Taking advantage of the Polar Amplification Model Intercomparison Project simulations and using a Lagrangian objective feature tracking algorithm, we determine the response of extratropical cyclones to sea‐ice loss and consequent weakening of the equator‐to‐pole near‐surface temperature gradient. The wintertime storm tracks are found to shift equatorward in the North Atlantic and over Europe, and eastward in the North Pacific. In both regions, cyclones become weaker and slower, particularly on the poleward flank of the storm tracks. On average, there are fewer individual cyclones in the extratropics each winter, they last longer, are weaker, and travel more slowly. These changes are greatest over the Arctic, but still statistically significant in midlatitudes despite being small compared to internal variability. Inter‐model spread in cyclone responses are not strongly correlated with that in Arctic warming or Arctic amplification. Little change in summertime cyclones is found. Plain Language Summary: Using identically performed experiments from eight different climate models, we study how low pressure systems, known as cyclones or storms, may change as Arctic sea ice diminishes. An algorithm is used to identify the weather systems and track them across their lifecycle. In the wintertime, the typical path of storms over the Atlantic Ocean shifts southward toward the equator. Over the Pacific, the storm tracks shifts toward North America. Arctic sea‐ice loss causes there to be fewer storms each winter across the northern midlatitudes, and these tend to be weaker, slower moving, but longer lasting. These changes are largest over the Arctic itself but also found over mid‐latitudes. These changes may be important because the number, location, and character of storms control the winter weather over Europe, North America and Asia. In the summertime, we did not find any detectable impact of Arctic sea‐ice loss on storms. We present a tracking algorithm for synoptic to meso-a-scale Arctic cyclones that differentiates between cold- and warm-core systems. The algorithm is applied to the ERA5 reanalysis north of 608N from 1950 to 2019. In this dataset, over one-half of the cyclones that meet minimum intensity and duration thresholds can be classified as cold-core systems. Systems that undergo transition, typically from cold to warm core, make up 27.2% of cyclones and are longer lived. The relatively infrequent warm-core cyclones are more intense and are most common in winter. The Arctic-wide occurrence of maritime cyclones has increased from 1979 to 2019 when compared with the period from 1950 to 1978, but the trends have high interannual variability. This shift has ramifications for transportation, fisheries, and extractive industries, as well as impacts on communities across the Arctic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new algorithm for estimating sea ice age (SIA) distribution based on the Eulerian advection scheme is presented. The advection scheme accounts for the observed divergence or convergence and freezing or melting of sea ice and predicts consequent generation or loss of new ice. The algorithm uses daily gridded sea ice drift and sea ice concentration products from the Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility. The major advantage of the new algorithm is the ability to generate individual ice age fractions in each pixel of the output product or, in other words, to provide a frequency distribution of the ice age allowing to apply mean, median, weighted average or other statistical measures. Comparison with the National Snow and Ice Data Center SIA product revealed several improvements of the new SIA maps and time series. First, the application of the Eulerian scheme provides smooth distribution of the ice age parameters and prevents product undersampling which may occur when a Lagrangian tracking approach is used. Second, utilization of the new sea ice drift product void of artifacts from EUMETSAT OSI SAF resulted in more accurate and reliable spatial distribution of ice age fractions. Third, constraining SIA computations by the observed sea ice concentration expectedly led to considerable reduction of multi-year ice (MYI) fractions. For regional environmental studies it is important to know the location of the fast ice edge which affects the coastal processes in the Arctic. The aim of this study is to develop a new automated method for fast ice delineation from SAR imagery. The method is based on a fine resolution hybrid sea ice tracking algorithm utilizing advantages of feature tracking and cross-correlation approaches. The developed method consists of three main steps: drift field retrieval at sub-kilometer scale, selection of motionless features and edge delineation. The method was tested on a time series of C-band co-polarized (HH) ENVISAT ASAR and Sentinel-1 imagery in the Laptev and East Siberian Seas. The comparison of the retrieved edges with the operational ice charts produced by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (Russia) showed a good agreement between the data sets with a mean distance between the edges of <15 km. Thanks to the high density of the ice drift product, the method allows for detailed fast ice edge delineation. In addition, large stamukhas with horizontal size of tens of kilometers can be detected. The proposed method can be applied for regional fast ice mapping and large stamukhas detection to aid coastal research. Additionally, the method can serve as a tool for operational sea ice mapping.
