Mining activities can cause adverse and long-lasting environmental impacts and detailed monitoring is therefore essential to assess the pollution status of mining impacted areas. Here we evaluated the efficacy of two predatory fish species (Gadus ogac i.e. Greenland cod and Myoxocephalus scorpius i.e. shorthorn sculpin) as biomonitors of mining derived metals (Pb, Zn, Cd and Hg) by measuring concentrations in blood, liver, muscle and otoliths along a distance gradient near the former Black Angel Pb-Zn mine (West Greenland). We detected metals in all tissues (except Cd and Hg in otoliths) and sculpin generally displayed higher concentrations than cod. For both species, concentrations were generally highest closest to the dominant pollution source(s) and gradually decreased away from the mine. The clearest gradient was observed for Pb in blood and liver (both species), and for Pb in otoliths (sculpin only). Similar to dissolved concentrations in seawater (but in contrast to bottom sediment), no significant decrease was found for Zn, Cd and Hg in any of the tissues. This demonstrates that by including tissues of blood (representing recent accumulation) and otolith (representing more long-term exposure signals) in the sampling collection, the temporal information on contaminant exposure and accumulation can be extended. We therefore conclude that both fish species are suitable as biomonitors near Arctic mine sites and, moreover, that blood and otoliths can serve as important supplementary monitoring tissues (in addition to liver and muscle traditionally sampled) as they provide extended temporal information on recent to long-term contaminant exposure., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no competing financial interest., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. To assess metals in biota of the Barents Sea, information is presented on concentrations of Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn in the marine inshore benthic invertebrates Gammarus oceanicus, Littorina rudis, Nucella lapillus, Mytilus edulis and Arenicola marina collected in summer 1994. For geographical comparisons, the metal content to body size relationship was taken into account due to the different body sizes found at the localities investigated. In general, our data provide further evidence for the cadmium anomaly in invertebrates from polar waters which has been frequently discussed in the literature, with Cd concentrations reaching 1 mg x kg(-1) dry wt in G. oceanicus, 7 mg x kg(-1) in L. rudis and 24 mg x kg(-1) in N. lapillus. In contrast, our results obtained for Cd in M. edulis and A. marina are largely within a world-wide reported range (1-2 and 0.2-0.9 mg x kg(-1), respectively). Although some severe Ni emissions in the Kola region (Russia) mainly from nickel smelters have been reported, we do not find indications of an enhanced Ni availability in the marine biota studied compared to other areas

We determined concentrations of selected trace elements in livers, kidneys and blood samples from common eiders (Somateria mollissima borealis) from the eastern Canadian arctic during 1997 and 1998. Concentrations of total mercury and organic mercury were generally low in the livers of these birds (less than 6 and 4 microg g(-1) dry wt, respectively). Selenium ranged between 11-47 microg g(-1) in livers. Renal cadmium concentrations were among the highest ever published for this species (range: 47-281 microg g(-1)). The regressions of log-transformed concentrations of these trace elements in blood samples on those in liver or kidney were significant (all P-values < 0.05) and positive. However, except for organic mercury (R2 = 0.83), the co-efficients of determination were low to moderate (range of R2: 0.26-0.52), suggesting poor to moderate predictive capability. Furthermore, the relationships between total mercury in blood and liver changed between 1997 and 1998, suggesting that it would not be possible to predict consistently, concentrations of mercury in blood from those in liver based on samples taken in one year. Blood samples can be used to determine concentrations of these trace elements in common eiders (and probably other sea duck species as well). The use of blood samples is especially warranted when it is undesirable to kill the animal such as when working with rare or endangered sea duck species or when the objective is to relate trace element exposure to annual survival rates. However, the predictive equations developed here should not be used to predict expected concentrations in one type of tissue from those in the other.

Within the period from 1989 to 1993, the impact of heavy metals and acid oxides on lakes, more than 100 km distant from the nearest source of pollution (enterprises of the copper-nickel industry), has been investigated. On the basis of complex investigations (chemical composition of snowpack and lake sediments, state of fish organisms and populations), it was discovered that there is intensive precipitation of heavy metals and acid oxides within the catchment of the lake Kochejavr. The catchment is characterized by a natural buffer capacity to neutralize acid precipitation. Active accumulation of heavy metals is observed in lake sediments. Metal accumulation causes subtoxic effects on the lake fish. The levels of precipitation of nickel and copper of 0.9 mg/m2 per year over long periods was found to be dangerous for biological systems of freshwater catchments.

The current state of knowledge of levels, spatial and temporal trends of contaminants in the Arctic marine ecosystem varies greatly among pollutants and among environmental compartments. Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine (OC) pesticides and some heavy metals such as mercury and lead, in Arctic marine mammals and fish are relatively well documented because of the need for comparisons with biota in more polluted environments and interest in the contamination of native diets. Levels of heavy metals, alkanes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and OCs in the Arctic Ocean are comparable to uncontaminated ocean waters in the mid-latitudes. But concentrations of alpha- and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) are higher in northern waters far removed from local sources, possibly because lower water temperature reduces transfer to the atmosphere. Bioaccumulation of OCs and heavy metals in Arctic marine food chains begins with epontic ice algae or phytoplankton in surface waters. Polychlorinated camphenes (PCC), PCBs, DDT- and chlordane-related compounds are the major OCs in marine fish, mammals and seabirds. Mean concentrations of most PCBs and OC pesticides in ringed seal (Phoca hispida) and polar bear (Ursus maritimus) populations in the Canadian Arctic are quite similar indicating a uniform geographic distribution of contamination, although alpha-HCH showed a distinct latitudinal gradient in bears due to higher levels in zones influenced by continental runoff. Ringed seals from Spitzbergen have higher levels of PCBs, total DDT and polychlorinated dioxins/furans (PCDD/PCDFs). In contrast to other OCs, PCDD/PCDFs in Canadian Arctic ringed seals and polar bears were higher in the east/central Arctic than at more southerly locations. Remarkably high cadmium levels are found in kidney and liver of narwhal (Monodons monoceros) from western Baffin Bay (mean of 63.5 micrograms g-1) and western Greenland waters (median of 39.5 micrograms g-1). Mercury concentrations in muscle of ringed seal and cetaceans frequently exceed 0.5 microgram g-1 especially in older animals. Cadmium concentrations in polar bear liver increased from west to east, while mercury levels were higher in ringed seals from the western Canadian Arctic, which suggests that natural sources of these metals predominate. Studies of temporal trends in OCs in ringed seals and seabirds in the Canadian Arctic indicate PCB and DDT levels declined significantly from the early 1970s to the 1980s. There is a lack of temporal trend data for other OC pesticides as well as for heavy metals and hydrocarbons.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
