Since the origin of the carbonate platform concept, the reconstruction of the geometry and the evolution of the margin has been an intriguing topic. The Latium-Abruzzi platform is one of the largest shallow water domains of the Central Apennines, however, the reconstruction of the geometry and evolution of its margin has been classically problematic because the latter has been erased by the out-of-sequence Olevano-Antrodoco thrust system. The investigated area is placed in the Prenestini Mountains, the southernmost portion of the Sabina Domain, where a Cretaceous to Neogene carbonate succession, ascribed the Latium-Abruzzi platform margin, crops out. Stratigraphic and facies analyses showed a Late Cretaceous extensional stage that produced two main fault-block platforms, respectively, South Eastern Prenestini and South Western Prenestini platforms, developed westward of the large Latium-Abruzzi Platform domain. In these platforms, during the Paleocene–Eocene interval, pelagite deposition coincides with the main relative sea-level rise. Instead, during the following falling stage, the seafloor, consisting of the Cretaceous carbonate, was in the wave abrasion zone and the pelagic carbonate mud was swept away or trapped in local depressions or fractures (neptunian dykes), whereas the coarse sediment produced by the erosion of indented and fractured substrate formed polygenic conglomerate accumulation on the Cretaceuos carbonate platform substrate. Successively, an isolated homoclinal ramp, the Guadagnolo Fm, Aquitanian to Serravallian in age, developed on the drowned fault-block platforms, suggesting that during Neogene the articulation of the substrate of the two fault-block platforms had to be limited to host the bioclastic sedimentation of the Guadagnolo Fm and to allow the development of a carbonate ramp depositional profile. The late Miocene is a crucial interval for global climate evolution as well as for the regional geodynamic evolution of the Central Mediterranean area. It spans the transition from the warm Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum, associated with the major Monterey Carbon Isotope Excursion, to the cooler Pliocene, characterized by a bipolar glaciation. Within this climatic transition, during the early Tortonian, a positive carbon isotope excursion related to a global carbon cycle perturbation is recorded, named Carbon Maximum 7 (CM7). In this study, two upper Serravallian–lower Tortonian carbonate ramps of the Central Mediterranean have been analysed: the Latium‐Abruzzi and the Apula ramps (Central Apennines, Central Italy). Carbon isotope ratios have been coupled with facies and microfacies analyses with the aims: (1) to identify the CM7 in the Central Mediterranean carbonate ramp successions; (2) to evaluate potential carbonate factory changes or demises related to the CM7; and (3) to discriminate the role of global vs regional factors in affecting the Mediterranean carbonate ramps. The two studied ramps show different evolutions due to regional geodynamics causes. The Latium‐Abruzzi ramp drowns in the Tortonian, while the Apula shows a regressive trend, with upper Tortonian middle ramp facies overlying the lower Tortonian outer ramp. Despite the complex geodynamic setting, a positive carbon isotope shift has been identified in both ramps and correlated with the CM7. This positive carbon isotope shift may be linked to the strengthening of the global ocean circulation during the late Miocene cooling. This strengthening of the circulation enhanced the coastal upwelling, bringing nutrient‐rich waters to the surface and triggering an enhanced primary productivity consistent with the CM7. The drowning of carbonate platforms is a fascinating topic because it may be induced by several concomitant factors. A key setting to investigate carbonate platform drowning is a foreland basin. The Nummulitic Limestone ramp developed in the foreland of the western Alps during the Bartonian, while the Lithothamnion and Bryozoan Limestone ramp deposited in the foreland of the central Apennines between the Burdigalian and Serravallian. The drowning of Nummulitic Limestone is related to the reduction in light for the photo‐dependent biota according to the progressively increasing depth and poor efficiency of aphotic carbonate factory. The drowning of the Lithothamnion and Bryozoan Limestone ramp is attributed to the deterioration of the environmental conditions that predate tectonic subsidence related to the Apennine orogenesis. Eutrophication triggered by upwelling events induced a crisis in the shallow‐water carbonate production, while during the following tectonic subsidence the shallow‐water carbonate factory was definitively inactive. This work illustrates the evolution the Lower Jurassic shallow-water carbonates known as the Calcare Massiccio Formation in the Central Apennines (Italy). The Calcare Massiccio is characterized by lateral and vertical variability in the facies associations, related to an articulated physiography of the Triassic to Lower Jurassic carbonate platform and to its tectonic evolution. This work documents the depositional environment changes during the platform evolution. Quantitative analysis on samples collected from three stratigraphic sections were performed through the Calcare Massiccio succession allowed up to the overlying Pliensbachian pelagites. Two type of carbonate sedimentation have been recognized: in the peritidal and shallow subtidal environments (Calcare Massiccio A) the carbonate production is dominated by microbial activity, while the carbonate sedimentation in a deeper environment of middle to outer ramp (Calcare Massiccio B), is dominated by a bioclastic sedimentation. The evolution from the Calcare Massiccio A to the B can be interpreted as the product of increase of accommodation that in turn produced a backstepping of carbonate facies belt, the photic microbial dominated peritidal facies developed on the persistent Latium-Abruzzi Platform while the bioclastic carbonate production factory settled on the structural highs resulting from the dismembering of the platform by syn-sedimentary tectonic. The bioclastic carbonate factory was not efficient in filling the available accommodation space produced by Sinemurian extensional tectonic. This inefficiency was amplified by the restricted area available for this factory in the small structural highs. The stratigraphic architecture of the Bolognano Formation documents the evolution of the Majella carbonate platform in response to global and local changes that affected the Mediterranean area during the Oligocene–Miocene interval. The Bolognano Formation consists of a homoclinal ramp that developed in a warm, subtropical environment. Five different lithofacies associations have been identified: Lepidocyclina calcarenites, cherty marly limestones, bryozon calcarenites, hemipelagic marls and marly limestones, and Lithothamnion limestones. Each association corresponds to a single lithostratigraphic unit except for the Lepidocyclina calcarenites that form two distinct lithostratigraphic units ( Lepidocyclina calcarenites 1 and 2). These six units reflect alternation of shallow-water carbonate production and drowning. Specifically, two of the three stages of shallow-water carbonate production regard the development of wide dune fields within the middle ramp, one stage dominated by red algae and a sea-grass carbonate factory, whereas the two drowning phases are represented by marly cherty limestones and calcareous marls. A new biostratigraphic framework for Bolognano Formation is presented, based on high-resolution analysis of calcareous nannofossil assemblages, which proved to be very useful for biostratigraphic constraints also in shallow-water settings. Using this approach, we have linked the first drowning phase, late Chattian–Aquitanian p.p. in age, to western Mediterranean volcanism and the Mi-1 event, and the second drowning phase, late Burdigalian–Serravallian in age, to the closure of the Indo-Pacific passage and the occurrence of the global Monterey event. These results permit a new deciphering, in terms of sequence stratigraphy, of the Bolognano Formation that is interpreted as a 2nd-order super-sequence that can be subdivided into 3 transgressive–regressive sequences. This paper shows the environmental changes and high-frequency cyclicity recorded by Lower Jurassic shallow-water carbonates known as the Calcare Massiccio Formation which crop out in the central Apennines of Italy. Three types of sedimentary cycle bounded by subaerial erosion have been recognized: Type I consists of a shallowing upward cycle with oncoidal floatstones to rudstones passing gradationally up into peloidal packstone alternating with cryptoalgal laminites and often bounded by desiccation cracks and pisolitic-peloidal wackestones indicating a period of subaerial exposure. Type II shows a symmetrical trend in terms of facies arrangement with peloidal packstones and cryptoalgal laminites present both at the base and in the upper portion of the cycle, separated by oncoidal floatstones to rudstones. Type III displays a shallowing upward trend with an initial erosion surface overlain by oncoidal floatstones to rudstones that, in turn, are capped by pisolitic-peloidal wackestones and desiccation sheet cracks. Sheet cracks at the top of cycles formed during the initial phase of subaerial exposure were successively enlarged by dissolution during prolonged subaerial exposure. The following sea-level fall produced dissolution cavities in subtidal facies, while the successive sea-level rise resulted in the precipitation of marine cements in dissolution cavities. Spectral analysis revealed six peaks, five of which are consistent with orbital cycles. While a tectonic control cannot be disregarded, the main signal recorded by the sedimentary succession points toward a main control related to orbital forcing. Terra Nova, 00, 1–7, 2010 The C-isotope composition of a Miocene carbonate succession from the Latium-Abruzzi sector of the Central Apennines was studied to evaluate the influence of local vs . global factors in changing δ13C. We propose that the Oligo-Miocene igneous activity of the Western Mediterranean and the closure of the Indo-Pacific connection influenced climate change and Mediterranean sea-water circulation. The huge Aquitanian–Burdigalian volcanic activity during the formation of the Ligurian–Provençal Basin, with related increase in atmospheric CO2, may have accelerated weathering and hydrological cycling of nutrient inputs in coastal environments. The closure of the Indo-Pacific connection altered the circulation by changing and reversing the western exchange flow. The existence of warm and seasonally humid climate favoured the development of estuarine circulation, which was to lead to a dramatic increase in productivity in the euphotic zone. ABSTRACT In the western part of the central Apennines, Lower–Middle Miocene carbonates were deposited on a tropical–subtropical carbonate ramp. They record two long-term cycles, the first of which is illustrated in this paper. Between 21 and 17.5 Ma, Miocene carbonates, paraconformably overlying the Cretaceous limestones, record a transgressive event during a time of global (2nd order) sea-level lowstand. It is postulated that this deviation is related to an increase in tectonic subsidence. Between 17.5 Ma and 16–15 Ma, with a progressive relative sea-level rise, the inner–middle ramp facies belt stepped back, whereas the bryozoan-dominated outer ramp facies belt stepped back but simultaneously prograded. This bloom of suspension-feeding organisms is interpreted to reflect an increased nutrient availability, hence a change from oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. Strontium-isotope dates constrain correlation of the second phase with a eutrophic event possibly linked to the influence of the neighbouring Apenninic accretionary wedge and foredeep system. The stratigraphic evolution of the Guadagnolo Fm, developed on the transition between the Latium-Abruzzi Platform and the Umbria Sabina Basin (central Apennines), was studied through facies and stable isotope analysis. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy allows to identify the Burdigalian-Langhian boundary, constraining the sections to the lower to middle Miocene. This interval consists of marly deposits forming the intermediate member of the formation dominated by sponge spicules, molluscs, bryozoans, benthic and planktonic foraminifers. This member is deposited in a distal outer ramp where the abundance of siliceous sponges has been attributed to the high seawater fertility coinciding with the Monterey event, enhanced by regional nutrient flux due to continental runoff and volcanism. The upper member is Serravallian and consists of bryozoan-dominated cross-bedded calcarenites deposited in a shallower environment of the outer ramp. A positive carbon isotope excursion was correlated with the Monterey event recorded in the Central Apennines carbonate ramps and from ODP sites. Five carbon maxima belonging to the Monterey Carbon Isotope Excursion have been identified. Four carbon isotope peaks fall in the spongolitic member, one in the upper member. The Carbon Maxima recorded within the spongolitic member show an attenuate isotope excursion compared with the pelagic and the carbonate platforms record. The weaker signal is due to the fractionation effect of primary producers of the photic zone and to the sponge release of 12C-enriched CO 2 deriving from the oxidation of organic matter. Conversely, the largest positive carbon isotope excursion is recorded in the upper member, representative of a shallower environment, and it is due to the absence of sponges and the increased contribution of photosynthetic biota. The Eocene-Oligocene transition represents the latest greenhouse-icehouse shift faced by Earth, a major global climate change associated with carbon cycle perturbation. In this paper, we investigate the Massignano stratigraphic section (northern Apennines, Italy), GSSP of the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, by X-ray diffraction analysis of clay minerals and carbon and oxygen stable isotopes to explore the link among climate, paleoweathering and runoff, and carbon cycle in the Neotethys across this major climatic transition. We examine the interplay between global climate forcing and orogen evolution controlling the Massignano hemipelagic sedimentation. The late Eocene clay mineral assemblages indicate that the Neotethys was sensitive to global eustatic changes as well as changes in composition and rates of weathered sediments accumulating into the basin. The carbon isotope record matches with the global signal, showing productivity pulses linked to cooling phases and sea-level drops before 34.8 Ma. Subsequently, a constant negative trend is recorded, which is consistent with the global carbon isotope curve, and attests for a decrease of primary productivity linked to decreasing atmospheric CO 2. This negative trend ends at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, when the onset of the global carbon isotope positive excursion is recorded also within the Massignano hemipelagic succession. On the contrary, the clay mineral assemblage is quite constant across the Eocene-Oligocene boundary reflecting the complex interplay among fluvial discharge, sea level changes and orogen dynamics which clouded the global climate shift. In this context, the enhanced fluvial discharge likely contributed to sustain high trophic conditions in the Adriatic waters and, in turn, the Oligocene positive carbon isotope shift. These results highlight how clay minerals proved to be a useful proxy to identify the interplay between global and regional controlling factors on hemipelagic sedimentation and, their integration with the carbon isotope record, provides insights into carbon cycle dynamics. • Clay minerals reflect climate variations in the Alpine area during the Late Eocene. • Clay minerals reflect the interplay between climate and Alpine evolution across the EOT. • δ13C record of Massignano GSSP matches with the global curve. • The late Priabonian negative δ13C trend indicates atmospheric CO 2 lowering. • Marine productivity pulses are linked to cooling phases in the early Priabonian. Abstract: Analyses of facies associations and biotic assemblages integrated with backstripping analysis are presented to improve understanding of the development of a shallow water Miocene carbonate ramp in the Central Apennines (Italy), with special reference to the relationships between tectonic subsidence and the internal architecture of the ramp. Subsidence curves were calculated for six measured sections located in different sectors of the platform. Dating is derived from Sr isotope analyses (from previous studies) and regional correlations. Corrections for eustasy and paleobathymetry were deduced from biota and facies analyses. The subsidence curves show rates that vary both in space and time. By analysing the vertical motions in different sectors of the ramp over a fixed time span (Burdigalian to Tortonian), it was possible to evaluate the control on platform architecture exerted by tectonically induced changes in sea-floor bathymetry and highlight the effects of tectonic migration. Most analysed sites experienced a short period of tectonic uplift or stability followed by a period of slow subsidence. This preceded increased subsidence which resulted in drowning of the shallow-water carbonate platform. The stability/uplift is progressively younger towards the north-eastern sectors that correspond to progressively more external zones of the foreland relative to the Apenninic orogenic belt. The subsequent drowning is related to the diachronous down-flexure of the Adriatic lithosphere due to its eastward retreating subduction under the Apennines. The small magnitude of the uplift suggests that the formation of a foreland bulge due to subduction-related flexure of the Adriatic plate was probably not the responsible mechanism. Hence, this uplift is related to the development of proto-thrusts or to the propagation of compressive stresses in the foreland. These vertical motions influenced the geometry of the platform during the 17.5–16 Ma stage. During this period the platform was characterised by exceptional progradation of the bryomol-dominated proximal outer ramp facies belt. This rapid spreading may be induced by the combined effect of increased eutrophic conditions and a contemporaneous decrease in the sea-floor bathymetry resulting from the tectonic uplift. From the Tortonian onwards, when the platform became involved in the eastward migrating foredeep system, the tectonic subsidence curve records a short period of fast tectonic subsidence rates followed by a period of slow subsidence or slight uplift during basin drowning and infilling, respectively.
