Abstract

The article discusses the results from 165 shorebirds sampled in freshwater and coastal wetlands in Chubut and Santa Cruz provinces in southern Patagonia, Argentina, that were tested for all avian influenza (AI) virus subtypes between August 2004 and December 2005. The shorebirds have different migratory strategies and include five Neotropical species such as American Oystercatcher and Least Seedsnipe and six Nearctic shorebird species such as Red Knot and Sanderling. The results showed the absence of AI viruses in shorebirds of southern Patagonia.
