Abstract

This article offers information on the first three seasons of exploration of the Coronado Expedition camp at Chichilticale in Arizona. Anthropologist Carroll L. Riley and archaeologist Karl W. Laumbach guided the exploration program at the camp. The first field season's objective was to confirm the hypothesis that the Kuykendall Ruins were Chichilticale. Pieces of red adobe were found by the team's pedestrian surface reconnaisance of the Kuykendall site. Also noted is the principal drainage feature associated with the site.

Abstract

The article briefly discusses the isotope analysis of lead shot found at various locations in Arizona and New Mexico, determined to be of Spanish origin and therefore indicative of the route likely followed by Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado during his expedition of 1540-1542 (also known as the Coronado Trail). Lead was analyzed from five sites: the Kuykendall Ruins, Doubtful Canyon (both in Arizona), Hawikku, Piedras Marcadas Pueblo (both in New Mexico), and the Jimmy Owens site (in Texas).
