Background: Selenium is an essential element, but its metabolism in humans is not well characterized. A few small studies indicate that the trimethylselenonium ion (TMSe) is a common selenium metabolite in humans. Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the human metabolism of selenium to TMSe. Design: Study individuals constituted subsamples of 2 cohorts: 1) pregnant women (n = 228) and their 5-y-old children (n = 205) in rural Bangladesh with poor selenium status [median urinary selenium (U-Se): 6.4 µg/L in mothers, 14 µg/L in children] and 2) women in the Argentinian Andes (n = 83) with adequate selenium status (median U-Se: 24 µg/L). Total U-Se and blood selenium were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS), and urinary concentrations of TMSe were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography/vapor generation/ICPMS. A genomewide association study (GWAS) was performed for 1,629,299 (after filtration) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Bangladeshi women (n = 72) by using Illumina Omni5M, and results were validated by using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: TMSe "producers" were prevalent (approximately one-third) among the Bangladeshi women and their children, in whom TMSe constituted ~ 10-70% of U-Se, whereas "nonproducers" had, on average, 0.59% TMSe. The TMSe-producing women had, on average, 2-µg U-Se/L higher concentrations than did the nonproducers. In contrast, only 3 of the 83 Andean women were TMSe producers (6-15% TMSe in the urine); the average percentage among the nonproducers was 0.35%. Comparison of the percentage of urinary TMSe in mothers and children indicated a strong genetic influence. The GWAS identified 3 SNPs in the indolethylamine N-methyltransferase gene (INMT) that were strongly associated with percentage of TMSe (P < 0.001, false-discovery rate corrected) in both cohorts. Conclusions: There are remarkable population and individual variations in the formation of TMSe, which could largely be explained by SNPs in INMT. The TMSe-producing women had higher U-Se concentrations than did nonproducers, but further elucidation of the metabolic pathways of selenium is essential for the understanding of its role in human health. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in adults in Argentina. Sodium reduction policies targeting processed foods were implemented in 2011 in Argentina, but the impact has not been evaluated. The aims of this study are to use Argentina-specific data on sodium excretion and project the impact of Argentina’s sodium reduction policies under two scenarios - the 2-year intervention currently being undertaken or a more persistent 10 year sodium reduction strategy. Methods: We used Argentina-specific data on sodium excretion by sex and projected the impact of the current strategy on sodium consumption and blood pressure decrease. We assessed the projected impact of sodium reduction policies on CVD using the Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Policy Model, adapted to Argentina, modeling two alternative policy scenarios over the next decade. Results: Our study finds that the initiative to reduce sodium consumption currently in place in Argentina will have substantial impact on CVD over the next 10 years. Under the current proposed policy of 2-year sodium reduction, the mean sodium consumption is projected to decrease by 319–387 mg/day. This decrease is expected to translate into an absolute reduction of systolic blood pressure from 0.93 mmHg to 1.81 mmHg. This would avert about 19,000 all-cause mortality, 13,000 total myocardial infarctions, and 10,000 total strokes over the next decade. A more persistent sodium reduction strategy would yield even greater CVD benefits. Conclusion: The impact of the Argentinean initiative would be effective in substantially reducing mortality and morbidity from CVD. Abstract: A study aimed to further understand the biology of porcine picobirnaviruses (PBV) was conducted between November 2003 and January 2008, on a farm located in the outskirts of Córdoba City, Argentina. PBV prevalence was examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining (PAGE S/S) on a total of 265 samples collected from pigs divided into four groups, according to age and physiological status. PBV detection rate was highest in the group of sows sampled within the lactogenic period (38.02%; p <0.05), followed by pregnant sows (15.09%), piglets aged 2–5 months of age (18.42%) and adult (≥50 weeks) male pigs (0%). In addition, 103 samples collected in 3 follow-up studies were analyzed by PAGE S/S and reverse transcription followed by PCR (RT-PCR). Two of these studies followed female pigs from weaning up to slaughter and a third one from weaning up to 4 pregnancy periods. The results provide evidence that PBV establishes a persistent infection in the host with periods of silence intermingled with periods of low and high viral excretion. High PBV excretion levels were detected by PAGE S/S and were conditioned by age (primary infection) and host physiological status. Low PBV excretion levels were detected by RT-PCR throughout the entire study period. Sequence analysis of selected amplicons indicated that the virus excreted through the follow-up study was the same. These results suggest that porcine PBV is maintained in nature by transmission from infected asymptomatic individuals to susceptible ones. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses the result of the study regarding the interaction between chitosan and oil under stomach and duodenal digestive chemical conditions, in Argentina. Chitosan, in a hychloridic acid medium, emulsified lipids, in which the emulsion was a water-in-oil-in-water type, according to investigators. Based from observations, duodenal absorption and enhanced lipid excretion was inhibited by the interaction between chitosan and oil.

Two hundred and twenty Argentinian primary school children (122 boys, 98 girls, aged 6-13 years) were studied to establish reference values of 24-h urinary calcium excretion (UCa) and calcium/creatinine ratio (Ca/Cr) in 24-h urine collections and in first-morning urine samples. Mean UCa excretion was 2.05±1.40 mg/kg per day and the 95th percentile was 4.74 mg/kg per day. UCa excretion was higher in boys than girls (2.33±1.47 and 1.70±1.24 mg/kg per day respectively, P < 0.001). Statistically significant differences were found between the 6to 9-year and the 10- to 13-year age groups (2.37 ± 1.49 vs. 1.73 ± 1.25 mg/kg per day, P < 0.001). Mean Ca/Cr ratios in 24-h collections and in first-morning urine samples were 0.129±0.086 and 0.105±0.079 for the group overall (P < 0.001). The Ca/Cr ratio in the first-morning urine sample correlated poorly with the 24-h calcium excretion, suggesting that the Ca/Cr ratio in first-morning urine samples cannot replace the 24-h measurement.
