Self-injurious behavior is considered a serious public health problem; however there are little statistics and empirical research in Argentina. In this work, we sought to know personal and contextual aspects of adolescents with self-injurious behavior from a clinical sample made up of subjects admitted to a mental health program in a municipality in the province of Buenos Aires. Discovery: ages lower than expected (13.3% between 6 and 11 years); predominance of the female sex (79.44%); high prevalence of adverse events such as child and adolescent abuse (86%); family problems (90%) and socio-economic vulnerability (55%); cuts as the predominant type of self-injurious behavior; limited therapeutic adherence; and self-injurious behavior sustained mainly by negative intrapersonal reinforcement (consistent with the explanatory model of emotional regulation). The findings are analyzed from a critical epidemiology perspective. The production of information regarding this problem is relevant insofar as it allows generating a diagnosis after which to produce appropriate public health responses. The lack of information contributes to the support of beliefs that naturalize the appearance of self-injurious behavior in adolescents, particularly in women, and generates prejudices regarding the motivations behind self-injurious actions. ALCOHOL drinking , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *POPULATION health , *OBESITY , *LIFESTYLES - Abstract
The article presents the study of the relationship between individual health status and its determinants through the application of logistic regressions to the data from the four National Surveys of Risk Factors (ENFR) in Argentina, using the health production function as a theoretical framework. Special emphasis was placed on lifestyles as they have the greatest influence on health. The analysis of the temporal evolution shows an increase in both obesity and alcohol consumption, highlighting the need to intensify public strategies that encourage less risky lifestyles in order to improve the health of the population. - Abstract
Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis that is widely distributed in the world. Although it is endemic in Argentina, prevalence remains unknown. The aims of the study were: (i) to determine the prevalence of leptospirosis in humans from a rural community in Tandil Argentina, (ii) to identify infecting Leptospira spp. serogroups, (iii) to identify factors associated with the infection, (iv) to estimate the population attributable fraction (PAF) of the risk factors and (v) to determine the spatial patterns of disease presentation and related risk factors. Blood samples from 202 participants were collected. A survey was conducted to obtain clinical and epidemiological data. Serological testing was performed by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Univariate and multivariate methods were applied to evaluate associations. Spatial clusters were investigated for seroprevalence and risk factors. Antibodies were found in 32.2% of participants (95% CI: 25.8-39.1). The most prevalent serogroup was Hebdomadis followed by Sejroe; Icterohaemorrhagiae; Tarassovi and Canicola. Living at lower altitudes (OR: 13.04; 95% CI: 2.60-65.32); not having access to water supply network (OR: 2.95; 95% CI: 1.30-6.69); living close to flooded streets (OR: 2.94; 95% CI: 1.14-7.69) and practicing water sports (OR: 3.12; 95% CI: 1.12-8.33) were associated with seropositivity. Factors related with housing characteristics, services and infrastructure had the higher PAF (from 17% to 81%). A spatial cluster with higher rates of positivity and of the main risk factors was determined. This work contributes useful data for specific preventive measures that should be implemented for the control of the disease., (Copyright © 2022 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. ALCOHOLISM risk factors , *ALCOHOL drinking , *SCIENTIFIC observation , *REPEATED measures design , *CROSS-sectional method , *DESCRIPTIVE statistics , *PREGNANCY - Abstract
Objective. Describe alcohol consumption by Argentine women before and during pregnancy and identify the factors associated with consumption- and pregnancy-related changes. Methods. Cross-sectional observational study. Women were interviewed after giving birth and receiving care at two perinatal health care centers in Santa Fe, Argentina. Sociodemographic information, data on their alcohol use, and other information were obtained from the participants. A descriptive analysis of consumption prevalence rates was made and the factors associated with patterns of alcohol use were identified by means of repeated measure analysis. Results. Of the 614 participants, 75.2% had had at least one alcoholic drink (standard unit) during pregnancy and 83.3% had done so in the previous year; 15.1% admitted having at least one episode of binge drinking (five or more drinks) during pregnancy and 27.6% in the year prior to pregnancy. Only 30.6% of the women said they had made any change in consumption during the previous year; of those, 55.6% reduced their consumption and 41.8% stopped drinking. Women who consumed the most alcohol before and during pregnancy reported higher consumption by their partners, smoked, and had more permissive attitudes about alcohol use during pregnancy. Conclusions. A specific prevention plan is required in Argentina to reduce alcohol use in pregnant women, adjusted to local patterns of use, with interventions that include couples, and focused on the youngest women, those who use tobacco, and those who have more permissive attitudes about alcohol use. This study examines the social risk and protection factors for excessive alcohol use, based on the data from the "National Survey on the prevalence of substance abuse in 2008", in a population of young Argentines, from 16 to 24 years of age. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used. The following risk factors were observed: age at onset (the younger, the higher the risk); the Pampas region, Northwest and Northeast; males; from families with unsatisfied basic needs. Protective factors include idleness, no opportunity to try out illicit drugs, not being tempted to experiment with illicit drugs and no previous use of tobacco, or tranquilizers, or cocaine or cocaine-based substances in the lifetime. The results provide useful information to develop prevention programs for adolescents and young people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CARDIOVASCULAR diseases risk factors , *MEDICAL care costs , *HOSPITAL care , *HEART diseases , *CEREBROVASCULAR disease - Abstract
Objective. Estimate the burden of disease, the proportion attributable to the principal modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, and the direct medical cost of hospitalization associated with coronary heart disease and stroke in Argentina. Methodology. An analitical model was prepared using Argentina's 2005 mortality data and the prevalence of the principal cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, overweight, obesity, hyperglycemia, current and past smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables). The burden of disease--years of potential life lost (YPLL) and years of healthy life lost (YHLL)--and hospitalization costs for the cardiovascular diseases analyzed were estimated. Results. In 2005 over 600 000 YHL were lost in Argentina and the number of YPLL due to heart disease and stroke was calculated at 400 000; 71.1% of the YHLL, 73.9% of the YPLL, and 76.0% of the associated costs were attributable to modifiable risk factors. Hypertension was the risk factor with the greatest impact in both men and in women, responsible for 37.3% of the total cost, 37.5% of the YPLL, and 36.6% of the YHLL. Conclusions. Most of the burden of disease from cardiovascular disease in Argentina is associated with modifiable, and therefore preventable, risk factors and could be reduced through population-based and clinical interventions that employ a risk approach; such interventions have already proven to be cost effective, accessible, and feasible in countries like Argentina. DISEASE prevalence , *METABOLIC syndrome , *LIFESTYLES , *ADOLESCENT obesity , *DISEASES in teenagers - Abstract
Objectives. To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adolescents in a city in Argentina and to establish its association with certain risk factors linked to life style. Methods. Cross-sectional study of a representative sample of 532 middle and high school students from 11-20 years of age (mean: 15.3 years; females: 60%) in the city of Posadas, province of Misiones, Argentina, from July-October 2005. Surveys were conducted of individuals' dietary habits, anthropometric measurements, sedentary levels, blood pressure readings, and laboratory results. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed if three or more of the following conditions were present: fasting glucose ≥ 110 mg/dL; triglycerides ≥ 110 mg/dL; HDL cholesterol ≤ 40 mg/dL; arterial systolic or diastolic pressure > 90th percentile; and waist circumference > 90th percentile. Results. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 4.5%; significantly higher among males than among females (7.5% vs. 2.5%; P = 0.006) and among the 15-20 year old age group than among the 11-14 year old group (6.3% vs. 2.5%; P = 0.037). Of the adolescents, 44.7% had one or more components of metabolic syndrome. The risk of metabolic syndrome among obese adolescents was elevated (odds ratio = 119.73; 95% confidence interval: 27.6-519.41). Dietary habits and frequency of food consumption were similar among students with and without metabolic syndrome; however, the first group consumed fattening foods more frequently. Of all the adolescents in the sample, 84.8% were sedentary (100% of those with metabolic syndrome). Conclusions. In the city of Posadas, some 1 400 students suffer from metabolic syndrome and about 13 000 have at least one metabolic syndrome component. Joint efforts by the state government and the community are needed to change dietary habits and increase physical activity, mainly among boys, those 15-20 years of age, and the obese, to reverse the situation and reduce the morbidity/mortality that results from metabolic syndrome. - Abstract
Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is one of the causative agents of respiratory disease in cattle all over the world, leading to important economic losses. The aim of this work was to determine the seroprevalence of BRSV in feedlot cattle of Argentina and the risk factors associated with the disease. Results showed a high individual seroprevalence of 78.64% (95% confidence interval adjusted [CI]=66.55-90.75%) against the virus. Positive association was found between the presence of high BRSV neutralizing antibody titers, and the following risk factors: cattle age, source of animals, presence of clinical respiratory signs and herd size. This work contributes to updating the understanding of its epidemiology in Argentinean feedlots and poses the need for reevaluating vaccination strategies against this virus in order to control infection and its impact on productivity., (Copyright © 2017 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología.
