Aerosteon riocoloradensis represents one of the most complete megaraptorans yet discovered. This theropod comes from Anacleto Formation (Campanian) of Mendoza Province, Argentina. The aims of this contribution are: to present a detailed, bone by bone description of this specimen with figures of each bone; provide comparisons to other closely related theropods; revise the original assignation and diagnosis of such taxa. Three bones were re-assigned and almost all the autapomorphies of Aerosteon were modified. Features in the vertebral columns, which are shared with other megaraptorans, show that these theropods shared features with basal coelurosaurs. The titanosaur sauropodBonatitan reigiis redescribed. The material collected, originally interpreted as pertaining to two different individuals, is reorganised in five individuals, and the original type specimen is separated into three different individuals. One of the braincases is designated as a new type specimen. Some materials are described by the first time (sacral ribs, distal caudal, chevrons, metacarpals, astragalus and metatarsals), others reinterpreted as different bones (‘ulna’ and ‘radius’). The diagnosis ofB. reigiis emended, removing some of the original characters (longitudinal groove located on the suture between the parietals that continues posteriorly over the supraoccipital to the foramen magnum) and adding some new (small paired pits on the frontals and posterior ridge of the metacarpal IV). The phylogenetic analysis does not supportB. reigias a member of the Saltasaurinae, but rather as a basal member of a broad clade of sauropods that in turn is recovered as the sister group of the Saltasauridae. Herein, we report new fossil remains with marsileaceous affinity associated with dispersed microspores corresponding to Crybelosporites, different types of massulae of Salvianiaceae ( Paleoazolla patagonica and Azolla circinata), and a single megaspore assigned to the fossil genus Grapnelispora. These fossils were recovered from the Late Cretaceous Loncoche Formation, at the Calmu-Co section, Malargüe Group, Northern Neuquén Basin, Mendoza, Argentina. The macrofossils include scattered leaflets, rhizomes, roots, and a sporocarp-like structure. They share characters with members of the aquatic fern family Marsileaceae; however, based on the characters preserved, they could not be placed within any extant or fossil species; therefore, the fossils are better included within a new fossil-taxon, Mendozaphyllum loncochense. Dispersed spores of Crybelosporites pannuceus, also belonging to Marsileaceae, were recovered from the entire section. Additionally, abundant isolated massulae with affinity to the aquatic fern family Salviniaceae, and a single megaspore assigned to Grapnelispora loncochensis, were identified from the plant bearing layer. The presence of Marsileaceae fossils in the Campanian-Maastrichtian Loncoche Formation, Mendoza, extends towards the north the paleogeographical distribution of the family Marsileaceae in Argentina, since previous records are from Patagonia. A fluvial to deltaic environment with lacustrine episodes is suggested by the sedimentology of the lower and middle parts of the Calmu-Co section and supported by the abundant fresh water algae recovered from the palynological association. This was probably the optimum habitat for the growth of aquatic ferns related to Marsileaceae and Salviniaceae and explains its abundance in the studied sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Naturally sodium bentonites are comparatively rare and the exploration of new geological sites is always of interest considering the high demand of this product. In Argentina, the predominant industrial Na-bentonites deposits are found in Neuquén Basin. Recently, in this sedimentary basin, a new Na-bentonite deposit (named Justina) has been found in the Anacleto Formation of Upper Cretaceous age and mostly deposited in fluvial-alluvial environment. The Justina deposit bentonites are constituted by around a 90% of aluminum dioctahedral smectite, identified as Na-montmorillonite. Main differences between these bentonites and the standards (Wy and CATAE) lie in a higher content of octahedral Mg, a higher BET-N 2 specific surface (65–71 m2/g) and a more compacted microfabric with evidence of recrystallization and/or cementation processes affecting the smectite. Mineralogy and chemical composition so as high CEC values (111–125 cmol/kg) indicates that this benonite is of high grade. Grain size distribution, swell index, consistency limits and rheological properties of bentonites are slightly lower than expected for their composition, probably related to the occurrence of traces of soluble salts. The methylene blue adsorption (65–69 mL/0.5 g) and green compressive strength (13.9–17.4 N/m2) are high and foundry properties of the bentonites meet the requirements to be used as binder for molding sands. • A new Na-bentonite deposit in Upper Cretaceous continental sequences was studied. • The bentonite is mostly composed of an aluminum sodium smectite (montmorillonite). • A higher octahedral Mg and lower Al and Fe is observed compared to standards. • Bentonites have very high CEC and BET specific surface area. • The microfabric and salt content strongly affect the technological properties. Abstract: The tooth MML-Pv 1030 comes from the Upper Cretaceous (middle Campanian–lower Maastrichtian) strata of the Allen Formation at Salitral de Santa Rosa, Río Negro, Argentina and is the biggest titanosaur tooth yet described. The specimen is a cylindrical chisel-like tooth, its length is 75 mm, mesiodistally 15 mm and labiolingually 11 mm. The wear facet is single on the lingual side of the tooth, which has an oval outline with a low angle (10°) with respect to the axial axis of the tooth. This tooth is 32% greater in length than the longest tooth registered in a titanosaurid (Nemegtosaurus), and twice the tooth size of taxa as Tapuiasaurus, Bonitasaura and Pitekunsaurus. Detailed descriptions of the tooth morphology and a highlight of comparative relationships among known titanosaur teeth are provided. Abstract: A gastrolith set, comprising 197 elements, associated with an indeterminate elasmosaurid plesiosaur collected from the Campanian–Maastrichtian La Colonia Formation, Chubut, Argentina, is described. Most of the gastroliths are discoidal (41.9%) or spheroidal (34.8%), with a mean Maximum Projection Sphericity Index value of 0.69 and a mean OP Index value of −0.74. The values of these indices are compared with those recorded for gastroliths associated with other Upper Cretaceous elasmosaurids to see if patterns with palaeobiological relevance are evident. The mean values of the Maximum Projection Sphericity Index and the Oblate-Prolate Index allow us to infer a fluvial or estuarine origin for all the elasmosaurid gastroliths for which these indices have been calculated. This inference is palaeobiologically informative because it indicates that at least some Upper Cretaceous elasmosaurs entered into estuarine (or fluvial) environments. It also helps explain the interesting vertebrate assemblage of the Allen and La Colonia formations where a rich continental fauna is recorded but elasmosaurids and polycotylids are the only well represented vertebrates with marine affinities. Abstract: Thirteen mollusc taxa are described from the Mata Amarilla Formation, a lower Upper Cretaceous unit exposed in southern Patagonia, Argentina. Of these, one is a new bivalve species, Pterotrigonia flava sp. nov. The fauna was collected from two sections representing different parts of the basin. Sedimentary characteristics at each one, together with the fossil content and taphonomic features of the preserved material, confirm that these localities represent littoral environments (lagoon). The two sections contain autochthonous elements, and beds with mixed autochthonous and parautochthonous fauna. The latter exhibits a marine shoreface influence, possibly owing to washover deposits. Abstract: A new genus and species of clupeomorph fish, Leufuichthys minimus, is described from the fluvial deposits of the Portezuelo Formation, Upper Cretaceous (Turonian–Coniacian) of the Neuquén Group, Patagonia, Argentina. It is a small-sized fish with an estimated body length up to 46mm. Among other characters, the new species shows the following: abdominal scutes; abdomen moderately convex; anal fin elongate-based; three uroneurals; two epurals; caudal fin bearing very elongate rays; and cycloid scales. Leufuichthys minimus gen. et sp. nov. shows a greater similarity with Kwangoclupea dartevellei, a clupeomorph described from a marine Cenomanian deposit of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa), mainly due to the presence of an elongate-based anal fin, bearing more than 20 fin-rays, differing from it by the presence of a not hypertrophied abdomen. As far as known, L. minimus gen. et sp. nov. is the first clupeomorph described in the Upper Cretaceous of Patagonia and represents one fortuitous preservation of an articulated fish in fluvial deposits. Abstract: A new enantiornithine bird, Intiornis inexpectatus gen. et sp. nov, is described here. It is based on a partial hind limb found in beds of the Upper Cretaceous Las Curtiembres Formation (Campanian), North-West Argentina. The new taxon is referred to the family Avisauridae on the basis of its cranially convex third metatarsal. Several features suggest close relationships between Intiornis and the avisaurid Soroavisaurus, from the Lecho Formation (Maastrichtian; North-West Argentina). Intiornis was the size of a sparrow, thus representing the smallest Enantiornithes known from South America. The new species shows adaptations for a perching mode of life. Moreover, the hypothesis suggesting that the flying pterosaur reptiles decrease in taxonomic diversity due to competitive interaction with birds is discussed. Abstract: Theropod teeth from the Bajo Barreal Formation (Upper Cretaceous: Cenomanian–Turonian) at the “estancia Ocho Hermanos”, Chubut Province are described. Most of them show features of Abelisauroidea, a clade already represented in the Bajo Barreal Formation by Xenotarsosaurus bonapartei and other isolated remains including a left maxilla. Dromaeosauridae and Carcharodontosauridae represent the first record of these taxa for the Bajo Barreal Formation. Besides this, at least three theropod clades (Abelisauroidea, Carcharodontosauridae, and Dromaeosauridae) coexisted in central Patagonia during the Cenomanian–Turonian along with other theropods as Aniksosaurus darwini and Megaraptor sp. Abstract: The first vertebrate remains from the Upper Cretaceous locality El Anfiteatro (northern Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina) are described. Fossil remains were recovered in beds of Cerro Lisandro, Portezuelo, and Plottier formations. From the Cerro Lisandro Formation, remains of large fishes, dipnoans, titanosaur sauropod dinosaurs, and a variety of theropod dinosaurs (cf. Carcharodontosauridae, cf. Spinosauridae, cf. Abelisauria and Coelurosauria indet.) are reported. The Plottier Formation, in turn, has yielded remains of Chelidae turtles, crocodyliforms, titanosaur sauropods, theropods (cf. Carcharodontosauridae, Coelurosauria indet., cf. Unenlagiinae), and ornithopods. To date, the Portezuelo Formation has been the less prolific of all. Except for the record of a possible spinosaurid in the Cerro Lisandro Formation, the rest of the evidence obtained from El Anfiteatro is congruent with the record of other Patagonian sites where the Limayan and Neuquenian tetrapod associations were established. Abstract: Malarguesaurus florenciae gen. et sp. nov. is a new and robust somphospondylian titanosauriform (Dinosauria, Sauropoda) from the Neuquén basin, Mendoza Province, Argentina. The specimen comes from Upper Cretaceous strata assigned to the Portezuelo Formation (upper Turonian-lower Coniacian). It includes proximal, middle and distal caudal vertebrae, chevrons, dorsal ribs, and appendicular bones. Malarguesaurus is characterized by the following association of characters: (1) proximal caudal neural spines vertically directed, with a concave caudal border, and a caudodorsal corner forming a right angle; (2) procoelous-opisthoplatyan proximal and middle caudal vertebrae associated with procoelous distal caudal centra; and (3) distal caudal neural spines having a concave and depressed dorsal border. A preliminar cladistic analysis placed (Ligabuesaurus +(Malarguesaurus + Phuwiangosaurus)) as a sister taxon of Titanosauria. Unique among the titanosauriforms, Malarguesaurus has procoelous distal caudal centra associated with procoelous-opisthoplatyan proximal caudals. Abstract: We describe a new titanosaurian braincase (MML-194), from the Upper Cretaceous (middle Campanian–lower Maastrichtian) of Río Negro Province, Argentina. Among titanosaurs, this specimen resembles Bonatitan reigi, more than any other member of the clade; the similarity is based on the supraoccipital protuberance bearing a median groove (also present in Saltasaurus and Rapetosaurus), the prominent basal tubera, the exit for the nerve VII located on the prootic crest, the occipital condyle and the foramen magnum almost of the same width. This material allows to observe some internal structures that are not appreciable in other titanosaurs, such as the pituitary cavity, the dorsum sellae and the foramen for the passage of the internal carotids, among other characters. The specimen MML-194 and Bonatitan were exhumed of same geological unit, the Allen Formation, from which have also been collected fossil eggs assignable to sauropods (megalooliths), for what is not unlikely that some of these taxa has been responsible of the laying of those eggs. Abstract: Twenty three different sites in two areas of Río Negro Province (Salitral Ojo de Agua and Salitral de Santa Rosa-Salinas de Trapalcó), preserving eggs and eggshells from the Allen Formation (Upper Cretaceous) were studied, and five egg levels were identified. Three different types of eggshell were recognized. Eggs possessing thick eggshells of Type 1 are abundant in both areas, sometimes associated with eggs having thinner shells. Eggs of eggshell Type 1 are included in the oofamily Faveoloolithidae of the parataxonomic classification. Eggshell Type 2 is subdivided into two groups (Types 2A and 2B), mostly based on the mean thickness of the eggshells and other parameters. Eggs of eggshell Type 2 are assigned to the oofamily Megaloolithidae of the parataxonomic classification, and ascribed to titanosaurs. A third type of eggshell (Type 3) is only recorded at one of the localities (Salitral Ojo de Agua, egg level 2). This type is intimately associated with theropod bones, and its microstructure agrees with an assignation to the Theropoda. It is assigned to the oofamily Elongatoolithidae. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The first dinosaur embryos found inside megaloolithid eggs from Auca Mahuevo, Patagonia, were assigned to sauropod dinosaurs that lived approximately 80 million years ago. Discovered some 25 years ago, these considerably flattened specimens still remain the only unquestionable embryonic remains of a sauropod dinosaur providing an initial glimpse into titanosaurian in ovo ontogeny. Here we describe an almost intact embryonic skull, which indicates the early development of stereoscopic vision, and an unusual monocerotic face for a sauropod. The new fossil also reveals a neurovascular sensory system in the premaxilla and a partly calcified braincase, which potentially refines estimates of its prenatal stage. The embryo was found in an egg with thicker eggshell and a partly different geochemical signature than those from the egg-bearing layers described in Auca Mahuevo. The cranial bones are comparably ossified as in previously described specimens but differ in facial anatomy and size. An integrated study combining sedimentological and ichnological data has been conducted in the lower wave-dominated deposits of the Calafate Formation. The study aimed to assess the variation in fair-weather and storm processes, tidal flux, and the coast configuration to correctly constrain sedimentary dynamics in complex depositional systems. The wave-dominated deposits comprise foreshore to upper shoreface (FA1), middle to lower shoreface (FA2) and offshore-transition deposits (FA3) moderately affected by storms. In FA1, the most proximal strata contain Macaronichnus isp. and occur within the foreshore, while the upper shoreface shows an increased ichnodiversity associated with the occurrence of the archetypal Skolithos ichnofacies evidencing heightened energies of the upper shoreface. FA2 display a fair-weather community assigned to the proximal Cruziana ichnofacies that shows a wider range and variability of living strategies, and a storm-related community represented by opportunistic colonizers which produced burrows assigned to Ophiomorpha nodosa. The monospecific occurrence of Thalassinoides isp. at the top of FA2 in CC02P section is assigned to the Glossifungites ichnofacies, developed on a firmground and autogenic surface. The ichnoassemblage in FA3 is attributable to the transitional Skolithos-Cruziana ichnofacies, that exhibits a slightly reduced diversity of the fair-weather community and a sparse bioturbation. The distribution and the general characteristics of the ichnological assemblages are consistent with deposition in fully marine conditions. The bioturbation intensity, trace-fossil diversity, maximum penetration, and burrow size distributions indicate fully oxygenated and clear waters, normal-marine salinity conditions, abundance and accessibility of food, and continuous and moderate sedimentation. Climate impact on alluvial organization owing to its control on water availability and sediment delivery within the catchment, but temporal changes in stacking patterns are often interpreted to reflect changes in subsidence and base level. To test for evidence of climatic control on the stacking pattern, we study an outcrop succession with two styles of stacking within the Upper Cretaceous Bajo Barreal Formation in the Cerro Ballena anticline, Golfo San Jorge Basin, Argentina. The 385 m thick and 2.5 km wide exposure has layer-cake geometry, lacking either large-scale erosional surfaces, fluvial terraces, or evident paleosols, dismissing either local tectonic activity or base-levels shifts. Rooted in a paleohydrological study recognizing upward increasing in both channel width and flow depth of formative rivers, we use spectral gamma-ray logs, x-ray diffraction in mudstones, and sandstone petrography to understand the controls on the stacking pattern. At the base, Section A consists of small-scale, isolated channels fills in a siliciclastic floodplain with sand:mud ratio of ~1:6, whereas the overlying Section B has a sand-mud ratio of ~1:3, with larger-scale channels and greater inter-connectivity within a volcaniclastic floodplain. Upward reduction in K percentage through Section A parallel with increasing kaolinite content, and mudstone samples from Section B contains a higher proportion of kaolinite than Section A samples, evidencing an upward increase in paleo-weathering in humid conditions. Detrital components of Section A indicate several volcanic sources (e.g., basic-intermediate components derived from the Middle Jurassic Bahía Laura Group and acidic components sourced from the Andes Cordillera), whereas Section B exclusively contains acidic clasts derived from the Andes Cordillera. Simultaneous changes in detrital constituents, suspended load type, and increasing scale of the rivers in Section B occur coeval with increases in channel inter-connectivity, here related to the increase of river discharge and sediment supply in a humid climate, favoring more frequent avulsions or higher channel migration rates in a relatively flat geomorphic scenario. The record of abelisaurids in South America, particularly Argentina is relatively abundant. However, abelisaurid diversity is far from being well-known. Huincul Formation has yielded diverse theropod remains, including the abelisaurids Ilokelesia and Skorpiovenator. The aim of the present contribution is to describe a new abelisaurid coming from the Upper Section of the Huincul Formation (Cretaceous; Cenomanian-Turonian) at the Violante Farm fossil site, Río Negro province, northern Patagonia, Argentina. The new taxon described in this contribution is represented by an incomplete specimen including well-preserved maxilla and dorsal vertebrae, and distorted pelvic girdle and caudal and sacral vertebrae. Its size, much smaller than large abelisaurids as Abelisaurus and Carnotaurus indicates that the new taxon probably occupied a different ecological niche within the carnivoran guild. • We describe a new species of Abelisauride from the Huincul Formation (Cenomanian-Turonian), Patagonia, Argentina. • Tralkasaurus cuyi nov. gen. et sp. constitutes a new form of medium-sized abelisaurid. • The phylogenetic analysis resulted in the nesting of Tralkasaurus as a basal abelisaurid. • The new abelisaurid affords new evidence regarding small to medium-sized abelisaurids from Patagonia. Gregarious behaviour among dinosaurs has been inferred from several lines of evidence (monospecific bonebeds, skeletal morphology, phylogenetic inferences, comparison with modern ecosystems and parallel trackways with particular characteristics), but is relatively poorly documented for non-avian theropods. Here, we report five parallel theropod trackways of large track size (average length of 28 cm) in the Cretaceous (Cenomanian) Candeleros Formation from northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. The tracks are provisionally assigned to aff. Asianopodus pulvinicalx and considering the autopod morphology of the theropod taxa documented in the Candeleros Formation, abelisaurid theropods are suggested as trackmakers. The trackways possess similar stride, speed estimation, direction and preservational features, and track show uniform depth and do not overlap. Physical barriers (i.e., large fluvial channels or perennial lake) that could influence the direction of the theropod trackmaker gaits were not recognized in the section. Taking into account these considerations, a gregarious behaviour for the abelisaurid theropod trackmakers is proposed. The tracks are preserved as shallow undertracks in a medium-grained sandstone bed deposited in a floodplain setting. The tracking surface is interpreted as the overlaying layer of muddy-siltstone. The fossil record of basal paravians in Gondwana is still poorly known, being limited to the Cretaceous unenlagiids from South America and the problematic Rahonavis from Madagascar. Here we report on a new paravian from the Cenomanian-Turonian (Late Cretaceous) of Río Negro province, NW Patagonia, Argentina. The new taxon exhibits a derived bird-like morphology of the forelimbs (e.g., robust ulna with prominent, anteriorly oriented, and proximally saddle-shaped radial cotyle and wide medial flange on metacarpal I) and a plesiomorphic foot with a raptorial pedal digit II. Phylogenetic analysis recovers the new taxon in a monophyletic clade with Rahonavis, being the sister group of the remaining Avialae and more derived than other non-avian dinosaurs. Both exhibit derived forelimb traits in opposition with their plesiomorphic hind limbs. The position of the new taxon and Rahonavis as stem avialans indicates that Gondwanan basal paravians are represented by two different clades, at least. The new taxon probably constitutes a previously unknown grade in the avian-line theropods in which some flight-related adaptations of the forelimbs are present in cursorial taxa. The present discovery sheds light on the acquisition of flight-related traits in non-avian dinosaurs and on the still poorly known paravian radiation in Gondwana.
