The known diversity of the genus Liolaemus continues to increase, principally due to its great degree of endemism, the increasing number of researchers working on it, and advances in the taxonomic and phylogenetic knowledge of the genus. This diversity positions Liolaemus as the second most species-rich tetrapod genus. The present work adds to evidence for the great diversity of Liolaemus through the description of two new species, endemic to saline environments in the Argentinian Puna. Both species are members of the Liolaemus montanus group within the subgenus Eulaemus. To determine the taxonomic status of these lizards, we used integrative taxonomy as a tool, incorporating phylogenetic, morphological, and molecular genetic evidence, as well as the anatomy of hemipenes, statistical morphological analysis, and ecological characteristics. Our analyses supported the conclusion that both sampled populations of lizards are species new to science. One of these is found along the margins of the Antofalla salt flats in the Catamarca Province and the Hombre Muerto salt flats in the Salta Province. The other new species inhabits saline habitats vegetated by Lycium humile, principally between the salt crusts of the Antofalla salt flats. Both species are small to medium sized and can be distinguished from all other species of the L. montanus group by unique combinations of morphological characters, primarily pholidosis and dorsal and ventral colour patterns. Palaeoecological reconstructions document past vegetation distribution with estimates of the communities boundaries shifts. This work presents a compilation of palaeoecological studies from southern Patagonia Argentina as a contribution to a better understanding of the composition and distribution of Andean and extra-Andean plant communities. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions are based on pollen sequences from different types of deposits located in the forest, forest-steppe ecotone and steppes between 46° and 51°S. The comprehension of modern pollen and its relation with the actual vegetation is a critical component of palaeoecological research. Models of the current relationship pollen-vegetation-climate were applied to interpret these sequences. Their integration made it possible to reconstruct the spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation and past climatic changes since the Late Glacial-Holocene transition. Four areas were selected to map past vegetation communities; three lake basins: Pueyrredón, San Martín and Argentino, and the Deseado Massif. The local conditions given by the geomorphology of each site were also taken into account. The vegetation reconstruction during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition came from records located in the Deseado Massif only, and indicated steppes, without modern analogues, linked to arid and cold conditions. During the Holocene, plant communities were sensitive to moisture conditions related to westerly winds or Atlantic-derived precipitation events. Trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease that has been studied mainly in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The cycle involves infection in domestic and wild fauna, which fulfill complex ecological roles, where Trichinella spiralis is reported in wild boar (Sus scrofa). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of trichinellosis in wild boar and evaluate the distance of positive animals to the nearest urbanization areas in Argentina Patagonia. Necropsies were carried out on wild boar hunted in the Nahuel Huapi and Lanín National Parks and surrounding areas. Skeletal muscle samples were collected from 1,694 wild boar and artificial digestion was performed on all samples. Trichinella spp. were found in 96 (5.8%) wild boar (0.2 to 424 Larvae/g). Parasitism in wild boar depends on the distribution of the population in natural and urban areas. Infected wild boar were found near peri-urban areas, demonstrating the importance of routine epidemiological surveillance and sanitary measures in and around cities. More research is needed to identify the Trichinella species that infect wild animals. We recommend the application of active and passive epidemiological surveillance in South America on exotic and native fauna that are hunted and consumed by humans.

Background: Immunosuppressive therapies as azathioprine (AZA), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and rituximab (RTX) are widely prescribed as first-line treatment to prevent relapses in NMOSD. However, the rate of response to these traditional therapies is unknown in Argentina. We aimed to describe and compare treatment failure rates in NMOSD patients included in the Argentinean MS and NMOSD registry (RelevarEM, NCT03375177)., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in NMOSD patients included in RelevarEM (a nationwide, longitudinal, observational, non-mandatory registry of MS and NMOSD in Argentina). NMOSD patients were defined based on validate diagnostic criteria. Only NMOSD patients who received AZA or MMF for at least 6 months or RTX for at least 1 month were included. Patients who were receiving AZA, MMF, or RTX and then switched to another 1 of these 3 therapies were included if the above-mentioned criteria for each drug were fulfilled. Data on patient demographics, clinical, neuroradiological findings, and treatments administered were collected. Treatment failure was defined as any new attack/relapse that occurred despite immunosuppressive treatment., Results: We included 139 NMOSD patients who were receiving AZA (n = 105), MMF (n = 5) or RTX (n = 29) with a mean follow-up time of 41.3 ± 11.4 months and median of EDSS at treatment initiation of 3. We observed a reduction in the annualized relapse rate from pre-treatment to post-treatment of 51.1 %, 48.4 %, and 79.1 % respectively with a Hazard Risk relative to RTX (95 % CI) of 1.67 (1.34-3.54, p = 0.01) for AZA and 2.01 (1.86-4.43, p = 0.008) for MMF. AZA, MMF and RTX failure was observed in 45/105 (42.8 %), 2/5 (40 %) and 3/29 (10.3 %) patients, respectively., Conclusions: Treatment failure rates were higher for AZA and MMF than RTX in Argentinean NMOSD patients in a real-world setting. Objective: The aim was to evaluate patient profiles, effectiveness and safety of cladribine (CLAD) in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in Argentina., Methods: This was a substudy included in RelevarEM (MS and neuromyelitis optica registry in Argentina, NCT03375177). Patients with MS who received CLAD tablets and were followed up for at least 24 months were included. Clinical evaluations every 3 months collect information about: a) clinical relapses; b) progression of physical disability, evaluated through Expanded Disability Status Scale, and c) new lesions found in the magnetic resonance imaging. Lymphopenia was evaluated during the follow-up and defined as grade 1: absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) 800-999/μL; grade 2: ALC 500-799/μL; grade 3: ALC 200-499/μL and grade 4: ALC <200/μL., Results: A total of 240 patients were included from 19 centers from Argentina. The mean annualized relapse rate during the 12-month pre-CLAD initiation was 1.19 ± 0.56 versus 0.22 ± 0.18 at month 12 and 0.19 ± 0.15 at month 24 ( P < 0.001). A total of 142 (59.2%) fulfilled the criteria of disease activity during the 12 months before treatment initiation, whereas 27 (11.3%) fulfilled it at month 12 and 38 (15.8%) at month 24, P < 0.001. Regarding no evidence of disease activity (NEDA), 202 (84.2%) patients achieved NEDA status at month 12 and 185 (77%) at month 24. The most frequent incidence density of lymphopenia for course 2 observed was also for grade 1, 6.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 5.5-7.1). Background: Knowledge of the safety and efficacy of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in older patients with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) is limited due to their exclusion from clinical trials. Our purpose is to evaluate the choice of DMTs in pwMS older than 50 years old in a real-world setting., Methods: Cross-sectional study of pwMS from the Argentine MS and NMOSD Registry. We included patients under 35 and above 50 years old prescribed DMTs. Disease activity was categorized as highly active (HA) or not highly active (NHA), and DMTs were classified as low efficacy therapies (LET) or high efficacy therapies (HET)., Results: 1460 patients (65% females) were enrolled. The HA group comprised 241 patients, 198 young (82.2%) and 43 older (17.8%). The NHA group included 1219 patients, 893 young (73%) and 326 older (27%). In the NHA group, older patients received LET more frequently than younger patients (66% versus 44%; p < 0.01). In the HA group, older patients received LET in 61% of cases, whereas younger patients received HET in 71% (p = 0.01)., Conclusion: The study shows the preference of LET in older patients regardless of disease activity. However it does not demonstrate a difference in disability in older patients based on low vs high efficacy DMTs used, probably due to the design of the study. This paper aims to describe a case of trombiculosis in llamas from the Puna region of Argentina caused by Eutrombicula cochinocaensis. Trombiculosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval form of trombiculid mites, commonly known as chigger mites. Six adult llamas out of eighteen (33%) were infested and showed dermatitis, hyperemia, and crusts together with an orange-dotted pattern. The chigger mites were found mainly in the hind limbs and the abdomen. Microscopic identification of E. cochinocaensis was made by phase-contrast microscopy. Then, a histopathological study of the affected animals' skin was performed. Histological findings included dermatitis withmainly lymphocytic infiltrate, pustules, crusts, hyperkeratosis, and the mites' stylostomes in the dermis and epidermis. This is the first report of trombiculosis caused by E. cochinocaensis in llamas from Argentina. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the burden of treatment (BOT) and the quality of life (QoL) in early high efficacy therapy (HET) vs. escalation therapy in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients included in RelevarEM, the Argentinean registry of MS (RelevarEM, NCT 03,375,177)., Methods: cross sectional study conducted between September and December 2022. Participating patients were adults, RRMS patients who initiated (during the last three years) their treatment with a HET (natalizumab, ocrelizumab, alemtuzumab, cladribine) or with escalation treatment (beta interferon, glatiramer acetate, teriflunomide, dimethyl fumarate or fingolimod). Clinical and demographic aspect were collected. QoL and BOT was measured with the validated to Spanish MusiQol and BOT questionnaire. Propensity score (PS)-based nearest-neighbor matching was applied to homogenize groups. Comparisons were be done using a linear regression analysis model stratified by matched pairs, with BOT and QoL assessments as main outcomes., Results: 269 patients were included in the analysis, mean age 33.7 ± 5.7 years, 193 (71.7 %) were female. A total of 136 patients were on early HET while 133 were on escalation therapy. In the entire group the mean total BOT score (±SD) was 48.5 ± 15.3 while in the group of patients receiving early HET we observed that the mean BOT score (±SD) was 43.5 ± 12.2 vs. 54.3 ± 13.3 in escalation treatment (p < 0.0001). Regarding the score QoL (±SD), in the entire sample we observed a global score of 77.4 ± 11.2. Argentina is a Latin American country which encounters soil degradation problems. The most productive regions have implemented conservative land practices (no-till). However, agricultural frontier has been displaced to marginal lands with arid and semiarid climates, with the consequent disappearance in many areas of native forest and land degradation. In this work, the fallout of gamma-emitting radionuclides, 137 Cs and 7 Be, was jointly used to assess changes in soil erosion in a recently converted semiarid ecosystem into agricultural land. 137 Cs was utilized to estimate the erosion over the past 60 years, whereas 7 Be was employed to estimate the erosion after the conversion of the area to cultivated land and soil tillage. For 137 Cs the Proportional Model (PM), the Mass Balance Model II (MBMII) and the MODERN model were used, for 7 Be the Profile Distribution Model (PDM) and the MODERN model were used. 137 Cs indicates mean erosional rates of 8.2, 10.5 and 6.5 Mg ha -1 a -1 , using MBMII, PM and MODERN, respectively, and that a soil layer between 0.5 and 0.8 mm was annually lost by erosion. By applying a 7 Be tracer, we measured erosion rates of 2.4 and 3.3 Mg ha -1 (with PDM and Modern, respectively), indicating the loss of the upper 0.2 mm of soil. This erosion can be attributed to a few heavy rainfalls that occurred within the past 90 days. The results suggest that current land management practices have led to an increase in soil erosion. This could be attributed to the fact that the soil remains bare after crop harvest, which may compromise its conservation and future productivity.

Background: Most Multiple Sclerosis (MS) clinical trials fail to assess the long-term effects of disease-modifying therapies (DMT) or disability., Methods: COLuMbus was a single-visit, cross-sectional study in Argentina in adult patients with ≥10 years of MS since first diagnosis. The primary endpoint was to determine patient disability using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). The secondary endpoints were to evaluate the distribution of diagnoses between relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS), patient demographics, disease history, and the risk of disability progression. The relationship between baseline characteristics and the current disability state and the risk of disability progression was assessed., Results: Out of the 210 patients included, 76.7 % had a diagnosis of RRMS and 23.3 % had been diagnosed with SPMS, with a mean disease duration of 17.9 years and 20.5 years, respectively. The mean delay in the initial MS diagnosis was 2.6 years for the RRMS subgroup and 2.8 years for the SPMS subgroups. At the time of cut-off (28May2020), 90.1 % (RRMS) and 75.5 % (SPMS) of patients were receiving a DMT, with a mean of 1.5 and 2.0 prior DMTs, respectively. The median EDSS scores were 2.5 (RRMS) and 6.5 (SPMS). We aimed to evaluate the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in people with MS (PwMS) on high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (HET) included in the national MS registry in Argentina (RelevarEM)., Methods: Non-interventional, retrospective cohort study that collected information directly from RelevarEM. Adult PwMS who had been treated for at least 6 months with a HET (ocrelizumab, natalizumab, alemtuzumab, cladribine) who had received at least two doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines available in Argentina were included. Full course of vaccination was considered after the second dose of the corresponding vaccines. Cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was reported for the whole cohort by Kaplan-Meier survival curves (which is expressed in percentage) as well as incidence density (which is expressed per 10.000 patients/day with 95% CI)., Results: Two hundred twenty-eight PwMS were included. Most frequent first and second dose received was AstraZeneca vaccine, followed by Sputnik vaccine. Most frequent HETs used in included patients were cladribine in 79 (34.8%). We found an incidence density of breakthrough COVID-19 infection of 3.5 × 10.000 patients/day (95% CI 2.3-6.7) after vaccination in Argentina. We described the incidence rate after vaccination for every HET used, it being significantly higher for ocrelizumab compared with other HETs (p = 0.005). Only five patients presented a relapse during the follow-up period with no differences regarding the pre-vaccination period., Conclusions: We found an incidence density of breakthrough COVID-19 infection of 3.5 × 10.000 patients/day (95% CI 2.3-6.7) after vaccination in Argentina., (© 2023. Background: Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in multiple sclerosis (MS) can be classified according to the efficacy in which they prevent inflammatory activity. To date, there are limited data regarding the use of high-efficacy treatments (HETs) in Latin America (LATAM). We aimed to analyze the use of HETs in Argentina, focusing on the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of the patients who use these treatments and the changes in the trend of use over the years., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was done using the Argentina MS patient registry, RelevarEM. Patients diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) according to validated diagnostic criteria and under treatment with natalizumab, alemtuzumab, cladribine, rituximab or ocrelizumab were included., Results: Out of 2450 RRMS patients under a DMT, 462 (19%) were on HETs. One third of those patients (35%) received HETs as the first treatment. The most frequent reason for switching to HETs was treatment failure to previous DMT (77%). The time from MS diagnosis to the first HET in treatment-naive patients was less than one year (IQR: 0-1 year) and in treatment-experienced patients it was 5 years (IQR: 3-9 years). Between 2015 and 2017 (P1), 729 patients included in RelevarEM started a new treatment, of which 85 (11.65%) were HETs. Between 2018 and 2020 (P2), 961 patients included in RelevarEM started a new treatment, of which 284 (29.55%) were HETs. When comparing P2 with P1, a significant increase in the use of HETs was observed (p < 0.01). The most frequently used HETs were alemtuzumab (50.59%) in P1, and cladribine (45.20%) in P2., Conclusion: The demographic and clinical characteristics of patients under HET in Argentina were identified. The incidence of overweight and obesity is alarming worldwide. In Argentina, multifactorial studies are scarce despite the high rates of childhood overweight and obesity (OW/OB). In this study we assessed the prevalence of childhood OW/OB and the associated risk factors from a multicausal perspective: we analyzed sleep habits, screen use, chronic stress in children and their caregivers, social relationship problems, eating habits, and physical activity. Of the 397 first and seventh graders who completed the questionnaires, 41% had childhood OW/OB. In children with obesity, a lower level of physical activity, a lower consumption of protective foods, a higher risk for sleep disorders, higher levels of chronic stress (in both children and their caregivers), and higher rates of peer rejection were observed. Widespread use of screens before bedtime was noted in most children. This study evidences the diversity of factors associated with childhood OW/OB and highlights the convenience of a multidimensional approach to address it. In addition, the results of this study suggest the need to consider lifestyle habits as a preventive and therapeutic strategy for the management of OW/OB from early stages., (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

Pyrethroids are extensively used to control adult populations of the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti , raising concerns regarding the increasing frequency and distribution of insecticide resistance mutations (kdr: knock-down resistance) in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene ( Nav ). The widespread use of pyrethroids imposes a threat to the success of mosquito control and the environment. In this study, we investigated the presence of two kdr mutations (V1016I and F1534C) in the Nav gene and their distribution across four neighborhoods in Posadas, Argentina, with different Ae. aegypti abundance and contrasting socioeconomic status (SES). Alleles at each locus were interrogated using TaqMan SNP genotyping assays in DNA extracted from adult females collected in a longitudinal study. We report the presence of both pyrethroid resistance alleles (kdr 1016I = 29.08%; kdr 1534C = 70.70%) among adult females. The frequency of combined kdr genotypes reveals that approximately 70% of local adult females have enhanced resistance to pyrethroids. Both, the proportion of resistant adult females (with at least one kdr allele in each locus) and Ae. aegypti abundance showed an uneven distribution between neighborhoods with different SES ( p < 0.001). In high-SES neighborhoods, we found more mosquitoes and a higher frequency of pyrethroid resistance, possibly as a consequence of different public health interventions, social habits, and insecticide use. This is the first report of kdr mutations in Ae. Aegypti in the northeast region of Argentina. The objective was to evaluate time to reach an EDSS of 4, 6, and 7 in NMOSD and MOGAD patients included in the Argentinean MS and NMOSD registry (RelevarEM, NCT 03,375,177)., Methods: NMOSD patients diagnosed according to 2015 criteria and with MOGAD were identified. Patients with at least 3 years of follow-up and periodic clinical evaluations with EDSS outcomes were included. AQP4-antibody and MOG-antibody status was recorded, and patients were stratified as seropositive and seronegative for AQP4-antibody. EDSS of 4, 6, and 7 were defined as dependent variables. Log rank test was used to identify differences between groups., Results: Registry data was provided for a total of 137 patients. Of these, seventy-five presented AQP4-ab-positive NMOSD, 45 AQP4-ab-negative NMOSD, and 11 MOGAD. AQP4-ab status was determined by cell-based assay (CBA) in 72% of NMOSD patients. MOG-ab status was tested by CBA in all cases. Mean time to EDSS of 4 was 53.6 ± 24.5 vs. 63.1 ± 32.2 vs. 44.7 ± 32 months in seropositive, seronegative NMOSD, and MOGAD, respectively (p = 0.76). Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by species of the complex Echinococcus granulosus, sensu lato in their larval stage. It is an endemic disease in the province of Río Negro, where small farmers generally have both sheep and goats. Lamb vaccination with EG95 was incorporated in 2009 with very good results: in fact, it contributed to a significant drop in prevalence of infection in both sheep and goats, when determined by necropsy and serology in 2018. In the design of the activity, it was decided not to vaccinate goats in order to minimize the operational requirements of vaccination and comments from producers about the rarity of observing hydatid cysts in goat viscera were considered., Objective: To identify causes which can still generate infection in dogs, and to detect species/genotypes in circulation in the province of Río Negro., Materials and Methods: In indigenous reserves comprised within the area of lamb vaccination with 3 doses of EG95, (dose 1 in December, dose 2 in January and dose 3 in December of the year following, at the time of application of dose 1 to the new lambs). Prevalence in adult goats and sheep was determined by necropsy and serology (ELISA). Infective species/genotypes present in the work area and in the rest of the province of Río Negro were identified by Cox1 mitochondrial gene sequencing. Epidemiological analysis was completed with surveys among farmers about slaughter habits for human consumption., Results: Through serology and necropsy, infection rates in vaccinated and nonvaccinated sheep were significantly different (21% versus 66%). Non-vaccinated sheep and non-vaccinated goats were also significantly different in that there was less infection in goats compared to sheep (7% versus 66% for necropsy, 30% versus 61% for serology); After many years of sheep vaccination the infection positives were low, and differences between vaccinated sheep and non-vaccinated goats turned out non-significant (21% versus 7%). With reference to epidemiology and control along the period 2018-2022, PZQ dosing of dogs 4 times a year was maintained, and 2 extra deworming tasks were introduced together with dose 1 and 2 of EG95, performed by the veterinary vaccination team, ensuring the ingestion of PZQ by dogs. Assessment of animal slaughter for consumption in 41 producers showed that 21 of them slaughter a monthly average of 18 goats (an average of 0.43 goat per month per farm) and 36 in all slaughter 35 old sheep in a year (average of 0.85 sheep per month per farm). With respect to identification of species/genotypes as from 2010, genotypes G1 have been found in 11 sheep (out of which 6 belong to vaccination zone) and genotypes G7, in one pig. Background/objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in patients with rheumatic and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) in Argentina: the SAR-CoVAC registry., Methods: SAR-CoVAC is a national, multicenter, and observational registry. Adult patients with rheumatic or IMIDs vaccinated for SARS-CoV-2 were consecutively included between June 1 and September 17, 2021. Sociodemographic data, comorbidities, underlying rheumatic or IMIDs, treatments received, their modification prior to vaccination, and history of SARS-CoV-2 infection were recorded. In addition, date and place of vaccination, type of vaccine applied, scheme, adverse events (AE), disease flares, and new immune-mediated manifestations related to the vaccine were analyzed., Results: A total of 1234 patients were included, 79% were female, with a mean age of 57.8 (SD 14.1) years. The most frequent diseases were rheumatoid arthritis (41.2%), osteoarthritis (14.5%), psoriasis (12.7%), and spondyloarthritis (12.3%). Most of them were in remission (28.5%) or low disease activity (41.4%). At the time of vaccination, 21% were receiving glucocorticoid treatment, 35.7% methotrexate, 29.7% biological (b) disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARD), and 5.4% JAK inhibitors. In total, 16.9% had SARS-CoV-2 infection before the first vaccine dose. Most patients (51.1%) received Gam-COVID-Vac as the first vaccine dose, followed by ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (32.8%) and BBIBP-CorV (14.5%). Half of them (48.8%) were fully vaccinated with 2 doses; 12.5% received combined schemes, being the most frequent Gam-COVID-Vac/mRAN-1273. The median time between doses was 51 days (IQR 53). After the first dose, 25.9% of the patients reported at least one AE and 15.9% after the second, being flu-like syndrome and local hypersensitivity the most frequent manifestations. There was one case of anaphylaxis. Regarding efficacy, 63 events of SARS-CoV-2 infection were reported after vaccination, 19% occurred during the first 14 days post-vaccination, 57.1% after the first dose, and 23.8% after the second. Most cases (85.9%) were asymptomatic or mild and 2 died due to COVID-19., Conclusions: In this national cohort of patients, the most common vaccines used were Gam-COVID-Vac and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. A quarter of the patients presented an AE and 5.1% presented SARS-CoV-2 infection after vaccination, in most cases mild., Study Registration: This study has been registered in ClinicalTrials.gov under the number: NCT04845997. Plant pathogens, such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses, can cause serious damage to crops and significantly reduce yield and quality. Bacterial diseases of agronomic crops, however, have been little studied. The present study aims to isolate and identify bacteria recovered from symptomatic maize (Zea mays) leaves collected from field samples in the province of Cordoba, Argentina. Bacterial strains were identified using whole-cell matrix-assisted laser-desorption-ionization-time-off light mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA sequencing. Members of the genera Exiguobacterium and Curtobacterium were dominant in the studied vegetal material. Two strains (RC18-1/2 and RC18-3/1) were selected for further studies. The pathogenicity test showed that plants inoculated with Curtobacterium sp. RC18-1/2 exhibited the same symptoms as those previously detected in the field. To our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence about the isolation of a Curtobacterium pathogenic strain in maize. Introduction: Hand-assisted laparoscopic colorectal surgery (HALS) is an alternative to straight laparoscopic approach (SL) that requires the use of a specific device to maintain the pneumoperitoneum. Our group has described an original double glove technique to replace it. Our purpose was to compare perioperative outcomes of patients undergoing HALS using this original technique vs SL., Methods: Retrospective review of a prospective database including patients who underwent elective laparoscopic colorectal resections between 2004 to 2020 at the Hospital Italiano, Argentina. Logistic regression analysis, propensity score matching, and inverse probability weighting were used to estimate adjusted treatment effects for perioperative outcomes., Results: HALS (n=458) and SL (n=1692) cases were demographically similar. HALS was associated with a shorter operative time (170.3 vs 206.9 minutes, p<0.001). Such difference was even more pronounced in obese (44.1 min), large patients (37.5 min), complex procedures (33.8 min) and surgeries carried out by non-trained surgeons (57,6 vs 31,6 minutes, p<0.001). Hand-assisted was associated with a lower conversion rate (5% vs 9.9%, p<0.001) with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.45 (95%CI 0.28-0.73). No difference in hospital stay, morbidity, and readmission rates was found., Conclusions: HALS with double-glove technique is comparable to SL in terms of postoperative outcomes keeping reduced operative time and conversion rates, especially in obese patients undergoing complex procedures., (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba.)

Swine coronaviruses affecting pigs have been studied sporadically in wildlife. In Argentina, epidemiological surveillance of TGEV/PRCV is conducted only in domestic pigs. The aim was to assess the prevalence of TGEV/PRCV in wild Suina. Antibodies against these diseases in wild boar and captive collared peccary were surveyed by ELISA. Antibodies against TGEV were found in three collared peccaries (n = 87). No TGEV/PRCV antibodies were detected in wild boar (n = 160). Preventive measures should be conducted in contact nodes where the transmission of agents may increase. Seroepidemiological studies help identify the indirect distribution of diseases, detecting serological markers of immunity and demonstrating undiagnosed infections in the general population. The objectives were to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Córdoba, Argentina, from December 2020 to January 2021 and to identify factors associated with the virus' contagiousness. A population-based cross-sectional observational study was performed in 3,225 individuals over two years of age living in Córdoba city, selected by multiple-stage random sampling proportional to distribution by gender, age group, and socioeconomic status in the city's population. Clinical characteristics, anthropometry, and comorbidities were collected by interview. Qualitative serological testing was performed for detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG antibodies (ARCHITECT, Abbott). SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was estimated for the total population and by age group, sex, socioeconomic status, and presence of target diseases. Prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated using a log-binomial regression model. SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was 16.68% (95%CI: 15.41-18.01). Age 2 to 18 years, living in neighborhoods with low socioeconomic status, and obesity increased the odds of seropositivity (PR = 1.50; 95%CI: 1.10-2.04, PR = 1.91; 95%CI: 1.34-2.67 and PR = 1.39; 95%CI: 1.04-1.85). The results indicate that the city of Córdoba displays differential attributes that increase the likelihood of a positive SARS-CoV-2 antibody test. This allows targeting epidemiological surveillance strategies to reduce the spread of the virus.

Objective: The objective is to describe the main characteristics of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Argentina and to examine the influence of ethnicity on the expression of the disease., Patients and Methods: RELESSAR is a multicentre register carried out by 106 researchers from 67 rheumatologic Argentine centres. It is a cross-sectional study of SLE (1982/1997 ACR) patients. RELESSAR electronic database includes demographic, cumulative SLE manifestations, SELENA-SLEDAI, SLICC-SDI, Katz's severity and Charlson's comorbidity indexes and treatment patterns., Results: We included 1,610 patients, 91.7% were female with a median age at diagnosis of 28.1 ± 12.8; 96.2% met ≥4 ACR 1982/97 criteria. Frequent manifestations were arthritis (83.5%), malar rash (79.5%), photosensitivity (75.3%), haematological (63.8%) and renal disease (47.4%), antinuclear antibodies (96%), anti-dsDNA (66.5%) and anti-Smith antibodies (29%). The mean Selena-SLEDAI score at last visit was 3.18 (SD 4.3) and mean SDI was 1 (SD 1.3). The accumulated treatments most frequently used were antimalarials (90.4%), corticosteroids (90%), azathioprine (31.8%), intravenous cyclophosphamide (30.2%), mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolic acid (24.5%), methotrexate (19.3%), belimumab 5.3% and rituximab 5.1%. Refractory lupus was diagnosed in 9.3% of the cases. The main causes of death were lupus activity (25.0%), activity and concomitant infections (25.0%), infections (18.2%), vascular disease (13.6%) and cancer (4.5%). Mortality was associated with higher SLEDAI, Katz, damage indexes and comorbidities. Of the 1610 patients included, 44.6% were Caucasian, 44.5% Mestizo, 8.1% Amerindian and 1.2% Afro-Latin American. Mestizo patients had higher male representation, low socioeconomic status, more inadequate medical coverage, fewer formal years of education and shorter disease duration. Polyadenopathies and Raynaud's phenomenon were more frequent in Caucasians. In the logistic regression analysis higher damage index (OR 1.28, CI 95% 1.02-1.61, p = 0.03) remained associated to mestizo ethnicity., Conclusions: This study represents the largest number of adult patients with SLE studied in Argentina. Caucasian patients were differentiated by having Raynaud's phenomenon and polyadenopathy more frequently, while patients of Mestizo origin had higher damage indexes.

Introduction: We aimed to analyze the accumulative risk of MRI and OB factors for evolution from RIS to MS in subjects included in the Argentinean MS registry (NCT03375177)., Methods: RIS subjects were identified according to RIS diagnosis criteria. Subjects were longitudinally followed with clinical and MRI at intervals of 6 months. Time from RIS identification to the first clinical event was estimated using Kaplan-Meier. Multivariable Cox regression models were created to assess the independent predictive value of demographic characteristics, as well as clinical, OB and MRI data on time to the first clinical event. The single and increased risk factor of evolution of RIS was quantified., Results: A total of 88 RIS subjects, mean follow-up time 42 ± 4 months were included. 39 (44.3%) and 23 (26.1%) had a new MRI lesion or a clinical event, respectively, during the follow-up. OB (HR 5.9, 95% CI 1.29-10.1, p = 0.004), infratentorial lesions (HR 3.7, 95% CI 1.09-7.5) and spinal cord lesions (HR 5.3, 95% CI 1.4-8.2, p = 0.01) at RIS identification were independent predictors associated with a subsequent clinical event. The accumulative risk showed that when two of the three factors (OB, infratentorial or spinal cord lesions) were present the HR was 10.4, 95% CI 4.4-22, p < 0.001, and when three factors were present, it was HR 15.6, 95% CI 5.7-28, p < 0.001 for a relapse., Conclusion: The presence of three factors significantly increased the risk of clinical event; high-risk subjects should probably be managed by a different approach than those used for individuals without high-risk factors., (© 2021. The use of chemical insecticides is the main control method for Blattella germanica worldwide. The prolonged and frequent use of insecticides produced the selection of insecticide-resistant individuals. The German cockroach is one of the most widespread urban pests in Argentina. In the last decades, resistance monitoring studies in this country demonstrated that there is a high prevalence of pyrethroid-resistant populations of B. germanica in the field. In this work, we studied the resistance mechanisms of a field-collected strain of B. germanica at toxicological, enzymatic, and molecular levels. A resistance ratio of 100 was obtained for the resistant strain when it was exposed to β-cypermethrin. The pretreatment with specific synergists (piperonyl butoxide and triphenyl phosphate) led to a significant increase in the toxicity of the pyrethroid, suggesting an involvement of oxidases and esterases in the detoxification of this insecticide. Moreover, esterase and oxidase activities in the resistant strain were 1.5-fold and 2-fold higher respectively, compared to the susceptible individuals. On the other hand, the voltage-gated sodium channel gene of the resistant cockroaches did not show nucleotidic substitutions in the domain II which are associated to knockdown resistance in this species. These results suggest that the main mechanism of resistance of the studied cockroaches' strain is metabolic, mainly due to an increase in the activity of oxidase and esterase enzymes. The results of this work in addition to other reports found in literature show that the extended use of a single active principle for cockroach control promotes the development of resistance leading to control failure in the field. In contrast, integrated pest management strategies include the use of different control tools in addition to chemical insecticides, which delay the appearance of resistance increasing the efficacy of pest control.

Background: Identification of triggers that potentially instigate attacks in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) has remained challenging. We aimed to analyze the seasonality of NMOSD and MS attacks in an Argentinean cohort seeking differences between the two disorders., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in a cohort of NMOSD and MS patients followed in specialized centers from Argentina and enrolled in RelevarEM, a nationwide, longitudinal, observational, non-mandatory registry of MS/NMOSD patients. Patients with complete relapse data (date, month and year) at onset and during follow-up were included. Attack counts were analyzed by month using a Poisson regression model with the median monthly attack count used as reference., Results: A total of 551 patients (431 MS and 120 NMOSD), experiencing 236 NMOSD-related attacks and 558 MS-related attacks were enrolled. The mean age at disease onset in NMOSD was 39.5 ± 5.8 vs. 31.2 ± 9.6 years in MS (p < 0.01). Mean follow-up time was 6.1 ± 3.0 vs. 7.4 ± 2.4 years (p < 0.01), respectively. Most of the included patients were female in both groups (79% vs. 60%, p < 0.01). We found a peak of number of attacks in June (NMOSD: 28 attacks (11.8%) vs MS: 33 attacks (5.9%), incidence rate ratio 1.82, 95%CI 1.15-2.12, p = 0.03), but no differences were found across the months in both disorders when evaluated separately. Strikingly, we observed a significant difference in the incidence rate ratio of attacks during the winter season when comparing NMOSD vs. MS (NMOSD: 75 attacks (31.7%) vs MS: 96 attacks (17.2%), incidence rate ratio 1.82, 95%CI 1.21-2.01, p = 0.02) after applying Poisson regression model. Similar results were observed when comparing the seropositive NMOSD (n = 75) subgroup vs. MS., Conclusions: Lack of seasonal variation in MS and NMOSD attacks was observed when evaluated separately. Objective: To analyze the Peruvian scientific production on Heart Failure (HF) in the period 2000-2020., Methods: We performed an observational bibliometric study, in the Scopus and Scielo database, of documents published on heart failure by an author with Peruvian affiliation, between the years 2000 and 2020. We describe variables of scientific production, number of annual publications, documents, characteristics of the publications, and institutions. The collaborative networks were analyzed by building a network of nodes using the VOSViewer v1.6.5 software., Results: A 236 publications were found in Scopus and 55 in Scielo. The largest number of documents were original articles followed by review articles. The journal "The Lancet" and "Revista Peruana de Medicina Experimental y Salud Pública" were those that had the highest number of publications. Thirty-one countries were registered that had at least 5 documents published with an author from Peru. Scientific collaboration was mainly with the United States and at the regional level with Argentina. 55 documents were published with only Peruvian authors., Conclusion: The scientific production in HF by Peruvian authors is in exponential growth. Introduction and Objectives: Failures at any step in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance process can result in HCC diagnostic delays and associated worse prognosis. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of surveillance failure and its associated risk factors in patients with HCC in Argentina, considering three steps: 1) recognition of at-risk patients, 2) implementation of HCC surveillance, 3) success of HCC surveillance., Methods: We performed a multi-center cross-sectional study of patients at-risk for HCC in Argentina seen between10.01.2018 and 10.30.2019. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify correlates of surveillance failure., Results: Of 301 included patients, the majority were male (74.8%) with a mean age of 64 years old. At the time of HCC diagnosis, 75 (25%) patients were unaware of their diagnosis of chronic liver disease, and only 130 (43%) patients were under HCC surveillance. Receipt of HCC surveillance was significantly associated with follow-up by a hepatologist. Of 119 patients with complete surveillance, surveillance failure occurred in 30 (25%) patients. Surveillance failure was significantly associated with alpha fetoprotein ≥20 ng/mL (OR 4.0, CI 95% 1.43-11.55)., Conclusions: HCC surveillance failure was frequent in all the evaluated steps. Background: The global impact of Zika virus in Latin America has drawn renewed attention to circulating mosquito-borne viruses in this region, such as dengue and chikungunya. Our objective was to assess socio-ecological factors associated with Aedes mosquito vector density as a measure of arbovirus transmission risk in three cities of potentially recent Zika virus introduction: Ibagué, Colombia; Manta, Ecuador; and Posadas, Argentina, in order to inform disease mitigation strategies., Methods: We sampled Aedes mosquito populations in a total of 1086 households, using indoor and peridomestic mosquito collection methods, including light traps, resting traps, traps equipped with chemical attractant and aspirators. For each sampled household, we collected socio-economic data using structured questionnaires and data on microenvironmental conditions using iButton data loggers., Results: A total of 3230 female Aedes mosquitoes were collected, of which 99.8% were Aedes aegypti and 0.2% were Aedes albopictus. Mean female Aedes mosquito density per household was 1.71 (standard deviation: 2.84). We used mixed-effects generalized linear Poisson regression analyses to identify predictors of Aedes density, using month, neighborhood and country as random-effects variables. Across study sites, the number of household occupants [incidence rate ratio (IRR): 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.14], presence of entry points for mosquitoes into the household (IRR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.30-1.76) and presence of decorative vegetation (IRR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.22-1.88) were associated with higher Aedes density; while being in the highest wealth tertile of household wealth (IRR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.66-0.92), knowledge of how arboviruses are transmitted (IRR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.89-1.00) and regular emptying of water containers by occupants (IRR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.67-0.92) were associated with lower Aedes density., Conclusions: Our study addresses the complexities of arbovirus vectors of global significance at the interface between human and mosquito populations. Our results point to several predictors of Aedes mosquito vector density in countries with co-circulation of multiple Aedes-borne viruses, and point to modifiable risk factors that may be useful for disease prevention and control., (© 2021. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the etiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has rapidly spread worldwide. Studies of transmission of the virus carried out in animals have suggested that certain animals may be susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2. The aim of the present study was to investigate the infection of SARS-CoV-2 in pets (18 cats and 20 dogs) from owners previously confirmed as COVID-19-positive. Oropharyngeal and rectal swabs were taken and analyzed by real-time RT-PCR assays, while blood samples were taken for antibody detection. Of the total pets analyzed, one cat was found reactive to SARS-CoV-2 by real-time RT-PCR of an oropharyngeal and a rectal swab. This cat presented only sneezing as a clinical sign. Serological analysis confirmed the presence of antibodies in the serum sample from this cat, as well as in the serum from another cat non-reactive to real-time RT-PCR. Complete sequence and phylogenetic analysis allowed determining that the SARS-CoV-2 genome belonged to the B.1.499 lineage. This lineage has been reported in different provinces of Argentina, mainly in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. This study notifies the first detection of the natural infection and molecular analysis of SARS-CoV-2 in a cat from Argentina whose owner where COVID-19-positive. Although there is currently no evidence that cats can spread COVID-19, results suggest that health authorities should test pets with COVID-19-positive owners., (Copyright © 2021. Purpose: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive disease caused by the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. Real-world data of ATLL in Latin America are lacking., Patients and Methods: We analyzed patients with ATLL (acute, lymphomatous, chronic, and smoldering) encountered in 11 Latin American countries between 1995 and 2019. Treatment response was assessed according to the 2009 consensus report. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test., Results: We identified 253 patients; 226 (lymphomatous: n = 122, acute: n = 73, chronic: n = 26, and smoldering: n = 5) had sufficient data for analysis (median age 57 years). Most patients with ATLL were from Peru (63%), Chile (17%), Argentina (8%), and Colombia (7%). Hypercalcemia was positively associated with acute type (57% v lymphomatous 27%, P = .014). The median survival times (months) were 4.3, 7.9, 21.1, and not reached for acute, lymphomatous, chronic, and smoldering forms, with 4-year survival rates of 8%, 22%, 40%, and 80%, respectively. First-line zidovudine (AZT)-interferon alfa (IFN) resulted in an overall response rate of 63% (complete response [CR] 24%) for acute. First-line chemotherapy yielded an overall response rate of 41% (CR 29%) for lymphomatous. CR rate was 42% for etoposide, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and prednisone versus 12% for cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and prednisone-like regimen ( P < .001). Progression-free survival at 1 year for acute type patients treated with AZT-IFN was 67%, whereas 2-year progression-free survival in lymphomatous type patients who achieved CR after chemotherapy was 77%., Conclusion: This study confirms Latin American ATLL presents at a younger age and has a high incidence of lymphomatous type, low incidence of indolent subtypes, and worse survival rates as compared with Japanese patients. The objectives of the present study were to describe the frequency of aggressive multiple sclerosis (aMS) as well as to compare clinical and radiological characteristics in aMS and non-aMS patients included in RelevarEM (NCT03375177)., Methods: The eligible study population and cohort selection included adult-onset patients (≥18 years) with definite MS. AMS were defined as those reaching confirmed EDSS ≥ 6 within 5 years from symptom onset. Confirmation was achieved when a subsequent EDSS ≥ 6 was recorded at least six months later but within 5 years of the first clinical presentation. AMS and non-aMS were compared using the χ2 test for categorical and the Mann-Whitney for continuous variables at MS onset and multivariable analysis was performed using forward stepwise logistic regression with baseline characteristics at disease onset., Results: A total of 2158 patients with MS were included: 74 aMS and 2084 non-aMS. The prevalence of aMS in our cohort was 3.4% (95%CI 2.7-4.2). AMS were more likely to be male (p = 0.003), older at MS onset (p < 0.001), have primary progressive MS (PPMS) phenotype (p = 0.03), multifocal presentation (p < 0.001), and spinal cord as well as infratentorial lesions at MRI during disease onset (p = 0.004 and p = 0.002, respectively)., Conclusion: 3.4% of our patient population could be considered aMS. Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus (s.l.). This study investigated the prevalence and potential risk factors associated with human CE in the towns and rural areas of Ñorquinco and Ramos Mexia, Rio Negro province, Argentina., Methods: To detect abdominal CE cysts, we screened 892 volunteers by ultrasound and investigated potential risk factors for CE using a standardized questionnaire. Prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was used to measure the association between CE and the factors investigated, applying bivariate and multivariate analyses., Results: Abdominal CE was detected in 42/892 screened volunteers (4.7%, 95% CI 3.2-6.1), only two of whom were under 15 years of age. Thirteen (30.9%) CE cases had 25 cysts in active stages (CE1, CE2, CE3a, according to the WHO Informal Working Group on Echinococcosis [WHO-IWGE] classification). The most relevant risk factors identified in the bivariate analysis included: living in rural areas (P = 0.003), age > 40 years (P = 0.000), always drinking water from natural sources (P = 0.007), residing in rural areas during the first 5 years of life (P = 0.000) and having lived more than 20 years at the current address (P = 0.013). In the multivariate final model, the statistically significant risk factors were: frequently touching dogs (P = 0.012), residing in rural areas during the first 5 years of life (P = 0.004), smoking (P = 0.000), age > 60 years (P = 0.002) and living in rural areas (P = 0.017)., Conclusions: Our results point toward infection with CE being acquired since childhood and with constant exposure throughout life, especially in rural areas with a general environmental contamination.

Background: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies (MOG-ab) have been described in aquaporin-4-antibodies(AQP4-ab)-negative neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients. We aimed to evaluate the percentage of AQP4-ab-negative NMOSD patients who are positive for MOG-ab in a cohort of Argentinean patients included in RelevarEM (Clinical Trials registry number NCT03375177)., Methods: RelevarEM is a longitudinal, strictly observational multiple sclerosis (MS) and NMOSD registry in Argentina. Of 3031 consecutive patients (until March 2020), 165 patients with phenotype of suspected NMOSD, whose relevant data for the purpose of this study were available, were included. Data on demographic, clinical, paraclinical and treatment in AQP4-ab (positive, negative and unknown) and MOG-ab (positive and negative) patients were evaluated., Results: A total of 165 patients (79 AQP4-Ab positive, 67 AQP4-Ab negative and 19 unknown) were included. Of these, 155 patients fulfilled the 2015 NMOSD diagnostic criteria. Of 67 AQP4-Ab-negative patients, 36 (53.7%) were tested for MOG-Ab and 10 of them (27.7%) tested positive. Serum AQP4-ab levels were tested by means of cell-based assay (CBA) in 48 (35.2%), based on tissue-based indirect immunofluorescence assays in 58 (42.6%) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 4 (2.9%). All MOG-ab were tested by CBA. Optic neuritis (90%) was the most frequent symptom at presentation and optic nerve lesions the most frequent finding (80%) in neuroimaging of MOG-ab-associated disease. Of these, six (60%) patients were under immunosuppressant treatments at latest follow-up., Conclusion: We observed that 27.7% (10/36) of the AQP4-ab-negative patients tested for MOG-ab were positive for this antibody, in line with results from other world regions., (Copyright © 2021. Background: People with dementia and their family caregivers may face a great burden through social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be manifested as various behavioral and clinical symptoms., Objective: To investigate the impacts of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with dementia and their family caregivers., Methods: Two semi-structured questionnaires were applied via telephone to family caregivers of people diagnosed with dementia in three cities in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, in order to assess clinical and behavioral changes in people with dementia and in their caregivers., Results: In general, 321 interviews were conducted. A significant decline in memory function has been reported among 53.0%of people with dementia. In addition, 31.2%of individuals with dementia felt sadder and 37.4%had increased anxiety symptoms. These symptoms of anxiety were greater in individuals with mild to moderate dementia, while symptoms of agitation were greater in individuals with severe dementia. Moreover, compulsive-obsessive behavior, hallucinations, increased forgetfulness, altered appetite, and increased difficulty in activities of daily living were reported more frequently among individuals with moderate to severe dementia. Caregivers reported feeling more tired and overwhelmed during this period and these symptoms were also influenced by the severity of dementia., Conclusion: Social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a series of negative behavioral repercussions, both for people with dementia and for their family caregivers in these three South American countries.

Influenza infection is a latent public health problem, affecting millions of people throughout the world, which imposes high morbidity and economic burden on the region. In Argentina, influenza-associated mortality is estimated at 6/100 000 person-years, and is higher among men = 65 years old. The knowledge of the baseline characteristics and outcomes of hospitalized patients is crucial for public health officials planning interventions to address local outbreaks. Thus, in this retrospective, single-center study, performed in a highcomplexity university hospital, we aimed to analyze clinical characteristics, image findings, and laboratory variables of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza requiring hospitalization in our hospital during 2019. Cases were confirmed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. One hundred and forty-three patients with influenza were hospitalized during the study period; 141 (98.6%) were infected with influenza virus type A, including 88 (61.5%) with the H1N1 subtype. The median age was 71 years (IQR 60- 82), 111 (77.6%) were older than 70 years, and 126 (88.1%) had at least one coexisting illness; 56 (39.1%) patients required intensive care unit, 16 (11.1%) invasive mechanical ventilation, and 6 (4.1%) died during hospitalization. In this study, in-hospital mortality was similar to that reported in previous series of non-pandemic influenza, even though the majority of the cases in this study were older than 70 years and had at least one coexisting illness.

Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess parent satisfaction with the management of ketogenic diet therapies (KDTs) through telemedicine using WhatsApp as the main tool., Methods: Parent satisfaction was longitudinally evaluated through questionnaires. The survey was developed with Google Questionnaire forms and sent via WhatsApp. The questionnaire consisted of 13 items concerning the management of KDTs using telemedicine in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Our population of patients has limited financial resources and low levels of education. Given that many families did not have either computers or WIFI, or any other access to information or communication technology, WhatsApp was chosen as a tool as it was available on the cell phones of all families and the professionals., Results: Our survey showed that 96.3% of the parents were satisfied with the management of KDTs through telemedicine. The main benefits observed were the possibility of continuing treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ease of accessing the professional team from the comfort of their home. Overall, 72.2% of the families would recommend using telemedicine for KDTs in any situation regardless of the pandemic. None of the families reported that they would recommend against treatment by telemedicine. The availability of a social support network (parents WhatsApp group) coordinated by professionals from the KDT team was considered to be useful by most respondents (90%)., Conclusions: Our study suggests that management of children with DRE on KDTs through telemedicine is feasible, well accepted by the families, and probably as safe as conventional medicine. It has been demonstrated that phenotypic plasticity and genotype by environment interaction are important for coping with new and heterogeneous environments during invasions. Zaprionus indianus Gupta (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an Afrotropical invasive fly species introduced to the South American continent in 1999. This species is generalist and polyphagous, since it develops and feeds in several different fruit species. These characteristics of Z. indianus suggest that phenotypic plasticity and genotype by environment interaction may be important in this species invasion process. In this sense, our aim was to investigate the role of genetic variation for phenotypic plasticity (genotype by environment interaction) in Z. indianus invasion of the South American continent. Specifically, we quantified quantitative genetic variation and genotype by environment interactions of morphological and life history traits in different developmental environments, that is, host fruits. This was done in different populations in the invasive range of Z. indianus in Argentina. Results showed that Z. indianus populations have considerable amounts of quantitative genetic variation. Also, genotype by environment interactions was detected for the different traits analyzed in response to the different developmental environments. Interestingly, the amounts and patterns of these parameters differed between populations. The analysis of zoonotic disease risk requires the consideration of both human and animal geo-referenced disease incidence data. Here we show an application of joint Bayesian analyses to the study of echinococcosis granulosus (EG) in the province of Rio Negro, Argentina. We focus on merging passive and active surveillance data sources of animal and human EG cases using joint Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal models. While similar spatial clustering and temporal trending was apparent, there appears to be limited lagged dependence between animal and human outcomes. Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic immune-mediated neurological disorder in young adults, more frequently found in women than in men. This study contributes to the knowledge of continental fishes recovered from sedimentary successions corresponding to the Bonaerean Stage/Age (late mid-Pleistocene) in the locality of Centinela del Mar, General Alvarado County, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. At this site we describe fossil fishes from a palaeolagoon, including Corydoras sp., Pimelodella sp., Rhamdia sp., Oligosarcus sp., small undetermined characids, Jenynsia sp. and Odontesthes sp. The recovered ichthyofaunal assemblage comprises at least seven taxa of Paranaean lineage. The taxonomic composition of the palaeoichthyofauna is quite comparable to that presently found in Bonaerean Watercourses of the Atlantic Drainage ecoregion. This suggests that local ichthyofaunal communities have remained relatively stable since the late mid-Pleistocene., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: Here, we present a multicenter series of patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) and related electroclinical patterns (REP) other than Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) who were treated with rufinamide as add-on therapy., Methods: Medical records of 34 patients with DEE and REP other than LGS treated with add-on rufinamide seen at four pediatric neurology centers in Argentina between May 2014 and March 2019 were retrospectively analyzed., Results: We evaluated 34 patients (18 males, 16 females), aged between 2 and 15 years with a mean and median age of 6 and 8 years, respectively. The children had different types of childhood-onset refractory DEE and REP other than LGS and were treated with rufinamide for a mean period of 20 months (range, 12-60 months). Twenty-two of 34 patients (64.5%) who received rufinamide as add-on therapy had a greater than 50% decrease in seizures, and two patients (5.8%) became seizure-free. Four patients (11.7%) had a 25-50% seizure reduction, while seizure frequency remained unchanged in four others (11.7%) and increased in two patients (5.8%). The final mean dosage of rufinamide was 31.5 ± 15.5 mg/kg per day (range, 19-75.4 mg/kg) if combined with valproic acid and of 35.4 ± 11.5 mg/kg per day (range, 8-60.5 mg/kg) without valproic acid. Adverse effects were recorded in nine patients (26.4%). We here describe the first isolation and molecular typing of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo Bovis in Argentina, obtained from urine of aborted cows from a breeding herd located in Saladillo, Buenos Aires Province. The abortions occurred in coincidence with important floods with many cows presenting suspicious serological titers and subsequent seroconversion. The percentage of abortions was 3.5% of a herd of 1700 cows and the microorganism was isolated from 7 of the 20 urine samples obtained., (Copyright © 2019 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the baseline epidemiological data of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients included in RelevarEM (Clinical Trials registry number NCT03375177)., Methods: RelevarEM is a longitudinal, strictly observational MS and NMOSD registry in Argentina. Epidemiological and comorbidity data from MS and NMOSD patients were described and compared. For comorbidities, the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used to calculate the burden at entry. CCI was stratified in 0 and ≥ 1 and described for the entire cohort., Results: A total of 1588 and 75 MS and NMOSD patients (respectively) were included. For MS patients, the mean age was 42 ± 7 years, female sex 65.3%, mean EDSS 2, and mean disease duration 8 ± 6 years. In NMOSD, the mean age was 40 ± 7 years, female sex 78.7%, mean disease duration 5 ± 3.5 years, and mean EDSS 2.5. The most frequent MS phenotype was RRMS in 82.4%. In MS, the CCI was 0 in 85.8.2% while ≥ 1 was in 14.2% of patients. Regarding phenotype stratification, CCI ≥ 1 was 3.9% in CIS, 13.5% in RRMS, 28.7% in SPMS, and 17.4% in PPMS (p < 0.001 between groups). In NMOSD, the CCI was 0 in 64% while ≥ 1 was in 36%. The MS/NMOSD ratio found was 21/1., Conclusions: This is the first analysis of the longitudinal Argentinean registry of MS and NMOSD describing and comparing conditions that contributes to provide reliable real-world data in the country.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The control program of CE of Rio Negro province, Argentina, involves annual surveillance using ultrasound (US) screening in school children, and five-year cross-sectional surveys to detect livestock farms with parasitized dogs by coproELISA with confirmation tests (Western Blot or PCR). Control program is based on deworming of dogs with praziquantel and the aim is to identify areas at risk of Cystic echinococcosis transmission to humans, using all available data sources. The information was spatially distributed in 13 program areas and, at a smaller geographical scale, in 80 Primary Health Care Centers. CoproELISA surveys involved three randomized sampling periods (2003-05, 2009-10, 2017-18), with 1790 canine fecal samples. The US surveys were conducted in 2003-08, 2009-16 and 2017-18 in 34,515 children. Heat maps were created at the smallest geographic scale with QGIS 3.4.6. For the consecutive sampling periods, prevalence of positive canine fecal samples from livestock farms were 14.7, 12.1 and 7.8%, respectively, and children prevalence was 0.4, 0.2 and 0.1%, respectively. In some areas of Argentina endemic for human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), tropical spastic paraparesis is frequent in subjects who lack antibodies against the virus; however, the relevance of this seronegative status in the country has not been investigated. In neighboring countries, HTLV-1 seronegative status has been described in patients with different diseases; however, data regarding features of seronegative HTLV-1 carriers are scarce. We investigated the seronegative status in 124 relatives of 28 HTLV-1 infected subjects from an endemic area in Northwest Argentina. Blood samples and clinical/epidemiological data were collected. Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 infection was diagnosed by serology and long terminal repeat (LTR) sequence, env and tax gene detection. IgG anti-Tax HTLV-1 antibody, tax gene sequence, and DNA proviral load were also evaluated. Seventy-five percent of the 124 relatives were negative for HTLV-1/2 antibodies; 35.5% were also negative by molecular assays and 64.5% were negative for HTLV-1 LTR and env sequences, but positive for two sequences of HTLV-1 tax gene. Also, 35.7% of these subjects had IgG anti-Tax antibodies. The seronegative HTLV-1 status was significantly associated with male gender, youth, and sensory symptoms/autonomic nervous system dysfunction. High rates of seronegative symptomatic and asymptomatic HTLV-1 carriers in Argentina are described. The evidence highlights that HTLV-1 prevalence may be underestimated worldwide. Larger cohort studies are required to assess disease outcome in these seronegative subjects. Also, the findings emphasize the limitations of ongoing screening assays for diagnosis and blood safety. Therefore, algorithms for HTLV-1 diagnosis should include not only serological but also molecular assays.

This work quantified ecosystem services (ES) and the geographic gross product (GGP) at municipal level in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (MRBA), Argentina. The ES offer and GGP were evaluated for each land use (extensive agriculture EA, intensive agriculture IA, urban and periurban agriculture UPA, green areas GA, urban use URB), expressed as a percentage (%), at the municipality level. Municipalities with a greater URB percentage (<70) presented an elevated ES offer from GA. In periurban municipalities EA contributed to ES offer more than other vegetated land uses (IA, GA, and UPA). Urban municipalities presented 20% more GGP than periurban municipalities. The GGP was negatively associated with total ES offer (-0.34) and ES offer from EA (-0.46). The identification and quantification of ES and GGP is relevant for achieving an adequate landscape planning and a sustainable environmental and economic use of urban systems.
