes have brought about the consequences of biological adaptation and food competition. The isotopic niche is reflected by the ecological position and functional role of a species, which can be altered depending on these environmental changes. We assessed the isotopic niche and trophic positions (TP) of 3 seabirds on the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, to understand ecological interaction among the species. The average TP of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) (hereafter "krill") (2.6 ± 0.1) was estimated by using the compiled published data of the compound-specific nitrogen isotope ratio of glutamic acid and phenylalanine in the Southern Ocean, and TP values of the seabirds based on that of krill to be reliable according to ecological knowledge. Our results on the overlap of the isotopic niches of seabirds suggests potential diet competition among the consumers, such as the brown skua (Stercorarius antarcticus) and south polar skua (Stercorarius maccormicki), whereas the distinct and broad isotopic niche width of kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) suggesting that their adaptation through generalization was related to their extended habitat and various food sources. Our research indicates that isotopic niche of seabirds reflects their survival strategy for food competition. The occurrence and bioaccumulation of new and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), and Dechlorane Plus (DPs) and their related compounds (Dechloranes) in an ecosystem on King George Island, Antarctica are investigated. The new and legacy POPs were widely detected in the animal samples collected from Antarctica, which included Limpet, Antarctic cod, Amphipods, Antarctic icefish, Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins, Kelp gull, and South polar skua. The trophic magnification factors indicated that the levels of PCNs and HBCDs, as well as the legacy POPs, were magnified through the food web, whereas DPs might be diluted through the trophic levels contradicting the classification of Dechloranes as POPs. We examined wave activities in the Pc5 frequency band (~2–7 mHz) using the magnetic field data from five Antarctic stations, which are AGO3 (72.5° S Altitude-Adjusted Corrected Geomagnetic latitude), South Pole (SPA, 74.6° S), McMurdo (MCM) and Jang Bogo Station (JBS, 80° S), and Dome C (DMC, 89.1° S), during 2017. Pc5 waves at AGO3 and SPA show characteristics associated with Kelvin-Helmohltz instability on the magnetopause and substorm activities, under closed field lines conditions. The local time and seasonal dependence of Pc5 wave activities at polar cap stations (MCM, JBS, and DMC) are significantly different from those at AGO3 and SPA. These indicate that the generation mechanism of Pc5 activities in the open field line region at polar cap is different from that in the closed field lines.
