Context: The Patagonian huemul, an endangered Odocoilinedeer, has an estimated 350–500 individuals remaining in Argentina. Today's population size, representing a numerical reduction of >99% of original estimates, is fragmented into small groups along ~2000 km of Andean mountains. The species' numbers were heavily reduced by past overexploitation and they disappeared in areas of high anthropogenic activity, predominantly the fertile valley bottoms. Aims: This research delineates the current potential distribution of Patagonian huemul by using climatic indicators, topographic and vegetational proxies, and anthropogenic pressure, to determine the relevance of the climatic envelope on current distribution. Methods: Occurrence records (latitude and longitude) were compiled (n = 159) by consulting the literature. Twenty environmental variables were used (WorldClim database) and two other representative environmental variables (normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI)) were added to test their predictive power. We added the human footprint index (HFP) as a variable to control for model bias. Using the maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt), we modelled the species' potential distribution. We designated the historical distribution as area M. Additionally, we calculated three areas of distribution: current, historical and potential. Finally, we calculated distributional retraction of the species and area lost per year. Key results: The model showed good predictive power (AUCTest = 0.764 ± 0.091). However, low values were obtained for AUCtrain and AUCprom for the different predictor scenarios. Although the model shows the interaction among several climatic, environmental, and topographic variables, the human footprint index (39.9%) was the variable that most influenced the current potential distribution of this species. Conclusion: Our model shows that most of Patagonia's surface is climatically suitable for huemul. This suggests that the causes of distributional retraction are not related to limitations imposed by the climate envelope, but rather concur with recent research showing impact owing to the species' behavioural response to anthropogenic activity. Implications: Current populations are small, fragmented, and confined to poor-quality sites. Although the species is currently found mainly within protected areas, management actions must be initiated that promote innovative strategies in unprotected areas, as well as high-value habitats, particularly as protected areas contain limited fertile lower-valley habitats. Background: Stephadiscus lyratus (Couthouy in Gould, 1846), an endemic Charopidae from southern South America, was described from few dry shells. The distribution of this species is known on scattering occurrences, mainly from material deposited in museum collections. We provide here new information on anatomy, habitat, and microhabitat preferences and estimate the potential geographic distribution of the species to test if it is exclusively endemic to the Subpolar Magellanic Forest. Methods: Fieldwork was carried out in the National Parks of the Patagonian Forests. Snails were photographed, measured, and dissected for anatomical studies; shells were studied with scanning electron microscopy. Estimation of the species geographical distribution (EGD) was obtained through correlative ecological niche modeling (ENM). We designed a calibration area a priori with known species points of occurrence in the Magellanic Subpolar Forests and borders of the Patagonian steppe. Seven bioclimatic variables of the WorldClim database were used. The best ENMs were calibrated and selected using a maximum entropy method with Maxent v3.3.3K through the R package “kuenm”. Candidate models were created by combining four values of regularization multiplier and all possible combinations of three feature classes. We evaluated candidate model performance based on significance (partial ROC), omission rates (E = 5%), and model complexity (AICc). From the best models obtained, a final model was transferred to a region “G” consisting of the calibration area plus the Valdivian Temperate Forests and whole Patagonian steppe, where we hypothesize that the species could be present. Finally, we obtained binary presence-absence maps. We quantified the proportion of the occurrence points and distribution range of S. lyratus in different land cover categories. To explore the degree of protection of S. lyratus’EGD, we quantified the proportion of its distributional range within protected areas. Results: A be-lobed kidney, a close secondary ureter, the terminal portion of the uterus forming a compact glandular mass, and the vas deferens with a dilatation are new anatomical information that distinguishes this species. Stephadiscus lyratus inhabit cold native forest areas, mainly living on or under humid logs in contact with the ground. The main constraining variables to explain S. lyratus distribution in the EGD were BIO3, BIO12, BIO6, and BIO4. The potential area of distribution obtained almost duplicates their original range (140,454 km²) extending to the Valdivian Temperate forests mainly in Chile. Natural and semi-natural terrestrial vegetation was predominant in the potential area of distribution of S. lyratus. However, only 14.7% of this area occurs within current protected areas from Argentina and Chile. The ectothermic physiological traits of this species, low dispersal capacity, and its narrow habitat requirements turn S. lyratus into a potentially vulnerable species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The following paper presents the results of a Species Distribution Model (SDM) for grassland hunter-gatherer archaeology sites in the southern Pampas region of Argentina. The goal of this exploratory model is to provide a complementary survey model for the detection of archaeological sites in this region, which will also help characterize and discuss site locations and regional distribution patterns of hunter-gatherer occupations. Even in this largely homogenous and highly dynamic landscape, SDMs can help guide archaeological surveys by identifying some environmental variables affecting hunter-gatherer decisions, and can provide insights into mobility and archaeological settlement patterns. Among the available tools for SDM, Maximum Entropy Modeling (Maxent) is one of the most widely used approaches in archaeological predictive modelling. After controlling for bias and adjustment of several modifiable parameters, the Maxent software provided a potentially effective predictive model to direct future archaeological survey and heritage management projects. The results of this research suggest that watercourses and slope were the key environmental factors influencing the distribution of hunter-gatherer archaeological sites in the southern Pampas region. Mollusca is a megadiverse phylum with an estimated number of 70,000–76,000 described species which can inhabit a wide variety of environments. Among them, land snails are a main component of terrestrial ecosystems and they play a pivotal role in ecosystem functioning. They are suffering habitat loss, overexploitation and competition from introduced species, but are regarded as a "non-charismatic" group for conservation purposes. Orthalicoidea is a dominant faunal element in the Neotropics and in Argentina includes 104 species that inhabit a variety of environments. Their abundance, diversity, comprehensive taxonomy and widespread representation in different ecoregions makes this molluscan group an excellent model for biodiversity assessments. The database used here consisted of 985 unique geographic records of 104 species. Species distribution models were generated using the Maximum Entropy method and Zonation v 3.1 was used to evaluate the proposed conservation goals. Three analyses including species distributions, the current protected areas system (PAs) and the Human print layer were carried out. This allowed the identification of priority areas for conservation, the percentage of the species distribution under PAs and analysis of the potential impacts under current land use and in the priority areas detected above. Sixty-one species were modeled, and 59 of them were included in the priority area selection process due to their high area under curve (AUC) scores. Five high priority areas located in the different ecoregions, were identified: 1-dry Chaco, 2-humid Pampas, 3-Southern Andean Yungas, 4-Alto Paraná Atlantic Forests and 5-high Monte. A small percentage of the average distribution range of Orthalicoidean species (3%) was within the current protected areas. Highest-ranked priority areas for land snails are outside the current protected areas system. When human impact is considered, the priority areas are reduced in size and appear as small patches. However, highest priority areas for conservation continue being those detected in the above analyses. Most of the areas detected are used for economic purposes, creating conflicts of interest between the development of human activities and conservation. This study represents one of the first attempts to identify ecoregion level priority areas for a terrestrial invertebrate group. Further analyses, including new predictors and other molluscan taxa, would improve planning the conservation of poorly known invertebrate groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
